One of ASD’s main 2020 goals is for 90% of students to attend at least 90% of the school days. Below is Huffman’s monthly attendance rate so far for the 2016-17 school year. This is the % of students who have attended at least 90% of the time during the month. When calculating this percentage, excused or unexcused absences are not considered. The attendance % is based on whether a student was in school or not. August: 86.44% September: 92.63% October: 81.51% 1st Quarter Conferences It was great seeing so many families at conferences. We appreciate your partnership and feel so very fortunate to work with such a caring and involved community. Thank you! ALICE

ASD is adopting a new safety and security protocol. Please use the following link to learn more about ALICE: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. As ASD provides training and information to staff, I will be sure to share any updates with our community. Rest assured, our staff will be thoughtful in this implementation. The last thing we will do is create an environment of fear. School is a safe place and we want students to be healthy, happy, focused on learning, and being great kids! Please know we are thinking about this very carefully. Staff will be trained in November and an informational parent meeting will follow shortly thereafter. Please look for communication coming your way shortly. Winter Gear We are gearing up for our Alaskan winter. Let’s hope for lots of snow. Please be sure to send your student to school with all 5 points of gear. Students go out for recess as long as the temps are above -10 degrees F. It appears the temps are settling below freezing now, so we will begin enforcing this more strictly going forward. Hat Gloves Winter Coat Snow Pants Boots Movie Night: 6:30pm on Friday, November 18. Movie TBD. Hope to see you there. As always, don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions or concerns. Have a wonderful day. All the best. Chris 907-742-5650 opitz_chris@asdk12.org

As always, lots of creative fun is happening in the Music Room! Please ask your student musician about a new rhythm or singing game they've learned!! Please be aware of the following concerts: *November 10th – Choir at Goldenview Middle School – South Area Choir Festival (singers arrive at 6:15pm, concert starts at 7pm) *November 15th – Young People's Concert – PAC (4th, 5th and 6th grade field trip) *November 17th – Choir at Trinity Presbyterian Church (singers arrive at 6pm, concert at 6:30pm) With a song, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt PE News for November Students had so much fun the last part of October working on Cooperative Learning games. We enjoyed watching everyone working together and encouraging each other with kind words and big smiles! If you have time, be sure to check out our PE bulletin board in the hall showcasing some of the students in action. As we move into November we will transition into Basketball and ball handling skills. We will also learn a new dance called the “Hamster Dance”. Kindergarten parents We always practice locomotor skills (running, galloping, hopping, skipping, jumping, etc.) during PE. It is fun to practice these at home as well, but some of the more complex ones (such as skipping) are developmental so don’t worry if your child is not able to do these yet. PE Pointer of the Month (Check out the attached calendar from SHAPE America for more ideas) Here are a few ways to live a healthier lifestyle: Choose water as your beverage with meals Choose to eat more fruits and vegetables each day Choose to turn off screens so you can spend more time being active
Healthy Futures News Please see the attached Healthy Futures Log for November. We are working on the logs in school, in the classrooms (thank you teachers), in the health room (thank you Mrs. Phillips), and the gym in grades 1-6. Kindergarten always works on theirs at home. We also encourage you to download the attached log to work on as a family for extra motivation.

November is a time to be thankful and I am thankful for the wonderful Huffman community I am involved in. Second quarter is off to a great start here in the Huffman Library. The book fair was a huge success, thanks to the wonderful Huffman PTA and parents like you who stopped by the library to support the book fair. I enjoyed visiting with so many of you. I hope you know that I adore reaching out to your child and hopefully igniting a love of reading and libraries. Huffman students love to read and I am so lucky to be their librarian. The annual bookmark contest sponsored by Anchorage librarians is underway. All classes were introduced to this year's theme, Connect @your library. More details coming home next week. I'd like to highlight a couple of online resources available to you and your student you may not know about: ASD Media Overdrive: E books and audiobooks are available for ASD students to download onto their reading device (Kindle,Ipad, computer, phone). I sent home student library cards with their library number and password. As always if you don’t know this please email me and I can send it to you
The next two weeks in Health we will be learning about the various body systems. K “The Five Senses”: Students will practice using all of their senses in class and make a “5 senses” headband. 1st “Learning about the Body from Head to Toe”: Students will trace the body’s systems with various colored markers and make a healthy choices headband. 2nd “How You Think, learning about the brain”: Students will learn about the different parts of the brain and the specific functions. 3rd “The Better to See You, learning about the eye”: Students will watch their pupils as their irises dilate and constrict. They will make an eye model while learning about the parts of the eye 4th “Let’s Talk Teeth”: Students will learn the various parts of a tooth, the different types of teeth, and how to properly brush and floss their teeth. Students will make a model with the names of the different types of teeth. 5th “Brainstorms”: Your Central Nervous System. We will focus on how the brain learns. Ask your child to describe the technique we practiced in class to help them memorize the items on the cart. 6th “Cells”: Student groups will create posters and present information about human cells. They will also make incredible edible cells using candy to represent the different organelles inside the cell. Our next unit will be on nutrition. If you have the time at meals to discuss the different food groups and the importance of proper nutrition for life long health. Sincerely, Jennifer Phillips (phillips_jennifer@asdk12.org)
World Book Encyclopedia:The Anchorage School District purchases a subscription for all students so we should be using it! World Book Encyclopedia online is more that just an encyclopedia though. It has a great place for early readers to practice reading and wonderful facts, videos, activities, maps, games, science projects, a dictionary, and more for those curious minds. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Mr Mitchell, our very own 6th grade teacher, is chaperoning Block 1. This is an incredible opportunity for your student to learn how to ski/snowboard without driving to Girdwood. The bus meets at Carrs Huffman in the morning and you pick-up the kids in the evening at Carrs Huffman. There are only 20 spots available.
