Faith by Debbie Wallis

unwavering obedient faith Job was more steadfast than any other of his time, and Jacob prevailed with men and God Joseph endured many trials and tribulations, Moses led, Samuel served, and Ruth remained loyal David repented and had the heart of God, Isaiah obeyed the call, Esther risked her life, and Elijah took a stand and Daniel had an excellent spirit
“But even if He doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up,” Daniel 3:18
Daniel lived his entire life as a faithful servant of the Lord, even though he also lived in very ungodly environments throughout all those years He served the most powerful pagan kings in the world, but never lost his love and loyalty to the one true God Even in the midst of captivity, Daniel maintained an amazingly excellent spirit God saw to it that Daniel powerfully impacted those he served in authority “Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him,” Daniel 6:3-4 Every great Old Testament character had remarkable distinguishing traits Noah stood for righteousness in a depraved generation Abraham had
King Nebuchadnezzar gave his armies instructions to capture the wisest and most knowledgeable men to serve in the king’s palace, and teach them the ways of their people We don’t know how many of Israel’s best men were captured but among those were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah They were to receive the very best of treatment and to be groomed to serve in high ranking offices of government Their food and wine was to come from the king’s kitchen, prepared by the king’s chef
They were to be assimilated into the Babylonian culture and worship their god, Bel Immediately they were given new names, Daniel (means God is my judge) was changed to Belteshazzar (Bel protect the king); the others became Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego God’s spirit enabled them to hold to all they knew was right and pleasing to God "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself "
Daniel 1:8 He wouldn’t eat the king’s food Daniel wouldn’t bow to the king, he was thrown into a lions den, he obeyed the king as long as it wasn’t against God’s laws, and when God gave him the wisdom to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams it put him in a “political” position from then on Daniel wrote the book of
Daniel and never referred to himself as Belteshazzer. He knew Who was his judge The reason that some Christian’s have trouble is that nothing is determined prior to the temptation Who you see yourself answering to or the lack of it, will determine your decisions When you are faced with a decision and your mind is not made up before hand of the right and the wrongs, most likely your decision will be wrong Decisions can easily come from where our heart tells us to go That sounds like a good thing from a Hallmark Card but it’s not! "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things It is incurable No one can understand how deceitful it is,” Jeremiah 17:9 We cannot trust our emotions We must trust in the truth from God’s word We are to guard our heart from worldly influences and renew it with God’s word each and every day Daniel was probably in his teens when he was taken captive No mention is made of his family, but it’s likely he was separated from his parents and siblings and lost contact with them His training period (bootcamp) for the King’s service was 3 years Daniel lived to serve three powerful kings of history for almost eighty years Daniel’s entire adult life was spent as a faithful servant of the Lord in the households and governments of three mighty pagan kings Daniel’s godliness and his spiritual integrity was never compromised and never diminished Daniel’s intimate relationship with God and his ability to know and understand divine matters caused him to stand head-and-shoulders above most of the greatest men of
History
“Daniel purposed himself,” those strong words suggest the harsh conflict between his godly beliefs and those of others around him He refused to allow Babylon’s ungodly beliefs be forced on him Daniel should prompt us to consider our own relationship with today’s worldly culture Be brutally honest with yourself about whether you’ve compromised your beliefs by doing things the world’s way rather than God’s way Overnight, Daniel’s beliefs, convictions and allegiances were subjected to the larger, more demanding and restrictive Babylonian culture We face that same scenario today Daniel teaches us that a true child of God can live for God in any environment, and in the worst, most godless lands Satan attempts to disenfranchise people from their rights and privileges with God The pressure to conform or change was as great on Daniel as it is on us today Daniel proved that compromise is not inevitable
“And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men! The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them,” Daniel 3:27 If you don’t have a Bible please contact me at sfadebbie@yahoo com and I will provide you one You are blessed to be a blessing.
Country Living and Country
Home magazines have featured articles about little crudely-formed vases painted with bluebonnets I have been collecting these pieces for 30 years, but lately they show up less and less and are harder to find at reasonable prices These little gems were produced by Meyer Pottery which opened for business in 1887 near Atascosa, Texas The pottery founders, J.F.W. (William) Meyer and Franz Schultz, immigrated to Texas in 1885 Schultz married Meyers’ daughter and their sons, Frank and Gustav, became potters in the family business The business thrived through the 1920s and continued operating until 1964 under the sons’ leadership The pottery made every form of utilitarian ware needed by homesteaders: chicken feeders and waterers, churns crocks, preserving jars, jugs, milk bowls, mixing bowls mugs, and ant traps Rarely will any of the pieces be marked
By the time that Frank and Gus took over the business, demand for common household items jugs, jars, bowls, and churns had diminished So in the 1940s, the Meyer brothers started producing pieces for the florist trade and what they termed “art pottery “ Meyer art pottery did not bear a resemblance to the art pottery being prooduced in other parts of the country Rather, the Meyer art wares were made on a potter wheel or pressed into crude molds Ater firing the pieces at a low temperature, they were decorated with oil paint Some were dipped in variegated colors to give them a marbled effect The bluebonnetembellished pottery was decorated by hand Some of these pieces were decorated with desert and cactus scenes in naturral colors You will find vases, jugs, bowls, toothpick and match holders, flower bowls, banks, and strawberry pots They vary in size from a miniature 2 inches to 14 inches tall. These items were sold in Kress Stores, the Alamo gift shop, and the Buckhorn Saloon Current prices range from $12 to $60 depending on size and condition For more informtiom, check American Stoneswares: The Art and Craft of Utilitarian Potters, by Georgiana Greer (1996, Schiffer Publishing) or The Meyer Family: Master Potters of Texas, Georgiana Greer and Harding Black (nd, Trinity University Press, op)
