MICECON 2023 heralds tourism growth

In hosting the biggest gathering of MICE professionals in the country, the City of Davao has proven that it has all what it takes to be a business events hotspot in Mindanao.

Attended by 640-plus local and international delegates, the Philippine MICE Conference (MICECON) 2023, held at SMX Convention Center Davao from March 1 to 3, was organized by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) in tandem with the Davao Organizing Committee composed of private and public sector representatives.

The Filipino brand of service permeated MICECON 2023, from the warm welcome at the airport and entertainment numbers to fam tours and departure. As TPB chief operating ofcer Marga Nograles explained: “We believe that by providing exceptional service, and going above and beyond for all our visitors, we can provide tourism experiences that exceed expectations.”

The conference proper was packed with timely topics with huge doses of fun, creativity and innovations.

With the theme MICE Converge: Blaze New Trails, speakers and panelists tackled wide-ranging topics, among them leveraging technology in planning events; character and skills necessary for the new breed of leaders; thinking globally and acting locally in the circular economy of events; and new normal disruptors on the supplier side of business events.

These serious topics were injected with serious fun including a workshop on easy glam make up fx for industry divas and another on power dressing using Philippine textiles and weaves.

To encourage audience participation, sub-themes in celebration of Nature, Diversity, and Travel and Technology were introduced daily and repeated in the venue decor, daily dress code, entertainment and intermissions.

The CSR component is a nod to sustainability and ecotourism. Delegates visited the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Davao City, to raise awareness and funds in the preservation and conservation of the critically-endangered species.

MICECON 2023 also held the Philippine MICE Youth Challenge, which aims to train the future leaders of the industry and give them the chance to compete in the Asia MICE Youth Challenge of the AFECA (Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations).

Another innovation was the MICECON Marketplace consisted of 66 exhibitors. Davao is an underrated destination but the exhibition faunted the new tourism hardware and varied culture, heritage and culinary oferings not just of the City but also of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur.

MICECON 2023 also showcases Davao’s bleisure oferings with tours of the city, indigenous tribes, islands to highland adventure travel opportunities and key resort and beach destinations.

These include the Kadayawan adventure feting delegates to the native dwellings and livelihoods of the 11 tribes of Davao; a trip to the Poblacion Market noted for its diverse shopping, dining and lifestyle oferings; full island experience at the Pearl Farm in Samal Island; boat ride to the Lubi Plantation Resort Island; and chocolate and cheese tasting experience at worldrenowned Malagos Farmhouse Cheeses.

As Philippine vice president Sara Duterte said in the farewell dinner, MICECON 2023 is an opportunity for Davao City, “considered one of the safest cities in the world,” to showcase one of the tourism gateways in Mindanao by “ofering

visitors a complete tourism experience through the convergence of culture, nature and adventure”.

Coming as it was after two years of pandemic, tourism secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said “MICECON 2023 serves as a venue for us to reinvigorate and revitalize the tourism industry, and Davao has become a model for others to follow and a springboard from which we can launch even more exciting MICECONs in the future”.

Clark Freeport Zone, which won the bid to host MICECON 2024, is sure to take Davao’s lead. Said Agnes Devanadera, president and CEO of Clark Development Corp., said: “Just as Davao has shown us the way to transform MICECON into an impetus of sustainable development, Clark shall follow suit and bring forth inclusive growth not just for Clark but for Region 3”.

Marriott expands in PH

Marriott International expands its footprints in the Philippines with the introduction of three brands this year - The Westin, Four Points by Sheraton, and Fairfeld by Sheraton.

After the launch of 303key The Westin Manila in Ortigas in early March, coming up in the third quarter are 146-key Fairfeld by Sheraton in Mandaue, Cebu and the rebranding and extensive renovation of Sheridan Beach Resort and Spa in Sabang, Palawan into 250-key Four Points by Sheraton.

Prior to this, the hotel

management company has three of its 30 brands planted in six Philippine hotels: Sheraton (in Newport World Resorts, Malate in Manila and its frst resort in Mactan which debuted last September), Marriott (in Newport World Resorts and Clark), and Courtyard by Marriott in Iloilo City.

The expansion has been a long time coming, said Bruce Winton, Marriott International’s multi-property vice president in the Philippines. “These things don’t happen overnight. Marriott has always had a very strong brand presence even though we

don’t have a lot of hotels.

“Everybody is familiar with our brands so that makes things easier,” he said, adding that there are further expansion in the pipeline, including a second The Westin in Clark.

He’s also eyeing adding the Autograph Collection, a “softer brand” within the Marriott International portfolio for independently-owned and operated upscale properties.

Winton is also looking at new projects in Boracay as well as in Davao and General Santos City in Mindanao.

Ascott brands make its presence felt

The Ascott Limited (Ascott) recently announced during its Ascott Mingle event its signifcant expansion plans and opening of 1,400 units across eight properties for 2023.

“We are excited to continue expanding across the Philippines and ofering guests a range of world-class properties to choose from,” said Philip Barnes, the Country General Manager of The Ascott Limited Philippines.

Barnes said the new projects will add 3,000 units, bringing the company’s portfolio to 5,800 units across 29 properties in the next fve years.

With these growing portfolios across the Philippines, the new addition will allow guests to experience the country’s diverse landscape and vibrant culture while enjoying the brands’ signature hospitality.

In his presentation, Barnes mentioned the following properties to open this year.

couples on holiday exploring the city of myriad lifestyle options including dining, entertainment, cultural and ftness and wellness establishments.

Opening August is lyf Cebu City located within the same complex as Citadines Cebu City, the property features 233 welldesigned apartments that cater

to the needs of millennials and young professionals.

Next to open in September are Citadines Bacolod City, a serviced residence with 200 spacious apartments with modern amenities and furnishings, the property features 3 F&B outlets and function halls and a ballroom

that can ft a maximum of 800 guests; and, Citadines Roces Quezon City with 200 units located in the area that ofers a wealth of interesting sights, popular retail and dining concepts and proximity to shopping malls.

Somerset Valero Makati will be opened in October. It consists of 182 units located in Salcedo Village where the popular upscale neighborhood is known for its sense of community, as well as its well-maintained parks and green spaces.

December is Somerset Gorordo Cebu, a 157 fully furnished serviced apartments ranging from studios to twobedroom units, is designed to cater to the needs of both short and long-term guests.

Barnes also mentioned that the Oakwood acquisition last year made sense because it allowed them to extend the growth of their brands.

“Obviously, it’s not the brand that will come out charging and growing by sixes and eights. It is a brand that attracts the U.S. market and we will select it according to the market that it can break in.”

It’s all about the want

In this issue, we feature our frst integrated resort, Hann Resorts in Clark. Writing about hotels of different brands and styles, a humongous casino and its restaurants, a deft coverage can take some time but it only took us about a day and a half with the assistance of top management who were eager to show us around the complex.

Hann Resorts is spearheading the big developments that Clark will showcase in the near future. It is what’s going on in the region — from Macau’s Cotai strip to Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, with Vietnam’s own integrated resorts in Danang and Hoi An. We are glad that Dae Sik Han is pursuing his vision of Clark as a gateway to the Philippines and that we can compete with the rest of the world given the right infrastructure.

When DOT busies itself with just waiting for good feedback from travel magazines before giving notice to deserving destinations that they overlook because of political motivations, the private sector pursues what tourists want from a destination. They attend the most important B2B events, sometimes forming their own sales blitzes abroad, are attentive to trends, and create needs.

A point in mind is cruising.

After all the credit grabbing and chest beating, it’s still the country’s private sector and natural wonders that save tourism. Cruises are increasing their visits to our islands. Well, not the humongous, mass tourism kind yet but the small and medium-sized ships flled with adventurers and expeditions who go and take their fll of our unique fora and fauna and leave happy and satisfed, grateful to the Philippines for being part of their memorable journey. They depart without leaving their trash, even contributing some funds to the communities they visit, nothing of the kind mass tourism gives us with all the trash and nonchalance. These new destinations are borne from the cruise companies themselves who travel to the country and along with local tour operators to study what would be of interest to their passengers.

Ships like The Coral Adventurer, Swan Hellenic Minerva, Heritage Adventurer, Seven Seas Explorer, among others, carry passengers who aim to explore our fora and fauna, our marine life; and just to

point out that the Philippines is one of 18 mega biodiverse countries in the world, the frst in the region. Statistics from the Convention on Biological Diversity say that we contain 70-80% of the world’s plant and animal species and rank 5th in the number of plant species and maintain 5% of the world’s fora. This attracts the kind of tourist that will come back time and again, bringing their peers and friends and yet, are conscious about global issues and help out with whatever assistance they can give to the local communities they visit.

Of course there are the superships like Royal Caribbean, Cunard, etc. that will visit their usual ports in Manila and Ilocos, even Bohol.These are the guys who like big port facilities but can visit smaller ports because they have small boats they can “tender”. The ships can carry thousands in a single visit but the passengers are of a different mindset, hence, are offered shore excursions ft for their want.

Either way, the Philippines is in the radar of cruise companies that have not paid us any attention before. It is up to us to sustain and maintain.

By the way, does the DOT know what tourists want from our country? What are visitor expectations? Admittedly, if we just want to increase the numbers just to crow about where our taxes are being spent, then we just follow the playbook and go leisure and business travel. But savvy travelers today only put leisure as a part of a holistic experience. There is the learning experience or “discovery” part, things they can brag about — the unexpected, the pleasant surprise, that feeling of being uniquely involved in seeing a bird, tasting a dish, meeting new friends who genuinely like you, going out to drink tasteful beer for less than a dollar. That is only the beginning….

They will want that again, tell their friends about it, and then they will return.

Accor holds accord “ALL Thanks To You” in Philippines, Southeast Asia

Accor launched its “ALL Thanks to You” via a media event held at The Long Bar at Fairmont Hotels in Makati. This was in conjunction with planned sales blitzes in Accor’s regional sales ofces in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam to say All Thanks To You to its trade, sales and business partners in Southeast Asia.

General Managers, Hotel Managers, and key executives of 10 Accor hotels and resorts joined representatives of media outfts engaged in business, travel and tourism, and foreign publications with Kash Salvador, Accor’s Director of Development.

The Philippines is a key market for Accor and the group is heavily focused on expanding its presence in the country. Accor sees the Philippines as a uniquely diverse global destination with a strong combination of fast paced urban lifestyle.

“In the Philippines, ACCOR is the leading international hotel operator with a total of 10 hotels, resorts and brand

residences and happy to say that Accor furthermore committed a pipeline of 16 more hotels equivalent to 2,994 keys scheduled to open within the next 5 years. These include Softel Cebu, Mercure Downtown Cebu, Softel Clark, Emblems Clark, Banyan Tree Clark, Angsana Clark, Mercure Clark, Ibis Style Araneta, among others,” Salvador said.

He also mentioned the recent signing of Accor’s partnership with South Palms Resort Panglao in building the frst MGallery resort in Bohol.

Westin makes a comeback

Westin Hotels and Resorts, a part of Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of 30 prime hotel brands,announced the opening of The Westin Manila in Mandaluyong City, partnering with Robinsons Land Corporation.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Dennis Andreaci, the Senior Vice President for Casino Operations, and Tarek Aouini, the Vice President for Hotel Operations, about their roles and the future of Hann Resorts in their hands. It’s clear that they are passionate about delivering unforgettable experiences to their guests and continuing to raise the bar in the leisure and hospitality industry.

Andreaci’s journey to becoming a prominent fgure in the casino industry was far from easy but it was certainly flled with adventure. Born in New Jersey, U.S.A, he grew up in a family of casino enthusiasts. Even during his formative years, Andreaci was already familiar with the ins and outs of the industry. In fact, he even recalled his younger siblings spending many hours learning casino games and the mathematics behind them while he was busy pursuing his degree.

It was no surprise that Andreaci ultimately found his calling in the casino industry. His vast knowledge and experience in the feld have led him to become a sought-after consultant, ofering his expertise in various global projects, including government work concerning regulatory compliance for both players and stakeholders.

But Andreaci’s capabilities extend far beyond his involvement in building casinos. Entering New Markets

As the one of frst Americans to enter the Asian casino industry, and the frst non-Macau citizen to work in a casino, Andreaci faced many challenges. But his passion and dedication to building successful casino businesses for investors kept him going, knowing he had the expertise to succeed.

And succeeded he did. His competence is evident in every major casino we’ve heard of in our lifetime, from Atlantic City to Asia. The Sands Macau, Marina Bay Sands, The Venetian Macau, Galaxy Macau, and Solaire all bear his name as a common denominator.

But for Andreaci, building a casino isn’t just about proft. It’s about building lives. He believes that hiring and training thousands of people in the industry is just as important as the fnancial success of a casino. In his career, he hired thousands of people, many of whom are now executives in their own

right, from places like the Philippines, Malaysia, and even locals from Macau.

“In the Americas, casinos are frequented by tourists for the experience, in Asia it’s a more serious game of winning,” he revealed. “The good thing about it is when everything is said and done, all these beautiful places will tell you the same thing.”

‘‘At the end of the day, my proudest achievement is not the billions of dollars made, but the fact that I was able to provide opportunities for people from all over the world to succeed and thrive in the casino industry.’’

The Philippine Gaming Scene

In his statement, Andreaci refects on his experience in building successful casino ventures such as Solaire in the Philippines and Hann Resorts. He explains how marketing and building an exceptional guest experience were crucial in overcoming initial challenges and achieving critical mass in these ventures.

Comparing Hann Resorts to Sands in Macau, Andreaci envisions Hann Resorts as the generator of capital for future expansions. He emphasizes the importance of experience and service quality in running a successful casino, even if revenue may not match that of Manila’s Entertainment City due to the latter’s proximity to a larger

Accor is expanding its MGallery brand in the Philippines with the signing of South Palms Resort Panglao BoholMGallery. This will be the frst MGallery resort-style property in the country joining a strong pipeline of 16 committed projects.

The 188-key South Palms Resort Panglao BoholMGallery is part of the Panglao Shores township project of the Alturas Group of Companies (AGC). It is also a new addition to the 78-room and villas of the existing South Palms Resort Panglao. branded hotels and resorts, all set in the 1 kilometer beachfront. Panglao Shores is about engagement with the community, not just with tourists. 500 residential units are planned in the future. The structures will only allow 4-story buildings. It will also have port facilities for cargo and cruise ships.

According to Bill Burnett of C9 Hotelworks, the major consultant of the project, Panglao Shores will be a generational business meaning it will last for generations, sustainable because energy saving measures are built into the project.

The Uy family are into a lot of businesses. The chairman and patriarch who built AGC has a number of businesses composed of Marcela Farms, Alturas Supermarket Corporation, Island City Mall in Tagbilaran, South Palms Resort Panglao, South Farm, Leonardo Distributors Inc., Bohol Tech Vocational, Inc. and North Zen Villas, Panglao, among others. The company also produces the famous Peanut Kisses, a famous delicacy In Bohol.

The South Farm, a 9-hectare organic land, is committed to sustainability and provide the daily supply requirements of South Palm Resort. It has organic, herbal, and medical gardens; a Fisherman’s Village where shrimp, tilapia, and bangus are cultivated to supply the property and nearby communities; and, the Artist’s village where the Boholano’s artistry and craft making such as clay-making, basket weaving, and coco products like oil, vinegar are showcased.

Panglao Shores development signals the acceleration of tourism in terms of contribution to the economy and creating jobs as well. Uy said that as poverty is a problem in Bohol, South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol - MGallery and Panglao Shores will be contributors to the economy. GM Vanessa Suatengco refecting the intent to achieve

It was a sparkling new beginning of the year 2023 for Diamond Hotel Philippines as Diamond Hotel Philippines General Manager Vanessa Suatengco was one of the awardees of the illustrious Asian CEO Awards 2022, where awards are given to individuals who have made a positive contribution to the development of the economic capabilities and international reputation of Philippines through their employment, business involvement or heritage.

Asia CEO Awards is one of the largest events of its kind in South East Asia. Vanessa Suatengco, GM of Diamond Hotel Manila, who received multiple prestigious awards in the tourism industry herself, was extremely proud to be selected as one of the awardees in the Global Filipino Executive of the Year Circle of Excellence category. The award was given during the Gala Night attended by around a thousand top level executives of diferent local and multinational corporations.

It is even more signifcant for CEOs and awardees, who are used to receive awards regularly in their professional career, to be recognized based

on what they achieved in times of crisis. Suatengco was the only hotelier, and an independent hotel at that, was awarded among several respected organizations from industries such as banking, retail, real estate, manufacturing and transportation. To win an award that celebrates a collective impact was a proud achievement for Diamond Hotel, competing against the best who have toiled on during the pandemic.

When quarantine period became compulsory for returning Filipinos and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Diamond Hotel supported the Department of Tourism in accepting and

ofering hotel accommodations. The hotel was issued the Travel Safe Pass and Safe Stays badge.

The hotel pivoted their service and worked as a team to ensure the implementation of proper hygiene and sanitation protocols. Installed were flters for the air-con, the UV flters, chemicals for cleaning, separate garbage, including added equipment like ion-charged steam meant for the entire hotel, acrylic barriers and sanitation of other areas.

How did the hotel sustain operations and still make money?

According to Suatengco, it could be the way they kept the hotel afoat and remained in the black throughout the pandemic that could have impressed the judges because it was no mean feat even for the other hotels. “They looked at our fnancials and they saw that we did not lose money despite the situation, we were positive and able to manage our fnances,” she confded.

For the F&B, the team went creative online and conceptualized diferent menus to attract their regular patrons. Platters, rice bowls at the

cheapest price were ofered, and they sold like hot cakes. They even made some proft from online sales because people had no places to eat.

The key was to ofer variety. Their Japanese was a hit like baked sushi. Another innovative dining ofer was the Park & Dine. Since senior citizens and children were not allowed to dine in then, through Park & Dine they were able to enjoy their favorite Diamond dishes at the comfort of their vehicles and they were given space at the front drive of the hotel.

For the quarantined guests, they capitalized on inexpensive, afordable, street food which they have missed—turon, lugaw, guinatan, etc. At one time, one of the corners of the hotel was transformed to a pasalubong corner for the time when quarantined guests especially the OFWs check out.

Even in the post pandemic that Suatengco believes is a recovery phase, Diamond Hotel continues its plans derailed by the pandemic. Refurbishing and improving with a priority on sustainability, ensuring that they adapt to any change and keeping their guests’ best interest at heart.

HSMA-PHILTOA collab - a convenient partnership

Two national associations, the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA) and the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) partnership is seen as a game changer in the travel trade ecosystem and have just showcased a Travel Exchange (TravEx), one of the workable projects envisioned by them to spur domestic tourism growth in the country.

The B2B event attracted 87 hotel sellers and 115 tour operators held at the Marriotts MGBx recently.

The partnership is a frst for both HSMA and PHILTOA, which saw ft to merge their organizations together to also further help industry players afected by the pandemic recover and restart their businesses.

“We wanted it to be bigger and stronger this year considering we already took of last year. This is the perfect year to start it when every aspect is returning well and travel is very strong. The message we want to put out is that we need each other and we can function better together rather than on our own,” said Loleth So, HSMA president and area director of Sales & Marketing, Belmont & Savoy Hotel Manila (Megaworld Hotels & Resorts).

HSMA Vice President Christina S. Carreon echoed the sentiment by emphasizing the value of unity among travel and hospitality frontliners.

“We are using this platform to unite and have one voice.

We are in the recovery stage and being united is important because the market is volatile, some may push up and some will pull down. We want a high impact because everybody in tourism sufered, especially MICE stakeholders. We have to

signal the good news of 2023 by being proactive and making noise, not waiting for the government to act frst.”

HSMA has 130 member hotels while PHILTOA has 432 members composed of regular and allied members.

TravEx opened the window for these agents and tour operators who, despite having their domestic packages, didn’t have access or linkages to the hotels and resorts that could promote them in the destinations.

While most tour operators cater to the corporate market, TravEx opens the opportunity for hotels to ofer their business meetings and social events packages.

According to Margie Munsayac, AHRM chair, around 10M pesos in sales were transacted last year during its launch that included multiple government accounts that

HSMA did not know about. This gumption is seen to provide added value to a HSMA and PHILTOA membership. When a member of any association mostly looks forward to attending GMMs, there is now an added interest of having a working relationship in a collaboration.

Fe-Abling-Yu, PHILTOA president, stated that the TravEx was held in a perfect venue to really get to know one another especially for those coming from the provinces.

“As an association, we really want to help our tour operators, especially those who are just starting and don’t know whom to talk to on the hotel side of things, during the pandemic, these operators really grew the local market – everybody learned to sell domestically.” Yu added.

Bullish about the cooperation, Rose Libongco, Virtus Awards chair, the collab as a prelude to a wider diversity to cover more ground to include other travel related associations like airlines as Munsayac revealed that even in International shows like ITCMA and ITB Asia, they meet Filipino buyers for the frst time.

The PHILTOA partnership and the Travel Exchange are new additions to HSMA’s annual roster of exciting activities, the most famous of which is the group’s fagship September Online Sale (S-O-S)—also established as a response to the impact of the pandemic on travel and tourism. Also coming up this year is the 9th HSMA Virtus Awards, the most prestigious recognition given to outstanding sales and marketers of the group’s member hotels and resorts.

Being led to your seat, you see the Risotto station, the Bouillabaisse soup station beside the fresh seafood spread and you rate it a 5-star already without even tasting it yet.

You order your drinks and, surprise, you remain in your seat because the frst of multiple hors d’oeuvres (pass-around) with complimentary wine pairing are being served and you don’t want to miss out on that

foie de gras, the lobster with caviar, and the creamy trufed angel hair pasta.

With most of her experience growing in the revenue, rooms operations and F&B of numerous beach resorts all over the world, she said “you can never tell how your day is going to end”. As a certifed Island girl, she said “you take things like how the shores welcome the waves of the sea. You can never control it, but you can always make the most out of it”.

Waving the fagship of the largest homegrown hospitality management brand, she confdently attests that “We Filipinos are known to be hospitable and are a happy people. As someone who hails from celebrated brands, Bernabe afrms that “MHR’s structural pillars are in place and steps are being taken to further improve and strengthen the organization to support further growth.” In her line of experience, Bernabe has served leadership roles with brands like Pearl Farm Beach Resort, Century International Hotels, Marco Polo Davao, Novotel Garden Plaza Saigon, Movenpick Saigon, Discovery Shores and so much more.

When asked if there’s one thing all women should look forward to each day, she said “Have the chance to greet another day with a smile, be able to make a diference in the lives of others as much as you inspire them to bring the good forward.”
