Dear Huffman Families, Can you believe it? May is here and we are in the home stretch. What an amazing year of learning and growth. This brings us to our last newsletter of the year. Huffman Elementary Construction

May 10 Mini Society 5th Grade 1:30p

May 11 Potato Planting Day Nurse’s Day

May 13 Explorations Day 9:15A-11:15A / 1:15P-3:15P

We are lucky to be receiving interior and roofing upgrades this summer. Upgrades will include new flooring, new ceilings, permanent walls between classrooms, and an office upgrade to name a few. This is year two of three in the overall bonded project. With that said, we will be hustling to clean and pack early this year. Please contact your classroom teacher to see if they’d like any extra help packing up. It will be hectic, but so worth it in the end. Please know that construction may impact access to the playground over the summer. At this time, we are not sure what access will look like. Thank you for understanding. Online Registration is Open, May 2 – May 27 https://parentconnect.asdk12.org Skip the lines and stress. Register online right now. Registering early is incredibly helpful for teacher staffing and school planning. Thank you! Last Day of School, Thursday, May 19 As always, students may not bring backpacks to school on the last day. Students will bring their report cards home on the last day as well.

New-to-district students or students moving over the summer will need to register in-person at their school during districtwide registration in August.

Safety As you can imagine, students are becoming more and more excited about summer vacation. Please use extra caution while driving and watch for those darting kids and bikes. In particular, please slow down and watch the intersection near the school sign. More and more students are riding their bikes. Parking Lot Thank you for keeping our students safe. A couple of friendly reminders: The front parking lot (bus lane) is closed during drop off and pick up times Students may not walk through any parking lot unattended Cell phone use is prohibited in the parking lot Thank You I am so proud to work with such an amazing group of students, staff, and families! I feel very lucky to be Huffman’s principal and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the students. This is truly a wonderful community and I appreciate our partnership. I hope you are able to find time to enjoy our beautiful Alaskan summer with your kids. Have a great summer! As always, don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions or concerns. Have a wonderful day. All the best. Chris 907-742-5650 opitz_chris@asdk12.org

Good Job Awards 4-15-16 Salutations! It is hard to believe that I am writing my final blurb for the 2015-2016 school year. Thank you Huffman families for making my first year as a librarian a great one. This is truly a special community and I am proud to be a Huffman Husky. Do you need some reading activities for the summer? Attached to this newsletter is the Anchorage Public Library’s summer reading schedule. The theme this summer is Ready, Set, Read! Also the 2016-2017 Battle of the Books list is out. This is another excellent summer reading activity to get a head start on reading the new Battle of the Books. Go to www.akla.org/akasl/bb/bbhome.html to get the current list. Looking for a new good series to read aloud/or listen to on family trips or around the campfire? You should try the best selling series Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. I am hoping that I have received all books back to the library. They were due today, May 6th. I have placed notices in teachers’ boxes of those kids who still have library books or fines. Please help your child take care of this, by next Friday May 13th at the latest. Thank you for your help with this. I hope your summer brings you sunshine, great bursts of color in your yard, late night midnight sun walks, quiet moments on a dock, a beautiful sunset, family time, and of course many page turning books. Remember you can find magic wherever you look in a book and reading gives you a place to go when you have to stay where you are. Carpe Diem fellow Huffman Huskies! Huffman's Kids in the Kitchen Family Cooking Project was a great success! This project was provided by the Anchorage School District, Alaska Kidney Foundation and The United Way to inspire families to get excited about the benefits of cooking together. A big thank you to our celebrity chefs - Kelly and Heidi Nichols, owners and head chef of Suite 100. They were wonderful to put the time and effort in to make these classes fun, informative and inspiring! We want to also thank the Huffman Carr's store for donating the food bags which were used for each class. Families who eat together tend to become more invested in each other! We hope that this class encourages more Huffman families to prepare together, eat together, and get healthy together!

Lost and Found We have arrived at the end of another fun filled year at Huffman. Everyone has been asking what the outcome of the auction was and I’m pleased to announce that we earned $7,293!! We were so happy to see so many in attendance, especially staff members. Thank you all so much for making our first annual spring auction event so successful. We couldn’t have done it without the help of many!! We are already making plans for next year :-) We have so enjoyed participating in the PTA, serving the staff and students of Huffman. It has been a learning year for several of us and we look forward to coming back next year with a whole new set of ideas and exciting events! Again, thank you to everyone who was so supportive of us this year lending their time and talents when we needed them. It is so rewarding when we can all work together to accomplish so much. Have a very safe and hopefully sunny summer and we’ll see you all next year! For those of you who dread the infamous school supply shopping, look for us at registration…PTA will be selling pre-made school supply bags to grab-ngo!!! We’ll also have brand new spirit wear items at the Huffman Husky Hutch, stay tuned!!! Happy Summer, Huffman Team PTA

Lost and Found bins are over flowing. Tables will be set up on Monday so you can look for lost items. All items will be donated to local charities on May 19th.

Missing Glasses? The office has 4 pairs of glasses

Thanks to everyone who came out on clean -up day! Huge thank you to Mrs. Kay and student council for organizing this event.

Notes from the

room

It’s amazing to think how close we are to the end of the school year. The students have learned so much!

Bravo to our 6th graders who participated in Sonic Boom! – Alaska’s largest concert! And great job to our Band, Orchestra and Choir musicians on a terrific concert!

It is with love and appreciation that we wish Ms. Devine, our long-time band teacher, a happy retirement! Ms. Devine has inspired many years of band students and we will miss her greatly!

If you are interested in musical opportunities for your child(ren), please take a look at the flyers outside of the Main Office or email me and I can send the information electronically.

On a personal note, thank you for a wonderful first year at Huffman! I am truly thankful to be a part of the Huffman community! See you in the Fall.

With a song, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt
