FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How much does it cost to study abroad?

Students studying through the formal McMaster Exchange Program still pay domestic tuition and fees to McMaster.

However, in addition to these fees, you must also budget for living, travel, and medical insurance expenses. These costs can vary depending on location. Students studying through an independent option must consider they are paying international tuition fees as well as other expenses.

Is financial assistance available?

All students participating in the formal exchange program are eligible for a special award to help with costs. OSAP loans may also be available to qualifying students.

McMaster also offers a limited number of bursaries and scholarships for students studying abroad both formally and independently. For more information, visit: Aid and Awards Gilmour Hall 108 student.services@mcmaster.ca How does the transfer credit work?

Normally, the maximum amount of transfer credit a student can obtain while studying abroad for a full year is 30 units, the equivalent to a full year of study at McMaster.

Your final, official transcript must be received in order for transfer credit to be assessed. Keep in mind the following regulations surrounding transfer credit: • Students are allowed a maximum of 60 units of transfer credits towards their degree • A maximum of 6 units of transfer credit may be used towards completion of a minor How are grades from study abroad used?

The grades obtained in courses taken through other schools are not included in your McMaster averages, nor do they appear on your McMaster transcript. Courses will appear as either ‘T’ for transfer or ‘N.C.’ for no credit.

OTHER STUDY ABROAD OPTIONS

Would you like to experience living and studying in a different country, meet people from all over the world, and increase your global awareness, all while earning credit towards your McMaster degree?

If so, studying abroad may be for you! Students can spend a part of their program at a host university approved by the Faculty of Humanities. There are a number of ways to participate, so students can find the right opportunity for them.

MCMASTER EXCHANGE PROGRAM The McMaster Exchange Program is facilitated by International Student Services (ISS), and is the most popular option for studying abroad. Students can spend part or all of their third year taking courses at one of our partner institutions for either a term or full year. Though you will be attending school in a different country, you still pay McMaster tuition and fees.

Eligibility To be considered for nomination, students must meet the following conditions: • Entering Level III of an Honours program • A minimum cumulative GPA of 7.0 • Language proficiency (if applicable) • Must return to McMaster to complete final units of study to graduate How to Apply Students should start the process at the beginning of their second year by attending one of the ISS information sessions.

Applications are normally due in January, and interviews take place in February. Nominations are by selection, as the number of spaces available at each school is limited. KILLAM Scholarship Program Students can apply to study at a number of universities in the United States of America through the KILLAM program.

Applications are normally due in December. More information can be found through the program’s website at www. killamfellowships.com or by contacting Aid and Awards at student.services@mcmaster.ca Participating institutions may include: American University, Arizona State University, Bridgewater State College, Clemson University, ITHACA, Plattsburgh State University of New York, Smith College, University of Maine, University of Southern California, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University, Wellesley College Studying Abroad Independently Students can also apply independently to accredited university courses and programs around the world through a Letter of Permission. Courses must be approved by the academic advisor to ensure they will transfer successfully for degree credit.

In these cases, tuition and fees are paid directly to the host school, as it is a fully independent process. Students interested in pursuing this option should first meet with the study abroad advisor to discuss eligibility.

The Explore Program The Explore Program gives students the chance to study French in an immersion environment at different locations across Canada. A government bursary means almost all costs are covered, including tuition and living expenses. Students must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to be eligible, and a limited amount of transfer credit could be given towards electives.
