Artist Statement

Memory drifts—blurred and broken. Through fluid, fragmented brushstrokes, I piece together fleeting impressions of cities glimpsed in passing."
This exhibition unfolds as an echo of "Ephemeral and Renewal." — an exploration of what fades and what remains. In the quiet aftermath of the pandemic, I journeyed through cities like London, Amsterdam, and Tokyo, where urban landscapes became both canvas and conduit.
Each work blends the intimacy of personal memory with the immediacy of on-site sketches. Within the frames, you’ll find still moments—lingering gazes upon old architecture, and passing emotions captured from everyday life. The light and shadow, sounds and fragments of memory gathered along the way—at times vivid, at times dissolving—float in and out of clarity.
With shifting, broken lines and rich, resonant color, I seek to hold onto these ephemeral instants: to paint the rhythm of light and shadow, the pulse of space and feeling. Each brushstroke is a tender attempt to trace the subtle textures of light, to rebuild my emotional landscapes of these cities from within.
This is a visual exploration journey between reality and memory, a tribute to the Impressionist masters, and a reinterpretation of the spirit of the city.

Artwork

"It was a quiet walk, yet full of emotion."
Standing at the street corner, I watched the flow of traffic and the lights stretching across the damp asphalt—glimmering on the wet surface like a musical score. In this piece, I intentionally used a contrast of warm and cool tones: cool hues represent the fast-paced, alienating, and transient nature of the city; warm tones evoke the fleeting smiles and moments of hope that occasionally reflect in the rain.
I've always been fascinated by reflections—a recurring theme throughout my work. After the rain, the streets become flowing mirrors, not only reflecting light and shapes but also revealing the subconscious of the city itself. Through abstraction, I explored the texture of ground reflections, deliberately blurring the boundary of reality to invite viewers into an open space of imagination.
The interplay between the solid and reflected spaces—above and below the surface—composes a visual rhythm: one that is both structured and freely flowing, like a city’s silent melody.

In this work, I use a high-angle, close-up perspective to compress the city into an abstract arrangement of geometry and color.
The foreground architecture is simplified in form but reveals subtle texture and tonal shifts upon closer look. Key rooftops are intentionally stripped of detail to reduce visual noise, creating balance and drawing focus to the tension between structure, light, and shadow.
In contrast, the rooftop chapel features expressive, varied brushstrokes—echoing how memories shift and reshape. These strokes introduce a new layer of visual rhythm.
A bright sky blue dominates the palette. Using cool tones to depict summer adds a subtle dissonance, pulling the scene away from realism and into an emotional space. Here, blue becomes both sky and thought.
This city is not a replica, but a feeling—structured yet fluid, distant yet personal.

This painting of a London dusk begins with a vast, richly layered sky as its visual anchor.
The skyline transitions from a glowing golden orange, touched with hints of soft rose, into broken bands of lavender and indigo, eventually dissolving into a deep midnight blue at the top. I sought to capture the fleeting moment when orange light pierces through the clouds, outlining their edges with a subtle glow—like embers along velvet seams—infusing the sky with a quiet, mysterious drama.
The most striking feature is the long, orange reflection across the river—a gentle path of light that draws the sky downward into the water. This moment of connection between sky and river serves as a visual guide, echoing the last glimmer of twilight. It cuts softly through the muted grey cityscape, creating a strong sense of visual unity and warmth.
Through this sweeping composition of sky, city, and river, I aimed to create a powerful contrast of space and mood—as if the entire city were quietly immersed in this golden-orange dusk, silent yet full of feeling

This work captures a quiet afternoon in the Dutch countryside of Zaanstad—a rare escape from the fast pace of urban life. The open fields stretch endlessly, filled with stillness and calm. At the center of the scene are grazing cows, relaxed and unhurried.
I chose to present the painting across two joined panels, allowing me to portray overlapping moments in time and space. The arrangement softens the sense of linear time, inviting viewers to observe and imagine freely. Wide areas of negative space enhance the feeling of openness and peace.
Cows are social animals, moving in groups with a quiet sense of rhythm and distance.
Beyond the landscape, this piece reflects on the quiet harmony of freedom and stability found in nature

This piece depicts a street corner near my studio in San Francisco—one of my favorite spots and a place I often sketch during walks. I was drawn to the city’s iconic slopes and the warm glow of dusk, which I wanted to preserve. Shadows are simplified to bring focus to the houses lit by the setting sun. Through layered oil brushstrokes—thick and thin—I aimed to capture the rhythm of light moving across the building surfaces.
This moment of golden light holds a quiet stillness, a sense of time passing. Through light and shadow, I reflect on my everyday surroundings and express a deeper emotional connection to the city I’ve called home for over 20 years—a personal record of place and memory.

This London piece is built around a cool-toned palette—deep blues and inky blacks shaping the city as it fades into evening.
A trace of sunset lingers on the horizon, softly lighting the edges of the clouds. The city’s silhouette emerges and disappears through a thin mist, evoking a dreamlike, almost mysterious mood. There's a quiet melancholy, as if the city is whispering forgotten memories.
Warm lights begin to flicker across streets and bridges—tiny golden sparks scattered like stars. Their reflections stretch across the river, writing silent poetry in the night, holding onto belief in the dark. These glowing points flow across the canvas like musical notes, layered with rhythm and movement, forming a nocturne that gently speaks.
I hope viewers don’t just see this work—but pause to listen to it: a quiet composition about the city, time, and the inner self.

Unknown Destination, Oil on Panel, 24”x18”, 2025
Set in a quiet Taiwanese alley at night, this work captures familiar city elements—tangled wires, humming air conditioners, and scooters resting by the wall. At the center is a stray cat, wandering without a clear destination, simply drawn by light. Through its perspective, the scene becomes a quiet reflection on how we move through the city, searching for direction or meaning.
I used open space, angular lines, and soft shadows to build a triangular composition with the cat, creating a subtle sense of imbalance—as if inviting the viewer to follow. Though it may suggest being lost, the painting also speaks of belonging, and the quiet beginning of a new journey

This is one of the few figurative works in the exhibition, drawn from my love of observing people—especially those in often-overlooked everyday professions.
I’ve always enjoyed Japanese yakitori, and during a visit to a small yakitori bar in New York, I was struck by the view from my seat into the kitchen. Framed naturally by a window, smoke, and shifting light, it felt like a quiet stage scene—or a fleeting cinematic moment from real life.
The chef’s focused expression and skillful movements conveyed a quiet respect for the food he was preparing. The swirling smoke not only suggested warmth but also wrapped the space in a soft, atmospheric stillness—capturing both the anticipation of diners and a quiet tribute to craftsmanship.

Bar at The Shard, Oil on Panel, 12”x24”, 2023-2025
This piece captures a scene from a famous bar inside London’s iconic landmark, “The Shard.”
At the center is a distinctive oval-shaped bar, open on all sides—appearing borderless, inviting the viewer’s gaze to flow freely. Through abstract brushwork, I aimed to depict a fleeting sense of intoxication—a light, drifting state between reason and emotion. Boundaries blur, and both space and sensation seem to shift.
Is it the calm of a gentle buzz, or the subtle noise of city life pressing in?
This series was created after a visit to Amsterdam, deeply inspired by the color and brushwork of Dutch Impressionist master Vincent Van Gogh.
Blending his influence with my own perspective, I developed a set of urban impressions of the Netherlands through a modern lens.
In these three works, I echoed Van Gogh’s intuitive and expressive use of color—especially his signature palette of Tiffany blue and warm yellow-oranges—to capture the unique light and atmosphere of Amsterdam at dusk. The skies are grounded in Tiffany blue, while the glowing streetlights and car headlights, like scattered musical notes, dance lightly across the canvas. The contrast between the soft architectural silhouettes and the interplay of blue-green skies and golden lights adds both depth and energy to each scene.
Though each painting depicts a different location, the skyborne city wires stretch across all three, linking them into a single visual composition—a dynamic evening palette.
This is not only an homage, but a reinterpretation. Through this series, I explore how classic colors and scenes can be reimagined with contemporary emotion, inviting viewers to find something new within the familiar.
