From the Principal

“Slow down”

“You’re going too fast!”

“Too quick!”

From my window young students run, shout and play across the school grounds. They zigzag and jump, immersed in games of their own creation. And as I watch them, I can’t help but think, it did go too quickly. It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming students through the doors, filled with excitement and anticipation for what was to come. Now, here we are, at the close of another school year, with countless memories, accomplishments, and challenges behind us. It’s a bittersweet feeling to watch our students grow, achieve, and prepare for the next chapter, but it also reminds me of the invaluable moments we’ve shared along the way. Time truly has a way of slipping by unnoticed, but the impact we’ve made together will last far beyond these final days of the year. Some will return in the new year, while others will step into the world to begin their next adventures.

So, it is important, before we look ahead to the new beginnings that the start of 2025 will bring, that we slow down and reflect on the milestones that have led us to this moment. Semester 2 was filled with memorable events and milestones that have shaped our journey. We witnessed incredible teamwork and spirit during the Year 12 Aitken College vs. Hume Anglican Grammar Sports Competition, where both schools showcased their athletic talents

and sportsmanship. Our Primary School students dazzled audiences with their performance of The Little Mermaid Jnr, a vibrant production that highlighted their creativity and dedication. And, of course, we celebrated the 10-year reunion of the Class of 2014, where former students returned to reconnect, reminisce, and reflect on the growth and achievements since their graduation. These events remind us of the importance of community, creativity, and the bonds we form along the way.

Semester 2 also highlighted continued physical growth at Hume Anglican Grammar. The expansion of our facilities continues to reflect the school’s commitment to providing the best for our students. Notably, the construction of the new STEM Centre at the Donnybrook campus and the Library and Specialist Facilities at the Kalkallo campus are now complete. These facilities will offer students access to resources and learning spaces designed to foster innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills. As we move forward, the centres will play a crucial role in enriching the learning experience of our young people.

With this continued growth we also identified opportunity for further resourcing and now, in 2025, we will welcome 45 new staff members across our three campuses. Together, we will create a nurturing environment for our students where we will support and prepare them for the world that awaits.

And finally, our previously named Mt Ridley campus bids farewell to its old name in Semester 2 and will now embark on a new chapter in 2025, going forward as Freier Campus. This new name honours The Most Reverend Dr. Phillip Freier, the Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, on his impending retirement, and marks an exciting new beginning for the campus.

We look back fondly at the events in Semester 2 as we move forward to begin a new school year with excitement and determination. This is the time where our students will set new goals, explore different subjects, and discover passions. Staff will support them to venture outside of their comfort zones, embrace growth, and face change, even when it feels uncertain or intimidating. We encourage them to make the most of these opportunities, knowing that each challenge they overcome will help them become more resilient, confident, and more open to the world that they will enter when they leave us.

As we close the chapter on 2024, let’s celebrate the fresh starts and exciting opportunities that lie ahead for our students. With every new beginning, they have the power to shape their own paths and create something truly amazing.

In Other News

On 5 October, the Kalkallo Italian Choir graced the stage at the Melbourne Italian Festa 2024. Our students, along with choirs from 12 other Victorian schools, proudly participated in the inaugural edition of the Zecchino d’Oro singing contest in Melbourne, organised by the Italian Assistance Association, CO.AS.IT.

It was heartwarming to see our choir students so enthusiastic about participating in such a prestigious event at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.
