Cognitive Science of Language Cognitive Science, an area of psychology, examines the mind and its functions, including emotion, memory, creativity, and language. Linguistics is the study of language in all of its forms, including natural language development, organization, and use. At McMaster they come together to form a unique undergraduate program: Cognitive Science of Language. This program looks at how language is represented and processed, from both a functional and a neurobiological perspective, investigating speech production, speech perception, and reading and writing across all age groups, from infants to older adults, in both first and second languages. We also examine cases of normal and impaired language, the latter including developmental disorders and those acquired through strokes or other brain injuries. Our graduates are well prepared for clinical work and further study in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.

Meet Two of Our Faculty
Dr. Victor Kuperman specializes in psycholinguistics and quantitative linguistics, eye-movement behavior in reading, individual differences in word and sentence procesing, and statistical and experimental methods in language research. Dr. Elisabet Service investigates how working and long-term memory interact in language processing and learning. Using both experimental behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methods, she has studied phonological memory, second language acquisition, reading difficulties, and unilingual and bilingual sentence comprehension
