Going forward, all information regarding school closures and/or delayed starts will be communicated from the district level. The most efficient way to receive this type of information is via ASD’s text message alert system. http://www.asdk12.org/ textupdates/ As ASD shares information, we will post it on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ HuffmanElementary/?fref=n AMP – Alaska Measures of Progress Update You may have seen the State of Alaska’s initial release of AMP data this past week. Although the data is preliminary and summarized at a school and district level, we will begin analyzing the results over the next couple of weeks and thinking about how we can continue to improve student achievement. The Department of Education and the state of Alaska are scheduled to send individual student results to ASD’s Assessment and Evaluation department. Once received, the district will review the data and coordinate the delivery of results to families. The student reports will be sent from the district, not individual schools, and will be delivered sometime in late December or January depending on when the state delivers the data. These dates are subject to change. Please use the following link to keep up to date with any new release of information from the state. https:// education.alaska.gov/tls/Assessments/Results/results2015.html As always, if you ever have concerns or questions regarding your student’s individual achievement, I encourage you to talk with your student’s teacher. Teachers collect and use many sources of data in determining students’ needs, strengths, and the course of classroom instruction. We are committed to the achievement of every individual and will work tirelessly on behalf of your student. New School Website Huffman will be launching a new school website. Please be on the lookout for information coming your way in the next few weeks. It will be a great place to access the school calendar, resources for students, and vital parent communication. Giving Thanks As we come to Thanksgiving break, I am reminded of the many things I am thankful for. I am thankful for our dedicated and professional staff, the kind and energetic students who bring life to our school, and our supportive and engaged families and community. From my family to yours, I wish you all the very best during this time of giving. As always, don’t hesitate to call or email if you have questions or concerns. Have a wonderful weekend. All the best. Notes from the

Room

Big thanks to our 4th, 5th & 6th grade teachers and students and parent chaperones for a terrific field trip to the Young People's Concert this past week! It was exciting to see our students connecting with classical music in such a fun and participatory way! The Anchorage Symphony staff commented to me on the terrific manners of our students. Way to go, Huskies! Thank you also to Ms. Feucht for helping students create a visual art piece to go along with the musical piece “Firebird!” Students in 2nd and 3rd grade have been practicing their Italian lately as we've talked about musical terms for dynamics and tempos. Kindergarteners are starting the basics of musical composition. Their patterns to “Roly Poly” were great! They have done a terrific job learning a few community-style dances as well. “Down in the Valley” and “I Let Her Go-Go” are favorites. Coming soon: “Holiday Zoobilee” ~ a musical featuring Mrs. Carlson's, Mrs. Weaver's and Mrs. Sooter's students. They are already practicing their songs and lines and choreography for this show. Save the Date: Huffman Choir will be performing at Trinity Presbyterian on Thursday, November 19th at 6pm. This will be a concert to thank the folks at Trinity for all they do for our school community as our tremendous School Business Partner. Please make plans to join us; a potluck dinner will follow the concert. If you have any questions about this concert, please let me know. With a song, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt

Body Systems from the Health Room We spent the past two weeks in Health learning about the various body systems. Kindergarten: The Five Senses. Students practiced using all of their senses in class and made a “5 senses” headband. 1st: Learning about the Body from Head to Toe. Students traced the body’s systems with various colored markers and they also made a healthy choices headband. 1st/2nd: Body systems: Digestive, Nervous, Circulatory, and Respiratory. They also created a life size model of the body’s main organs; check them out they are hanging next to their pod. 2nd: How You Think, learning about the brain. Students learned about the different parts of the brain and their functions. 3rd: The Better to See You: learning about the eye. Students were able to watch their pupils as their irises dilated and constricted, they also made an eye model slider to learn about the parts of the eye 4th: Let’s Talk Teeth. Students learned the various parts of a tooth, the different types of teeth, and how to properly brush and floss their teeth. Students also made a model with the names of the different types of teeth. 5th: Brainstorms: Your Central Nervous System. Focused on how the brain learns. Ask your child to describe the technique we practiced in class to help them memorize the items on the cart. 5/6th The first week was spent on memory techniques and parts of the brain. The second week a volunteer from The American Red Cross gave a disaster preparedness presentation. Students brought home a pillowcase with a list of items to fill it with to be ready for a disaster or emergency. 6th: Cells. Student groups created posters and presented information about human cells. They also made incredible edible cells using candy to represent the different organelles inside the cell. I will be back at Huffman November 30th and we will be focusing on Nutrition. interest and enthusiasm to learn.
