Sustainable Regeneration of the Salford Cathedral Design Proposal for a Music Cafe by Hafid Raza Student at the University of Salford ID: 00617141 Re-creating the City; Re-use and Regeneration Regeneration of Salford Cathedral: Heritage and innovation intersect in this portfolio. Our focus was dual, starting with a meticulous self-conducted survey to comprehend the intricacies of the cathedral’s condition and extract design inspiration deeply rooted in its heritage. Avoiding external reports, we customized our approach to fit the heritage-led regeneration philosophy.

Our aim is plain – from knowing bounds in the North transept to manufacturing a Music Café, we strike on protection and novelty. This portfolio is an enduring commitment to moving Salford Cathedral into a contemporary relevance of its heritage echoes.

Timber Construction: Noteworthy for its sustainable approach, the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel employs timber as the primary construction material. This choice aligns with contemporary sustainability principles, offering a potential inspiration for the Music Café’s eco-friendly design.

Free-Form Structure: The distillery departs from the conventional cubic shapes.

Free-form design enhances flexibility as it promotes an energetic impression that reflects the natural character of things.

Symmetry and Repetitive Geometry: Aesthetic harmony is achieved through symmetry and repetitive geometric patterns. These design elements contribute to the chapel’s visual appeal and may serve as a guide for creating a pleasing and balanced atmosphere within the Music Café.

Fragmented Slicing: This distinct cutting impact and layering of the architectural component create a modern twist. Fragment the layers differently to create height and width variations through their differing heights and dimensions.

Skeletal Structure: The chapel’s skeletal framework, with columns bending inwards to create multiple arches, imparts a sense of intricate craftsmanship. This structural elegance could influence the Music Café’s design language, echoing the delicate balance of aesthetics and functionality.

Glass Transparency: The glass-made distillery has an unbroken linkage with natural surroundings.

Transparency does not only ensure integrity but it is also appropriate in relation to the nearby music café and preservation of natural daylight (which should be preserved).

The Café to the Salford Cathedral is more than an architectural addition; it exemplifies heritage-led regeneration with multiple values. Economically, it wakes up the economy by presenting unlimited stage for such as gatherings and even performances that contribute to a sense of community. It also evolves into a social center linking different age groups through music and art, adding to the cathedral’s position as a locus for collective events.

The Café fits quite well within the historical of Salford Cathedral culturally. Drawing on the rich heritage of the cathedral, its design mimics that of a gothic window to introduce a modern insert. The living monument café, the continuation of knowledge entwined between past and present does not change.

The environmentally conscious architecture is sustainable design and contains curtain walls that conform to Passivhaus specifications. The cafe minimizes its environmental impact while also acting as an example of how buildings should strive to optimize the use of natural light, as well as other energy reducing features.

Essentially, the Cafe incorporates economic livelihood, social harmony, cultural conservation and environmental sensitivity. It is a celebration of heritage-led regeneration and proof that innovation can coexist harmoniously with honour, reviving the legacy of the Salford Cathedral.

Final Design: Innovative Departure: It is said that the pinnacle of design development timeline results into final design detracting from direct replication to offer an inventive and intentional architectural solution. This is the story of a journey, in which initial inspiration comes to maturity and unfolds into a concept that reconciles heritage with contemporary functionalities.

This timeline incorporates the iterative nature of architecture, representing the dynamic process through which architectural design evolves and is deliberately manipulated to achieve a meaningful end in mind.

1. Initial Concept - Gothic Frame (2D Drawing): Inspiration from Site Visit: The design journey begins with a 2D drawing inspired by an initial spark derived from the essence of gothic frames observed during a site visit.

Fragmented Arch Massing Model: The initial idea develops into a massing model on 3D gradually, introducing the concept of shattered building. Gothic arch revolved around a center line, captivating something disc-like to begin.

3. Improved Slicing - Layered Arches Visible: Enhanced Fragmentation: Improving the slicing, the design advances from the initial model. The structure starts to develop pronounced arches at different levels giving it depth and a three-dimensional look. The fragmented effect develops into a more complex architectural shape.

Imitating Cathedral Layout: The model evolved with the need for efficiency and changed to copy the layout of the cathedral. This generates a cross-shaped architectural design that utilizes arches and space optimally. This step is very important towards a better and coherent design.
