Stunning Seasonal Makeovers
The expert team at Evergreen Pros helps homeowners embrace autumn and enjoy their outdoor living space further into the season.
Fall is the perfect time to gather with friends and family as the cooler temperatures are a welcomed reprieve from the scorching summer months. As the fall foliage begins to take shape, it’s also the right time to transform your outdoor living areas into seasonallyappropriate masterpieces.
Locally, Evergreen Pros is an industry leader thanks to its years of expertise and innovation. The company’s highly skilled team of expert landscapers and designers keep up on the latest trends and techniques, ensuring clients their living spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also fully functional. What’s more, Evergreen Pros does not take a one-size-fits-all approach, making sure each individual client’s needs and desires are the focal point of every project.
“Our goal is to make every outdoor space a reflection of our client’s vision while meeting any unique needs and preferences,” says Nick Erman, president. “No one wants to call multiple contractors to complete a project, so we make sure to provide everything from large-scale endeavors like the installation of irrigation and pavers to building an entire pool and outdoor kitchen, to the smaller details like landscaping and fencing.”
Evergreen Pros also takes pride in being comprehensive backyard specialists that are heavily involved every step of the way, from the initial design concept to the final site cleanup. That attention to detail shines through, allowing them to not only meet client expectations, but exceed them.
“When it comes time to conceptualize a project, we use SketchUp, a 3D modeling software that allows our design team to create and manipulate designs of pools, outdoor kitchens, paver patios and many other types of projects,” shares Erman. “This sort of tool really helps align our client’s vision with what is obtainable and helps the process to have clear expectations.”
Development and Education
Continuing education is a big part of what makes Evergreen Pros successful as it allows the team to update their knowledge, enhance their skills and be up to date on the latest safety standards.
“We’re very much up on today’s building techniques with installing pavers, pools and porcelain, all the way to building fireplaces, fire pits and everything else. That continuing education for our workers makes sure they’re at today’s level with their
installation techniques,” says Erman.
Evergreen Pros specializes in using products from top brands like Cambridge, Techo-Bloc and Belgard pavers, as well as the International Porcelain Company, the latter of which is really revolutionizing the outdoor design area with their blend of durability and sophistication.
“They’re crafted from dense, highquality porcelain and offer an exceptional level of resistance to weathering, staining and heavy foot traffic, making them an ideal choice for patios, walkways and driveways,” says Erman.
Embracing the Seasonal Shift
As the temperatures cool and you look to maximize your time spent outdoors, some of the more popular ways to transform your yard into a cozy retreat includes addition of comfortable seating, warm blankets and a fire pit for evenings spent under the stars.
“Fire pits are a great addition to your outdoor space, especially during the fall. And of course, outdoor kitchens are always a favorite, from season to season, but the appeal of having more usable outdoor entertaining space during the holiday months is a big draw for a lot of homeowners,” Erman says.
Incorporating seasonal elements like pumpkins, cabbage and mums to enhance the fall atmosphere, while considering adding soft outdoor lighting can help extend the enjoyment of your space into the early evenings. Whether you’re hosting a harvest gathering or simply savoring a quiet moment with a hot beverage, your outdoor area can become a delightful extension of your home, reflecting the rich colors and serene mood of the season.
Transforming Spaces, One Yard at a Time
No matter if you are looking to boost your home’s curb appeal, create a welcoming environment for a commercial property or create the perfect outdoor oasis to escape from the daily grind, Evergreen Pros brings the perfect blend of creativity, expertise and the utmost professionalism to every project.
“We know that when people hire us, they are trusting us to deliver more than a completed project, they are trusting us to deliver a dream,” Erman states. “We strive for that wow factor on every job we complete. If our customers aren’t happy, we are not happy.”

Expert Spotlight:
HADDON FLOORING
How did your company get started in the flooring industry?
Sort of by accident actually. I’ve been a real estate investor and developer for almost 25 years now, and I’ve done over 100,000 square feet of my own flooring. I have amazing installers, and when I see a floor that wasn’t done right, or has soft spots when you walk on it, I cringe. The world deserves better quality floor installation.
What inspired you to focus on flooring specifically?
I love the look of new luxury flooring in a home. And I know firsthand that great flooring in a rental property can significantly increase the rent, and in many cases generate the landlord a 60%-plus annual return on the investment in those new floors. But we don’t just do flooring. We also specialize in custom wainscoting accent walls and other trim projects, coffered ceilings and luxury custom decks.
What separates you from other flooring companies?
Our attention to detail and quality of installation. We’re a local company that is fast, reliable and in most cases significantly more affordable than some of the larger chains.
What type of experience does your customer have from beginning to end?
We offer free estimates and in-home design
consultations. They can choose from great products that we recommend or go right into any Floor & Decor, Home Depot or Lowes and pick their flooring—we have partnerships with all of those companies. We have fast turnaround installations to minimize any down time in their home and provide beautiful new living spaces for them to enjoy for years to come.
Are there any current flooring trends homeowners or businesses are asking for most?
Light colors have been trending for a while now, but we’re starting to see some more medium shades more frequently. In general I think a great earth tone does not go out of style. I never really personally loved the grey trend a few years back. It didn’t seem natural, and a little too dull.
How do you stay ahead of new technology or design in the industry?
Our entire staff does ongoing trainings on all of the best products in the industry, and cutting-edge applications of those products. One in particular that we are a preferred installer for is Bison Decking. They have this amazing deck product for backyards, roof decks and more that looks really sharp. Check out our Instagram page for some pictures of it @haddonflooring.
Do provide both residential and commercial services?
Yes, at the moment, we’re about 60% residential and 40% commercial, but it goes up and down. We are happy to work with either as the jobs come in. We have a big commercial project coming up that will keep one of our crews busy for a little while.
What’s the most durable flooring option you recommend for families with kids or pets?
Luxury vinyl planks are somewhat indestructible. I love a good natural hardwood, but it may not be the best fit for all areas, such as when you have your living room flooring continue right into the kitchen. I have luxury vinyl in my house, and my three crazy kids put it to the test for sure. It still looks great.
How do you help customers choose the right floor for their needs?
The look and style is personal, and we work with them to choose it, but ultimately it’s what makes them happy. Once we have the look worked out, the specific product is determined by its location. Basements, for example, can be damp, and we suggest a specific product for that application. Same for kitchens where water can sit on the floor around the sink on occasion.
Voted Best for Landscape Design 15 Years In a Row
We Love What WeDo’
industry leader in South Jersey for almost 35 years, Gill’s Landscaping has worked hard to build a reputation as the region’s consummate full-service residential and commercial landscaping company, known for its stunning transformations of outdoor spaces.
Offering unique designs for outdoor kitchens, paver patios, driveways, walkways, water features and landscape lighting, it’s no wonder Gill’s has been voted Best Landscaping Company by both South Jersey Magazine and House & Home magazine from 2011 to 2023.
Among the company’s many standout qualities is that it does not subcontract work.
“From start to finish, from design to the completed project, our team is 100% all Gill’s,” owner Brian Gill proudly states.
With a customer-oriented design process, Gill’s consistently delivers desired results for its many clients. Using both 3D and traditional blueprints, home-
The team at Gill’s Landscaping has a passion for ensuring that every project delivers not only unmatched quality but also an undeniable “Wow!” factor.
owners can easily visualize how their project will look before the work begins.
“We have an experienced team of experts who come to your property and collaborate to combine ideas,” says Gill. “Our design software is adaptable to all budgets, so you know exactly what the project will cost at the outset.”
Landscaping is a dynamic undertaking, which a good landscaper knows— and the Gill’s team will help any client adjust accordingly where needed. They have the professional experience and customer-service drive to know that asking some important questions before a project begins can save a homeowner both time and money, like: Is your yard designed for longevity? Does your patio fit the aesthetic of its surrounding landscape? Could your irrigation system be more efficient in its water usage?
Uniqueness of design is another significant factor in all projects with the Gill’s name on them, with aesthetic experts suggesting ideas that complement each homeowner’s distinctive space and style.
“It’s also important that our customers are never left out of the process of their project,” Gill adds. “Collaboration with the homeowner is key.”
Another important aspect of any project is the materials used. Gill’s ensures that they use only the highest quality products, no matter what the job entails.
“We pride ourselves on educating clients about what’s out there and guide them on what would work best for their particular project so it will look spectacular for many years to come,” explains Gill. “We treat every home like it’s our own.”
Gill attributes much of the company’s success to hard work and determination, with an emphasis on commitment and dedication from its team.
“For any business to succeed, you need to surround yourself with good people. My staff is the backbone of the company, and customers always have good things to say about them,” he says. “I truly appreciate everything they bring to the business.”
Gill himself is personally involved with every project, checking on progress along the way and giving final approval at the end. As he’s quick to affirm, “We love what we do.”
From the initial contact to a project’s completion, homeowners and commercial clients will not find a more passionate, detail-oriented company that produces the most incredible results—exceeding the expectations of all.

WDel Val Pools & Spas
ITH THE 2025 SUMMER SEASON COMING TO AN END, MANY HOMEOWNERS MAY BE WONDERING WHAT STEPS THEY SHOULD BE TAKING IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE LOUNGING POOLSIDE NEXT YEAR. BRYAN HULL, CO-OWNER OF DEL VAL POOLS & SPAS SAYS THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW, AS MANY COMPANIES ARE ALREADY DEEP INTO PLANNING FOR THE 2026 SEASON.
“There’s a great expression that can also apply to pool building and that is ‘If you’re not early, you’re late,” he says. “For those who want a pool for next summer, the best thing to do right now is to meet with one of our sales representatives, confirm a design and sign a contract.”
By starting the process now, you are able to lock in a date as the calendar can fill up quickly. “Almost everyone will tell us they want their new pool to be completed by the end of May next year. Winter ends on March 22, so expectations must be met inside a fairly small window,” Hull says. We spoke further to Hull about the process and what changes he is noticing taking place across the industry.
Bryan Hull, co-owner
HOW DO YOU SEE 2026 DIFFERING FROM 2025?
The economy is uncertain. Tariffs going into 2026 are definitely a concern. It’s a turbulent time, and costs are going up on everything from coffee to the pumps which run your pool.
The third generation of the Hull family is active in the business, and our customers benefit from this experience. We’ve learned over the decades we can protect our customers from price gyrations by keeping several years inventory on hand and buying in bulk. This way we average our costs and our customers’ costs. We have also strengthened our relationships with multiple
finance companies going into 2026 to make this aspect of building a pool easier for our customers. We hope to see interest rates go down, but the most important thing is for our customers to have options, and we have strived to expand the financing options for next year.
WHAT CHANGES DO YOU SEE MOST IN POOL DESIGN?
Our specialty is custom in-ground gunite pools. We take pride in creating a backyard oasis for our clients. Our pool designs are driven by the customer’s vision, the shape and topography of the backyard, and how the pool is to be used. In terms of design changes, the pools are bigger. You never hear someone say they wish they had built a smaller pool. I feel we are seeing a return to
traditional shapes—meaning more right angles and less curves, but that also depends on the architecture of the house. We want our pools to complement the style of the house and be the focal point of the yard. I’ve been doing this a long time, and my favorite part of the business is listening to a client’s dream and then bringing it to life. Designs are driven by the client’s goals, and the advancing technology in lighting and moving water really give new pools a “wow” factor.
THREE GENERATIONS IS QUITE
THE ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR A SMALL BUSINESS. WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
I’m proud to see the third generation taking on management roles. I have always been a competitive person and that transcends into our business ethics and culture. My brother and I want Del Val Pools & Spas to be the best at what we do. We overbuild and overengineer our pools so they last. People know this, and we explain our constructions methods in detail. A few years ago, we invested in our own gunite trucks so we perform every aspect of the pool build ourselves. We do not use subcontractors and we are very proud of this. This allows us to control costs and complete pools on schedule and on budget. We also have three retail locations throughout southern New Jersey which allows us to serve a large area with quick and responsive service. Stop by one of the stores, look around, and ask questions. If you’re lucky, you just might catch the fourth generation of Del Val in the store.
Email me at Bryan@Delvalpools.net or call our office at (856) 629-2999 to schedule an on-site visit.
Creating Cozy Spaces to Make Your House Feel Like Home
For the team at Amiano & Son, the best part of a remodel isn’t just how it looks when it’s done—it’s the life that happens in it afterward. We believe the warmth of a kitchen, the comfort of a gathering space and the memories made inside are what truly define “home.” Every detail we design is with that feeling in mind.
KITCHENRevitalization
With holiday hosting opportunities around the corner, people are opting for
fresh, new ideas.
When picturing a kitchen, it’s typical to think of warmth—whether in terms of family memories made gathering around the table, the heat that radiates from cooking or the homey aesthetic often found in it. In the recent past, popular kitchen designs have consisted of a sleek, minimalist theme best suited for a modern flair. This year, the innovative technology is now incorporated among personalized kitchens with color, character and comfortability.
“In 2024, color made a big comeback. Kitchens moved away from the all-white standard, embracing warmer tones, richer textures and personality-driven design choices. Homeowners began leaning into spaces that felt lived-in and inviting, with layers of color and material adding depth to the overall look,” says Todd Finkenstadt, co-owner of Kitchen Tune-Up Glen Rock. “Now in 2025, this movement has expanded further. One of the biggest shifts has been the surge in natural
wood-grain cabinetry, with white oak leading the way. The warmth and organic feel of oak brings character to the kitchen, balancing modern clean lines with a timeless, natural element.”
He adds that there is a rising demand for built-in dining nooks, which create a cozy, intimate atmosphere and expanded storage. There has been a resurgence of color, unique designs, and wood and quartz materials reminiscent of the kitchens that were trending decades ago. The difference, however, is that there are more customization options today than ever before.
“A few years ago, everyone wanted the bright white kitchen—walls, cabinets, countertops, everything. Now, there’s more balance. Clients want a white or neutral backdrop, but they’re layering in wood textures, stone
By Carly Murray
surfaces with character and color on the lower cabinets or island. It’s a shift from ‘all one look’ to a mix that feels more natural and lived-in,” affirms Takia Livingston, owner of Kitchen Tune-Up Bloomfield.
The shift from clean, contemporary kitchens to creative and customized kitchens is not necessarily one extreme or the other. Homeowners often find a combination of the two, which is perfectly aligned with the idea of making the space individualized.
“Just a few years ago, all-white and minimalist kitchens dominated. Today’s homeowners want more warmth and individuality. Instead of sterile spaces, kitchens are becoming highly personal, layered and textured,” says Jeff Toren, owner of Kitchen Tune-Up Main Line. “Functionality is also driving design— people want more than just a beautiful space;
KITCHENRevitalization
they want storage solutions, flexible layouts and technology that makes everyday life easier.”
If sprucing up a neutral kitchen, experiment with accent materials, colors and pieces to add something new without an overwhelming change.
“Warmer tones and stains are back in [for] arches, doorways and accent pieces: Warmer whites paired with medium-warm stains on either oak or maple, as opposed to stark white; recessed panels for clean lines; varying shades of green/earth tones,” adds Kari Taverna, senior kitchen and bath design consultant at Weiler’s Kitchen and Bath Design Center. “We’re happily out of the gray era, [it’s] been on the downslope to open the door for warmth and color.”
Consistently popular shaker cabinets are an excellent way to start, because they are an essential piece but not the centerpiece of a kitchen.
“For many years, the vast majority of our cabinet sales were white and off-white recessed panel doors styles like a shakerdoor style. Recently, more unusual painted colors like greens and stained finishes have grown in popularity. Some past door styles and finishes like raised-panel door styles and glazed finishes have just started to sell again after 20 years,” says Paul McAlary, president of Main Line Kitchen Design. “There are much more style, color and wood variations than in years past, which is refreshing.”
Whether adding a pop of color among neutrals or all-encompassing color, playing with shaker cabinet aesthetics harmoniously blends modern and classic design.
“Two-tone cabinets—light uppers paired with a deeper base color—are especially popular because they add interest without overwhelming the space. We’re also seeing a lot of requests for functional upgrades, like
pull-out storage, organizers and soft-close hardware. It’s not just about the look anymore—it’s about creating a kitchen that works harder for the family using it every day,” says Livingston.
“Cabinet designs are moving toward two-tone looks and textured finishes, such as fluted or reeded doors, that add subtle character. To complete the look, mixedmetal hardware—like brass with matte black—along with oversized pendant lighting bring a cohesive, modern feel,” adds Toren.
Finkenstadt explains that blues, greens and wood tones have been popular choices for cabinet colors. Color choices can pair with shapes and lines to accentuate and to mimic the desired era of design trends. Sharp lines, simplicity and open space are common attributes of modern designs that work well with any color choice.
“Rich, inviting finishes bring character and comfort to the kitchen. While the classic shaker door continues to be our most popular style, the slim shaker is quickly gaining attention,” continues Finkenstadt. “The slim shaker is a modern twist on the traditional design, featuring slimmer rails and stiles on the border. It’s the perfect middle ground for homeowners torn between the clean simplicity of a flat panel and the timeless appeal of a shaker door. With its subtle detailing, it delivers a fresh, modern look without losing the warmth and versatility people love about shaker cabinetry.
Considering both look and functionality simultaneously is important, especially when it comes to a kitchen. When it comes to choices in flooring, functionality is a bit more important because of the messiness that is characteristic of kitchens. Whether a floor is subject to damage from kids, pets, water or food, luxury vinyl plank remains a strong choice for durability and longevity.
“Luxury vinyl planks are somewhat indestructible. I love a good natural hardwood, but it may not be the best fit for all areas, such as when you have your living room flooring continue right into the kitchen,” explains Rich Lauletta, owner of Haddon Flooring. “I have luxury vinyl in my house, and my three crazy kids put it to the test for sure. It still looks great.”
Luxury vinyl planks are available in a variety of styles and colors, so it’s easy to find one that fits well with a kitchen design now that the utility is covered. Flooring sets the stage, but it is not a focal point like an island or a dining table. Trends in colors have certainly arrived and passed when it comes to flooring, but a traditional color and style best complements the rest of the room.
“Light colors have been trending for a while now, but we’re starting to see some more medium shades more frequently. In general I think a great ‘earth tone’ does not go out of style. I never personally loved the gray trend a few years back, [it] didn’t seem natural, and [was] a little too dull,” says Lauletta.
After all, with innovation taking over every aspect of everyday life as well as home design, it’s beneficial to keep some familiar ground. Smart home automation can seem daunting, but it is utilized best in a kitchen— which offers plenty of opportunities for technology integration. This aspect has also been responsible for the shift toward minimalism.
“You walked into an older home years ago, and you saw a whole bank of switches—maybe five were dimmers that are placed for each zone of lighting,” says David Cerami owner of HomeTech Renovations. “The dimmers now could be basically located in a basement closet if you wish, and they are communicated through either a handheld device or a wall-mounted pod that would pop out of a device somewhere, or your phone. So, you can actually turn lights on and off, and adjust them accordingly from your phone or from a central pad.”
He further explains that in a kitchen, different zones of lighting can consist of decorative, above the island, cabinet interior lighting, cove lighting, above the table—and anywhere else that could be integral to the ongoings of a kitchen. Experimenting with the brightness of each section at different times of day can transform the atmosphere.
“Lighting is so important. We do a lot of under-cabinet, in-cabinet lighting, and we’re doing pop-up outlets in the countertops, which is a cool idea, rather than having outlets on the side wall,” says Vic Fiore, president of Magnolia Home Remodeling Group. “Plumbing fixtures have gotten more and
KITCHENRevitalization
more advanced, including touchless, where they come on and off with the wave of a hand.”
Efficiency and ease are the epitome of luxury living, and now menial tasks are replaced with voice-activation and AI assistance. Appliances have undergone the most impactful AI takeover, with devices and mechanisms once unfathomable.
“We find a lot of appliances are smart appliances. Some of these appliances could even monitor contents within a refrigerator,” says Cerami. “A lot of the appliances [we see] have automation built into them, whether they’re temperature probes for baking or cooking, or recipes that are pre-programmed into cooking equipment that will complete the cooking cycle in accordance with that recipe.”
Heightened technology is also a major tool in the planning process, and something that home renovation experts utilize to better give clients the full picture.
“The technology we use to design these spaces has gotten better and better to the point where people can really visualize what the space would look like,” says Fiore.
Planning can be both exciting and tumultuous, but an early start and the help of a professional will go a long way in obtaining a homeowner’s dream kitchen. Any vision can become a reality with the right tools and finances, but there are alternatives available that homeowners might not have known existed.
“People should start working on a kitchen renovation as early as possible. You can always hold off starting the actual renovation as long as you like,” says McAlary. “Once we show them options that they hadn’t considered, it takes much longer for them to make decisions. Almost no one ends up selecting the design that they planned on before working with a good experienced kitchen designer.”
A professional kitchen de-
signer will incorporate a client’s taste with practicality, while seamlessly coordinating all of the pieces together. They can also help problem-solve and determine what a plan is missing.
“Everyone’s different,” says Weiler’s designer Andi Saracco. “Getting a hold of what they really like and dislike about their current space is the best place to start, we want to incorporate what they do like but there might be a dysfunctional corner we have to figure out how to make more practical.”
A kitchen is the heart of the home, and it’s best to exhibit creativity and the personalities within it. Now is the perfect time to assess hosting and entertaining expectations and desires, to begin planning for the kitchen of your dreams in time for next year’s holiday season.

Christmas inNovember
Think November is too early to be thinking about holiday lights?
lights, we label them all and then store them for the customer at our facility.
Not Just a Light Company
Jby Katie Francis
Think again. For one local business, the holiday season began back in August, and it’s in full force until the end of January.
eff Adamiak, the owner of GEM Home Maintenance, began We Hang Holiday Lights with his crew in the fall of 2017 to fill the primary business’s offseason.
“It [holiday lights] sort of fit with our traditional business, window cleaning, power washing, that sort of slows down. And then I just realized how much happier you make people hanging Christmas lights as opposed to cleaning their windows or cleaning the roof or something like that,” Adamiak says. “And I just fell in love with doing it. It became fun. It’s Christmas lights, who doesn’t like Christmas lights?”
Thus, We Hang Holiday Lights was born, and business is booming with the team providing holiday cheer for more customers than ever before.
In its first year, We Hang Holiday Lights served roughly 30 clients. Last year, the team decorated for 560 clients; this year, Adamiak expects to hang lights at more than 750 houses, with hundreds of new and returning customers whose demand for the specialized service is already filling up his team’s schedule.
How It Works
“We try to get as many of our customers installed in October. If you’re a returning customer, we want to get your lights installed in October because it’s safer. There’s no frost on the roof in the morning and the days are longer, so it allows us to get more work done.”
Along with the team’s immaculate decorating and top-notch products, they provide maintenance service all throughout the holiday season.
“Part of the contract is, we maintain everything. Bulb goes out? Give me a call and within 24 to 48 hours, I have somebody out there doing the repairs,” Adamiak says.
Maintenance is guaranteed until Jan. 6, which is when We Hang Holiday Lights begins the process of taking displays down.
“We come to disassemble the
When Adamiak began We Hang Holiday Lights in 2017, he quickly realized the positive impact he was making on his customers. Since then, his team has added a philanthropic facet to the seasonal business, providing lights for families going through tough times and bringing some light to their holiday season.
“We always try to look for as many of those as we can every year,” Adamiak says. “I’d like to do more of those. Those are the most enjoyable jobs ever.”
Only the Best
We Hang Holiday Lights only uses the best lights in the business, or, as Adamiak admirably calls them, “the Bentleys of the holiday light industry.” The company uses C9 lights and customizes the length of the strips to perfectly shape the architecture of each house.
“I can cut these lights to fit any length, any design. … And then, of course we can do bushes and trees and shrubs,” Adamiak says.
All of the lights used by We Hang Holiday Lights are warm LEDs, not to be mistaken for the bright blue that people usually associate with LED lighting. These lights are incredibly illuminating and replicate the look of incandescent lights while using only 10% of the energy.
Adamiak believes that a job worth doing is worth doing right, and his customers certainly get what they pay for. He even compares his team’s quality of work to that of Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row and the iconic displays at Downtown Disney, but better!

significant changes in the industry,” McCool says, “other than the increased popularity of adding more bells and whistles to the pool.”
Swim-Mor Pools & Spas partner and general manager Mike McCool recognizes that there is a lot more that goes into a new pool than there used to be.
“The backyard has transformed over the last 10 years or so away from being just ‘your yard’ and into another room of your home with the same care and detail put into it,” McCool says. “Because of this the design of your pool has become more than just a pool but the focus of the outdoor living room. There is a lot of coordination with creating what a customer’s backyard haven is going to be.”
Fortunately, the family-owned South Jersey business is more than up to the challenge of bringing a customer’s backyard pool vision to life. In its 55 years of business, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas has helped to create thousands of backyard paradises throughout the region.
And what’s more, they make the process as easy as possible for their customers.
“We’re a start-to-finish gunite custom pool company—the design, the build and the service afterward,” McCool says. “We have our own crews that handle the work which helps us control quality and makes the process go smoother.”
There are six designers at Swim-Mor Pools & Spas who can help guide customers on a new pool design. The company’s countless photos and 3D drawings can provide inspiration, and the final design is what best suits the backyard, according to McCool.
“Size, setbacks, elevations. We’re here to help you work through that,” he says.
Finding the right pool
“The first step is to give us a call. From there we’ll set up an appointment to come out to your home,” McCool says. “That way we can see all the aspects of the property. What the contours of the yard are. What the access is like. Even the best location based on where the sun rises and sets.”
The timeline to get started is largely based on the homeowner and how decisive they are, McCool adds. Once everything is confirmed, things move to contract and Swim-Mor Pools & Spas starts working on permits.
“Time is of the essence. Permits can take from two weeks to several months, all depending on the municipality,” McCool says.
Pool popularity
Prior to March 2020, business was strong for Swim-Mor Pools & Spa. That was only boosted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region.
“The pool business was never busier than it was in COVID,” McCool says. “The lockdowns forced people to stay at home and they immediately focused on the backyard.”
Although that business boom has settled down a bit, things are still busy. But pool trends, according to McCool, have held fairly steady.
Hampton-style pools have long been a customer favorite, but equally popular are the freeform designs, which can be customized to fit into any backyard environment.
“Through COVID there have not been many
Natural stone is popular for the coping along the pool’s edge, McCool says, as well as darker finishes in the pool. A majority of Swim-Mor Pools & Spa customers are using a salt sanitation system and automated controls in their new pools, as well as choosing to add water features—waterfalls, fountains, deck jets and plenty more. The company also offers many in- pool fixtures for lounging—bar stools and benches that can tie into your outdoor kitchen or can run inside the pool, along with table areas, sundecks for your lounge chairs and custom fire features. Color LED lighting packages come every pool, too.
The majority of customers also choose elements to lengthen their pool-enjoying season, as heaters and spas. “It will extend your pool season by a few months,” McCool says.
Why Swim-Mor Pools & Spas?
Being a local family-owned independent business makes Swim-Mor Pools & Spas a smart choice for customers, according to McCool.
“We’re not national. We’re not a franchise. And we do not try to sell everything. Our expertise has been building custom gunite pools for 55 years and that’s what we focus on,” he says.
Save for a few aspects that are legally required to be outsourced to independent licensed contractors, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas uses all of their own crews for the pool construction, which McCool says is unique for the pool business.
In addition to building new pools, SwimMor Pools & Spas also specializes in renovating gunite pools. The experienced team can handle everything from your standard renovation of replacing your coping, tile and plaster finish, to adding features such as raised water features, sun decks, and even spas that were not originally built with the pool. McCool says, “Even though your pool may not have originally been built with the more current popular features doesn’t mean that Swim-Mor cannot add them now.”
The 2023 pool season is already underway for the business, which thanks to the mild winter meant they were able to start construction early. Pool openings and service will ramp up from mid-April to Memorial Day.
But, for those looking to add a pool to their backyard this summer, it’s not too late. “We’re still building for this year. We’re still selling for this summer,” McCool says. “But don’t waste time. Get in!”
Embrace the beauty of fall with an outdoor oasis that highlights the vibrancy of the season and provides ample opportunities for relaxation, hosting and beyond.
By Chelsea Valcourt
As the summer heat gives way to sweater weather, school begins again and the holiday season approaches, the desire for an outdoor space to enjoy the autumn season arises. Luckily plenty of options are available—from landscape design to unique and interesting additions and more—to craft the perfect place for fall festivities and holiday hosting.
LET IT GROW
By and far, autumn is famous for its vibrancy. While spring brings along its rainbows; summer its sand-filled days; and winter coats the world in white; fall’s warm palette of reds, oranges and yellows is so majestic, folks travel from around the country to view the foliage of the Northeast. Fortunately, it’s possible to bring that beauty right into your own yard.
“There’s three types of interests when it comes to the fall: leaf color, bark color and berries,” says Richard Cording, Sr., owner of CLC Landscape Design. “[In terms of
leaf color,] one plant that my designers really like is fothergilla. It gets a bottle brush-like flower in the spring, but its leaves turn a very attractive bright yellow or purple in the fall. Then there are barks that can look attractive like a variegated red twig dogwood or coral bark maple. Both of their branches turn a striking red as you go into late fall and usually keep the red for the entire winter. Some viburnums also will look great in the fall [adding in that berry element].”
Fall doesn’t have to be the only season your yard is in full, glorious bloom. Careful
planning and knowledgeable landscapers can help to create a landscape that can maximize the beauty of every season.
“Choose plants with multiple seasons of color,” says Jeremy Martin, owner and designer at Willow Gates Home & Landscape. “Ilex verticillate—also known as winterberry or deciduous holly—drops its leaves in the fall but has a stunning display of berries in red, orange or yellow. They are highly adaptable and can be used in rain gardens. Callycarpa, or beautyberry, has beautiful arching branches with lavender flow-
ers in the summer and lavender berries in the fall.”
“Fothergilla has a fragrant white flower in the spring and fall foliage that ranges from yellow, orange, red or even purple,” he continues. “It’s a wonderful alternative to the commonly used euonymus or burning bush that can be highly invasive.”
While spring has its reputation as the season of life, the best time to plant may actually be the fall. Cooler nights and warmer days allow the plant to grow deep roots before going dormant in the winter. Come spring, the plant is already equipped
with strong roots ready to take on the stress the summer heat brings.
FALL FAVORITES
As the holiday season approaches and the flurry of school activities ramps up, the need for a peaceful retreat becomes as important as ever. The cozy vibes, smells and colors of the fall season certainly lend themselves to this cause, but crafting the perfect outdoor space can go a long way in reducing stress while getting some fresh air.
Swinging seating like a hammock or swing chair can help to provide a weightless
feeling. Birdhouses and hummingbird feeders can help to attract visually interesting birds, promoting a grounding connection with nature. Likewise, the addition of water features brings soothing sounds to your relaxation retreat, mimicking our own interconnectedness with water.
“Any feature that has moving water will provide the soothing sounds of water. This can be anything from a beautiful, cascading waterfall to a simple bubbling rock or fountain,” says George Mihalchick, owner of Ponds by George. “Not only is the sound of water soothing and
relaxing, but to just watch ‘water in motion’ is magical and almost addictive.”
Water features can be incorporated into your backyard design in a myriad of ways. From rustic or modern design to natural koi ponds or bubbling urns, there’s plenty of options for every budget, aesthetic and need.
On the flip side, fire features can add a social element to your backyard area. Tabletop or built in fire pits and outdoor fireplaces can become a great space for friends and family to gather around, having discussions long into the night. Providing both heat and light, fire pits are a great addition to a fall atmosphere and with plenty of options in fuel, material and size they’re ideal for yards of all sizes and budgets. In some cases, fire features can work alongside water features to create a unique and stunning conversation piece.
Fire features don’t stop at fire pits and fireplaces however, as they can also be incorporated in more useful ways such as an outdoor ‘pizza’ oven. These ovens can provide a little extra fun to dinner, paving the way for pizza parties and beyond.
“Pizza ovens are great fun for everyone,” says Chris DeMato, owner and operator of Rock Bottom Landscaping & Fencing. “You can actually cook a lot more than just pizza in those ovens, because the temperatures get extremely hot. They’re also great for cooking steaks, fish and things like that.”
If you’ve had your mind set on more of a larger backyard project, consider an outdoor living room.
Outdoor living rooms complete with seating, a television and more can truly turn your backyard into an extension of your home. This can not only extend the life
of your space beyond the summer months, but open the door for plenty of memory-making moments. Enjoy the fresh air of the season as your fantasy league gathers around to watch football outside, get the family together for game night under the stars or host a wine tasting around the fire.
The first and most important step to this process, according to Cording, is consulting with a knowledgeable, licensed landscape architect.
“We don’t think in terms of specific materials; we create outdoor living spaces. We think about the use of plants, fireplaces, location, how you’re going to access it or view this space from inside your house,” he says. “As landscape architects, we’re taught how to develop a property that harmonizes the client’s wishes with the site and nowadays, what’s become critical is what the town
will allow you to do.”
In the end, your backyard should be a reflection of your own interests. The ‘right’ additions to your backyard all depend on your intentions with the space and creating zones within your yard can help decide upon multiple elements without an overcrowded feeling.
LIGHTING THE WAY
With earlier and earlier sunsets, it can be hard to enjoy the outdoors into the evening hours. The moon’s limited light provides plenty of opportunities for you and your guests to trip over or bump into obstacles. Ample lighting is the key to avoiding such circumstances.
“Tasteful lighting means the party doesn’t end when the sun goes down,” says Martin. “In general, it’s best to keep the fixtures unobtrusive. Never create ‘glare bombs’ where the lights are
shining in your face.”
Uplighting mature trees like Japanese maples, path lighting, undercap lighting in seating and retaining walls, and downlighting trees to create a moonlight effect are just some of the options he suggests to create visual interest and avoid late night tripping hazards while maintaining a nighttime feel.
PREPARING FOR WINTER
As temperatures begin to cool and the winter season approaches, it’s important to take inventory of your yard, making any repairs and performing maintenance now to ensure a healthy, thriving environment come spring.
“A lot of people figure they’ll just wait until the spring to address problem areas, and sometimes that’s not a good idea,” says DeMato. “For example if you have a damaged piece of concrete or a sunken area of pavers
around your pool, icy winter can get under those areas and as the ice forms it creates more problems—continuing to grow into the next section of concrete or pool edge.”
Maintenance extends to landscaping as well, which includes cutting back many perennials and ornamental grasses and taking care of fallen leaves.
“Another big mistake that I’ve seen over the years is that people tend to let leaves set on their lawn throughout the winter season and figure they’ll clean them in the spring,” he continues. “That will definitely result in a lot more damage to your lawn.”
For those with a pond, it’s especially important to address any issues it may have to limit the stress on its living inhabitants throughout the winter.
“Every year [you should] clean the pond of all debris by cutting back all the water
plants and cleaning all the filters and netting the pond to keep the leaves out of it,” says Mihalchick. “The cleaner your pond or water feature is going into the winter, the healthier your fish will be during the winter months as they go dormant and the easier your pond will be to clean in the spring.”
Proper maintenance is the key to protecting your backyard investments.
It’s important in all seasons to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the home you’ve created; fall just happens to come alongside stunning views and perfect campfire weather. It’s a cozy time ideal for reading outside, enjoying the football season, hosting family and friends, and so much more. Each backyard should be as unique as its homeowner—capturing all the needs and wants to become the outdoor space of their dreams.

What are the advantages of wood-burning inserts and wood-burning stoves?
Feeling the Heat
now is the time to make sure your heating systems are operating optimally.
by PETER PROKO
With fall’s arrival and Old Man Winter not far behind, now is the perfect time for homeowners to start focusing on how they heat their home. From furnaces to fireplaces, having your heating sources inspected and serviced ahead of the frigid temperatures can go a long way to ensuring the utmost comfort while also keeping energy costs down.
To get a better understanding of how to best prepare for the upcoming change in seasons, House & Home spoke with some experts in the field to get their professional guidance to make sure no one is left out in the cold.
As the temperatures being to cool outside, what should homeowners be thinking about in terms of having their heating unit inspected and/or serviced so they aren’t dealing with issues in the dead of winter?
Every homeowner, just prior to at the beginning of fall, you should have your unit inspected or at least serviced to include the following:
• Checking the thermostat operation
• Checking that the furnace is clean
• Checking that the filer and fan motor are clean
That is all that needs to be done, there is nothing extravagant about it.
—Wayne Cangialosi, Wayne Refrigeration Air Conditioning & Heating
Signing up for a preventative maintenance plan will make sure their system is in optimal performance for efficiency this winter. Keeping systems maintained will save them money in the long run.
—Ann Carolyn Bush, R&D Heating and Cooling
What’s the best way to address cold air pouring through a fireplace?
The most common cause of what we call ‘cold hearth syndrome’ is the inherent inefficiency of traditional open wood or gas fireplaces. Think about it: your chimney is essentially a large hole in your home. Since cold air is heavier, it naturally sinks into your chimney and spills into your living room. Making matters worse, appliances like kitchen and bathroom fans, as well as HVAC systems, draw in outside air, and your chimney becomes a prime source.
Your first instinct might be to close the damper or install fireplace doors. Unfortunately, in most modern homes, that’s not enough to stop the draft. The most effective solution is to install a sealed gas or wood insert. This allows us to seal the chimney top, damper area and fireplace opening, creating an incredibly efficient, airtight fireplace system.
—David Rettinger Jr., Rettinger Fireplace Systems
You can cut your home heating costs by greater than 50% with a wood-burning insert or wood-burning stove. A lot of our customers will heat their entire home and just use fossil fuels as a supplementary heat source.
A traditional masonry fireplace is still very popular and people enjoy them, but open burning fireplaces do not generate heat the way a wood-burning insert or a wood-burning stove does. If you’re looking for something that takes the chill off and gives you really calming effects, you would want to have a traditional masonry fireplace. But if you’re looking to generate heat and save on home heating costs, you’ll probably want a wood-burning insert or a freestanding wood-burning stove.
—Leon Ochal, Chimney Scientists
What are some of the more popular requests from customers these days?
Customers are looking for rebates from their utility company if applicable, to help save money on electric and/or propane. They also want quietness and, of course, the best option cost-wise to fit their budget. … Comparing apples to apples, maybe the company they are working with is higher, but be sure to look at company profiles, reviews and the types of services they offer after the installation. —Ann Carolyn Bush
Is there an optimal thermostat setting for the winter months?
It’s really dependent on your own comfort level. What I tell people normally is that furnaces are designed to reach 72 degrees from whatever the outside temperature is. So if its 0 degrees, the furnace should reach 72 degrees in a certain amount of time. If it doesn’t reach 72 degrees, then either it’s way too cold out, or the furnace isn’t operating with peak efficiency. But that is also dependent on the insulation in your walls as well as the window insulation in the house. Because an older house with newspaper in the walls for insulation is not going to maintain that heat all the time.
I tell my customers that if they’re not home during the day in the wintertime, set your thermostat at 62-65 degrees. That will keep your pipes from freezing and it won’t cost you that much to heat the house during the day. Then, when you get home, you can raise the temperature up to your comfort level. It’s a lot easier to
maintain
reach that temperature when it’s already halfway there then having it
—Wayne Cangialosi
What are some of the most common concerns you encounter with chimneys?
A lot of people don’t even realize they have a chimney for their heating system. A huge portion of our business is preparing chimneys for your heater. So I would say for your average homeowner, just being aware that they have a chimney for their heater is good to know. And then, if they have never had that looked at, it’s maybe time to hire a certified chimney professional to do a camera inspection.
If you live in a house that was built before 1980, there’s like a 98% chance that you have a chimney for your heating system. And most people are not aware of that. So it’s best to have someone look at it before it collapses on itself and carbon monoxide backs into the basement.
—Leon Ochal
How can you eliminate odor emitting from a gas fireplace?
If you have a gas fireplace emitting unpleasant odors, it’s likely a vent-free model. These units burn room air and exhaust emissions directly back into the room, much like a gas stove. This not only leads to unpleasant smells, but also introduces moisture, which can be particularly troublesome for people with respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD.
Replacing a vent-free unit with a sealed gas fireplace creates a significantly more comfortable environment. These systems provide radiant heat while venting emissions outside the home. The result is increased room temperature without compromising indoor air quality. Many models also include remote controls and thermostatic or high/low settings for maximum comfort and control.

The Evolution of Excellence
Tired of a cracked, faded driveway? Your home deserves a stunning entrance that enhances curb appeal, lasts for decades, and requires minimal upkeep.
Architectural Concrete Design crafts high-end decorative concrete driveways that offer the look of natural stone, brick, or tile without the headaches of constant maintenance.
For over three decades, Architectural Concrete Design (ACD) has been at the forefront of the decorative concrete industry, transforming homes and commercial spaces with unparalleled craftsmanship and innovation. What began as a small operation with one truck and one employee has evolved into a thriving, industry-leading company with over 40 dedicated professionals.
ACD has undergone several rebrands, but its core mission has never wavered: building the finest decorative concrete systems for its clients. Despite industry changes, ACD has remained the gold standard for stamped and decorative concrete in the region.
Most recently, ACD has embarked on another exciting transformation. Under the leadership of Managing Partner Steve Abel, who brings a unique perspective from his tenure in software development and commercial banking with Fortune 100 companies, the company is modernizing its operations. Investing in staff development, technology and customer experience, ACD is ensuring that its tradition of excellence continues for decades.
The most remarkable aspect of ACD’s success is its people. In an industry with high turnover, ACD fosters a family culture, building careers for its employees. Many of its team members have been with the company for decades, ensuring continuity in quality and service.
Architectural Concrete Design has consistently been ahead of the curve because of its
consideration of both employees and homeowners, and its innovative techniques. From being among the first companies to bring stamped concrete to the region in the early ‘90s to developing customized solutions for complex commercial installations, ACD has been instrumental in elevating decorative concrete from a functional material to an art form.
ACD works closely with general contractors, engineers, landscape architects and homeowners to design and execute unique, high-end installations. Whether pioneering new finishes, refining texturing methods, or integrating cutting-edge reinforcement technologies, ACD ensures that every project sets a new industry benchmark.
By consistently delivering high-end, durable installations, the company has set itself apart from budget-driven competitors. ACD also remains conscious of educating homeowners and professionals about best practices, proper installation methods and material selection.
“As commercial subcontractors, we’re constantly collaborating with owners, general contractors, engineers, and designers. These high-level commercial insights allow us to refine and elevate the residential decorative concrete experience,” Abel explains.
The main concept Abel and his team aim to instill in their clients is recognizing that decorative concrete is the obvious choice for longevity and hassle-free maintenance. Unlike asphalt, which is a necessity rather than an aesthetic choice, stamped and decorative concrete driveways serve as an investment in a home’s curb appeal and long-term value.
With an unlimited array of colors, textures and patterns, homeowners can achieve the look
of natural stone, brick, tile or custom designs, while enjoying the durability of reinforced concrete. ACD specializes in custom driveway designs that complement a home’s architecture, seamlessly integrating with its surroundings.
Stamped concrete design trends continue to push creative boundaries. Classic random flagstone and slate textures remain favorites for traditional homes. Large-format segmented patterns and white-on-white concrete designs are on the rise for a modern, minimalist look. A hallmark of high-end estates, exposed aggregate is making a strong comeback, delivering a refined, textured finish.
However, stamped concrete driveways aren’t just about aesthetics—they make financial sense. Unlike asphalt which cracks, deteriorates and requires frequent resurfacing, decorative concrete is built to last decades with proper maintenance. While paver driveways shift, settle and require constant re-leveling, stamped concrete remains stable, maintenancefriendly and weed-free.
Stamped concrete driveways are remarkably easy to maintain. Basic upkeep entails occasional sweeping or a rinse with a hose. Before winter, a quick leaf-blowing session prevents organic debris from settling. Every four years, a power wash and reseal will protect the driveway’s color and finish. ACD offers this at a cost lower than asphalt resurfacing, making maintenance both simple and affordable.
ACD offers financing solutions that allow homeowners to bridge the cost difference between asphalt and decorative concrete, making it an accessible long-term investment.
“For homeowners debating between asphalt, pavers, and decorative concrete—the numbers speak for themselves. ACD’s stamped concrete driveways provide a higher-end finish with a longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs than competing materials,” Abel affirms.
With an unmatched reputation, a commitment to quality, and a passion for innovative design, ACD continues to redefine what’s possible in residential and commercial concrete installations. Call today to ensure the opportunity to discover the ACD difference where durability meets design—as their schedule is filling rapidly.
