Cities on Highway 289 see big jumps in sales tax revenue

The City of Howe's economic development office is trying to sell US Highway 75 as the next big growth spurt in North Texas But year-end sales tax figures indicate that cities located along Highway 289 are experiencing rapid increases in spending along that corridor

While Gainesville saw the largest increase in sales tax revenue from 2017 at 31 percent, the next five surrounding cities each touch Highway 289 in their city Gunter experienced 29 5 percent growth followed by Dorchester with 22 31 percent (although the difference was only a jump in $1,000) Celina clocked in at 21 percent and Sherman grew by 16 percent Tioga jumped by 15 69 percent as well Only Collinsville, strangely, grew at a less rapid pace than any local city with positive growth with 3 87 percent

Howe's sales tax growth over last year was 4 48 percent, just ahead of Bonham's 4 47

Four nearby cities experienced negative growth in sales tax as Leonard was -1 56 percent, Ector was -2 78 percent, Pottsboro as down significantly at -12 96 percent, and Southmayd took a huge loss at -18 64 percent

The city that brought in the most money was not surprisingly Sherman, who raked in over $22 million in 2018 Gainesville was next at $8 8 million, and Denison rounded out the big money at $7 5 million

The City of Howe's $351,718 total for 2018 is a new high surpassing last year's total of $336,623 Howe's figures have grown 28 11 percent in the most recent five-year period since the beginning of 2014
