Storytelling & book purchase service for schools www.howbraveisthewren.com
how brave is the wren is a mobile children’s bookshop, we offer a storytelling service for schools and specialise in sourcing beautifully written books created by authors, illustrators, artists and designers. Housed within a bespoke converted caravan, how brave is the wren provides a magical setting that can inspire children to take an active interest in reading and literature. By offering the opportunity to learn in a new environment we can help to foster greater engagement, nurturing creativity and imagination.
Key Stage 1
Our service is predominantly aimed at Key Stage 1, we are able to contribute towards reading comprehension, assisting children to “develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding” We do this by offering them a wide range of stories, ones that they are familiar with and those which they may not have heard before, encouraging children to discuss key elements of the story and to explain their understanding of the stories. Our service can contribute to children gaining “extensive experience of listening to, sharing and discussing a wide range of high-quality books with other adults and each other to engender a love of reading” REF: Statutory Guidance:National Curriculum England: www.gov.uk
The selection of books and schedule is tailor made to suit individual school programmes and timetables. We can cater for up to 15 children per session, the running time and number of sessions is structured in consideration of the school size. For example with a four form entry school we can cater for one year group per day by running 8 x 20 min sessions for 15 children at a time Book selections are made in consulation with the school, and are often tailored to suit learning themes, for example if the school is exploring themes of space we may recommend a story such as “Moon Man” by Tomi Ungerer a humourous tale with an unusual concept and stunning illustrations to capture their imagination. We would also offer non-fiction books such as “Professor Astro Cats Frontiers of Space” by Dr Dominic Wallace & Ben Newman, full of facts and told through the narrative of an adventurous cat!! This book would be provided for pupils to explore in more detail back in the classroom, extending the experience beyond the caravan.
“how brave is the wren came into our school during Book Week and what a magical experience it was! The children were enchanted by the caravan and loved being read to by a special guest. Our theme was traditional tales and Jenny hand picked some wonderful books for us to keep...truly wonderful!” Mrs H. Bassral Hall Green Infant & Nursery School
