"When we got the Loy Lake, we saw some other projects that were really really nice, but ours was magnificent " said Welch "There was another trailer that was a 16 foot flatbed There was also a cattleshoot that I thought might win There was also a hay fork that was reserve grand champion "

After the judging was over, they were complimented by the judge and told that they would have a nice chance at Houston

The boys started a project back in October to build a trailer from ground-up The students even added a flare to the interior by torching the wood and giving it a burnt look They put in 410 man hours overall by working on the trailer during ag classes during weekdays and then would get help on weekends from some of the dads such as Jerry Welch who has expertise in welding and Bob Duerr who helped with the blueprint book The students cut the boards, burned the boards, assembled the unit and painted it a charcoal metallic color that stood out at the show

Part of the project is showing the progress with pictures from beginning through the ending The students are then questioned on the procedures of assembly in order to make sure that the parents aren't the ones that actually completed the project

The trailer that they decided to put together was similar to one that won first place two years ago

Cody Welch says that the project was a little overwhelming at times especially when they had to work on weekends and didn't even get the finishing touches on the trailer until just two days before the show

As far as the burnt wood look, Welch says that may have put them over the top. "I've never seen one done like that before but we decided we were going to put wood in it and then burn it half way through "

The school doesn't foot the bill for the project so this was funded by the families and the trailer has already been sold for $8,000 which turned a profit of $1,500 over what it cost to build Welch says that
