Last summer, HSMO rescued 28 dogs from horrific conditions in a North St. Louis County home. The house had no electricity, and the temperature inside the house had soared above 95 degrees. Most of the dogs were found locked in small crates, had no access to food or water, and were covered in urine and feces. Some of them were so weak they could barely lift their heads. They were rushed to our headquarters and were able to receive immediate care, thanks to your generous support.
Unfortunately, the investigation and legal process took several months. During this time, we worked tirelessly to care for the dogs even though we didn’t have legal custody of them yet. Because of this, they were unable to be spayed/ neutered or be made available for adoption. But with the
dedication of our donors, our team was able to continue to give these pups the love and attention they deserved. Our behavior team and shelter staff spent countless hours with them, socializing them and doing everything in their power to make the pups’ extended stay as comfortable as possible.
Finally, in early October, we were granted legal custody of all of the dogs we rescued. They received their spay/neuter surgeries and were made available for adoption as soon as they had a clean bill of health.
We are thrilled to report that these pups, thanks to you, got the second chance they deserved.

Mission: Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances. We provide a safe and caring haven to all animals in need—large and small—that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Our mission is to end the cycle of abuse and pet overpopulation through our rescue and investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs, and educational classes. We are committed to creating lasting relationships between people and animals through our adoption programs and our shelter pet training program. We further support that bond by making world-class veterinary care available.
The Humane Society of Missouri is an independent, non-profit organization not affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations. We do not receive tax support or United Way funding. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations and fees for services.

Dear Friends,
The arrival of Spring brings both gratitude and hope. We cannot thank you and all our generous donors enough for your continued support. In 2024, your compassion allowed the Humane Society of Missouri to respond to approximately 20,000 reports of abuse, neglect, and abandonment throughout the state. Within the first few weeks of last year, our Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued 97 Labrador Retrievers from the facility of an unlicensed breeder in Phelps County. Additionally, we rescued 55 dogs from a property in Stone County and 15 horses within St. Louis County.

Your generosity assures that every animal receives the care it deserves and the time it needs to heal.
These rescues are the first steps on the long road to recovery and rehoming. Your generosity assures that every animal receives the care it deserves and the time it needs to heal. Our state-of-the-art veterinary facilities and dedicated medical team provide lifesaving treatment. Our shelter and adoption staff offer ongoing care and compassion throughout their recovery. And our animal behaviorists work tirelessly to rebuild trust in animals who have only known cruelty and neglect.
The hope lies in the thousands of happy endings, made possible by your unwavering support. Your commitment ensures that we remain an open-admission shelter, never turning an animal away.
As winter yields to Spring and our days grow warmer and longer, we can look forward to celebrating our barn buddies in April during Longmeadow Rescue Ranch’s Spring Fling in Union, Missouri. In May, we will gather in Tower Grove Park for the 30th Annual Bark in the Park. As we celebrate our four-legged furry companions, please remember to keep their vaccinations and preventative medicines up to date.
With gratitude and hope, we welcome Spring. Thank you for all you do for the HSMO. Your support is deeply appreciated.

Gratefully,
Kathy Warnick President Humane Society of Missouri

with a badly injured leg was found and taken to our shelter by a good Samaritan. She weighed less than 3 pounds and needed immediate medical attention. HSMO’s veterinary team determined her left hind leg was so damaged it would need to be amputated for her to lead a normal, pain-free life, and they immediately performed the operation. The tiny tuxedo kitten made it through surgery and was soon on the road to recovery. Our staff named her Butters.
Because of your support, Butters’ life was saved, and she was made available for adoption. Soon, she caught the eye of a couple who came in, and when they met the sweet little “tripod” kitty who’d been through so much, they knew she had to go home with them. We are so grateful to our donors who made Butters’ happily ever after possible!
The work of HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force never ends. This dedicated group was particularly busy last fall with a case involving 15 horses at a substandard private barn in Hazelwood. After months of failed negotiations with the property owner to inspect the living conditions and the health of the animals, the ACT carried out an emergency rescue of nine severely underweight and neglected horses under a warrant. The horses were in pain, suffering from overgrown, infected hooves and dental issues. After years of neglect, they all needed immediate medical attention.

A few weeks later, the ACT team returned with another warrant to rescue the last six horses, as the barns on the property where the horses were confined were condemned by the City of Hazelwood due to rotting beams and shoddy electrical work. Several of the stalls had standing water and were infested with bugs.
Now, all the horses have been examined by a large animal veterinarian and transported to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. Thanks to your generosity, these horses now know what it feels like to breathe fresh air, have clean stalls and receive the medical attention they deserve.

It’s not often that our pups are able to take the national stage, but your support made it possible once again!
Three HSMO puppies were given the opportunity to play in Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, which aired in February on Super Bowl Sunday.
Astro the beagle mix was surrendered to HSMO at only two weeks old because his owners were moving and couldn’t take him. Charlotte the cocker spaniel puppy came to HSMO from the National Mill Dog Rescue and quickly caught the eye of everyone on the Animal Planet team. Mardipaw, her siblings and mother were left in the overnight kennels at HSMO’s Maryland Heights location in July. They were hard to resist with their fluffy coats and sweet temperaments!
Thanks to generous donors like you, these three puppies made the big journey to New York and were able to strut their stuff for the whole country to see, bringing attention to shelter pups who need a second chance everywhere!

Our Animal Cruelty Task Force visited Polk County last November on two different rescues. In the first case, 27 pups were brought to safety after having been chained up outdoors, only able to drink rainwater if they could reach it and dig through trash for food. The dogs were underweight, and some were injured. Sadly, the team also found several dogs on the property who hadn’t survived.

Less than two weeks later, our ACT was back in Polk County on a different property to rescue 15 dogs. They were also malnourished and experiencing health issues that required emergency care. Once again, the remains of several dogs were found, a testament to the unspeakable suffering they’d endured.
Without donors like you, the tireless work of our ACT team would not be possible. Thank you for providing second chances for the rescued pups that, without your support and love for animals, would likely not have survived the winter months.
In September, Longmeadow Rescue Ranch quietly took in two adult female alpacas from another rescue who could no longer care for them. Our team was in for a big surprise, however, when one of the alpacas gave birth only a few hours after arriving at the ranch! The mother alpaca was in poor health and initially unable to feed her newborn, so the Longmeadow team jumped in to save his life.
Because of your generosity, we were able to give the mother alpaca the help and nutrition she needed to be able to properly care for her newborn, which she was able to do a few days after his birth. Alpacacino, his mother, and his auntie, are now thriving!

From food to litter, we're proud to support the pets of the Humane Society of Missouri.
