CONCEPTO: IMPLICACIONES TERMODINÁMICAS EN LA ARQUITECTURA PARAMÉTRICA TOPIC: THERMODYNAMIC IMPLICATION ON PARAMETRIC ARCHITECTURE Más allá de las estrategias habituales empleadas en arquitectura, la termodinámica define patrones de comportamiento que no solo hablan de radiación solar y aislamiento térmico, es un contexto más complejo donde aparecen parámetros de energía. El interés radica en hacer una aproximación al comportamiento térmico de los espacios a traves de un sistema que propone dos vertientes: la generación de condiciones térmicas específicas y la reconstrucción espacial a partir de condiciones dadas previamente.

El proyecto se centra en la propagación de temperatura por fenómenos de radiación, conducción y convección, buscando la forma de establecer, de manera paramétrica, criterios para el desarrollo de un proyecto de arquitectura.

Beyond commonly strategies used in architecture, thermodynamics define behaviour patterns which are related with more concepts than solar radiation or thermal isolation, it is a more complex context where energy parameters appear. It is in my interest to make an approximation about thermal behaviour of spaces through a system that proposes two ways: generation of concrete thermal conditions and spatial reconstruction from previous conditions.

The project is focused on temperature spread by radiation, conduction, and convection phenomenons, and also the project is looking for a way to stablish, on a parametric process, some criteria for architectural project development.

PATRON: AGREGACION LIMITADA POR DIFUSION PATTERN: DIFFUSION-LIMITED AGGREGATION (DLA) Uno de los primeros requisitos para el desarrollo del proyecto era encontrar un patrón de comportamiento basado en la agregación. Y la referencia tomada como ejemplo es la de las arborescencias eléctricas, también conocidas como “Figuras de Lichtenberg”. Se denominan así debido a su inventor Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (científico alemán, 1.742-1.799), cuyo descubrimiento fue precursor de las fotocopiadoras, la serigrafía y el inicio de la actual Física del plasma.

Estas figuras retratan la dispersión de energía desde el punto de impacto de una carga eléctrica elevada sobre un material aislante dieléctrico. Además, dentro de esta tipología de sistemas de agregación limitada por difusión, la capacidad de propagación fractal, presenta una dimensión de Hausdorff-Besicovitch de 2,50 aproximadamente (en una escala de 0 a 3), lo que implica una tendencia de crecimiento de las más altas.

One of the first requirements for the project development was to find a behaviour pattern based on aggregation. The example reference considered is the electrical treeing, as known as “Lichtenberg Figures”. This name is because of its inventor Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (german scientist, 1742-1799), which discovery was the precursor of photocopier, screen printing and the beginning of Plasma Physics.

That figures portray the energy spread from the impact point of the high electrical charge above a dielectric insulator material. Furthermore, on this kind of diffusion-limited aggregation system, the fractal spread capacity has a Hausdorff-Besicovitch value of 2.50 approximatelly (on a 0 to 3 scale), so the growth tendency supposes one of the highest ones.

El algoritmo de colonización espacial simula el crecimiento de las plantas. Podemos expresar el proceso que sigue en seis pasos:

Esta herramienta se ha realizado con el plugin Grasshopper de Rhinoceros. Todos los componentes son paramétricos: desde los termómetros que miden la temperatura en cada punto de análisis, los colores, la temperatura del foco de radiación, la forma del foco, la temperatura ambiente, la conductividad térmica del medio analizado, etc.

Permite configurar el sistema generador de condiciones.

1. Poblar cualquier dominio 2D-3D con hormonas de crecimiento.

2. Para cada hormona, busca el brote más cercano.

3. Haz crecer cada brote hacia sus hormonas vecinas. Si no hay ninguna, destruye el brote.

4. Si una hormona está demasiado cerca de un brote, elimínala.

5. Con cada rama creciente, busca los brotes con mayor probabilidad.

6. Repetir hasta que todas las hormonas se hayan consumido o todos los brotes se hayas destruido.

Space colonization algorithm simulates the growth of plants. We can express its process in six steps: 1. Populate any 2D-3D domain with growth hormons.

2. For each hormone find the nearest bud.

3. Grow each bud towards its neighbor hormons. If there is none, kill the bud.

4. If a hormon is too close to a bud, remove it.

5. With every growth branch the buds with some probability.

6. Repeat until all hormons are consumed or all buds are dead.

This tool has been made with Grasshopper plugin of Rhinoceros. All components are parametrics: from thermometers which measure the temperature on every analysis point, colours, the temperature of the radiation focus ans its shape, the surrounding temperature, the thermal conductivity of the analysed medium, etc. This analyzer let to configure the conditioning generator system.

La evaluación del alzado de la malla permite averiguar la capacidad de conexión y la fluidez en las intersecciones.

The study about morphology classifies the best capillary weave to thermal fluxes conductivity (not convection). The evaluation of the mesh elevation let us to know the connectivity capacity and fluidity intersections.

Para ello es imprescindible incorporar un fluido refrigerante, que a las presiones y temperaturas a las que se verá sometido, pueda cambiar de estado.

Las etapas podemos definirlas de la siguiente manera: 1. Compresión (gas +presión = +temperatura) 2. Condensador (gas a líquido = desprende calor) 3. Sistema de expansión (líquido -presión = -temperatura) 4. Evaporador (líquido a gas = absorbe calor)

Carnot cycle is a process which the most simple version consits of four phases, and this process lets us to have two different contexts: one that liberates heat and the other one that absorbs heat (this produces a refrigeration). To do that, a coolant fluid is essential to change its state (and this fluid has to support temperatures and pressure on this process).

We could define the phases on this way: 1. Compression (gas +pressure = +temperature) 2. Condensator (gas to liquid = heat dislodge) 3. Expansion system (liquid -pressure = -temperature) 4. Evaporator (liquid to gas = heat absorption)

RADIACIÓN ELECTROLUMINISCENTE/INDUCCIÓN ELECTROLUMINESCENT RADIATION/INDUCTION El proyecto presenta aquí un punto fuerte y es la consideración de aclimatar espacios mediante impulsos y descargas de radiación electroluminiscente. En lugar de encender un radiador, un sistema de sensores puede propagar descargas controladas para ir acondicionando la zona prevista.

The project shows its strength and this is the consideration to acclimatize spaces by impulses and electroluminescent discharges. Instead of switch on a radiator, a sensor system could spread controlated discharges to acclimatize a specific area.

SISTEMA GENERADOR DE ESPACIOS SPACE GENERATOR SYSTEM

Ensayo de acumulación de calor de convección Convection heat accumulation test ACUMULACIÓN DE CALOR (CONVECCIÓN) HEAT ACCUMULATION (CONVECTION) Basado en el estudio de la sección de los hornos de convección, se ha empleado una herramienta de simulación que permite observar la propagación de calor en el medio en función de la sección.

La transformaciones de la sección modifican también el comportamiento de los flujos termodinámicos. La diferencia estriba en la celeridad con la que un espacio puede calefactarse por convección frente a otros donde puede haber vórtices residuales no homogéneos con la temperatura del resto del espacio.

This study based on the cross section of convection ovens uses a simulation tool to see the heating spread in that space depending on cross section.

Transformations of sections also modifiy thermodynamic fluxes behaviour. The difference is on the celerity which any space could heating by convection in opposition to other methods that supposes the existence of non-homogeneus waste vortex of temperature.

El proyecto resuelve los espacios mediante la integración de esta estructura con el sistema performativo de radiación e iluminación (Lichtenberg’s intrusion) configurando una serie de espacios experimentales de celeridad electrotérmica, es decir, una arquitectura paramétrica que se adapta a demandas estructuradas por su carácter termodinámico de forma instantánea.

Therefore chimney effect or heat dissipation by surface exchange, the trabecular system consists of a porous structure that improves a continuous flux of convection flows.

This project solves space problems by the integration of this kind of structure with the radiation and illumination performative system (Lichtenberg’s intrusion), the project configures a serie of experimental spaces of electro-thermal celerity, that is to say, a parametric architecture that adapts to demand which are structured by their thermodynamic character immediately.
