THE BRUSH BACK STREAMER Huds Fly Water

Materials: Hook – Gamakatsu 50410 #1 Thread – Fine Mono Body – Senyo’s Lazer Dub Wing – Arctic Fox Tail Eyes – 3D Holographic Eyes Color – Sharpie Markers

STEP 1

Place the hook in your vise and wrap a base of thread down the shank to the hook point.

STEP 2

Attached A clump of arctic fox tail to the top of the hook, take a couple of wraps around the clump to make it stand up from the shank. A note about the fox: Clip a healthy chunk of fibers from the hide of the fox tail. Grasp the clump by the guard hairs and liberally strip the under fur from the clump. When done properly, approx Âź of the original clump will be all that is left to use.

STEP 3

Repeat step two adding another clump of white fox to the top of the hook shank.

STEP 4

Pull some Senyo’s Laser Dub fibers from the package, using both hands align the fibers by stripping them and laying them back on top of each other. Lay the clump on the bottom of the hook shank and secure it with a few wraps in the middle of the clump. Pull the forward facing half back, and secure with a few more wraps. Once the dubbing has been secured to the shank, use a brush, (I use an old tooth brush with the fibers cut down), to “brush” the dubbing back and up under the fox. Remove the excess dubbing.

STEP 5

Attached a clump of alternate color fox hair to the top of the shank.

STEP 6

Attach another clump of dubbing to the bottom of the shank just like in Step 4.

STEP 7

Attach the last clump of fox to the top of the hook facing forward as shown. (Here I have used the same color of fox, however, a darker color could be used here to create a 3 tone combination of colors). Next attach another clump of dubbing to the bottom of the shank. (here I have added a small amount of pink dubbing to the clump of white dubbing to create just a hint of pink at the throat of the fly.

STEP 8

Pull both forward facing clumps back and build a thread dam at the head of the fly until all of the material faces rearward, try not to wrap over the material, instead use the thread dam to “push the material backward. Once the material lays correctly, whip finish the thread, and clip it off.

STEP 9

Bush all the fibers back and remove any loose dubbing from the body.

STEP 10

Attached the 3D eyes with your bodkin using a spot of Zap-A-Gap to secure them in place. Be sure the eyes are centered on either side as it is viewed from the front of the pattern.

STEP 11

Use colors markers to place bars or spots on the pattern. Note that the fox hair will soak up the ink unusually well, so very gently just touch the tip of the marker to the hair, otherwise it will bleed a much larger spot, or bar mark than you might have planned.

This fly is a great pattern to use for small minnows. The overall length of the fly is not much over 1 ½” but it has a great silhouette and the Senyo’s laser dub adds a wonderful layer of translucency to the pattern. This is my favorite color combo for small mouth bass in the lower Willamette and Columbia river systems. Try it with a medium blue and dark blue over wing with black bars for a traditional color minnow, or solid white with black spots, or whatever color best matches your local baitfish!
