A Passion for Perfection
by Peter Proko
they trust us to bring their next vision to life,” says Oakes. “It’s this repeat business and longterm relationships that have built what we call the FSBD family.”
Of course, with so many satisfied clients, it only makes sense that FSBD is often top of mind when it comes to referrals. Recently, after completing a massive deck project, the client was so pleased with the outcome that he referred FSBD to his neighbor, who then hired the company for a similar project. To show appreciation for this customer loyalty, FSBD has established a Refer a Friend program, where clients receive a thank-you gift for referring someone who moves forward with a project.
“Referrals are one of the most meaningful and gratifying aspects of what we do,” says Oakes. “It’s a true testament to the quality of our work when a client loves their renovation so much that they recommend us to friends, family or neighbors.”
With more than two decades in the exterior and interior renovation industry, First State Building & Design (FSBD) has established itself as a leader in high-quality home transformations, staying ahead of trends and providing clients with results that consistently exceed expectations.
Over the years, the company has refined its process as it evolves with the times, not only anticipating challenges before they arise but also devising innovative solutions to create a seamless remodeling experience for homeowners. Using a consultative approach that involves clients from the very beginning stages, FSBD is able to present thoughtful options that balance function, beauty and budget.
“As a family-owned and -operated company, we understand that home remodeling is more than just construction, it’s about transforming a space that holds memories, routines and future aspirations,” says Joe Oakes, president. “That’s why we take a personalized, hands-on approach with every project. We want our clients to feel heard, valued and confident in the process.”
Because FSBD has worked on a wide range of projects over the years, from standard renovations to large-scale remodels, the company is well equipped to execute every job it takes on with precision and care. It starts with the step-by-step Dream, Design, Build approach, created to help alleviate the stress and confusion that many homeowners face when navigating the remodeling process.
“From the first consultation to the final walkthrough, our team is there every step of
the way, ensuring the experience is as enjoyable as the finished result,” says Oakes.
And that high level of service extends beyond just one area of the home as FSBD’s skilled and experienced team are able to create stunning outdoor living areas in addition to inspiring interior spaces that work together to enhance both function and aesthetic appeal.
For many homeowners, that journey may start with a new custom deck or patio and then perhaps lead to a kitchen or bathroom remodel. No matter the need, FSBD takes pride in being a full-service, design and build company that can get the job done. Working with a highly coordinated team that handles everything from design, materials ordering, through to construction and finishing touches gives homeowners peace of mind their project is in good hands.
“What excites us most is the ability to completely transform the way people experience their homes. Imagine a beautiful openconcept kitchen that leads to an outdoor patio with a fireplace and seating area—that’s the kind of transformation we love creating,” Oakes says.
With many of FSBD’s clients being repeat customers, it shines a spotlight on the quality and attention to detail the company provides. “Once homeowners see our craftsmanship and experience the ease of working with our team,
Quality in their workmanship and providing a quality experience from start to finish leads to clients booking their projects—which is why Oakes recommends homeowners to start planning well in advance, especially when it comes to seasonal projects like decks and patios. As he states, “planning a good renovation takes time, so it’s never too early to begin.”
“Every project is unique, and timelines depend on factors such as scope, permitting and material availability. Some projects can be completed in a few weeks, while more complex renovations may take several weeks,” he says.
To make sure clients have a full understanding of how a project will progress from conception to completion, FSBD has a dedicated team of project managers who provide clear schedules and proactive communication.
It’s just further evidence on how First State Building & Design is able to stand out from others in a crowded field like the home remodeling industry.
“Our commitment to quality, seamless process and personalized approach is what sets us apart,” says Oakes. “We combine 20 years of expertise, family-driven values and full-service capabilities to deliver an experience that homeowners trust. From concept to completion, we prioritize craftsmanship, communication and customer satisfaction—and that’s why our clients keep coming back.”
Building Something Special
As deck design has evolved, the possibilities are seemingly endless.
by Peter Proko
FEW THINGS CAN BRING AS MUCH ENJOYMENT TO YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE AS A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED DECK, PERFECT FOR ENTERTAINING FAMILY AND FRIENDS ON THOSE SUN-DRENCHED LEISURELY AFTERNOONS OR WELL INTO THE EVENING. With the deck being such a focal point of the backyard experience, many homeowners are adding various amenities that balance aesthetics with function to help extend the time spent outside throughout the year.
“Today’s decks are thoughtfully designed, offering both aesthetic appeal and everyday functionality—ensuring homeowners can enjoy their outdoor spaces year-round,” says Joe Oakes, president of First State Building & Design. “Our goal is to make a customer want to live outside just as much as they love to be inside.”
The Latest Trends
With today’s society looking to maximize their time efficiently, many homeowners are opting for low-maintenance alternatives to traditional wood decking.
Jarrod Coburn, co-owner and production manager of Archadeck Outdoor Living of Mount Laurel, says that while some customers still opt for pressuretreated wood, it’s done so mainly as a budget-friendly option. “Composite is certainly king right now,” he says.
“Composite is the only way to go,”
concurs Sharon Shaw, outdoor living designer with Amazing Decks. “People’s time is valuable, they don’t want to spend it maintaining a deck.”
Shaw also dispels the notion that the cost of composite decking will break the bank. “There are folks who have it in their mind that composite is so expensive and wood is so much cheaper. But with everything that is going on with the lumber market, that is not the case. Composite decking is very competitive with pricing and well worth the time-saving efforts it provides.”
Coburn says there also has been recent momentum heading toward PVC decking as a viable option. “Mineralbased composite decking is getting some buzz right now, but the pros and cons of PVC vs. mineral-based composite have PVC winning across the board in my opinion. PVC holds less heat, is better priced, is lighter and easier to install,” he says, adding that PVC is an especially good choice for decks near pools or in sunny backyards.
Evolving Deck Design
Materials aside, the overall look and feel of a deck still comes down to a matter of personal preference. Some clients seek unique designs that showcase the ways modern decking can help create a highly customized outdoor living space, while others prefer the classic-yet-refined look
of taking the “less-is-more” approach.
“Unique elements like curved decks, spiral staircases and custom roof structures are becoming increasingly popular, adding architectural interest and setting projects apart,” says Oakes. “Additionally, blending multiple materials—such as combining carpentry with masonry— adds depth and sophistication to outdoor spaces.”
But not everyone is following the trends or looking to mimic what they see on HGTV. The team at Deck Guardian has noticed a return to simpler, cleaner designs. “Years back, everyone was designing and building multilevel decks with all kinds of cutoffs and bump-outs to make them stand out. Now it has evolved from everyone wanting to do something super intricate and custom to really taking a step back and thinking what this new deck is going to be used for. We start with the basic needs the family has, and design the space and areas to accommodate the activities they are trying to achieve,” a spokesperson says. Likewise, Shaw has noticed that what was once considered old has gained renewed life. “We are really seeing people looking at more geometrics— squares and rectangles—sticking with sleek and contemporary designs,” she says. “There’s definitely still a place for curves, but it’s really kind of come full circle and gravitated toward a more sim-

ple design in the last four or five years.”
When it comes to color, Shaw says market research indicates that homeowner preferences have moved toward more muted tones like gray, beige or bleached oak. “Manufacturers have responded with a softer palette of colors than the darker stained-wood look.”
“Color-wise, people tend to like what’s inside the house and bringing that theme outside so it makes things more inviting and kind of keeps the same flow with everything,” adds Joe Magolon, owner of StoneBridge Renovations.
A Cohesive Strategy
Extending the comforts of a home’s interior to the outdoors is indeed top of mind for those who want to foster a complementary vibe while also making their home feel larger and more inviting.
“Having the deck match the aesthetics of the home is a big deal for most customers, and a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor is always the goal when we’re designing an outdoor living space,” says Coburn.
“It’s so much more comfortable to open the door and just walk outside on the same level and have the same feel of your home, but outside,” adds a Deck Guardian spokesperson.
Oakes also notes how outdoor living
has evolved into an extension of the home, with backyards receiving the same level of attention as kitchens, bathrooms and basements.
“Today’s homeowners seek cohesive, high-end designs that mirror the luxury and functionality of interior spaces. Modern deck design is no longer about function—it’s about creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Whether through complementary
architectural details, color palettes or materials that [parallel] the home’s existing style, decks are now designed as intentional extensions of the home rather than standalone structures” he says.
Added Amenities
To help further make your outdoor living space feel like home, there are no shortage of features that can help elevate your deck. Sleek outdoor kitchens
DECK GUARDIAN
Building Something Special
equipped with pizza ovens, enhanced lighting, shaded structures, refined railing systems and heated areas are just some of the in-demand requests.
“The hope with a deck space is that it can invite your attention outdoors, but the amenities can make your home feel bigger by moving some of your activities outdoors,” says Shaw. “Outdoor kitchens, bars, entertainment spaces, fireplaces, heaters, lighting—all of those things are really expanding how a family can get outside and use a deck during different times of the day, and during different seasons.”
While every client is different, Magolon says today’s homeowners overwhelmingly want these multifunctional spaces designed for comfort, convenience and entertainment.
“People are looking for different dedicated areas— kitchens for grilling, lounging areas with TVs—to help create different atmospheres,” he says. “Homeowners are getting creative with their spaces and the nature of what’s around them. The flow of the decks [we are building] are definitely different than a lot of the cookie-cutter decks that everyone thought they had to do [in the past].”
Another addition that has risen in popularity is the installation of four-track vinyl windows, which can be retrofitted to an existing screened-in porch or added to a new structure being built.
“They provide a nice
barrier from the elements in the fall or early spring, but can also be fully open to allow a screened-in experience in the warmer months,” says Coburn.
No matter what direction your design may take you, it’s important to remember that trends come and go. The most important thing is creating a space that will offer comfort and joy not only in the here and now, but also for many years to come.
“At the end of the day, we are talking about trends and styles that are of the moment. But a deck is a long-term project and it really has to be about what speaks to that homeowner and what matches their taste and is going to complement how they live,” says Shaw.

A DURABLE LEGACY
more. by Carly Murray
As a family-owned business consisting of a multigenerational team with unfaltering passion for deck building, Get Decked has combined experience, craftsmanship and vision that have remained consistent since 1985. Looking back on 40 years of building decks, Mike from Get Decked reflects on the legacy he has built with his family and community along the way.
“After constructing tens of thousands of decks over those years I am very proud to have watched this vision become a reality—but make no mistake, every day we must work harder and make the adjustments needed to keep getting better at what we do. I have been blessed to have the best crew of carpenters on our side: my two sons, a son-inlaw and two very important carpenters who have dedicated their lives to this company, all
with the same goal of building the best possible deck available to our customers,” he says. Throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware, each of Get Decked’s projects are individualized and treated with the same care and attention that would be given to one built for a member of the family. In order to build the best decks, the Get Decked team employs top craftsmen, never subcontractors, who are just as excited about the project as the homeowners for whom it is built.
“[Our crew] understands that when choosing our company, they build the deck of their dreams. To be recognized as Delaware’s best deck builder 40 years into this dream, you have to have the perfect mixture of skill and ability to give our customers what they are expecting,” Mike reflects.
Get Decked exceeds customer expectations in every phase of the project, from installation to client service. Every element of construction is taken care of in-house, ensuring everyone on the tight-knit team is knowledgeable about each project. There are no salesmen, but there is an engineer available daily to ensure code compliance for every deck built. Customers are kept informed at every stage of the process, with an organized system in place for the utmost efficiency and personalization.
Mike envisions each deck as full of memories, and approaches each project under the pretense of its importance as the scene of essential family moments. And to truly set the scene, Get Decked also offers screen porches and lighting—which can be installed on a deck’s steps or posts for optimized elegance and functionality.
With generations worth of knowledge on the Get Decked team and the kind of kinship among them that best promotes collaboration, there is a balance of tradition and modernization. Throughout the decades, Get Decked remains in touch with all of the evolving trends and innovative features. Although deck building has evolved, personalized client service will always be a favored company attribute. New technology and tools may have sped up the process, but Get Decked is devoted to a project even after its completion.
“Over the past 40 years so much has changed: Materials have become advanced both in appearance and warranties, tools have become more advanced in their technology, customers have become more knowledgeable in their approach to choosing the right contractor. But, what has stayed the same is our honest, hardworking approach to providing our loyal customers with the attention to detail, the experience and God-given ability to build the deck that fits their home perfectly,” affirms Mike.
Matching a deck to a home seamlessly requires expertise and the ability to adjust. Every deck is completely unique, because each is designed to flawlessly harmonize with each home. Get Decked can accommodate any shape, style or design to actualize the decks of homeowners’ dreams.
“When you dedicate your life to one specific area of construction, you become a master of that trade,” says Mike. “Forty years of strictly building decks—the repetitiveness of building decks—[makes] our crew exceptional at our trade.”

SAAA Hellenic
TONE MATERIALS ARE ESSENTIALLY THE ICING OF ANY KITCHEN OR BATHROOM PROJECT, PROVIDING BOTH THE FUNCTIONAL VALUE OF PULLING THE ROOM’S COMPONENTS TOGETHER AND SOMETHING PLEASING FOR THE EYE.
Choosing the perfect stone takes careful consideration, and the guidance of someone who knows the product. At AAA Hellenic, customers can turn to professionals who have decades of experience designing and installing stone in kitchens, bathrooms, foyers, fireplaces and even in outdoor living spaces. Mike Werner, sales manager, is one such expert who has been with the family-focused company for more than 10 years.
House & Home spoke with Werner about how new products from Silestone and Dekton are giving people the high-end looks they’ve wanted at a more reasonable price.
Mike Werner, sales manager
WHEN YOU MEET WITH CLIENTS, WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THEIR LIFESTYLE TO GUIDE THEIR SELECTION?
Most individuals typically have saved pictures they found online or in magazines to establish an idea of their design preferences. We also want to know about what’s going on in the space where the stone will be used. Every household is different. Materials they might like or find attractive might not be the best choice for their home. Granite is very dense and durable. It is heat resistant and scratch resistant, with minimal maintenance. Marble
is a classic choice with unrivaled beauty and gives you a timeless look. It may be a little softer than granite, but will still give you a very durable surface.
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE EMERGING POPULARITY OF NATURAL STONE QUARTZITE AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF IT?
Engineered quartz has gained popularity over the past couple of years, but natural stone is still the most requested for its beauty and durability. Natural stone quartzite is an especially good choice for kitchens. Everyone likes the look of marble, but it’s softer and more porous. Quartzite is a dense stone that can handle the impact and functionality in a kitchen, and it’s not as porous.
We directly import this stone from the quarries to our facility, which enables us to
pass discounted pricing on to clients for rare quartzites in a wide variety of colors. The materials are temperamental and require a high level of care and precision, which Hellenic excels and specializes in.
WHAT ARE THE NEWEST MATERIALS ON THE MARKET AND WHERE ARE THEY BEST USED IN THE HOME?
We’re really excited about the design potential with products from Silestone and Dekton in shower wall and bathroom applications. People have been longing for a solid-slab, seamless look on their shower walls—nobody likes grout joints—but this comes with additional labor to get these large slabs into tight shower spaces. These new products are more durable and thinner, making them easier to transport and install. Silestone is engineered quartz and in particular has some nice combinations of natural stone-looking materials, as well as muted patterns for the monochromatic look people want. Dekton is a porcelain and glass hybrid with quartz that is more durable and still gives that desirable natural stone look. This is something that we are specializing in.
HOW CAN CUSTOMERS ARRANGE TO VISIT YOUR SLAB YARD TO SEE THEIR OPTIONS?
Our slab yard is open by appointment so we can control the amount of people in the building at a time, everything is spaced out and we also have outdoor inventory available weather permitting. We have implemented additional safety measures, including UV light systems and UV air purifiers to reduce airborne contaminants and provide more peace of mind for customers. We also offer virtual appointments.
Our inventory of marble, granite, soapstone and quartzite is very strong right now, we’ve added a lot of new products for people. We have about 200 different colors on display, and our stones are directly imported from places like Italy, Brazil and Africa. It’s always beneficial to walk through and see the stone in different lighting, and more often than not, people find something they never expected.

DArchadeck of Delaware
AVID LYONS WAS RAISED IN THE HOME IMPROVEMENT INDUSTRY. He started working with his father in general contracting as a teenager, followed by employment in a hardware business which then transitioned into working for other companies in the industry. However, Lyons couldn’t shake the itch of breaking out onto his own. Decks have been something he enjoyed designing and building, so it was only natural for him to launch Archadeck of Delaware. Operating since 1980, Archadeck is a trusted and reliable custom deck, patio and porch builder, serving Delaware since 2017 with their expertise and knowledge in the decking industry and providing the best materials and design that can turn your dream outdoor living space into reality.
House & Home spoke with Lyons about how deck preferences have changed and why Archadeck stands apart from the rest.
David Lyons, owner
WHAT MAKES ARCHADECK STAND OUT FROM ITS COMPETITORS?
We strive to build at a higher standard. We build above and beyond the code, and we aim to excel in customer service and communication. From the initial phone call in the beginning until the project is finishing up, we’re going to be spending a lot of time with our clients. I’ve had several people tell me they were surprised we showed up for the appointment. Everyone has those nightmare stories. While other companies use subcontractors, they can be hit or miss. Our crews are employees, highquality people with benefits and workers’ compensation. With us, customers can expect professionalism, a clean job site and honesty.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN DECKING TRENDS EVOLVE OVER THE YEARS?
More people are getting away from wood, although some still go with pressure-treated wood, but there has been a big increase in costs for it at the moment. Composite is the preferred choice because it’s maintenance free and comes in a variety of colors. For a time curved decks were popular but we don’t do many of those anymore. I like doing two tones such as having the frame in a different color than the boards or trying a parting board in a different color. You can change the design of it just by changing the colors of the deck boards.
I also see more people who want a screenedin porch or sunroom, not just a deck.
MANY PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO THINK ABOUT HAVING A DECK BUILT FOR THIS SUMMER. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THEIR TIMELINE?
People should pull the trigger fast. Right now, it would be June or July before we could start on it because we are booked so far out. With summer fast approaching, that wait time will only get longer. If you
would like to have a new outdoor living space in time to enjoy for the summer, don’t wait. But, with all of the features available, decks can be enjoyed well into fall, so there is still plenty of time in the year to get use out of it.
WHAT FINAL WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR HOMEOWNERS AS THEY RESEARCH COMPANIES FOR THEIR DECK PROJECT?
I would make sure the company is insured and has workers’ compensation insurance. You might save a couple thousand up front by going with a company that cuts corners, but if someone gets hurt on your property it could cost you tens of thousands of dollars or more. Look for the best value— typically the best value is not the lowest price. Check out the company’s workmanship and professionalism. We seek to build something for our customers that they can enjoy knowing that it is installed correctly and we can be proud of building it.
significant changes in the industry,” McCool says, “other than the increased popularity of adding more bells and whistles to the pool.”
Natural stone is popular for the coping along the pool’s edge, McCool says, as well as darker finishes in the pool. A majority of Swim-Mor Pools & Spa customers are using a salt sanitation system and automated controls in their new pools, as well as choosing to add water features— waterfalls, fountains, deck jets and plenty more.
Swim-Mor Pools & Spas partner and general manager Mike McCool recognizes that there is a lot more that goes into a new pool than there used to be.
“The backyard has transformed over the last 10 years or so away from being just ‘your yard’ and into another room of your home with the same care and detail put into it,” McCool says. “Because of this the design of your pool has become more than just a pool but the focus of the outdoor living room. There is a lot of coordination with creating what a customer’s backyard haven is going to be.”
Fortunately, the family-owned South Jersey business is more than up to the challenge of bringing a customer’s backyard pool vision to life. In its 55 years of business, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas has helped to create thousands of backyard paradises throughout the region.
And what’s more, they make the process as easy as possible for their customers.
“We’re a start-to-finish gunite custom pool company—the design, the build and the service afterward,” McCool says. “We have our own crews that handle the work which helps us control quality and makes the process go smoother.”
There are six designers at Swim-Mor Pools & Spas who can help guide customers on a new pool design. The company’s countless photos and 3D drawings can provide inspiration, and the final design is what best suits the backyard, according to McCool.
“Size, setbacks, elevations. We’re here to help you work through that,” he says.
Finding the right pool
“The first step is to give us a call. From there we’ll set up an appointment to come out to your home,” McCool says. “That way we can see all the aspects of the property. What the contours of the yard are. What the access is like. Even the best location based on where the sun rises and sets.”
The timeline to get started is largely based on the homeowner and how decisive they are, McCool adds. Once everything is confirmed, things move to contract and Swim-Mor Pools & Spas starts working on permits.
“Time is of the essence. Permits can take from two weeks to several months, all depending on the municipality,” McCool says.
Pool popularity
Prior to March 2020, business was strong for Swim-Mor Pools & Spa. That was only boosted when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region.
“The pool business was never busier than it was in COVID,” McCool says. “The lockdowns forced people to stay at home and they immediately focused on the backyard.”
Although that business boom has settled down a bit, things are still busy. But pool trends, according to McCool, have held fairly steady.
Hampton-style pools have long been a customer favorite, but equally popular are the freeform designs, which can be customized to fit into any backyard environment.
“Through COVID there have not been many
The company also offers many in- pool fixtures for lounging—bar stools and benches that can tie into your outdoor kitchen or can run inside the pool, along with table areas, sundecks for your lounge chairs and custom fire features. Color LED lighting packages come with every pool, too.
The majority of customers also choose elements to lengthen their pool-enjoying season, as heaters and spas. “It will extend your season by a few months,” McCool says.
Why Swim-Mor Pools & Spas?
Being a local family-owned independent business makes Swim-Mor Pools & Spas a smart choice for customers, according to McCool.
“We’re not national. We’re not a franchise. And we do not try to sell everything. Our expertise has been building custom gunite pools for 55 years and that’s what we focus on,” he says. Save for a few aspects that are legally required to be outsourced to independent licensed contractors, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas uses all of their own crews for the pool construction, which McCool says is unique for the pool business.
In addition to building new pools, Swim-Mor Pools & Spas also specializes in renovating gunite pools. The experienced team can handle everything from your standard renovation of replacing your coping, tile and plaster finish, to adding features such as raised water features, sun decks, and even spas that were not originally built with the pool. McCool says, “Even though your pool may not have originally been built with the more current popular features doesn’t mean that SwimMor cannot add them now.”
The 2023 pool season is already underway for the business, which thanks to the mild winter meant they were able to start construction early. Pool openings and service will ramp up from mid-April to Memorial Day.
But, for those looking to add a pool to their backyard this summer, it’s not too late. “We’re still building for this year. We’re still selling for this summer,” McCool says. “But don’t waste time. Get in!”

PACE ELECTRICAL & GENERATOR SERVICES
How long have you been in this industry? 30 years.
Did you have another career before this one? No.
When did you decide to go into business for yourself?
My mom and stepdad started Pace Electric in 1985 when I was 6 years old—this was mainly a commercial electrical construction company. My stepdad and mom always believed I would run the company someday; however, I had zero interest. When my mom passed away in 2008, I helped my stepdad close down Pace Electric. He had lost his partner in life and [in] business, and her passing was at the height of the recession. He lost his passion for growing the business in addition to it being an extremely difficult season to weather for construction. In 2010 I made the decision that I wanted to start my own electrical business, and I opened up Pace Electrical
& Generator Services focusing strictly on residential-style services. I added a commercial division in 2015.
What appealed to you about this industry?
I am passionate about the electrical and generator field because it allows me to support homeowners in a market where many companies fall short. I take pride in helping customers receive high-quality work at a fair price from a reliable company that genuinely cares about their needs and well-being.
What has been the biggest obstacle to being a woman in business?
One of the biggest challenges has been earning the same level of respect as my male counterparts, despite having the knowledge, experience and leadership ability to be at the table. Early on I had to work twice as hard to prove myself, but over time, results [spoke] louder than assumptions. I’ve built a reputation based
on performance not perception, and that’s how I continue to push forward.
Who has been your biggest inspiration?
My mother was my greatest inspiration— smart, strong, supportive and kind. While my stepdad was president, she was the one who held everything together for the business, leading with both strength and grace.
What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?
Balancing customer satisfaction with taking care of my team. I really value both the work I do and the people who help me make it happen.
How do you define “success”?
For me, success is delivering high-quality service to customers while creating wellpaying, stable jobs for my employees. Success isn’t just about growth or revenue—it’s about building something meaningful, earning respect in a male-dominated industry, and leading with strength and integrity, just like my mother did. I also pride myself in being a WBENC certified business, which stands for the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. The WBENC is the gold standard for womenowned business certifications. It means a lot to be a woman-certified business, representing resilience, diversity, and empowerment in every opportunity I take on as a woman business owner.
What is something you can’t live without?
I can’t live without a sense of purpose, whether it’s running my business, providing for my employees or being the very best mother I can be. I need to feel that I am making a contribution to family, friends, customers, employees and society.
How do you unwind after a stressful day?
I love spending time with my family, whether we head to the movies, bowling or game night at home. Additionally, I recently fell in love with volunteering as a cheer coach for my daughter’s cheer program. I also exercise frequently using my Peloton and lifting weights.

From aesthetics to functionality, regional experts provide advice on how to transform a pool into the outdoor living space of one’s dreams.
by CARLY MURRAY
Having a personal pool is the best way to achieve both luxury and amusement in an outdoor living oasis totally customizable for each household—but like everything worthwhile, it takes planning, time, education, options and upkeep. Modern options can take a pool to the next level with exciting colors, lighting, designs, shapes and add-on features. The variability within and surrounding a pool is what expands it into much more than a place to swim.
It is that stark distinction between personalized pools across the region that makes them so impressive. By starting fresh, or by updating an already existing outdoor living space, homeowners can expand their home to the backyard with every member of the family’s unique preferences. It might even be the favorite hang-out spot all summer long to encourage fresh air, staying active and spending time away from screens.
House & Home Magazine spoke with local pool and deck specialists to learn more about “taking the plunge” into pool designs, installation and maintenance.
What are the most popular pool options that homeowners have incorporated within the past year?
“Recently, people with smaller backyards are putting in large wading pools that are not deep, more for relaxing and having cocktails. They are also using low voltage lighting for a more relaxing atmosphere.”
—Donald
Panetta, owner of D. Panetta Contracting, LLC
“Water purification systems, salt water systems, quartz ozone systems, and water features like waterfalls and raised walls with waterfalls coming off of them [are
most popular]. Then, blossoming into landscape items like a poolside cabana, a bar area [or] sun lounges. Probably about 60%-65% of the pools that we build have sun lounges in them. …[In addition,] we offer fire features, a swim-up bar area, outdoor kitchens and cabanas. There’s a wide spectrum of choices out there, it just depends on what's going to fit into everybody’s wants and budgets.”

How does one decide what styles and features are best for them?
“First, we discuss the goals of the customer and I try to get an understanding of the type of person the customer is. If the customer’s home has a flow that should be continued in the yard, I steer the customer toward a freeform [pool] that has curves that can accentuate the existing flow. If the customer likes lines and geometric shapes and the house reflects this style, I steer the customer toward a rectangle pool that will continue the existing aesthetic of the property. This is not a definite process for all customers because some rectangles have the features that a customer is looking for, but the property has a flow that would lend itself to a freeform. If this is the case, I make suggestions for hardscaping and landscaping that will shift the sharp angles of the rectangle pool toward a flow of green space and curved pavers and deck space.”

What are some features that can transform a pool into an outdoor living space?
“There are many elements or features that can transform your pool area into an out-

door living space [including] adding an outdoor kitchen with dining area, firepit area, a sitting area with gazebo, or adding outdoor low-voltage lighting to bring your outdoor living to life.”
—Donald Panetta
“To transform a pool into an outdoor ‘living’ space it would need to have areas for relaxation such as a tanning deck, seats, a spa—features that encourage family and guests to spend time in the pool and not just around
it. Some type of shade from the sun is also needed to use the pool as an area for relaxation. Some chose a large umbrella for the tanning deck and recently we’ve even installed a motorized retractable shade over the pool to allow the children to play outside in the water for longer during the hotter days.
When planning a full backyard renovation or new-build masterplan, homeowners should think about how they can make their life easier through automation. Planning this from the begin-
ning makes everything flow so much easier. If you’re going to have a pool, a spa, speakers, a retractable shade and fire feature it would be worth doing some research on how these can all be brought together via a single voice control system, for example.”
—Keith Frederick, owner of ELA Outdoor Living
How has technology changed over the years?
“Technology has moved toward more automation and less personal maintenance of the pool. Customers can control their pump, heat and lights from an app on their phone. This app can also be linked to the water features and landscape lighting. Robotic cleaners can clean the pool floor, walls and tile line. There are solar powered cleaners that float on the pool surface and target debris that is floating at the top, which cuts down on clogging the skimmer. Salt generators, UV/ozone generators and acid
feeders allow for easier chemical maintenance and greater sanitation and pH regulation.”

What colors and designs are trending most for pool decks?
“Stamped concrete is one of the most customizable materials out there for outdoor living. We can match almost any aesthetic—from rustic to ultra-modern—using a variety of stamps that mimic stone, brick, tile or wood. …We’re seeing a strong trend toward cool, coastal-inspired color palettes—think soft grays, driftwood tones, and light taupes. These hues not only create a sophisticated, calming atmosphere, but they also stay cooler underfoot, which is ideal for sunny pool environments. Pattern-wise, largeformat slate textures remain popular for their clean lines and modern appeal. Another standout trend is the wood plank stamp in weathered, beachy tones—it offers the warmth
and charm of natural wood with the durability of concrete.”
—Steve Abel, managing partner of Architectural Concrete Design
How should deck design vary between the different areas of an outdoor living space?
“Many of our clients are extending their pool decks into full backyard living spaces with outdoor kitchens, dining areas and fire features. In those cases, we often use complementary designs to help visually zone each area. For example, we
might use a slate pattern around the pool and transition to a wood plank look under a pergola or outdoor kitchen. In some cases, we use the same pattern throughout but shift the coloring or finish to create contrast. These layered designs make the entire space feel cohesive and intentional.”
—Steve Abel
What is the best pool water system?
“We've been [offering] salt water for about 20 years—we’re 100% salt water. …It’s much
healthier. You're [converting] natural salt into chlorine, but it's more user-friendly. It's less irritating to the skin, to the eyes— especially for people who have skin conditions, it's a lot better.”
—Dominic DiCesare
How do you balance functionality with aesthetics when it comes to customization?
“I believe the outside should be an extension of the home’s architecture, but also of the owners’ personalities. If someone has a large enough yard and is more of a creative energy, they might want a freeform pool with natural flowing curves and unique features. You can add features to any pool, but the freeform or kidney-shaped pools allow for really interesting additions. …[Fiberglass pools] offer lots of different shapes and sizes and are customizable to a certain extent with waterfalls, slides, lighting, coping options and the pool deck.”
