County Commissioner's Note
by Commissioner Jeff Whitmire
The morning before we sealcoat a road, we have to order a tanker truck so asphalt oil with a value of $9,000 Rain and asphalt oil are not friends If the roads we have planned to work on are wet, we simply cannot do the work If it rains, I am the faced with what to do with $9000 worth of oil I cannot store until the next day If the weather forecast is looking at a good chance of widespread rain, we cancel the order and do other work

This week has been a good example of how weather can slow down your seasonal plan. We have had a week where everyday has had a significant chance of rain, too high a chance to risk $9,000; and yet we have had minimal rain
We do use these days productively (pothole patching, mowing etc ), just not in the way we hope to this time of year Hopefully we will get some much needed rain in the next few days and then get back to some dry weather

that he had been chosen to be an apostle by Jesus Christ and by God the Father He was writing a letter, with authority, addressing them following a false message
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another,” John 13:35
I’ve had the opportunity to be the face, hands and feet of the church to my community In those times I met individuals who have been hurt by the church in the past and their pain runs deep I could offer a listening ear and apologize to them for what happened but it’s only through understanding and forgiveness that healing happens The church is full of imperfect people because we the people are the church We seem to want to think that the Bible is pointing a nagging finger at the nonbelievers but most of the writings in the New Testament were written because the church has never been perfect Most, if not all, of the letters were written to believers in Jesus Christ to solve problems in the church Galatians was written to solve legalism, Colossians to solve deviation, Timothy to solve tension in choosing church leadership, Philippians to solve conflict and selfish ambition and 2 Corinthians to solve problems centered on pride and arrogant religious activity The first of Revelations was written to seven churches and one was so unhealthy they were warned they would be vomited out! “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth,” Revelations 3:16
Paul opened his letter to the churches in the region of Galatia by saying
“I am shocked that you have so quickly turned from God, who chose you because of His kindness and loving mercy You have believed a different message that pretends to be the Good News but there is only one true message You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth and want you to turn away from the truth concerning Christ,” Galatians 1:6-7 “I’m not trying to please people I want to please God If I tried to please people I would not be a servant of Christ,” Galatians 1:10 Do you get caught up in being a people pleaser? We are to be a God pleaser! Paul was speaking to Christians just like you and I “You were doing so well until someone made you turn from the truth And that person was certainly not sent by the one who chose you A little yeast can change a whole batch of dough,” Galatians 5:7-9 Yes, we still battle religious legalism in the church today but we battle lawlessness more so God gave Moses the law for our benefit It is good for us to know, obey and see how far from perfection we are without Him As a new believer we are to study, learn and obey the Law As we mature in Christ, through studying His word and obeying His Law, our faith grows because we see God is who He says He is and does what He says He does He is a promise keeper It’s a healthy fear of the Lord that makes us keep the law but it’s our faith that changes our heart to desire to follow Him Today the church wants to discredit the Law and write doctrines of a different believe “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” John 1:1 God remains the same no matter how much the church changes to follow the world “My friends, you were chosen to be free So don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do anything you want Use it as an opportunity to serve each other with love All the Law says can be summed up in the command to love others as much as you love yourself,” Galatians 5:1314 To love someone is to seek their best interest. Let’s keep it real, I can love someone without even liking them I can, and I do love people that I don’t like and so can you I may find someone irritating and frustrating but still genuinely want what’s best for them Love doesn’t mean avoiding tough conversations or life-on-life accountability, but it does mean that it comes from a loving, humble, gracious and patient heart even if the person hearing it doesn’t receive it with love That is the mind of Christ Everyone didn’t except everything Jesus said with the love He said it with If they had He wouldn’t have left two on the cross needing forgiveness
“A new command I give you: Love one another As I have loved you, so you must love one another By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another," John 13:34-35 Christians will never experience perfect relationships but these truths will help you change how you process hurts from other
Christians It’s a waste of time to remain a victim no matter if you’ve been hurt in or out of the church People are people and hurting people hurt people. God knew we needed to choose to seek after His perfect heart to be able to love each other Imagine you were shot! If you are hurt physically your first response is to survive and seek immediate medical help But emotional and spiritual hurts seem to bring about a response unlike any other wound When we are hurt by people we are close to, we tend to focus on the “shooter” and our wound instead of the Healer Who wants to be called upon. This is one of the devils most effective strategies to keeps us a victim You are not a victim, you have a Redeemer and His

The popularity of paper dolls gave birth to a craft idea that enjoyed popularity in the 1920s and 1930s up until the 1950s: ribbon paper dolls (aka ribbon ladies or ribbon pictures) Kits were developed that consisted of a cardstock paper doll and instructions on how to cut and apply ribbon, bits of fabric, lace, feathers, small beads, sequins and other bric-a-brac to create a fancy outfit on the doll
Mainly the Bucilla Corporation of Hazelton, PA or Doll-Lee-Dolls of Wollaston, MA manufactured the kits Bucilla kits included a paperdoll body, instructions, materials to make the doll’s clothes, and a stamped or etched 8 1/2” x 10 1/2” frame with a stiff black backing and a sheet of glass Doll-LeeDolls kits only provided the paper doll and a list of materials necessary for completing the picture This gave the crafter an opportunity to choose her own color scheme and use her own scraps, which ultimately insured that each picture was entirely unique. D-L-D kits cost a dime apiece; Bucilla kits sold for $1 or $1 25
Two of the common kit designs were “Colonial Dame” (a Southern Belle who stands in profile and holds a parasol and basket of flowers) and “Sunbonnet Girl” (her face is hidden by the rim of her sunbonnet) who carries a circular nosegay They are a takeoff of Molly and May, the Sunbonnet Babies that Eulalie Osgood Grover introduced in her 1902 book the “Sunbonnet Babies’ Book ” Although most of the paper dolls in the kits were women, you could also find babies to dress
Other designs include Little BoPeep and Little Miss Muffet, Harlequin and Columbine in Commedia dell’Arte black and white costumes, a Marilyn Monroe-type vampish doll, bride and bridesmaids dolls, 1920s bobbed-hair vamps, and Spanishlooking designs with large fans and wearing woven serapes
Prices range from $15 -$25 for sunbonnet babies to $60-$100 for rare bride dolls Condition is critical to price (dirty, waterdamaged items, skirts, hats or other clothing with raveled edges, and synthetic fabrics and cheap machine-made lace all lower the price by half or more). Mohair or cotton-thread hair are rarer than dolls with hair made of paper Pink, champagne, ivory, yellow, and green are the common dress colors: blue is unusual Frenchknotted bouquets rather than lace or ribbon are desirable

These ribbon doll pictures are not considered rare, but they are a bit hard to find these days, as are the original kits and patterns from the ’20s and ’30s, and even the ’50s
