It’s that time of year again — the annual Detroit Design Awards!
After a year of preparation, our favorite celebration is finally here, and those of us at Detroit Design couldn’t be more excited to announce this year’s award-winners.
This past fall we received a record-breaking number of entries — proof of the abundant talent that makes up this great state. Our panel of industry experts, made up of some of the country’s most prestigious and influential design leaders, weighed each submission carefully and meticulously. Once their votes were cast, the winners were clear. Today, we enthusiastically recognize those top honors.
What I love about these awards goes beyond the inspiration that’s evident in each project entered. The Detroit Design Awards provide a chance for so many people to see the creative genius of the designers, builders, architects, and landscape artists who fill these pages with their brilliance.
The judges marveled over an architectural wonder perfectly perched on a dune — a residence that not only features three levels and a site-perfect layout, but exceeds the requirements of the Michigan Critical Dune Act, proving that great design can also be environmentally sustainable. They also were excited to see a Wallace Frost home find new life, a master bath that seems to float above the clouds with its views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a winding staircase that effortlessly blends function with art, a Bauhaus-inspired gem in Ann Arbor with a perfect palette of primary colors, a serene backyard landscape with a specimen gingko tree and a cascading stream, a bookstore in Oxford that elevates the shopping experience for its guests, and so many more one-of-a-kind designs.
One of my favorite categories is our Readers’ Choice for Overall Home. I not only love to see the diverse array of homes that are nominated (more than 40 this year!), but I love that the winner of this category is chosen by you — the heart of our publication. This year, a 10,000-square-foot masterpiece from Sapphire Luxury Homes reigned supreme, and from its limestone façade to its grand great room, it’s easy to see why. You’ll definitely want to take note of our 2025 Rising Star, Detroit-based designer Colin Tury. Make sure to check out his work in person at Supino Pizzeria in Eastern Market and the much-talked-about modern Mexican eatery, Vecino, in Midtown.
I also would like to acknowledge and thank the photographers of these remarkable spaces. Their ability to capture the beauty of these impressive homes and businesses, from the show-stopping angles to the subtle textures and the slight nuances, demands applause. Their brilliant photography brings to life the story and passion behind each project.
I want to congratulate this year’s award-winners and their teams for the tremendous efforts that went into these prize-winning places, as well as for the ingenuity and originality displayed in each nominated project. Well done!
Let the celebration begin!

An extra-long living room in Birmingham was the perfect canvas for designer Sissy Yellen’s latest masterpiece
TEXT BY CHRISTINE HILDEBRAND
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY ENGLER
When Sissy Yellen’s client bought an apartment in downtown Birmingham, she recruited the owner of Sissy Yellen Living to create an inspired dwelling that was perfect for her and her dog.
As with many great designs, contrast was key. The apartment building is traditional, but Yellen’s client wanted a home with an interior that matched her avant-garde personality. “The living room is the focal point. It sets the tone for the other rooms, so it was a priority from the start,” the homeowner says. “My main concern was that it felt like a very narrow room with a long, empty white wall. I was unsure where to start.”
Given the length of the room, Yellen needed to find a way to activate it. The solution was a custom 22-foot rug that allows for a personalized floor plan. Inspired by internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s home, Yellen utilized the elongated length to create two living rooms within one. There’s an extra-long, 10-foot tufted sofa, as well as two sets of chairs and coffee tables. “That’s one of my favorite aspects of the room,” the client shares.
Given the scale of the living room, Yellen searched for something her client would not only connect with, but that was large enough to fill the space. She happened to spot this original drawing as a standing listing late one evening. At over 8 feet tall and 17 feet wide, “the scale sounded the alarm,” Yellen says. The artwork would be a make-or-break element, and while at first the idea seemed crazy, it ended up being the perfect marriage of artistic forces.
“My favorite thing (about the panels) is the character that their age gives them; you can see where things have been erased or patched over, and there are a lot of different holes from being on display in various places. All of these things make them all the more interesting,” the client says.
PATTERN PLAY
From floor-to-ceiling Schumacher sheers (they look neutral from afar but feature a subtle polka dot pattern) to touches of bouclé, velvet, and linen, mixing textures is a hallmark of this contemporary living room.
A VISIONARY CHOICE
An original, full-scale exterior drawing from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the perfect piece to enrich the expansive wall of this elongated living room.
One of the biggest tasks was to deliver “anything but boring,” Yellen says, adding that the client’s living room needed to be comfortable and high-performing. The color palette is natural and feminine, with a little grit, while the textures are playful, with touches of bouclé, velvet, and linen. “It’s a mixture of earthy, calm colors that feature patterns that hold a touch of drama,” Yellen says, noting the floor-to-ceiling Schumacher sheers that look neutral from afar but actually have a subtle polka dot pattern.
In terms of furniture, one coffee table features a Calacatta viola marble with violet-colored veins streaming throughout, while another, a piece from a gallery in Pittsburgh, has smoked glass and a distinguishable squiggle iron base. Then there’s the showstopper: four larger-than-life panels from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the world-renowned architect. The masterpiece, a fullscale exterior drawing, is titled “Museum for a City,” and was a part of a 1968 Mies van der Rohe Retrospective at The Art Institute of Chicago. Yellen found the prized piece through an art dealer in Chicago.
When asked what the key ingredient to the project’s success is, the designer replies, “My client really trusted me. That’s the most important part of our relationship — trust.” Yellen, a selftaught interior designer, launched her business in 2019. Because her family is in the construction business, she never skipped a beat absorbing information. “I’ve been general contracting projects since I was 18 years old,” Yellen says.
What’s next for the busy designer and mom of four? She hopes to grow her team and build a retail-facing experience for clients interested in high-end, bespoke furniture. Stay tuned!

EDUCATION REDESIGN
Studio Reassembled, a revolutionary new program from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, o ers architects-in-training a fresh take on the traditional studio format.
U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has revolutionized creative collaboration with its recently launched program, Studio Reassembled
TEXT BY CHRISTINE HILDEBRAND | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEWKOW
Ask any architecture student and they’ll tell you that they hold studio time in the highest regard. With access to 2-D drawings, 3-D models, tools, technology, faculty, and colleagues, time in the studio offers architects-in-training an opportunity to dive into the creative process.
When the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning rolled out Studio Reassembled — a fresh take on the classic studio format — last fall, students were thrilled. “Studio Reassembled is an experiment in collaborative design,” says Anya Sirota, the associate dean of academic initiatives at Taubman College. In her role as associate dean, Sirota led a pilot project aimed at revitalizing student engagement following a post-pandemic slump.
Jacob Comerci, the managing director of academic initiatives at Taubman College, says that, in addition to empty seats, studio culture had become lackluster. “This was a great opportunity to reimagine the studio experience,” he says. Like many successful, design-driven solutions, Studio Reassembled didn’t materialize overnight; the project is a result of transparent, campus-wide conversations, time spent testing concepts, and letting ideas mature. With the project’s goals in place, Sirota, Comerci, and student research assistants embarked on a
journey to reassemble the studio.
When metro Detroit-based architect Maureen Doyle was a Taubman College student from 2010 to 2014, she recalls the studio layout consisted of one large open floor with rearrangeable desks. Every semester, one specific desk was assigned to each student. “Space is tight when you’re building models and laying out large plots, so people became territorial of their areas,” Doyle says. Today, everything — from desks to tools — is shared, to promote connectivity and collaboration.
So far, Studio Reassembled has proven to be a success. Students who have taken a studio course report increased creativity, which makes sense given it’s a “living lab,” Sirota notes. “Studio Reassembled addresses the challenges of contemporary architecture in a rapidly changing world,” she says.
Adds Comerci: “When you’re operating in the world professionally, in any field, you aren’t siloed and isolated working alone on a masterpiece; it’s a collaborative affair.”
Graduate students work adjacent to undergraduate students, and classmates are able to gain exposure to other students’ insights. Taubman College senior graduate student Martin Rodriguez sees Studio Reassembled as a community-based, student-governed space. Rodriguez is one of four student research
assistants who helped build Studio Reassembled, alongside Sirota and Comerci.
Housed in 1,500-square-foot space built by Taubman College faculty, students, alumni, and makers, Studio Reassembled offers a suite of amenities including student community managers, a library and faculty librarian, an expert climate consultant managing the Climate Lab, a TVLab research assistant, and a visualization lab.
Nathan Doud, a 2011 Taubman College master’s graduate, and the founder and owner of Doud Designs, LLC, in Ann Arbor, designed much of the studio’s custom furniture. Sirota developed a reconfigurable table she named “The Babushka Conference Table,” inspired by meals gone awry at her grandmother’s home. “The human factor is important. The design (of Studio Reassembled) is exuberant and colorful. Human beings are what make it,” she says.
Studio Reassembled proves one doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to change it; sometimes rotating it does the trick. “It was evolution with guardrails,” Comerci says, noting that the new studio refuses to be static; it’s an environment meant to evolve from one semester to the next. “It’s a space that admits that you need a village, and interdisciplinary expertise, to make meaningful work.”

Inspired by a veritable treasure chest of history, a team of creatives transforms The Dearborn Inn
TEXT BY MEGAN SWOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISAAC MAISELMAN
The Dearborn Inn has been given new life. The 94-year-old property, which was originally built by Henry Ford and designed by Albert Kahn across from what was once the Ford Airport, is again welcoming guests after undergoing a gleaming transformation.
“It was a Marriott hotel and now it’s part of the Marriott Autograph Collection,” explains Marriott’s William McGowan, who attended the inn’s grand opening in late March, after the facility had been closed for two years during renovations.
So, what does an Autograph location mean? For starters, these specifically designated hotels must evoke an upscale and luxurious appeal. “They have to be wrapped around a brand that’s experiential and that ties back to the building’s core elements,” notes McGowan, of Marriot’s Global
Design Division. One of those core elements is the stunning marble flooring in the lobby.
“There was discussion about that being replaced, as there was a lot of wear and tear. But as we were initially touring it, we said, This is beautiful; let’s get some folks to polish, repair, and refurbish (the floor). It needed to be saved,” says McGowan, who’s based at Marriott’s Bethesda, Md., headquarters.
Collaborators on the renovation included Ford Motor Co.; the Ford Land Design Team and partners, including design firm AvroKO; interior specialist Dash Design; and Detroit architecture firms Kraemer Design Group and Quinn Evans Architects.
Each played a role in how the 135-room inn pays homage to its past through original design elements, like a photo booth (an original phone booth that now looks like a Ford Tri-Motor airplane) in which you can take a vintage-style photo.
Above: The Four Vagabonds lounge is named after what visionaries Henry Ford, John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone called themselves when traveling. Above right: In the private event/ dining area, a huge and colorful mural by Detroit artist Ryan Herberholz depicts these four iconic men.
Furniture buffs appreciate the Michiganthemed designs, including Platner chairs (architect Warren Platner spent 1960-65 working for Eero Saarinen in Michigan) and hallway carpeting inspired by Loja Saarinen’s tapestry patterns. (She was the founder of the weaving department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.)
The warm, contemporary guest rooms feature four-poster walnut beds, Eames chairs, and artwork from or inspired by the Ford Motor Co. archives. A sketchbook for guests is an idea borrowed from Henry Ford and his friends, who would write down ideas on the backs of napkins. Blankets from Sackcloth + Ashes, which donates a blanket to a homeless shelter for each one purchased, also adorn the rooms. (Guests can buy a blanket in the hotel’s gift shop.)
“The entire design was about thinking of personal experiences so guests could walk away with a new idea or new memory. That’s the Autograph collection,” says Greg Lattin, assistant vice president at Marriott International.
The inn’s restaurant, Clara’s Table, is named after Ford’s wife, who was a gardening enthusiast. It’s wrapped in sumptuous green draperies and grass-green painted millwork — a “faithful renovation of the space,” McGowan shares, and a nod to Clara Ford’s green thumb.
“We’ll eventually be growing food and herbs right outside its windows,” says Dearborn Inn General Manager Joleisha Bradley.
A LOVELY NOD
Above: The inn’s restaurant, Clara’s Table, is named after Ford’s wife, who was a gardening enthusiast. It’s wrapped in sumptuous green draperies and grassgreen painted millwork.
Meanwhile, the Four Vagabonds lounge and its rich navy-blue paneling (much of which is the original knotty pine) is named after what visionaries Henry Ford, John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone called themselves when traveling. “They would go on these trips in nature, starting in around 1915,” Bradley says. “They’d talk about ideas.” In the private event/dining area, a huge and colorful mural by Detroit artist Ryan Herberholz depicts the four men sitting by a river discussing those ideas.
One can easily imagine Walt Disney, Orville Wright, Norman Rockwell, and Bette Davis, sporting fedoras and bias-cut apparel, taking in the checkerboard Italian marble floor and gazing into a fireplace (wrapped in the now-preserved green marble), as they once did. One can also envision Henry and Clara Ford passing through the lobby en route to the restaurant for their Sunday dinner.
And what would the inn’s original owner think about the legendary hotel’s transformation? Jim Dobleske, chairman and CEO of Ford Land, believes it would get rave reviews. “I think Henry Ford would say it’s charming, and while it focuses on its history, it also moves us so well into the future.”

Function and form blend effortlessly in this glorious outdoor space

At a new home in Bloomfield Hills, an indoor/outdoor space for all seasons has become a fun destination for family and friends. In the winter, a fireplace, ceiling heaters, heated floors, and vinyl enclosures add comfort to the well-equipped kitchen and cozy living area. Come summer, when it’s time to embrace the warmer weather, protective screens keep bugs at bay.
durability and hides dirt. “It’s an outdoor space,” Lousia says. “There’s a lot of natural light, so it doesn’t feel dark in there, but it turns moody at night. There’s a lot of indirect lighting.” Other practical considerations included choosing Sunbrella fabric for the sectional and vinyl counter stools at the island. “They’re very lightweight and stackable,” she notes.
Additional materials include dark wood details on the ceiling and exterior stone for the fireplace, which supports an outdoor TV. The kitchen incorporates a sink, along with a grill, pizza oven, and griddle. “They entertain a lot,” Lousia says. The property also has a pool with a hot tub, fire pit, and basketball court.
Thanks to heaters and screens, this indoor/outdoor space, complete with a kitchen and bathroom, is seasonless.
Interior designer Sandra Lousia, who owns SLS Designs Inc. in Bloomfield Hills, worked on the whole home with builder Dan Moore of Moore Custom Homes. In the indoor/outdoor gathering and entertainment area, she says the homeowners, a couple with three kids, “wanted it to feel like they were still inside the home and it was all part of the interior, because they use it year-round.”
The outdoor kitchen includes polished countertops in seafoam green, while dark quartzite with a leathered finish on the backsplash offers
The outdoor bathroom can only be accessed from the backyard. “It’s nice because no one has to walk through the house to get to the bathroom when they have a pool party,” the designer says. The convenient space, which includes a changing room, features vinyl wallcovering, a wood vanity topped with porcelain, and a shower with reeded porcelain tile that looks like bamboo.
“Someone can use the changing room (at the same time, because) it has a separate door from the bathroom,” Lousia explains. “There are two doors from the outside; one goes into the bathroom and one goes into the changing room, and there’s another door between them, too, so they can be used in a lot of different ways.”
Even the poolside lounge chairs are flexible in nature. “Function and durability were very important with this project,” she says. “It’s not just about the beauty, especially with kids, and they entertain a lot. So it gives you both.”

For this stunning 1914 English revival, inspiration was drawn from the home’s original design elements and character. The same wainscoting from the foyer was brought into the space, but painted white for a fresh feel, while in the kitchen, traditional finishes and styling were chosen. Formerly a large office, the Eras Bookstore in Oxford was transformed into a vibrant literary haven. The client’s vision was to create distinct areas. The use of different flooring textures and colors helps achieve that goal. In the café, colorful tiles were selected, while the book section is distinguished by vinyl flooring that mimics concrete. To enhance the ambience, wooden pergolas were installed on the ceiling to mark the shop’s different zones.

VERSA DESIGN
In an unsuspecting alley you’ll find Detroit’s most intimate room: Saksey’s. Born from the intersection of indulgence, mischief, charm, and sophistication, this cocktail lounge is an invitation to immerse oneself within a seamless blend of opulence and warmth. The world above ceases to exist within this petite space, where elevated hospitality is bolstered by the refined use of glossy woods, sumptuous velvets, dreamy lighting, and adventurous patterns.

Upon entering Lucido Fine Jewelry in Birmingham, visitors are greeted by a 24-foot-long sculptural reception desk that’s centered below a raw walnut wall-to-ceiling surround illuminated by more than 150 feet of indirect cove lighting. The design team aimed to emulate the client’s reputation for showcasing beautiful and timeless jewelry in the interior and architectural design; the result is an equally high-end experience for its customers.

Nestled within Detroit’s Capitol Park Historic District is the new headquarters of Pophouse — a strategic and fitting home for the boutique commercial interior design firm. The new 5,000-square-foot office in the David Stott Building boasts a variety of spaces for use by team members and clients alike. The forward-thinking environment was designed with a hospitality-driven mindset, recognizing the need to provide a place for the team to create and thrive, yet also providing areas for socialization, collaboration, and respite.

PATRICK THOMPSON DESIGN
Thanks to a sweeping renovation of Detroit’s Hotel David Whitney, the interior now blends the building’s gilded grandeur with a genuine sense of approachability. The heart of the renovation is the soaring four-story atrium, which sits beneath an ornate skylight. Elaborate white terracotta stonework, rich slabs of marble and mahogany, and gold accents provide a sophisticated backdrop. At once elegant and informal, the lobby welcomes guests and locals to unwind in the city’s grand living room.

When Roland Berger, a global consulting firm, relocated its Detroit office to a historic site on Woodward Avenue, the firm desired a headquarters that celebrated its heritage and forward-thinking culture. The design team wanted to achieve a vibe that exuded sophistication and functionality, featuring thoughtful layers of hospitality. The result is a blend of new and historic, focused, and collaborative spaces, with ample room for making social connections.

Introducing our 2025 Rising Star, designer Colin Tury — Congratulations!
TEXT BY GIUSEPPA NADROWSKI
For southeast Michigan native Colin Tury, it was “the ability to affect everything in a space, and tell a story while doing it” that first drew him to interior design. “It’s amazing what you can do with a sheet of paper and a pencil.”
Before launching his eponymous firm, Tury Design, in 2024, Tury earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and received a Master of Fine Arts from Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis. He also served as the furniture and lighting director at AvroKO in New York City, and contributed to retail design, audio products, and lifestyle goods at Shinola before co-founding Midwest Common, where he specialized in branded interior spaces with a focus on custom furniture, fixtures, and lighting.
At his new Detroit-based firm, Tury emphasizes custom experiences. His goal, he says, is to “always tell stories and let the spaces be the vehicle for that.” Functional design augmented by storytelling is how he describes his design philosophy.
He also has a highly specialized focus on custom millwork and lighting, as demonstrated by one of his favorite projects: Vecino, a modern Mexican restaurant and bar in Midtown Detroit.
“Vecino is a great case study of brand-applied narrative,” Tury says. “We got to affect so many elements in the space, and it only helps transcend the patrons’ experience.” Another favorite is Supino, the beloved pizzeria in Eastern Market. “It was fun because the challenge was to improve the space without losing the soul of the brand.”
In his off time, Tury enjoys making things and can often be found in his shop, creating. When not in his shop, he loves to be outside — especially if it involves camping and food. “Any excuse to make food in the woods is good enough for me,” he says.
Well deserved, Colin!
A stunning estate from Sapphire Luxury Homes wins the 2025 Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home

Your votes were counted, and the winner was clear. The Cameron, from Bloomfield Hills-based Sapphire Luxury Homes, took first place and has received the Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home.
Truthfully, it’s no surprise. This 10,000-square-foot masterpiece, completed in May 2024, features a Mediterraneanmeets-modern aesthetic and is the picture of luxurious living.
Once within, the impressive foyer wows with a two-story glass wall and floating staircase. The home continues to stun with its EuroCraft kitchen (featuring Miele appliances and a moody yet sophisticated palette), dining area, and two-story great room, which features an Italian marble fireplace and a gorgeous light fixture that glistens above the space. To preserve the room’s airy feel, structural support was added.
In the main suite, a cutting-edge design creates a lasting impact with standout features such as a private balcony that overlooks the spacious lot. The en suite bathroom is a spa-like retreat with dramatic details like a double-door shower and a spiral staircase that leads to an expansive closet.
EUROPEAN INSPIRED
Completed in May 2024, this custom masterpiece features a modern Mediterranean aesthetic.
Upon arrival, one is first greeted by a classic brick paver driveway that leads to the home’s timeless limestone façade. The serene site, a 1-acre lot in the prestigious Bloomfield Hunt Club community, is surrounded by meticulous landscaping, a breathtaking pool, and indoor/outdoor living spaces, and is nestled near the community’s horse stables.
Unparalleled luxury continues below, in the home’s lower level, where a 20-seat theater steals the spotlight. A home gym, spa facilities, and wine bar can also be found in this entertainment hub.
Throughout the estate, the design team was challenged to create a contemporary space that drew on the coastal styles of southern Europe, while also balancing functionality and a cohesive look. Each piece was intentionally chosen and well-thought-out, and the result is a truly remarkable, one-of-a-kind home that redefines elegant design.
Congratulations, Sapphire Luxury Homes!

WITH NEARLY TWO DECADES OF REAL estate experience and a reputation built on design insight, professionalism, and dedication, Michael Mason continues to stand out among metro Detroit’s top real estate professionals. Recently named a 2025 Real Estate All-Star by Hour Media — his 10th consecutive year earning this recognition — Michael is known for helping buyers and sellers navigate the market with confidence, whether it’s new construction, luxury listings, or land acquisition.
As associate broker at Arterra Realty based in Rochester, Michael offers clients a full-service approach rooted in knowledge, creativity, and a refined understanding of design and value. His expertise spans both residential resale and new builds, with a specialization in the Oakland County market, including Rochester, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, and Lake Orion.
One of the defining aspects of Michael’s career has been his ongoing partnership with Arteva Homes, a premier custom builder and 2025 finalist in the Detroit Design Awards. Michael has proudly represented Arteva as sales manager, helping hundreds of clients bring their vision to life through personalized, high-quality construction. He considers Arteva’s architectural excellence and design-driven approach to be a perfect match for his own passion for aesthetics and urban planning.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Arteva Homes for 17 years, and I’m incredibly proud to see their work consistently recognized for excellence,” Michael says. “Being part of a team that values innovation and craftsmanship gives me the tools to better serve my clients.”
A Lake Orion native, Michael earned his marketing degree from Oakland University in 2009, followed by a master’s in urban design from Lawrence Technological University. His design sensibilities were nationally recognized when the Michigan Association of Planning awarded him for his Mid-Century Modern Design Guidelines manual, later adopted by the city of Southfield.
Michael’s work is consistently praised for being responsive, detail-oriented, and insightful. Clients describe him as a true professional who anticipates needs, communicates clearly, and adds measurable value throughout the transaction.
In addition to managing sales for Arteva, Michael offers strategic real estate services across metro Detroit and the Saugatuck/Holland area — from marketing and staging to buyer advocacy and investment consulting. His deep industry knowledge and network make him an ideal resource for homeowners, developers, and even fellow agents seeking expert collaboration. With over 786 followers and 500-plus connections on LinkedIn, Michael continues to grow his business by referral and reputation, always focused on offering elevated service. For homeowners looking to sell, buyers ready to build, or industry professionals searching for a trusted partner, Michael Mason delivers the experience, vision, and integrity today’s market demands.

SteveTempleton was a young carpenter in the 1970s who harbored a dream. Although he dedicated his days to the construction of homes and the refinement of his craft, he recognized that the construction of a house was not merely about the walls and rooftops; it was also about commitment to excellence, trust, and relationships. In 1980, he made a bold move and established Templeton Building Company, which would go on to become one of the most respected construction firms in Michigan.
Templeton Building Company has grown beyond Steve’s dreams in the last 45 years. A modest business that was initially driven by hard work and passion has since transformed into a premier building company that specializes in high-end custom homes, historical restorations, renovations, and home service.
Templeton Building Company is not merely a business; it is a family tradition. Ben Templeton, Steve’s son, joined the organization in 2005 following his graduation from Lawrence Technological University. Ben, like his father, is deeply passionate about client service and craftsmanship. Templeton Building Company has maintained its reputation as a reliable name in Michigan’s construction industry by embracing innovation and adhering to its core values, always putting customer service, quality, and employees above all else. The company has broadened its scope by establishing a dedicated service division for home maintenance. This ensures that clients receive exceptional care long after a project has been completed.
Templeton Building Company has further solidified its reputation as an industry leader by earning numerous accolades over the years. The organization was named a Big50 top remodeling company in the U.S. by Remodeling magazine, was recognized as HBA’s Remodeler of the Year, and was honored on a national level with the NAHB Remodelers Award for Entire Home Renovation. Ben has also received recognition, having been designated among Pro Remodeler magazine’s 40 Under 40 and honored as HBA’s Young Builder of the Year. His leadership is not limited to Templeton Building Company; he has been a member of the HBA board since 2010, he served as president in 2021 and 2022, he is currently a national delegate for the National Association of Home Builders, and he serves on the leadership council for the state HBA. “I was very fortunate to have a father that I could learn so much from, but beyond that, we are incredibly lucky to have a talented and dedicated team at TBC,” Ben says. “Any awards and honors we’ve received are a reflection of their hard work.”
Success in the field of home construction is not solely determined by accolades; it is also determined by the relationships that are established during the construction process. Templeton Building Company does not merely construct and renovate residences; the team establishes long-lasting relationships. They are currently constructing homes for their longtime, repeat clients as well as for the children and grandchildren of their clients. As Templeton Building Company looks ahead to the next chapter, the same commitment that initiated its existence 45 years ago will continue to influence its future. ■ Templeton Building Company

In northern Michigan’s exclusive real estate market, Brad Rellinger is the name discerning buyers and sellers trust. With over 30 years of experience and deep roots in the region, Brad has built a legacy defined by integrity, results, and highly personalized service.
As an associate broker with Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty and broker/ owner of Mackinac Island Realty, Brad offers a rare dual perspective — pairing global reach with hyperlocal expertise. Raised on Walloon Lake and a northern Michigan resident for more than three decades, he brings an insider’s knowledge of the area’s most coveted markets, from the shoreline estates of Lake Charlevoix to the quiet elegance of Petoskey and beyond.
Brad’s approach is personal, professional, and proven. Whether representing a one-of-a-kind waterfront estate, a charming island cottage, or a prime investment opportunity, he combines a client-first mindset with the ability to navigate complex transactions seamlessly. His reputation for going above and beyond has earned him a loyal clientele — many of whom are repeat clients or referrals.
“Real estate is not just a transaction,” Brad says. “It’s a gateway to a lifestyle. My role is to make that vision a reality.”
Through his affiliation with Sotheby’s International Realty, Brad’s listings receive unparalleled global exposure. Sellers benefit from being placed in front of a qualified, affluent audience. Buyers, meanwhile, gain access to exclusive inventory that’s often unavailable on public platforms.
What truly sets Brad apart is his ability to listen — and to tailor every step of the experience to meet his clients’ unique goals. It’s a rare balance of luxury service and down-to-earth authenticity.
As northern Michigan continues to attract buyers seeking both refuge and opportunity, Brad’s market insight, pricing strategy, and knowledge of regional nuances — such as waterfront regulations or island zoning — are more essential than ever.
Now, he’s playing a leading role in one of
the area’s most anticipated new developments: Village Heights at Bay Harbor. This boutique condominium community will feature five buildings, each with five thoughtfully designed residences offering elevated living, panoramic views, and modern convenience. Penthouses will boast rooftop terraces with the highest vantage points in Bay Harbor, overlooking the crystal-blue expanse of Little Traverse Bay.
Centrally located in the Marina District, Village Heights offers walkable access to fine dining, luxury boutiques, wine-tasting rooms, live entertainment, and the Great Lakes Center for the Arts — creating a seamless blend of resort-style living and vibrant community.
Brad’s expertise also extends across the water to Mackinac Island, one of the most
exclusive and tightly held real estate markets in the country. As the broker/owner of Mackinac Island Realty — the island’s top brokerage for nearly 40 years — he brings invaluable knowledge to a market where only 18% of the land is privately owned. From grand Victorian homes to downtown commercial gems, Brad helps clients navigate this unique environment with discretion and skill.
Whether you’re searching for a legacy lakefront estate, a luxury condo with resort amenities, or a rare opportunity on Mackinac Island, Brad Rellinger is the trusted adviser who brings vision, strategy, and results. ■
