No Time to Spare! Your Support Saves Lives When Animals are in Desperate Situations

When the phone rings, the Humane Society of Missouri responds with urgency. The Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) team knows it is often a matter of life or death for defenseless animals. They also know that because of your generosity, funds are available to rescue these animals and to give them the care they need. They know, because of your kind support, these animals will now have chances at forever, loving homes.

Within one week, the ACT team received two such calls for help. The Sheriff’s Office in Clinton County notified HSMO that five chickens, nine dogs, 10 cats, a sugar glider, and a hamster were in desperate need. The chickens were skinny, lethargic, and near death. There was no food and little water. Dead chickens were also discovered in the cages.

The dogs, including great danes, pitbull mixes, and a cattle dog terrier, were housed in crates so small there

wasn’t even enough room for them to stand up. Because of your support, these animals received professional and compassionate care and are enjoying second chances.

Six days later, on a Friday, the ACT team traveled to the opposite end of the state at the request of the Carter County Sherriff’s Office. There was no sign of the owner, but there were seven chihuahua mix puppies in immediate danger of dying if left on the property for the weekend. The ACT immediately rescued the puppies and later returned to the home, where the owner surrendered 10 adult dogs.

Your support means we can jump into action and give second chances to animals when there is an urgent need!

Mission: Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances. We provide a safe and caring haven to all animals in need—large and small—that have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. Our mission is to end the cycle of abuse and pet overpopulation through our rescue and investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs, and educational classes. We are committed to creating lasting relationships between people and animals through our adoption programs and our shelter pet training program. We further support that bond by making available world-class veterinary care.

The Humane Society of Missouri is an independent, non-profit organization not affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations. We do not receive tax support or United Way funding. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and fees for services.

Dear Friends,

This year, 2022, has been a rocky one. But thanks to caring and generous donors, we have been able to meet the challenges head-on. We all breathed a sigh of relief when COVID restrictions were lifted and we could gather in person again. But the pandemic left its share of obstacles. We saw shortages and sharply rising prices on medicines, fuel, and supplies. At the same time, we were seeing our animal population growing. You were there for us.

You enable us to travel throughout the state to honor our commitment to leave no animal in a life-threatening situation.

In a year of extreme weather, our Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) team showed up despite blistering heat, extraordinary rainfall and extremely cold temperatures. They were often met by heartbreaking scenes of neglect and abuse. Because you were there for us, animals were rescued from substandard puppy mills, neglected farms and hoarder situations. And our dedicated team knows these animals will have a second chance at a better life. You enable us to travel throughout the state to honor our commitment to leave no animal in a life-threatening situation.

There is no better illustration of the benevolence of our donors year after year than the completion of our multi-phased expansion at our Macklind Headquarters. Your support of this long-term vision is a further commitment to animals in need. (See related article)

And finally, I must share my overwhelming gratitude to our donors who were there for us through the devasting flooding at the Best Buddy Center. No one anticipated the historic flooding in our region, but you were there for us to ensure our animals and staff were safe.

I thank you deeply,

Longmeadow Takes the Reins for Ruby Moon

Your Love and Support Make Her Rehabilitation Possible

It will take time and patience for her to fully recover from neglect, but because of your support, her feisty personality is starting to shine through!

When some animals arrive at our doorstep, they are ready to go straight to their forever homes. But some, like Ruby Moon, will require a lot of compassionate care and a lengthy stay to be rehabilitated. Your continued support means we are able to care for animals no matter how long it takes.

When Ruby Moon arrived at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, the signs of physical neglect were clear. She was surrendered by her owner just in time … otherwise, she may not have survived. The 12-year-old bay mare was bone-thin, 300 pounds underweight, and weak. Her journey from Jasper County was a four-hour trek. She was understandably

fearful as she was patiently coaxed out of the horse trailer into new surroundings. A long-unaddressed dental issue had been making it difficult for her to chew and eat, leaving her hungry and malnourished.

At Longmeadow, she has gotten pelleted feed that provides good nutrition and is easy to digest. She has been able to get proper veterinary care, including a dental float, which eliminated the sharp edges on her teeth that have made it difficult for her to eat. Ruby Moon continues to gain weight and strength as she receives routine medical care.

Your ongoing support means Ruby Moon has the time she needs to recover from the trauma of her rescue. It will take time and patience for her to fully recover from neglect, but because of your support, her feisty personality is starting to shine through! She will soon have the chance to become a pasture pet and companion and live the life she deserves.

Second Chances

Each year Longmeadow Rescue Ranch finds new homes for nearly 250 animals … including pigs! Mercy Watson arrived at Longmeadow as a stray. From the beginning, he was friendly and talkative. He loved being the center of attention! Whether it was a quick pat on the back, a nice treat, or a “Hello, Watson” from a staff member … he would always oink in return.

While living at Longmeadow, our staff taught him tricks, including sitting and spinning. And he loved back scratches and belly rubs! After being a staff favorite for almost a year, Mercy Watson got adopted! His new mom says he still loves his back scratches and belly rubs.

Thank you for being there for all the animals at Longmeadow, including Mercy Watson!

We are over the Moon for Luna

Luna was brought to HSMO as an owner surrender. Our animal care team immediately realized that Luna was suffering from terrible environmental and food allergies. We started medicated baths, ear medications, and specialized food to help treat her allergies. It took a long time for HSMO to find the best regimen for Luna. Because of her lengthy stay, Luna was placed in a foster home. Your love and support means we are able to find second chances for our shelter animals, no matter how long it takes. And because of her specific needs, it took more than six months to find Luna’s perfect home.

Thanks to you, Luna has a new leash on life! Her adopter, Sofia, already has a dog with food allergies and was able to provide the perfect home for Luna! These days, Luna spends her time doing zoomies in the yard and even spent her summer swimming in Lake Michigan!

Thank YOU for being there for animals like Luna … no matter how long it takes!

Made Possible by YOU!

Peanut Butter Found His Jam

Our Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued Peanut Butter just in time. He was tied to a tree on a property in Pettis County and was in bad shape. His ribs were visible beneath stretched skin. He had ticks, intestinal parasites, a heart murmur, and had trouble breathing.

Because of you, we were able to get Peanut Butter the care he needed at our shelter. He was placed on a special diet to help him gain weight. And our veterinary team provided the treatments for his infections. And despite all the trauma, Peanut Butter’s friendly and trusting personality began to shine through.

It took several weeks for Peanut Butter to gain weight and recover from the severe neglect he endured. But soon after Peanut Butter was made available for adoption, he got his second chance and his forever home!

Thank you for being there for Peanut Butter every step of the way!

Calvin is the Cat’s Meow

Calvin was surrendered to the Humane Society of Missouri along with two siblings and his mom. He was only a few weeks old when he arrived at our shelter, and he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection. To give them all a chance to recover and grow, they were placed in a loving foster family.

In his new foster home, Calvin flourished! His foster family fell in love with his sweet personality … and they ended up becoming his forever family! They report that he is the purrfect addition to their home.

Your love and support made this possible.

Thor’s New Leash on Life

When Thor arrived at HSMO as a stray, he was in bad shape. It was clear he had been living on his own for a while. He was underweight and suffering from severe skin and ear infections. Our veterinary team immediately began treating his infections and providing the proper diet to help Thor gain weight.

Due to the severity of Thor’s skin infections, his recovery was lengthy. To make sure he got lots of socialization while he was in the shelter, Thor was placed in our office foster program. This allows our shelter pets with long recoveries to spend time getting love and attention (and treats!) with our office staff.

When he was fully recovered, Thor was made available for adoption. And soon enough, he went to his forever home!

Thank you for giving Thor a second chance at a happy and healthy life!

Shelter Construction

Humane Society of Missouri: Under Construction

It takes a village. That village, our donors like you, has been there for us throughout a planned expansion at our Macklind Headquarters and an unexpected reconstruction at our Best Buddy Center. Both projects mean that our shelter animals will be well cared for as they await their second chances.

With the final phases of a long-planned Rescue Center complete, HSMO can provide better care for more animals than ever. Because of you, we can further our commitment to animals in need. There is additional space to quarantine sick animals, more rooms to shelter small dogs and cats, and eight large rooms to accommodate bigger breeds. The new spaces are designed using materials that allow easy cleaning, which keeps the shelter sanitary and our animals as healthy as possible. The expansion also includes a new food prep area and laundry room. With the state-of-the-art expansion complete, the Macklind facility now has room for more than 700 animals.

In the early morning of July 26, rainwater started cascading into the lower level of the Best Buddy Center, which includes 106 animal cages, storage room, animal exam rooms, and foster, and volunteer spaces. The water quickly rose to a height of 24 inches! By 7:30 a.m., three staff members had moved all animals to safety. The ACT team was mobilized to wade through the water to save whatever they could — computers, training equipment, supplies, and small appliances and carry them up to the main level.

The damage was extensive. Walls, flooring, electronics, elevators, carpeting, cabinetry, veterinary equipment, cages, and appliances will be repaired or replaced. All told, there is an estimated $1.5 million dollars in damages. Because of your support, it will be possible to return to full capacity in a matter of six to eight months so together, we can care for the helpless animals that count on us every day.

From food to litter, we’re proud to support the pets of the Humane Society of Missouri.
