FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How much does it cost to study abroad? Students studying through the formal McMaster Exchange Program still pay domestic tuition and fees to McMaster. However, in addition to these fees, you must also budget for living, travel, and medical insurance expenses. These costs can vary depending on location. Students studying through an independent option must consider they are paying international tuition fees as well as other expenses. Is financial assistance available? All students participating in the formal exchange program are eligible for a special award to help with costs. OSAP loans may also be available to qualifying students. McMaster also offers a limited number of bursaries and scholarships for students studying abroad both formally and independently. Normally, the maximum amount of transfer credit a student can obtain while studying abroad for a full year is 30 units, the equivalent to a full year of study at McMaster. Your final, official transcript must be received in order for transfer credit to be assessed. Keep in mind the following regulations surrounding transfer credit: • Students are allowed a maximum of 60 units of transfer credits towards their degree • A maximum of 6 units of transfer credit may be used towards completion of a minor How are grades from study abroad used? The grades obtained in courses taken through other schools are not included in your McMaster averages, nor do they appear on your McMaster transcript. Courses will appear as either ‘T’ for transfer or ‘N.C.’ for no credit.
