CEWD Spotlights Spring 2026

Student: Ms. Arteaga

Employer: Center for Hope Services

In June 2025, Ms. Arteaga successfully transitioned from the Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program to be an Outreach Specialist/Office Manager, a permanent position at Center for Hope Services. She is currently working 24 hours per week and earning an annual salary of $35,360. This opportunity allows her to put into practice the skills she gained during the CHW program while gaining valuable professional experience in the health and human services field.

The Community Health Worker Program at Hostos allows students to earn up to 9 college credits, which can be applied toward a Community Health degree at Hostos Community College or a Public Health degree at SUNY Orange.

Center for Hope Services primarily provides services to older adults and addresses critical needs such as food insecurity and navigation of support resources. In her role, Ms. Arteaga is actively engaged in this important work, making a direct impact in the lives of individuals who rely on these services. This experience has been transformative in helping her secure stable employment and building her confidence to continue growing in her career.

Hostos CEWD is now offering NCCER Core and Level 1 Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing Introduction and Basic Construction Skills, which is a nationally recognized program that prepares individuals for entry-level jobs in the construction industry. This new offering caters to all skill levels through a comprehensive approach that includes hands-on training, industry-recognized certification, and pathways into skilled trades like electrical, welding, HVAC, and more.

Military Training and Occupations

The Hostos Education Dept. offers an exam, to students with paraprofessional experience in NYC DOE or childhood teaching. The Modern Languages Dept. offers exams for elementary language courses (FRE 101, ITA 101, SPA 101).

Credit is offered for military experience based on ACE recommendations, Joint Services Transcripts, DSST exams and the Defense Language Proficiency Test.

About the SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship will award up to forty (40) $1,500 full-time or $750 part-time scholarships to students who have previously completed a certificate training or adult learning program (GED/ESL classes) with Hostos CEWD and are now currently enrolled in a Hostos degree program.

3. Have completed at least one-semester of studies and have a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.5 or above at Hostos Community College.

4. Are currently enrolled at Hostos Community College in a degree program.

Career Success ScholarshipHelena Rubinstein

Since 2011, this scholarship, created through an endowment from the Helena Rubinstein Foundation, has provided recipients up to 90% of tuition costs for continuing education. It is awarded every Spring and Fall semester, is open to individuals who seek to advance their careers and cannot otherwise pay for tuition. Applicants may also be unemployed or seeking a career change.

Equivalency Diploma Credit for Qualifying Regents Examination Scores

As of April 25, 2018, the New York State Education Department provides an additional pathway to earn a New York GED® by allowing eligible GED® examinees to use passing scores on certain Regents Examinations in place of corresponding GED® subtests. Please call our office at 718-518-6656 for more information about applying for the Regents-GED® Examination pathway.

Students will prepare for the GED® examination by learning test-taking strategies in the five GED® content areas and practice sample questions similar to those on the State exam.

Students with limited English language skills will focus on building reading, writing and oral communication skills by practicing simple dialogues and conversations.

ESOL Low Intermediate

Students with English language skills will develop sentence, paragraph and essay writing. Focus will be on learning grammatical structures and using this knowledge within the writing context. There will be interactive class discussions on reading and writing strategies.

ESOL Intermediate Advanced

This course is designed for students who are experienced in English language and wish to strengthen their skills in order to master basic language structures. Instruction will focus on improving pronunciation, building fluency and accuracy and introducing students to the basics of essay writing. A Placement Exam is required.

Hostos Community Interpreter Training Program

Community interpreters give people a voice. In this program participants will develop essential skills in ethics, standards of practice, cultural competence, and interpreting techniques across a variety of community settings, including healthcare, education, and social services.

Topics include

> Effectively assist those with frustration and isolation

This 60-hour program is designed for bilingual individuals and includes 48-hrs. of community interpretation training and 12-hrs. of medical interpretation.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program gives you an excellent opportunity to acquire the necessary occupational and English literacy skills required for CNA.

CNAs benefit from the increase in longevity and changes in the healthcare system. This has created an increased need for educated and skilled CNAs. The CNA profession is ideal for people seeking work in nursing homes, hospitals, doctors’ offices and healthcare facilities.

The CNA Program includes:

Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

In this introductory course, students will learn the skills of a Phlebotomy Technician. This course includes a combination of theory and practical training.

Topics include:

> Standard precautions

> Collecting blood specimens

> Diagnosis and treatment

> Performing capillary punctures

Live venipunctures, conducted in class, will be a component of this course. Participating students and volunteer subjects must sign an “Acknowledgment of Risk” form.

Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certification exam. Two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving study skills to ensure your success in the classroom and in the field. The NHA exam fee is included in tuition. Medical & Allied Health

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Program

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) are dedicated to patient care management. Graduates of the program will be equipped to assist physicians examinations, treatments, take medical histories, vital signs, phlebotomies, EKG’s and other clinical procedures. Students will learn the HIPAA standards that ensure in the work place and patient privacy.

The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) Program combines 136-hrs. of classroom training along with an externship to prepare students for employment. The goal is to develop competent entry level medical assistants in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning domains.

Students will earn up to 2 college credits that can be applied toward an Associate Degree in Business/Office Technology.

Students will take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) exam on the last day of class (3-hr. exam). Two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving math skills relevant to the program. Textbook, supplies, CPR and CMA exam fee included in tuition. Uniforms are not included in the tuition.

Your Path to Becoming a Patient Care Technician

Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate

The Patient Care Technician is a multi-disciplinary technical worker trained to provide basic nursing assistant care as well as other skilled functions. The role of the Patient Care Technician includes duties traditionally performed by the staff from several different components.

Class components include:

This program builds upon the basic nursing aid skills. Students completing the program can take the certification exam from the

Certified Home Health Aide Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Certified Home Health Aide (HHA) Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a No-cost program. HHA is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge and practical skills to assist patients with daily living activities and basic routine care. Textbook is included in tuition.

These activities include:

> Assistance with eating

> Hygiene: brushing teeth, showering, and more

> Administering medications

> Changing dressings and bandages

> Moderating temperature and pulse rate

HHAs can work in:

> Private homes

> Continuing care facilities

> Nursing homes and assisted living centers

Course hours include 85-hrs. of classroom time which includes 1-hr. study skills, plus 5-hrs. of CPR training.

Professional Development and Study Abroad Program

The Summer Professional Development Program on the education of Dominicans is an international teacher training offered by Hostos Community College in collaboration with New York City CUNY colleges, New York City public schools, CBO-Cultural Centers and Higher Learning Institutions, and the Ministry of Education in the Dominican Republic.

Curriculum Design and Transformative

Experiences

Classes emphasize art, history, and culture, as well as the education of Dominicans and other ELL children. Working in groups, participants collaborate to create projects and develop curriculum for their students. The course culminates in project presentations that include discussions on learned experiences, curriculum design, and activities tailored to the student population. Former participants developed innovative curricula on gender, race, ethnicity, and identity. Discussions included the immigrant experience of English language learners.

Exploration of effective teaching strategies and best practices across all academic subjects. Alumni have lauded the program as a life-long transformative experience that will inform their work as educators for years to come.

The program culminates with a mini-symposium. Presenters show case their projects. Afterwards, attendees who complete the Continuing Teacher and Leader Education Program* receive a certificate.

The group travels to the Dominican Republic for a 10-day program that includes cultural and academic enrichment training. They receive lectures and workshops from faculty members of international institutions. The program offers site visits to public schools, the National Palace, cultural centers, museums, art galleries, and historical sites.

This program is funded by the New York State Education Department and serves over 300 students annually from high schools in the South Bronx, including Hostos Lincoln Academy of Science (HLAS), Health High School (HOPS), Community School for Social Justice (CSSJ) and I.S. 584 Middle School.

The student body is diverse, primarily consisting of Latinos and African Americans. The program provides special attention to students who are at risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency.

We combine academic support and career awareness with nonacademic activities, while also providing tutoring, exam prep, and college/career exploration.

The Spring 2026 Seminar Series celebrates Latin music, Latin jazz, and those who helped create it from the 1930s to the present.

Many artists influenced the creation of Latin music & Latin jazz, including the great Tito Puente. Explore other musicians including Graciela (“The First Lady of Latin Jazz”), Ceila Cruz, Olga Guiott, Gloria Estefan, Enrique Jorrin, Johnny Rodriquez, Julio Gutiérrez, and more.

You will gain a deeper understanding of the genre and how music has changed.

Joe Conzo Sr., noted music historian, producer and author of Mambo Diablo: My Journey with Tito Puente hosts the History of Latin Music & Latin Jazz seminar series.

The Tito Puente Exhibit is housed at Hostos Community College and is available for viewing.

Registration Fee

There is a non-refundable $25 processing and administrative fee per person, one-time per semester.

Tuition and Fees

Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students are not considered officially registered until they have completed their tuition payments. We do not offer payment plans. To attend any course, you must pay the tuition in full before the start of class. We cannot accept personal checks. Most courses require the purchase of books.

Session Guarantee

Bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a class session. For bad weather cancellation information, please check the college website hostos.cuny.edu or call Public Safety at 718-518-6888. We guarantee that the number of sessions and/or number of hours specified for each course will be allotted.

Payment

Payment is required at time of registration. Any unpaid registrations will be cancelled one week prior to the class start date. Payment can be made online or by phone. We accept major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express).

Refund/Withdrawal

A request for a refund must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt. Lack of attendance does not constitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund. There will be a 100% refund if a class is cancelled by the College. Registration fees are non-refundable unless class is cancelled by the College.

> To get at 100% tuition refund, your request must be made in writing before the first day of class.

> If you drop 3 calendar days after the first day of class, you will receive a 75% refund.

> If you drop 7 calendar days after the first day of class, you will get a 50% refund.

Allow 3-5 weeks for refund/credit processing. If you drop the class 8 or more calendar days after the first day of class, you are not eligible for a refund.

Changes in Programs

The Continuing Education Department reserves the right to cancel courses, make substitutions in faculty, and change the days, times, and locations of classes, if necessary. We are not responsible for misprints in catalogs, brochures, and/or advertisements. In the event of an error, we will make every effort to provide you with the correct information. All courses depend on sufficient registration to operate. If a course is cancelled by the College, all registrants will receive a full refund.

Course Cancellation

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. When courses are canceled, students may transfer to another course or receive a full refund. All efforts will be made to contact students in the event of a course cancellation.

Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities

For prospective students that are interested in a Hostos Continuing Education course or program, requests for reasonable accommodation must be accompanied by documentation of disability which will help us evaluate the limitations of the disability and determine an appropriate reasonable accommodation. Students should submit requests and documentation to program coordinators as soon as possible and no later than two weeks prior to the class start date.

We will review and evaluate the request and arrange for a reasonable accommodation that would be appropriate.

Adaptaciones para personas con discapacidades

Para los futuros estudiantes que estén interesados en un curso y programa de Educación Continua de Hostos, las solicitudes de adaptaciones razonables deben ir acompañadas de documentación de discapacidad que nos ayudará a evaluar las limitaciones de la discapacidad y determinar una adaptación razonable adecuada. Los estudiantes deben presentar las solicitudes y la documentación a los coordinadores del programa lo antes posible y a más tardar dos semanas antes de la fecha de inicio de la clase. Revisaremos

y evaluaremos la solicitud y organizaremos una adaptación razonable que sea apropiada.

Las solicitudes de adaptaciones razonables (con la documentación adjunta de discapacidad) deben presentarse antes de inscribirse en cualquier clase o programa. Los coordinadores delprograma se comunicarán para proporcionar información sobre el estado de las solicitudesde adaptaciones razonables.
