A Spooky Mood
A Family-infused Approach To Halloween Decorating
written by Christina KatzHalloween is the perfect time to crank up the playfulness in your décor. Using the method below, you can find the place where the fear factor and your family's unique style intersect. These tips will help you personalize your Halloween décor until you find the appropriate tone and look that will set you apart from everyone else in your neighborhood. You will have so much fun gathering everyone's input, you will probably want to make Halloween decorating a family affair every year.
CONTAIN PROPS
Keep a large bin for Halloween décor and add to it year after year. Our bin is orange, which makes it easy to spot in our storage area. Pull your bin out in early September, at the latest, to see what you need to restock. Halloween supplies go on sale in late August, so you will have plenty of time to find what you need. If you have a Halloween wreath, use a separate wreath storage container, since most wreaths don't fit into storage boxes. Make a list of everything in your box, so you can fill in the gaps as you shop, instead of starting from scratch. Do any items need fresh bulbs or batteries? Before you shop for fresh materials, consider your current habits.
Shopping Habits
• Organic/Natural
• Crafty/Inspired
• Contemporary/Current
• Used/Vintage
IDENTIFY YOUR STYLES
Since you are the person in charge of all of this decorating, ask yourself some pointed questions about the looks you love. Chances are good your home already has an overall décor style, and you will certainly honor that. But Halloween is also an opportunity to introduce something new or even try a fresh style. Here are some words that might describe your décor style. Combine looks
for an even more unique style. What words describe your home best now? What look are you going for with your décor this year?
Decor Directions
• Antique
• Historical
• Country
• Eclectic
• Classic
• Modern
• Victorian
• Urban
• Techno
• Retro
• Vintage
• Primitive
• Antiquated
GATHER YOUR GHOULS
Have a family meeting in early September so everyone can get on the same page as far as Halloween décor goes. You may not think your son's love of zombies and your daughter's fondness for black cats would go with your husband's crow fetish and your proclivity for carved pumpkins, but you never know until you put them all together. Make new discoveries about each other by combining seemingly clashing icons into your unique Halloween look. Here is your chance to go as understated or over-the-top as you like with your look. So what's it going to be this year? The repetition of a single icon or a mash-up of everyone's favorites?
Halloween Icons
• Pumpkins
• Gourds
• Witches
• Ghosts
• Skulls
• Skeletons
• Bats
• Cats
• Rats
• Crows
• Graves
• Zombies
• Spiders
• Caldron
• Daggers
• Pirates
• Candy Corn
• Masks
• Skeleton Keys
• Gargoyles
• Mummies
• Wizards
• Aliens
LIGHT THE NIGHT
The sun is setting earlier and the nights are getting cooler, so why not warm up your home with Halloween lighting? You can go creepy, outlandish or classic. I go for a fairly vintage Halloween look, so I usually opt for white lights, but let your choices suit your family vibe. If you like flashing purple neon, Halloween is your chance to rock it. Don't be afraid to let your family freak flag fly! Here are some possible color schemes you might choose. Select lights that will accentuate the colors you choose.
Color Schemes
• Orange & Black
• Silver/Black/Red
• Orange/Green/Purple
• Orange/Black/Green
• Purple/Orange/Black
• Red/Orange/Black
• Black & White
• Black/White/Purple/Green/ Orange
• Black/White/Silver
ADJUST THE FRIGHT FACTOR
If you have very young children, you probably won't go for an attack of the zombies theme this year. But you might align some of your decorating choices with family-friendly films or kiddie cartoons to create recognition and familiarity. I've created a spookiness spectrum below. What's right for your family this year? Be realistic. You can always up the fright factor in future celebrations.
Spookiness Spectrum
• Adorable
• Cartoony
• Mystical
• Bewitching
• Gross
• Goth
• Spooky
• Scary
• Macabre
• Terrifying
MOVIE INSPIRATION
Still feeling stumped about how to bring just the right amount of magic and mystery into your Halloween décor? Look to favorite films for inspiration, and don't be afraid to go your own way. If you want to have a Breakfast At Tiffany's or a Toy Story Halloween, go for it!
Frightening Films
Tim Burton: Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Alice In Wonderland
Alfred Hitchcock: The Birds, Psycho
Steven Speilberg: ET, Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Arc, Close Encounters, AI
Series Movies: Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars
Classics: The Wizard Of Oz, Meet Me In St. Louis, Gone With The Wind
Horror Classics: Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Mummy
Round-up Of Villans From Age-appropriate Films: For example, Ursula, Cruella & The Evil Queen STORY LOCATION
Tell a story with your décor. Consider indoor and outdoor settings. You can either leave the outdoors out of doors or bring it in. The interior of your home could evoke a cemetery or the woods. Or continue a location theme from the front yard right into your home. Of course, you can take any location you can come up with and make it haunted. Consider the following possible settings.
Haunted Settings
• Ruins
• Haunted House
• Castle
• Graveyard
• Burial Vault
• Mortuary
• The Woods
• Cornfield
• Barn

FINISHING TOUCHES
If you want to take a fresh approach to Halloween décor, why not choose a theme the whole family loves and weave it through your entire look? Here's an example using a Shakespeare theme, which might work well for families with teenage children. This is also a good example of a theme that can benefit from everyone's creative ideas.
Example Theme:
Shakespearean

Film Inspirations:
1948 version of Hamlet and Tim Burton films
Haunted Setting: A Theater
Inspired Details:
• Silhouettes of Shakespearean characters dying in each front window
• Word art of Shakespearean phrases like "Oh happy dagger!" and "Et tu, Brute!"
• Banner with Shakespeare silhouette with arrow through head on each flag
• Pillows with the names of Shakespeare tragedies, possibly vintage book cover images on iron-on fabric pressed onto pillow covers
• Tree with origami ornaments made from pages of Shakespearean text
• Wreath made of tiny toy swords, daggers, cauldrons, skulls, and bottles of poison
• Framed black and white print-outs of famous actors playing death scenes from film versions of the plays
You don't have to have an overall theme; you can always do a mash-up. But sometimes having a theme can tie together the whole look. And you can probably change the theme year after year and still draw upon the supplies you have on hand.
Now it's your turn!
Don't be afraid to think outside the coffin. There are no rules when it comes to coming up with colorful, creative and collaborative Halloween inspirations. Create your own worksheet to determine the most refreshing direction for your Halloween décor this year.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN
31
IDEAS FOR FALL FUN
written by Janeen LewisFall wouldn’t be complete without that family trip to pick the perfect pumpkin. Then let the Jacko’-lantern carving, seed roasting, and pie baking begin! But what else can you do with pumpkins? Pumpkin bowling, anyone? What about tasting pumpkin cheesecake? Kids will enjoy building character pumpkins or making a messy oozing pumpkin. Whether hosting a fall bash or spending time with the family, here are 31 ways to celebrate America’s favorite gourd.
Carved Pumpkin Ideas
Nothing says fall like a litup jack-o’-lantern. Carve a traditional pumpkin, or if you want to try something new this year, here are some ideas:
• Create a fun oozing pumpkin and watch foam erupt from its carved mouth and eyes. Check out Steve Spangler’s website to make one. Oozing Pumpkin - Steve Spangler
• Not sure about your design and carving skills? Try a pattern and stencil. Most groceries and department stores carry inexpensive stencil and carving kits.
• Hammer metal cookie cutters into a hollow pumpkin and then pop out the shapes to make your own unique design.
• Instead of a candle, put a glow stick in your carved pumpkin for an eerie, neon effect.
No-carve pumpkin Ideas
If you want your pumpkin to last through the season or you don’t want to deal with the mess of carving a pumpkin, there are plenty of fun no-carve options.
• Make a nail art pumpkin. Draw a design on your pumpkin then hammer nails into the design.
• Either leave the nails as is, or decorate with thread and make a string art pumpkin.
• Create pumpkin people that represent favorite book or movie characters. For example, one big pumpkin and two small gourds on the side could be Princess Leia, or paint a pumpkin green to make Yoda. Pinterest has so many examples.
• Are you a sports lover?
Paint a baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer ball or softball pumpkin.
• Trim the stem and paint on animal faces.
• Leave the stem, add white paint and glitter. Poof! The pumpkin becomes a unicorn.
Pumpkin Play
Creative pumpkin games make any get together or party a blast. Try one of these or convert a favorite game into pumpkin play.
• Bowl with pumpkins. Set up pins in the grass. Use small lightweight pumpkins without stems as pumpkin bowling balls. See who can knock down the most pins.
• Play pumpkin putt-putt. Use pumpkins to make an obstacle course. With miniature golf clubs, putt around the pumpkins, or make one big pumpkin that has a wide-open mouth to putt into. Make the game even more challenging by using a tiny pumpkin as the golf ball.
• Jump, slide, or go diagonal with pumpkins and play pumpkin checkers. Use a large checker mat or table or use small pumpkins and use a traditional board. Use white pumpkins as checkers on one side and orange ones on the other.
• Take turns playing pumpkin tic-tac-toe. Mark off a tic-tac-toe grid on the lawn, use chalk on the sidewalk, or use a mat and play tictac-toe with pumpkins.
Creative Containers
For your next party or family get together, try some of these unique containers for your tablescape.
• Serve soup in pumpkin bowls. Go with a traditional family favorite
or in honor of fall, make pumpkin or squash soup. Use the top as a lid to keep the soup warm.
• Light up the room with pumpkin candle holders. Use mini pumpkins for candlesticks and bigger pumpkins for jar candles.
• Fill a large, hollow pumpkin with ice and use as an ice bucket.
• Tap a hollow pumpkin with a nozzle, and turn it into a drink dispenser.
Dazzle with Décor
Get creative inside and outside with these pumpkin decorations.
• Make a festive vase. Scoop the insides out, fill the pumpkin with floral foam and stick faux or real flowers in the foam.
• Dress up the fireplace mantel. Use painted pumpkins and bows, or write letters on several little pumpkins to make words such as “gather” or “happy fall.”
• Use mini pumpkins as place holders for a fall dinner. Use a toothpick or cardholder with a sharp end and stick it in the pumpkin. Attach a name card.
• Make a pumpkin topiary for inside or outside.
• Layer pumpkins from top to bottom on porch steps.
Spruce up the garden
Keep the garden alive during fall with these ideas:
• Make an outdoor pumpkin planter. Hollow out a pumpkin and fill with soil and hardy flowers like mums or pansies.
• Feed the birds! Fill a pumpkin with seeds and leave it in the yard.
• Make garden compost. Cut a leftover pumpkin into small pieces, or better yet, let the kids have a
blast by smashing a rotting pumpkin into tiny pieces. Pitch the pieces in the compost pile or scatter the pumpkin pieces over soil, cover with leaves and let nature take it from there.
• Next year grow a pumpkin from this year’s seeds. Rinse seeds, spread out, and let dry for several weeks. Store them in an envelope in a dry, cool place to plant next year.
Pumpkin Delicacies
Trail mix, cocktails and, cheesecake, oh my! These ideas go beyond mere pie.
• Roast sweet and salty pumpkin seeds by adding brown sugar and sea salt. You can also roast seeds with olive oil and your favorite herbal seasoning, or choose from cinnamon, ginger, garlic salt, seasoning salt, pepper or grated cheese. Experiment to find your favorite flavor.
• Create your own fall trail mix. Sprinkle roasted pumpkin seeds in granola and throw in some other favorite ingredients like raisins or nuts.
• Bake a traditional pumpkin pie.
• Pumpkin pie isn’t your thing? Try one of its cousins: pumpkin bread, cheesecake or cookies. Make pumpkin butter, hummus, or smoothies with pumpkin flesh. Allrecipes. com has many recipes for all foods pumpkin.
• Did you know you can make pumpkin cocktails? For recipes for cocktails or non-alcoholic pumpkin drinks, check out The Spruce Eats at thespruceats.com.

MIDDLE GROUND BETWEEN
Helicopter & Neglectful Parenting
written by Christina KatzReports in the media about helicopter parents have been skyrocketing over the past decade. The consensus from college counselors and entry-level employers is that parents are going too far making sure their kids get ahead in high school, college and beyond. Instead of being helpful, parents are hovering. Rather than supporting tweens and teens, parents are swooping in and negotiating outcomes for them. But when kids don't learn to trust their ability to navigate their own experiences, they become more helpless, which leads to shirking responsibilities and assuming mom and dad will pick up the slack on their behalf.
On the opposite end of the parenting spectrum is a type of parent who is not discussed as much in the media as the helicopter parent-the absentee parent. These parents are too busy, distracted and preoccupied to meet the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of their children. Absentee parents may be physically present but struggle to pay enough attention to their children for many reasons, which may include job demands, marital distress, divorce, addiction, mental illness, financial problems, domestic violence or unhealed wounds from childhood. As the name implies, absentee parents may either be elsewhere permanently or frequently away from home.
Despite suggestions in the media that parents should back off, checking out is not the antidote to helicopter parenting. Kids need parents to be present, engaged and involved in their lives. In the middle of the two parenting
extremes, helicopter and absentee, is the happy medium kids crave-the present, self-aware parent who possess healthy boundaries and wants children to learn them, too. Helpful parents practice benign neglect, where they step out of the way on purpose to give a child chances to stretch and grow.
Most parents want the best for their kids and are doing as well as they can, but helpful parenting skills may require a little extra study and practice because they are not always instinctive. Let's take a closer look at the qualities of helpful parents.
Available to listen.
Kids don't always need parents to fix everything for them. More often, they just need to be listened to and heard. Parents are older and wiser and will usually be able to discern solutions to problems more swiftly than kids. But if parents
always assert their advantage in problem solving, kids won't get the opportunity to figure things out for themselves. The solution is to listen to kids and ask questions. Help your child discover that she has good instincts and can use your family values to deduct possible solutions to challenging situations.
Emotionally detached.
Above all, parents need to refrain from swooping in and taking over whenever a problem presents itself. The more parents intervene, the more they deprive kids of valuable learning experiences. I have just as strong a mama bear instincts as the next mom, and if I perceive that my daughter is being treated poorly, my blood pressure can surge. The instinct to protect is a natural one and must be regulated. The more often you react emotionally to information your child shares, the less likely your kids will
want to share with you in the future. So get in the habit of saying things like, "I am sorry to hear that you were treated that way. How did that make you feel?" It's helpful for kids to be able to name and own their feelings, and this can buy you a bit of time to calm down.
Willing to discuss.
Sometimes, when you are talking to your kids about challenging situations in their lives, they may ask you if you had a similar experience when you were their age. If you are the kind of parent who can come up with personal anecdotes on the fly, your kids will appreciate knowing they are not the only ones to struggle. If like me, you are not as quick to scan your memory files and come up with a relatable story, that's okay, too. Even if you think of something two hours after the conversation is over, chime in the next time the opportunity
arises. Our children need to see us as the fallible people we were and not just as the all-knowing adults we seem to have become. Let your kids connect to a younger, less savvy version of you and you'll feel more connected.
Prepared to help.
Once you are done listening and discussing a situation with a degree of emotional detachment, it may be time to offer assistance. But if your child rebuffs your offer, try not to take it personally. The key is to communicate that your door is always open. "Just let me know if you want to talk about this more," is a good way to let kids know that help is available if they decide they want it. Or you can simply ask, "Do you want to discuss this with anyone else or do some research on the topic?" Don't be afraid to bring more people into the discussion. You might say, "You know who might have some insights on this topic? Dad." Pushing for immediate solutions may make kids feel more anxious. You don't have to have all of the
answers, every time. Children need to process information in their own way and at their own pace.
Supportive from the back seat.
Kids need to learn how to advocate for themselves and parents can assist with this process without taking over. At the end of my daughter's first year of middle school, she wanted to try out for the talent show. She had sung a song in the elementary school talent show and the experience had been empowering. So when she auditioned in middle school and didn't make the cut, she was disappointed, but trying hard to pretend she wasn't. I encouraged her to go speak to her choir teacher about it. "Why not ask her what you might do differently next time?" I suggested. My daughter said she would talk to her, and then dragged her feet, while continuing to feel badly. After a few days, I sent the teacher a quick email asking her to initiate a conversation, which she did. As my daughter relayed
finding the helpful middle
their discussion to me in the car after school, she burst into tears, finally releasing the sadness underneath the disappointment. The next year, she picked a more upbeat song, and happily made the cut.
Conscious of boundaries.
Sometimes it's hard for parents to relinquish control when they can envision a perfect future for their kids. But their vision may interfere with their teen's ability to imagine a life they are excited to lead. The goal of helpful parenting is healthy boundaries. You are not your child and your child is not you. If you don't have appropriate limits as a parent, you won't be able to model them for your child. Parents who habitually overstep teach their kids that their own opinions are not important. Cultivating solid boundaries are everything when it comes to raising kids who can think and act for themselves. Kids with poor boundaries will likely have difficulty forming and maintaining healthy
relationships in the future. See the sidebar for recommended reading on positive parenting with healthy boundaries.
Accessible in a crisis.
If you want to be the first person your child calls in a genuine crisis, you have to earn that role by being cool, calm and considerate in the face of whatever goes down. If your kids don't believe you can hold it together, they will look elsewhere for help. If you are not your child's go-to person in a crisis, don't be mad at them. Look at your parenting history, and consider what adjustments you need to make to become a caring, supportive space for your children. Make sure your children know you are not perfect, and remember they are not perfect, either. When you let your kids be imperfect, you encourage them to take risks, make mistakes, and figure things out as they mature, just like you.
When you are a parent, your actions or lack of actions, speak louder than your words. Which of these columns best describe your attitude as a parent? Helicopter, helpful or absentee?

Start Them Young
WHY LEARNING ANOTHER LANGUAGE IS GOOD FOR YOUR CHILD
written by Rebecca HastingsYou don’t need to wait until your child has a class in school to teach them another language. While you can wait for the school programs to incorporate language, there are numerous benefits to teaching your child at home from an early age.
With greater connections between cultures, learning languages from an early age is a benefit. Jovi Olson, Chief of Communications & Institutional Equity at Silicon Valley International School explains, “In an increasingly interconnected world, having cultural agility is vital. A bilingual education also provides children with the ability to think critically from multiple perspectives. Learning another language and culture provides that.”
While we may be able to recognize the benefits of learning languages, it can be hard to decide if you want to incorporate them into your child’s learning, especially if you do not know other languages yourself. Let’s look at some common questions regarding learning another language for kids.
CAN I JUST WAIT FOR THEM TO LEARN A LANGUAGE IN SCHOOL?
It is wonderful to see schools embracing language
education, especially in the preschool and elementary years. Research shows that children who learn a language before their teen years are more likely to achieve native pronunciation, especially if they are taught by native speakers. It is also believed that it is easier for children to learn a language at a young age. This confirms the benefits of offering language learning as early as possible.
HOW OLD SHOULD MY CHILD BE TO LEARN A LANGUAGE?
According to Daniela Ruelas, M.A. and Silvia Piedrasanta of KSS Immersion Schools, “The best age to start learning a second language is as soon as a child is born. Children’s brains are developing so much during the first three years of life. The more neural connections they can make during these early years, the better. The more exposure children have to language at an early age, the more vocabulary they will have later on, and the better their language skills will be.”
You can begin introducing multiple languages to your child from the time they are born. Even if you are not a bilingual household, you can incorporate resources, toys, and people that
expose your child to other languages. As they develop, learning to talk and read, they can learn multiple languages simultaneously.
If you haven’t started at birth, that’s okay. “Studies have shown that young children’s brains are particularly receptive to language learning. Exposure to a second language at an early age can help wire the brain for language acquisition and lead to better long-term language proficiency,” shares Que Yi, Co-Head of School at Shu Ren International School/ An IB World School. There is no wrong age to learn another language. You can start today and your child will reap the benefits.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN?
The best way to learn a foreign language is through an in-person bilingual program taught by native speakers. This will maximize learning in an authentic way for your child. If an in-person program is not an option, consider tutors, computer programs, and online lessons that are as interactive as possible. It is best if these are led by native speakers to ensure your child learns proper pronunciation.
DO I NEED TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE?
Parents often dismiss language education if they don’t know
another language. It is not, however, a requirement for parents to know the language their child is learning. It can be helpful, but it is not necessary. You can also use the opportunity to learn the language alongside your child and incorporate the learning into your family life.
REMEMBER, IT IS A PROCESS
As you explore language learning for your child, embrace the process. Whether you start small with a book or game, you commit to more with a weekly program, or you begin an immersive inperson program, your child will benefit from learning another language.
Consider your options and look for a program or strategies that work for your family. The most important thing is to start.
“Knowing another language builds empathy and understanding for another person, their culture, and their values,” Deron Marvin, Co-Head of School at Shu Ren International School/ An IB World School shares. “There are two things kids should learn in their formative years: an additional language, and a musical instrument. Start early!”
It can be hard to know when your child should be introduced to a new language. Some people wait for classes offered in elementary, middle or high school. Increasingly, however, we see the benefits of starting language learning young.

HALLOWEEN FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY IN GALVESTON!
get spooky at the bryan museum!
The Bryan Museum in Galveston is known for hosting Halloween Spooktacular each year! This free community event invites kids to visit the museum for two hours of games, educational activities and of course, candy! Families love everything the event has to offer, including candy stations, a costume parade, yard games, a food truck, spooky stories, fall crafts, themed photo spaces, and a ghost hunt.
As we all approach the holiday season, we are reminded of the importance of community events and the opportunities that they create for families to bond and build social skills by interacting with friends and strangers. The celebration of Halloween draws a true cross-section of the greater Galveston and Houston community who all share a love of spooky makebelieve. The picture of the “Addams Family” with their
dog - “Cousin It” - is a prime example. This creatively dressed family spent much of their time posing for pictures for other attendees who stopped them to chat about their magnificent costumes. The Bryan Museum’s Halloween events are no exception. Kids are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite super hero or fantasy costume!
Community events also provide new experiences for the whole family. The Halloween craft table continues to be a favorite sensory experience for young visitors each year. Children love getting to create clay spider and monsters. This free spooky event will take place on the grounds of The Bryan Museum on Sunday, October 29 from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Children also receive free admission into the Museum all day.

RHONA AND BRUCE CARESS GALLERY - AND STILL I WRITE: YOUNG DIARISTS ON WAR AND GENOCIDE
In Nazi Europe, Jewish teenagers wrote in worn notebooks. Far away in America, young people in Japanese internment camps did the same. Decades later, it was children in war-time Sarajevo. EXHIBITS: THE ICONIC PORTRAIT STRAND BY NESTOR TOPCHY
This exhibition presents more than one hundred portraits made over the past twenty years by Houston-based artist Nestor Topchy (b. 1963). The small
paintings, with their gold backgrounds, resemble Byzantine icons; however, rather than representing religious figures, Topchy depicts friends and colleagues in the art community. His materials are traditional, and he applies red clay, powdered marble, gold leaf, pure pigments, and egg yolk on small wooden panels. The artist has explained that his approach connects the past to the present and lends a unique effect to his contemporary subjects: “To paint a mortal in the sea of gold light, alone—is to propose a saintliness that dwells within all people.”

WALL DRAWING SERIES: MARC BAUER
Swiss artist Marc Bauer (b. 1975) has been commissioned to create the fifth installment of the ephemeral wall drawing series at the Menil Drawing Institute. Bauer’s art practice is based in his careful examination of how images circulate in print and online media platforms. Bauer uses drawing to reconfigure found images—from sources ranging from personal family albums to cable news streams— with the goal of ultimately shaping a prismatic view of history, culture, and politics. He likens this process to a kind of witnessing, a deliberate and deeply personal way of seeing and understanding the world.

MAX ADRIAN: RIPSTOP
Max Adrian: RIPSTOP is a solo exhibition of patchwork textiles and inflatable sculptures by the Ohio-based fiber artist. Adrian’s volumetric, pneumatic work transports viewers into a realm of artifice, desire, and worldbuilding. Drawing from rich legacies of queer fiber art and theory, including the AIDS memorial quilt and José Esteban Muñoz’s foundational text, Cruising Utopia, the exhibition features monumentally scaled works that physically respond to the presence of viewers by filling with air.
“The sculptures’ constant state of performing, or becoming, reflects Adrian’s interests in queerness as an inherently utopian and future-oriented mode of being,” says Sarah Darro, Curator and Exhibitions Director at HCCC.

TREE OF LIFE
Tree of Life showcases sculptural objects made from the African blackwood tree, also known as mpingo or Dalbergia melanoxylon. Native to Tanzania and the territory surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro, this tree has a naturally dark, nearly black, colored core and other unique properties that make it a preferred choice of material for ornamental turning, carving, and use in woodwind instruments. This exhibition features figural sculptures carved in the Makonde tradition by Tanzania-based artists, Joseph Singombe and Pius Mtembe; ornamental turning by the late Texas-based artist James Harris; and woodwind instruments that explore the different methods artists are using when approaching this material.
