Memories of Hughes Hall

Hughes Hall celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2010. During 2009, the year that the University celebrates 800 years, we are calling on members and friends of Hughes to send us their memories – both written and visual. You can use the form enclosed with the newsletter or simply use this as a starting point. Please send your reminiscences and any photos to Rachel Boston: Hughes Hall, Cambridge cb2 1ew, or rb439@hughes.cam.ac.uk Here is a selection of some we received after the Alumni Weekend, from members who were here between 1958 and 1960, when Hughes was a teacher training institution.

What is your favourite memory of Hughes Hall? The privilege of spending a year at Cambridge University. The confidence at the end of it that we would have a good teaching post, because of the reputation of Hughes Hall. The very nice girls who were my counterparts – we had a nice gang and lots of laughs in each other’s rooms – lots of parties and sunny days. Arriving for interview on a cold December day; feeling warmly welcomed with open fires and friendly faces, my own intense excitement at the possibility of being lucky enough to be offered a place. …And the memorable talk from Miss Wileman before we left, telling us she had selected us from the large number of applicants because we had a touch of dottiness about us! This rather deflated our cockiness at having been chosen, but I soon realised that, in those days, it was a pretty good way of selecting teachers.

What do you remember about dining at Hughes, or the food in College?

Do you have any favourite memories of your teaching practice placements? The day 2b ran riot: the window cleaner outside stepped in through the window and said “Leave it to me Miss, I’ll sort them out for you” – and he did. The infinitely patient and tolerant Physics master wisely suggested I swap with him and start afresh with 2a!

What do you remember about Cambridge itself? A magical year! I did not go to the kind of school that told its pupils about Cambridge. Had I known such places existed I would have tried to gain a place as an undergraduate. I ran a girls’ comprehensive for over 20 years and I certainly pointed my girls in your direction.

… and in 2008

This is part of a longer reminiscence we received from Elizabeth Bryan who, unusually at the time (1958), got married just before starting her course at Hughes. By accepting me at Hughes Hall and by permitting me to continue there, Miss Wileman substantially helped towards the equality of women. Married women could be capable students and could make a contribution to society if allowed to do so. I have much to thank her for. As must many others.

With thanks to Philippa Russell and Brigit Carolin.

Mushrooms on lettuce on Friday evening. And the fierce housekeeper, Miss Marshall, who told us off for making burn marks on the lawn with our picnic kettles. …the friendly meal I had with my old tutors on my return from the USA.
