A B OUT OUR COVE R

This year’s cover represents the landscape of our Terry community. Each person will travel a unique path to excellence that leads them up toward peaks, down into canyons, and everywhere in between. In our lowest places, opportunity, commitment, determination, and support of our Terry Family provide a way upward toward achievements and goals. Our Terry topography- The lines on our map represent different points of elevation. There are a number of peaks, ledges, and low-lying areas. In some places, the incline is very steep. In other places, the route to the top is less challenging. Remember, no matter the terrain your journey leads you through, your fellow Terry Scholars will support you every step of the way.

President’s Letter As we look back on this past year, we reflect on the many opportunities Terry Scholars have had to impact their communities and the world. We have celebrated the accomplishments of so many individuals as they reach and surpass their own personal milestones: starting and leading campus organizations; triumphing in the classroom and taking bold steps to study abroad and immerse in new cultures; recent graduates who have been accepted into professional programs; and alumni who are graduating from prestigious graduate schools and are now ready to embark on their professions. We always delight in reconnecting with our alumni, and this year we enjoyed hosting an unprecedented number of former Terry Scholars as they joined us on campus for 13 fall banquets. For those who couldn’t join us in person, our new networking platform, Terry Connect, is allowing current and former Scholars to search, find, and connect with one another.

President’s Letter

This was our first year to celebrate full graduating classes from all 13 of our partner universities. It is always inspiring to hear the senior speeches and realize the profound impact these graduates will have in the years ahead. We delighted in having so many representatives of our Terry Scholar Alumni Association chapters present at each picnic to welcome our graduates as new alumni. We look forward to watching the alumni chapters continue to grow, as they serve their communities and provide support to our current Scholars.

The end of the academic year found us celebrating one additional milestone – the release of a new documentary film about our founder, Howard Terry. A Generous Life: The Story of Howard Terry was released at special events in Austin, College Station, Dallas, Houston, Lubbock, and San Antonio. It was so much fun to gather Terry Scholars from several decades together to watch and remember Howard and Nancy Terry. The film is now available online through our website, and we are pleased to share it with the entire Terry family. We hope you will enjoy this edition of our annual yearbook, capturing images throughout the year of Terry Scholars embracing our four pillars of excellence: scholarship, leadership, service, and community. Thank you to all who contribute to keeping the legacy of Howard and Nancy Terry alive and thriving. Lives are being changed for the better, and in turn, those individuals are paying it forward every day to help make the world a better place. We’re proud of each and every one of them!

YVONNE MOODY 1987 Texas A&M Terry Scholar Foundation President and Executive Director

“Being a Terry Scholar means that I am never alone; I get to have a family away from home. It means I never had to worry about how I was going to attend college and allowed me to completely immerse myself in academics and self-growth. Being a Terry Scholar means that I am set up for success due to the endless resources and networking opportunities that are provided. Most importantly, being a Terry Scholar means that I get to be a part of something that is much bigger than myself.”

NANCY AND HOWARD TERRY

Our Founders Howard Terry 1916-2012

Howard L. Terry, a native Texan, was born in Cameron in 1916. His family owned a filling station where young Howard worked during high school. Later, he would work for the county, shoveling gravel. He attended the University of Texas at Austin on an athletic scholarship and earned his B.B.A. in 1938. “Mr. Terry knew that he had survived in the war while other people with whom he was close had not. I think that had an impact on his life. He felt a responsibility to do something important with his life because he had managed to survive. This was a motivating factor in his commitment to those around him.”

He was employed by Procter & Gamble until 1942, when he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a PT boat commander in the Pacific during World War II. He later returned to Procter & Gamble, from which he was recruited to set up a chain of appliance stores, serving as general manager until 1951. At that time, Mr. Terry went into business for himself in lumber, building, and development—building several residential subdivisions in Texas and other states. He had a natural gift for finance, and over the following years, he gradually built an empire of businesses in the fields of construction, banking, real estate, and oil and gas. Some of his businesses included: Marathon Manufacturing, Crutcher Resources, Allied Bancshares, and Farm & Home Savings. Beginning in 1979, he became a director and chairman of the executive committee of Penn Central Corp., a position he held until 1986. In 1981, he

Our Founders founded the Terry Companies, a multi-state corporation involved in oil and gas exploration and development. In 1986, Mr. Terry and his wife, Nancy, created the Terry Foundation and helped personally select the Scholars for a number of the early cohorts. He maintained regular office hours and was active in the management of the Foundation until the very end of his life. Howard Terry’s long and successful life came to an end in 2012 at age 95. “One wonderful thing about Mr. Terry was that, although we only saw him a few times per year, he always knew every scholar by name. He would remember things from our interviews. And he took a real interest in what we were doing at school... what we were studying... how things were going. So, here’s Mr. and Mrs. Terry, who founded the Foundation... and they truly had this interest in what was going on in our lives. It was almost as if we

Despite his series of remarkable successes in business endeavors in many fields, Howard Terry often referred to the Terry Foundation as his finest achievement. The impact of his generosity and vision will be felt by Texans and their families for generations to come.

Nancy Terry 1927-2012

Mrs. Nancy (Myers) Terry, who would later play a primary role in supporting and encouraging the Terry Scholars, was an active student herself, participating in cheerleading, tennis, skiing, and athletics during her school years. Later, she graduated at the top of her class from the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester, completing her training at the Highland Hospital in Rochester. “Mrs. Terry took an active interest in the lives of the Scholars and treasured the early gifts given by the graduating seniors. 1927 Born in Ogdensburg, New York

With her love of art, she particularly treasured anything that was made by the Scholars themselves, including drawings, paintings and picture collages.” – Yvonne Moody (TAMU 1987)

After relocating to Texas and marrying Howard Terry, she continued her active lifestyle, but her newer interests skewed toward a more creative angle. She cultivated skills in pursuits such as gardening, painting, and photography, with which she stayed busy for most of her long life. Mrs. Terry will be fondly remembered for her engaging personality and quick wit, and sincere and heart-felt interest in all of the Scholars over the years.

History

7 “The key thing they’ve done for me is giving me a sense of obligation to be the best I can be for the rest of my life... to ask, ‘How can I personally invest in people who need something that I can offer?’” – Patrick Frasier (UT 2004)

2018-2 019 YE AR BOO K

With profound business success over the decades and their family’s needs met, the Terrys developed a growing desire to give back to the community and, specifically, to help young people to reach their goals in higher education. Mr. Terry never forgot the helping hand he received to attend college and was determined to extend that same help to a new generation of students. After evaluating ideas as varied as university campus construction projects and endowed-chair faculty positions, the Terrys were still not satisfied. Knowing that universities are more than buildings and classrooms, Howard Terry had repeatedly declined to allow the universities to honor his previous contributions by placing his name on campus structures: “Mortar and bricks will eventually be torn down,” he reasoned. The Terrys believed, in the long term, that a state is only as good as the educated citizens it produces. Thus was born a desire to invest in the students who would attend the public colleges and universities in Texas.

Foundation History

Investing in Students

Ultimately, the Terrys arrived at a plan to invest in the students of Texas themselves through the Terry Foundation, a scholarship program designed to exist into perpetuity. This plan has not only fulfilled the Terrys’ original dream of improving the state of Texas through its citizens, but also provided a path enabling likeminded individuals, Scholars and others, to continue the mission far into the foreseeable future. The endowment was established in December 1986, and the first class of Terry Scholars was chosen in the summer of 1987. These 17 Scholars, along with the Terrys and those who had supported the Terrys’ endeavor, would form the base for the close-knit community soon to be known as the Terry Family. 1986 The Terry Foundation is established by Howard and Nancy Terry 1987 First class of Terry Scholars at Texas A&M and UT Austin 1991 First Picnic at Winedale | First $1MM in scholarships given

Growth and Expansion During the first 17 years of the Foundation’s history, Scholars attended only the University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University. In the fall of 2004, the Foundation Scholarship Program expanded for the first time, when Terry Scholars were named at the University of Houston and at Texas State University. Continued growth provided scholarships over subsequent years to the current total of 13 universities. Growth in the Foundation endowment eventually made possible an additional program expansion when the Board approved a new component to the program: scholarships for students transferring completed college hours to any of the participating Terry universities. Commencing with the selection of 158 Terry Transfer Scholars in 2013, the Terry Transfer Scholarship program is the largest of its kind in the state.

Foundation History

The Impact

A Growing Legacy Howard Terry was active in the management of the Foundation up until the very end of his long life. He died in 2012 at age 95. The Foundation lost its second Founder later that same year, when Nancy Terry passed away at the age of 85. The Terry Foundation has become larger than the Terrys ever imagined, fulfilling in the process their dreams of making a difference in the lives of students across the state. Today the Terrys’ legacy is carried forward by the thousands of Terry Scholars who bear their name and embody the Foundation’s Four Pillars – Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Community. All Terry Scholars pledge to give back to the Foundation and to the world with their time, talent, and resources. Terry Scholar Alumni ensure that the Terry Family continues to thrive through their mentorship and service on the Board of Directors and Alumni Advisory Board, and through their participation in the Terry Scholar Alumni Association.

Since its inception, the Terry Scholarship Program has helped over 5,000 college students achieve their goals in higher education. The Foundation Board oversees a large endowment and now includes six members who are Terry Scholar Alumni.

THE FOUNDATION

Program The Terry Foundation’s goal is to improve and develop the state of Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state’s finest public universities. The Foundation hopes these students will have a significant impact on the future leadership of the state and nation. To achieve this goal, the Foundation awards scholarships to students who meet the high standards set by the Founders. What began in 1986 as a small scholarship program at the University of Texas and Texas A&M University is now the largest private source of scholarships for 13 universities across Texas.

The Selection Process Formal interviews are conducted annually by the Foundation concurrently in several cities around the state, in April for the Traditional Scholarship program and in June for the Transfer Scholarship program. Finalists meet with a six-member panel consisting of members of the Foundation Board of Directors, Scholar Alumni, and current Terry Scholars. The interview panel makes the final selections, and new Scholars are notified prior to the start of the following academic year.

“Being a Terry Scholar from day one meant focusing and excelling in academics. The Foundation wants students to get an education that helps scholars grow as individuals. The Terry Scholarship gave me the time to discover my passion and interests whether it be as a leader on campus or as a volunteer in the community. As a Terry Scholar, I have made life-long friends, met compassionate and honest mentors, and had unforgettable memories over the last four years. Being a Terry Scholar has changed everything for me.”

Terry Events Just as Mr. Terry’s legacy extends far beyond brick and mortar, the Terry Foundation offers its Scholars more than just classes and study groups. The Terry Foundation calendar includes activities, both stafforganized and Scholar-led, designed to enrich the lives of the Terry Scholars through fellowship and community. These events also encourage individual growth through leadership and service opportunities.

An event was held on each campus just prior to the start of the fall semester. For new Scholars, the orientation is designed to focus special emphasis on the transition faced by firstyear and transferring college students. Each day’s events included presentations on the Foundation Scholarship Program by Foundation executive management and staff. At the conclusion of the orientation programs, the new Scholars enjoyed networking with each other and with Scholars from the other cohorts.

In Memoriam We were deeply saddened by the loss of two members of our Terry Family this year. Laurel and Erik, like all Terry Scholars, enriched our community with laughter and kindness, while fearlessly pursuing their individual goals and dreams. We will celebrate and remember them by continuing to pave the way for others, and by ensuring that future Scholars fully realize and share their own unique gifts as members of our Terry Family.

To our Campus Partners:

Campus Teams

For more than 30 years, the Terry Foundation has pursued its mission of helping thousands of young Texans to help themselves. Mr. and Mrs. Terry’s goal for their Scholars was for them to not only achieve their dreams, but to do so debt-free. They believed the leaders they helped to educate would recognize the importance of helping those who came behind them. And the Terrys recognized that building a community starts with a shared commitment and a face-toface interaction.
