October 1, 1937 - Howe Messenger

The traffic light ordered by the City Council several weeks ago arrived this week and was installed Wednesday by a Texas Power and Light Company crew at the intersection of Haning Street and Highway 75

The light was put in operation at 2:15 Wednesday afternoon The first car to pass after it was turned on was a Dallas County car, bearing the license number 21-434 The first car to run a red light was driven by a Bob Davis He also was the second, having passed the light en route to the south part of town then returning a few minutes later to pass it again on the red He never did see the light

Passing cars decreases speed perceptibly immediately after the light was hung Most motorists observed the signals Wednesday afternoon, those failing to do so being accustomed to driving here and unaware that the signal had been erected

WW Shaw was sworn in as special officer to call attention to the light An ordinance has been adopted by the council and will take effect immediately after publication in this issue of the

Messenger It provides for a fine of from $3 00 to $50 00 for failure to observe the signal and arrests will be made immediately for violation, Mayor WP Thompson says

The ordinance:

WHEREAS, there has been installed, at the intersections of Duke, Davis, Hanning, O'Connell, Tutt, and Kosse Streets with State Highway number six (6) Federal Highway number seventy five (75) in the City of Howe, Texas an electric traffic signal with alternating green, amber, and red lights or signals, or green and red lights or signals, it being determined by the city council that the green lights shall signify that vehicles and pedestrians moving toward the same shall proceed forward into and across the street intersections, the amber lights shall indicate that change is about to be made from green to red lights, or the contrary, as the case may be, and the lights when red shall signify that vehicles and pedestrians moving toward the same shall come to a full or complete stop and not proceed into or across the intersections until return of the green lights; Now, Therefore;

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE

Section 1 That it shall hereafter be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle or attempt to operate any vehicle or for any pedestrian to walk, or attempt to walk into or across the intersections of Duke , Davis, Hanning, O'Connell, Tutt, or Kosse Streets and State Highway number six (6) Federal Highway seventy five (75) in the City of Howe, Texas when the red or amber lights are displayed facing or opposing the direction of said vehicle or pedestrian; and it shall be the duty of every person operating a vehicle, upon approaching such intersections, to promptly proceed in the same direction across such intersections, or at when vehicle is standing at or near such intersections, and pedestrians may proceed in the same direction across such intersections, upon the appearance of the green light facing and opposing the direction of any vehicle or pedestrians; provided that any vehicle may turn from its original course to the right or left into the intersecting streets or highway only upon display of the green light facing or opposing the original course of such vehicle

Section 2 That pedestrians shall have the right-of-way, when proceeding across such intersections upon the display of the green light facing and opposing the direction of such pedestrians, over all vehicles which may turn to the right after entering such intersections for the purpose of proceeding along the intersecting streets or highway and over all vehicles no matter in what direction such vehicles may be proceeding

Section 3 That the term

"intersections" as such used in this ordinance, shall when applied to the operation of vehicles, mean that area at crossing of such streets or highway that is embraced within lines projected at right angles to and across said streets or highway from property line to property line, and when applied to the movement of pedestrians, same shall mean all of said area except the sidewalks therein

Section 4 That the term "vehicle" as used in this ordinance, shall mean all motor driven vehicles, horse-driven vehicles, bicycles, and all other means of travel than by foot

The need for protection of life and property at the above-mentioned intersections creates an imperative public necessity and emergency requiring the suspension of the rule providing for the reading of this ordinance on three (3) several days said rule is suspended hereby and this ordinance shall take effect after its passage and ordinance and per publication And it is so ordained

The City Council of the City of Howe, Texas.

Is 2019

Hey Taylor - Where’s the housing market headed? My wife and I are on the fence about buying in 2019, mostly because we’re nervous about buying right before a big price drop Any insight? - Rick

Hey Rick - I have insight, but I do not have a crystal ball I’m happy to give you some of my personal thoughts based on the information available, but I have to ask that you refrain from telling everyone that Taylor Kovar thinks he knows exactly where the real estate market is headed and when If that were true, I’d be a multibillionaire

1 Strong economy Employment numbers and tax rates have the economy surging, and it doesn’t seem like a potential housing bubble will threaten all American financials in the way we saw in 2008 Until we see signs of an economic drag, it’s probably not smart to predict the housing market will take a drastic turn However, the one economic factor that’s trailing in some sectors is wage growth, and that’s a problem that directly affects home supply and sales Furthermore, you have to think about your local jobs and wages in addition to the national numbers Right now the big picture is good Until that changes, house prices should continue to rise

2 Rise in construction Since demand has remained high, it looks like construction and development is starting to pick

Living with children

up In Texas, we’re se steady uptick in deve some of the larger cit availability is a big fa current housing clima houses should help th stay steady. Again, yo will determine supply cities and suburbs are of buildable space, an markets might strugg areas where development happens relatively quickly Essentially, if houses are being built in your neighborhood, you have a better chance of finding something that will increase in value.

3 How much can you spend? It looks like prices are going to keep rising While there will be some sort of correction at some point, the market will recover again and then we’ll eventually see prices that dwarf the numbers we’re seeing today This cycle continues to repeat, making any property you can buy today something that will almost certainly go up in value over the course of a few decades So, can you afford to buy a house? Don’t think about the $20,000 you might save if you wait a year, and instead think about whether or not you can comfortably buy something at the going rate If you can, I would say it’s a good idea

The market will change, Rick I’m not sure when or how much, but it’s going to happen My advice is to worry less about what could change and focus on what you can and should do now Good luck!

“So, anyway, after they take showers I lay out their school clothes for the next day And then ”

“Hold on right there,” “How old are your girls again?”

“Um, they’re seven and five,” she answered, being the thirty-something mother of the girls in question. “Why?”

“I guess I need you to explain to me why you’re doing that ”

“You mean laying out their clothes the night before?”

“Yes Why are you doing that?”

“Well, I, well, if I didn’t, I don’t know, they might pick out something inappropriate ”

“Like what? T-shirts with satanic messages on them?”

(Laughing) “Oh, no, not that! I mean like tops and bottoms that don’t match ”

“Like stripes and polka dots together? Or two shades of orange that clash?”

“Yes, something like that ”

“That’s you used the word inappropriate that’s inappropriate? I thought inappropriate was like punching someone in the face for no reason Wearing stripes and polka dots is inappropriate?”

“Well, I mean, the other kids might laugh at them.”

“Okay, so here’s my very important question: I seriously doubt that kids this age have a developed fashion sense, but that aside, so what if some other kid or kids did laugh?”

(Long pause) “Well, I don’t want my daughters to be made fun of ”

At this point, I had to suppress the almost irrepressible urge to tell this mother that I hadn’t been born yesterday; that I knew the real reason she picked out her daughters’ clothes every evening

The real reason is that with rare exception, today’s moms personalize everything – and I do mean EVERYTHING – that happens to their children or that their children do somehow, to get by her Designated Micromanager and wore to school an outfit consisting of stripes and polka dots (I’m having memories of when I was a hippie), her DM, when she found out, would be concerned, convinced even, that people might have been talking about and laughing at HER by proxy Furthermore, even if the child in question came home and did not complain of being mocked, mom would still be certain that someone out there is thinking that she’s one of the Bad Mommies you hear about

Choosing and laying out a sevenyear-old child’s clothes –something my mother must’ve stopped doing for me before my third birthday because I have no memory of it – is emblematic of the current state of motherhood in America It’s why I often say to audiences hither and yon, “Raising children has become threatening to the mental health of American women ”

I mean, they worry about everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING! Every detail is important, which means, essentially, that in their minds there are no details Everything and anything that goes wrong is potentially apocalyptic; therefore, everything must be managed Everything even slightly off the beam is cause for reading yet another book (Did I actually just say that?)

The mother in question came to me because she was having lots of conflicts with her daughters Good for them, I told her They refuse to let you tell them what foot to lead with when they begin walking We made a list of what was really, truly important parenting stuff to which she absolutely had to attend It was fairly short, actually.

I heard from her three months later She’s no longer in nearconstant conflict with her daughters; she’s having a much, much happier motherhood; and she’s gone back to college Yay! I mean, YAY! You go, girl! That’s the way to do it!
