February 2023 - Volume 3

Welcome from Mr Letch

Welcome to the latest edition of The Hux Lowdown, our regular look back at some of the events that have happened in our Academy This edition covers some of the exciting opportunities that students have been able to experience since September, from residential trips to Cornwall and musical tours, to visiting speakers and student involvement in community events. I am always very proud of how our students embrace these opportunities and enjoy extending their learning beyond the classroom

I hope you enjoy reading about some of the events that support our personal development curriculum, including mental health awareness, voting on Parliament Day, Crime Awareness Day, and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme I would particularly like to draw your attention to and congratulate the winners of last year ’ s County Challenge who have now seen their idea for water bottles that reduce plastic waste, share a social message and encourage hydration, actually come to fruition. Their bottles have been distributed to primary school students and they will be visiting schools to deliver assemblies soon

The staff at Huxlow are so ambitious and committed to our students that they don’t mind putting themselves in some uncomfortable situations to support them and the Charity week certainly did this, particularly the ‘I’m a Huxlow celebrity’ competition I can’t wait to see what is in store for both staff and students later this term during Red Nose week!

As ever the PE department have been busy and successful this year and you can read about the wide range of activities and competitions that our students enjoy every day. Please encourage your children to get involved in something as we head into the spring and the variety of sports increases even further.

You will also read a brief round up of all that has happened in the Sixth Form Students are proving to be very ambitious and I am proud that they chose to continue to be part of #TeamHuxlow.

At the end of the magazine you will find some important contact details to support your child’s wellbeing and some key dates for your diaries. It is so important that we continue to work together as partners in the work we do to support your child’s learning and personal development There is a saying that ‘it takes a village to raise a child' and your support at home reiterating the expectations and messages that we share every day, are key in their eventual success.

NMPAT - Youth Tour

One of our students, Connie joined Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust as part of the Youth Choir Tour to Spain

The group were based in Valladolid, North West of Madrid. They travelled around the region for five concerts in local cathedrals The age of the students ranged from 13 - 18 and Connie was the youngest in the group

The group enjoyed the time spent shopping, eating local food and partying in the hotel rooms One of the highlights was the flash mob on the flight home (check out the NMPAT Facebook page!)

NMPAT offer a range of enrichment programmes for individual and schools. Their programmes help to develop social skills as well as musical ones The group thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Cornwall

A group of 50 Year 11 students and 6 staff spent their October half term exploring the spectacular coastline of Cornwall.

The trip was packed full of activities including visiting the beautiful harbours of Newquay, the amazing animals at the zoo and an invigorating dip in the sea!!! The students were exceptionally well behaved and enjoyed their time together exploring and building relationships. They all ate well and sang their little hearts out on the coach

The trip was a huge success and will be taking place again this October.

Remembrance Sunday -

On November 11th, students who are part of the Uniformed Services, the Scouting Movement and Girls/Boys Brigade were invited to wear their uniforms for Remembrance Day.

Before the 2 minutes silence, Lucas (Year 11) took on the role of Parade Commander and marched Jakub(Year 11) and Thomas(Year 11) onto the front roundabout where they both played the Last Post alongside Mr Meadowsmith. The whole school respectfully took part in the two minutes silence thereafter.

On Sunday 13th November, Mihai and Max (both Year 11 prefects) joined Mrs Gauvrit in Finedon to lay a wreath on the school’s behalf at the Memorial Service in the town.

In Irthlingborough, Senior Prefects and Year 11 Prefects had the honour of taking part in the parade, laying a wreath and in reading out The Roll Call; the names of all those who gave their lives in both World Wars. These students were Tegan, Ralph and Idris (Year 12) and Miracle and Oakley (Year 11). They were joined by Mrs Correa and Mr Northway We were very proud of all of our students and the respect that they have shown for this extremely important event

Parliament Day

Parliament Week is a fantastic opportunity to see democracy in action and promote British Values This year as part of our PSHE curriculum, students were able to participate in a whole school vote for a new Health and Wellbeing initiative Staff and students had the choice between:

Positive and inspiring quotes around the school

An opportunity to try a new sport/activity during a PSHE session

A weekly ‘Mindfulness Club’ where students can come along and spend some quiet time colouring, listening to music and making posters to display on the Wellbeing Board

Gratitude Pot – staff and students can nominate someone who has ‘made their week’ – everyone nominated is in with a chance to win a termly prize

After the votes had been counted the winner was...

'An opportunity to try a new sport/activity during a PSHE session'

Year 11 and 10 have already had their sessions and Year 7, 8 and 9 will have the opportunity after half term! It has been fantastic to see and hear the buzz on a Thursday morning with our students being able to build relationships with each other through sport and activity!

A big thank you to the PE Team who have been fantastic in supporting Miss Samples in preparing the activities for our students.

Crime Awareness Day

On Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th November, Year 8 and Year 9 students participated in a Crime Awareness Day.

This day gave students the opportunity to experience a unique and interactive educational experience through a series of workshops with the focus being on discussions around staying safe, making positive choices, and having opportunities to ask important questions regarding crime and deviant behaviour

Through our personal development provision, it is important that students at Huxlow Academy have these opportunities to prepare themselves for life outside of the Academy and to help them to understand the importance in making the right decisions

Student Voice from both year groups has returned a positive response (4.18/5 (Year 8) and 43/5 (Year 9)) allowing students to express how much they appreciated the day as part of their educational experience

Wellingborough Fire Service Visit

Wellingborough Fire Service visited Huxlow Academy in November to spend time with Year 9 students

They spoke to the students about the many career opportunities available in the Fire Service. They went into detail about the role of a Fire Fighter, talking about the benefits and the demands of the role.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the session and asked some insightful questions about the service.

The students were then shown around the fire engine and put through their paces during a tough exercise transporting equipment in relays

Students were left exhausted but thoroughly content

A huge thank you to the Fire Service for spending their time with our students

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

We are really excited to have launched the Duke of Edinburgh’s award at Huxlow Academy 24 students in Years 9 and 10 will be working hard over the next few months to achieve their Bronze Awards. You may see them in the local community as they volunteer their time.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for anyone aged between 14-24. Participating in the DofE gives young people the opportunity to experience new activities and develop existing skills.

There are three progressive levels of programmes which when successfully completed lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold award

The young people create their own DofE programme by choosing a volunteering, physical and skills activity, going on an expedition and, for the Gold Award only, taking part in a residential activity

If you have any queries about the award please contact Mrs Sandison or Mr Venn dofe@huxlownorthantsschuk

Charity Week

During the week of 5th December, we held a series of events to raise awareness and money for both local and international charities. The student leadership team worked hard to sell tickets to the numerous events planned for the week

Staff gave up their time to participate in our own version of ‘I’m a Huxlow Celebrity, get me out of here!’ where Mr Coutts was crowned King of the Academy after eating some strange, but ‘delightful’ dishes.

We held a staff lip sync battle and staff arm wrestling matches where students cheered and supported members of staff all in the name of charity

Lots of students supported Christmas Jumper Day and we raised £178 for Save the Children The Charity Week raised £212.25 for local charity Nanna’s.

Our next big Charity Week commences on March 13th and runs all week, with the Prom committee organising events to raise money for the Prom, Comic Relief and other charities We aim to make it bigger than before so please support.

Water Bottles

The County Schools Challenge is a partnership project run across secondary schools in Northamptonshire.

Each year, it helps thousands of pupils learn about important social issues while teaching them invaluable skills.

With a different theme each year, pupils use a business approach to raise awareness and develop creative ways to tackle a social problem.

Our Northants County School Finalists have developed the idea of a water bottle with a dual purpose of encouraging hydration and communicate key messages. They were extremely excited to have the finished product in their hands.

The water bottles were handed out at a local PL Kicks Tournament and were gratefully received

The next step in this project is for our finalists to deliver an assembly to Irthlingborough Junior School in March and hand out the water bottles The team are very happy and have worked exceptionally hard.

Mental Health Awareness at Huxlow Academy

Huxlow Academy was one of the first pilot schools who started working directly with the NHS to support students with their emotional wellbeing

The Academy works closely with MHST (Mental Health Support Team) to identify and support young people at the earliest opportunity. The MHST team completed an audit of the schools' mental health and wellbeing provision in June 2021 They work on a 1:1 basis with students with low-level mental health and wellbeing needs which would not ordinarily meet the criteria of CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services).

They also work with the school Mental Health Lead to address how best to support students on a more strategic level

MHST staff came into school last term to deliver two important sessions to school staff. These were around behaviours that students express, which can be perceived as negative, yet is actually the way students are trying to tell us that something in their world is not right. Staff were then trained on the language of safety that staff should use with students to support them when they are having difficulties. We hope this will help to break down some of the barriers that students have in communicating with school staff

Huxlow Academy has access to multiple sources of specialist support for mental health and wellbeing, including employing its own highly trained school counsellor. If your child is not their 'usual self', please do reach out to the school for support as soon as possible Everyone needs a little help at times, and we can signpost and refer to the right support as required.

Harry Potter Studios

Year 7&8 had a blast when they went to Harry Potter studio tour in January! We were absorbed in costumes, computer design, plot twists and sets from the films We even tried some Butterbeer and had a photo playing Quidditch!

There was so much to explore and learn about, and will never forget the lifelike 3D dragons, goblins make up and masks and the creepy mechanical spiders in the Forbidden Forest! Characters, that I'm sure will be featuring in our creative writing soon!

& Juliet

On 7th December, a large group of students and 5 staff went to Shaftesbury Theatre in London to see “& Juliet”, which is a relatively new musical based on the story of Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist in the plot in that Juliet discovers there is life after Romeo!

Full of pop classics such as Baby One More Time, Roar, It’s My Life and I Want It That Way, we had a brilliant time. The students (the majority of whom were on the trip as part of a reward opportunity for taking part in Annie Jr back in the Summer) thoroughly enjoyed themselves, behaved superbly and certainly demonstrated respect to all whilst in the theatre.

Watch this space for further opportunities for students to see a musical in the Summer term

PSHE

We have had numerous outside speakers and workshops in to discuss PSHE related topics with our students

Earlier in th a workshop for Year 7 students to experience a live performance of theatre before being led through an educational workshop.

Maddox Jones, a singer/songwriter performed to Years 9 and 10 and discussed issues relating to mental health, vaping, drinking and drug abuse.

Later in the year, Year 8 students will experience a theatre workshop called ‘Smashed’, where they will watch a live performance before participating in a workshop around the topic of drugs and alcohol.

All of these opportunities enable our students to discuss real life issues openly in a positive and safe forum.

Winter Concert

On Wednesday 18th January we held our Winter Concert Postponed from before Christmas, it was fantastic to watch and hear so many diversely talented students.

It was the first time we were able to put on a conce in the hall since the pandemic and every single per performed with maturity and confidence. We watch of performances from advanced GCSE performers, Year 7 students performing in front of a big audien first time, we were delightfully entertained by music dancers and drama performances. Some of the stud already told us they want to perform again, so watc the Summer Showcase!

One of the items in the Winter Concert was a whole-company song, Junior Festival, from our up-coming show Fame Jr., which students are currently rehearsing extremely hard for!

Staff Spotlight.... Mr Whiting

Mr Whiting is a Teacher of Science and Head of Year 9.

"I am the homegrown Science teacher. My aim is to make science engaging and fun to all of my students , which often involves explosions, smells , dissections and a lot of anti-climatic moments.

As Head of Year , I try to motivate my year into being aspirational and achieving their dreams. I always have their backs and occasionally a difficult conversation with them"

Where did you grow up? I grew up about a quarter of a mile from Huxlow on Scarborough Street The Rec was my stomping ground, where I would try to play football , impress all my mates (not with football) and avoid going home when the street lights came on. I went to Huxlow when it was my time. Huxlow was awesome , football on the courts before school , chicken burgers from the canteen and the lessons obviously! (I like learning!)

What did you want to be when you were younger? I didn't really have any set dream jobs, a lot of my friends went to the army or got a trade. The army was appealing, travelling the world etc. I ended up doing BTEC Sports and going to university in Liverpool, with the hope of being a strength and conditioning coach for a sports team Who would play you in a movie? I am a sucker for a good romcom , what's not to like? Laughing while feeling content inside , any film with Kevin Hart is a winner. Who is your biggest role model? My biggest role model was my Pops He had that " can do" attitude and made a succe of his life through hard work He was also fiercely family orien I always respected that.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Florida beaches , theme parks and great weather! Which food is your guilty pleasure? All food Meat = gains a anything sweet to guilt me into working out again. Last book you read? I like reading but don't get time due to work , family and kids

Describe yourself in 3 words? Annoying, empathetic & driven

What piece of advice would you give to 15 year old Mr Whiting? Invest in Tesla and Facebook. Try everything. Do what you enjoy. Don't ask questions. Jump in and deal with the consequences later!

Teaching 4 Learning

Huxlow Starts to Lessons and Retrieval

Over the last term we have introduced a Huxlow Starter slide that is used across the whole school, for each and every lesson.

An example can be seen here

There are several purposes to this slide:

It settles the learners into work straight away

It reduces the cognitive demand to be able to start in a lesson

It introduces some simple recall, helping students to remember more and for longer

It creates an opportunity for self-marking and feedback

To further support this, you may have seen in the previous school letter, we are trying to ensure that students have the equipment to come into lessons and engage with their learning

The expected equipment is:

• Pen (Blue/Black)

• Pencil

• Ruler

• Calculator

• Purple Pen (self and peer marking colour)

• Reading book

• Maths Calculator (optional but highly recommended)

We had our first Rushden/Huxlow Open Evening in November which proved to be a huge success.

There have been several trips to date; Birmingham University Showcase for the Year 13s in October, students studying EPQ experienced a day at the Cambridge University Library in November. A number of subject specific days such as a Photography Field Trip to Kettering and Health & Beauty Spa Day at Rushton Hall also took place

Coming up, the students have the London Residential Trip in April to look forward to, two students have been selected to attend the Lessons from Auschwitz project in March and the Uganda trip for April 2024 has been launched by Mr Coutts. Successful candidates have been selected and are now working towards raising the funds required for the trip
