Construction Workshop + Continuous Developed CoHousing Location: Bushwick Newyork

2022 Fall

Third Year Design Studio

Cooperation With Linqing (Laurie) Lao

Insutructor: Marcos Parga

This project aims to revitalize Bushwick, a historic neighborhood in Brooklyn, by introducing affordable co-housing and a unique construction education center. Targeting the low-educated demographic, the initiative seeks to improve living standards and transform Bushwick into a more habitable area. It provides opportunities for living and learning, featuring a fabric lab where residents can acquire and apply construction skills, thus contributing to community development and earning income.

The project encompasses diverse spatial experiences, including individual living units, shared “gray spaces,” and both interior and exterior public areas. The gray space enables residents to collaboratively design their living environments. Integrated with these gray spaces, both inside and outside, residents and the community are encouraged to spend time and modify spaces, enhancing their engagement and connection to the area.

SITE ANALYSIS

Bushwick is a neighborhood in Brooklyn with a rich history and diverse cultural backgrounds. It was once described as a neighborhood that had deteriorated into a slum. This project aims to restore the quality of life and help develop Bushwick into a more livable space, returning it to its former glory.

Cinema Retrofit Into Sicilian Dialect Archive + Artist Residency

Location: Marsala, Sicily Island, Italy

Language serves as the bridge that connects individuals and is perpetuated within a civilization. Prior to the widespread use of written text, information was primarily conveyed through oral language. In this project, the cinema program is preserved and transformed into a multi-purposedperformance space. By offering an artist residency, the project invites global scholars to participate on-site, facilitating the exchange of acoustic knowledge and archaeoacoustic skills with the local community. Through audio production, we aim to preserve, celebrate, and inherit the rich oral history of Sicily—where the very definition of language or dialect remains uncertain, ready to be denied and then confirmed again from one moment to another.

The project also redefines the facade of the fascist-era cinema, integrating it with the local community through welcoming landscapes and sound spaces designed around the site and the Roman Ruins.

The Hane House is designed to be a self-sufficient and secure retreat perched on Khuiten Peak. Rising to an altitude of 4,000 meters and adorned with all year round snow, it lies at the trijunction of China, Mongolia, and Russia. The structure harmonizes with the mountain slope, blending seamlessly into the landscape, rendering it nearly invisible. It incorporates an integrated environmental system that combines solar and snow water collection with traditional Mongolian food storage techniques and thermal chambers, ensuring self-sustenance in the extreme conditions. Positioned in a unique geographical setting, the Hane House offers a collaborative sanctuary for four individuals. It provides a safe space for those of diverse and multicultural backgrounds who are either looking to surmount personal challenges or seeking solace amidst nature’s tranquility, encouraging exchange in varies cultures.

04 Rivere

The Rivere project presents a visionary approach to the environmental challenges faced along the banks of Banana River and Cocoa Beach Causeway in Florida, areas now threatened by rising sea levels and runoff pollution.

The Rivere also creatively adapt to the threat of flooding by replacing a major bridge set for deconstruction with a network of water management machine modules. Together, these modules act as a robust seawall, providing protection to the surrounding community.

This string of natural, porous structures is designed to embed essential minerals below water lever to be gradually washed away and dissolved by natural currents, thus improving downstream conditions. The voids left by these minerals create a porous and rugged surface, enhancing the embedded water purification systems and forming diverse habitats for marine animals. Furthermore, sequences of interior spaces invite occupants to immerse themselves underwater, narrowing the gap between protected interiors and the open water body, emphasizing the urgent threat of rising sea levels.

05 Ice Crystality

Sustainable Developing Ice System With Animal Archive

Location: Novaya Zemlya, Russia/Arctic Region

2022 Spring

Second Year Design Studio

Cooperation With Johnny (Ching-Hsing) Chan

Insutructor: Julie Larsen

As global warming becomes increasingly severe, the rising sea levels due to the reduction of sea ice serve as a critical warning, posing a particular threat to the Arctic region. Located within the Arctic Circle, this project aims to preserve and produce ice to maintain the environmental balance and animal habitats of the region.

This initiative functions not only as an animal archive and research center but also as a water management facility. It actively reproduces ice and accumulates it into icebergs, helping to preserve the temperature and environment of the Arctic Ocean. Moreover, it acts as both a symbol and a tool that highlights the ongoing environmental distress facing the Earth.

As the project progresses, more machines will be developed, eventually forming a vast network that not only extends land from islands but also enlarges animal habitats and contributes to stabilizing the temperature in the Arctic region.

SITE ANALYSIS

Animal species in the Arctic zone are in danger, with the polar bear being one of the most recognized. According to research, seals are among the most active species in the Arctic and play a crucial role in its food chain. Floating ice serves as their home and is essential for breeding. As ice coverage rapidly decreases, the food chain is significantly impacted.

The ice layer and energy generator gradually increase and eventually develop into an iceberg.

ICE PRODUCTION PROCESS

According to the principles of physics, energy generated from ocean currents can be harnessed for ice production, which then floats to a larger body. Over time, this accumulates to form a large iceberg.
