In a news conference we asked coach Sarkisian, “Bijan cuts like Barry Sanders, explodes like Ricky Williams, stiff arms like Derrick Henry. Are these fair comparisons and what is it like being Bijan’s coach?”

Sarkisian said, we just need to add Walter RobinsonPayton.

When Sarkisian, and all the players, speak of Bijan Robinson they all say, he’s a better human than football player. Before every game, Robinson calls his family and, as a family, prays together.

5

All the players, coaches, and staff at Texas are amazing, so it would be hard to stand out and be even more amazing. #5 Bijan Robinson is a light that brings great joy, calm, peace, and love everywhere he goes.

tells the story that Sarkisian tried to recruit him when he was in high school to play for Alabama, but had to be honest with Sarkisian that his heart was in Texas.

We will never forget the time after a game up in the players room where the news conference was held with Sarkisian and a few players. After Robinson was finished talking with the press he left the room and waited around for another 15 minutes out by the stairs that lead out of the complex and stopped us, shook our hand and said, “Thank you for being here. I appreciate you.”

Immediately after the end of last season, Sarkisian left the college sports world speechless. Before the season ended, Sarkisian said that Texas would likely add up to 38 new players, and possibly more from the transfer portal.

Texas announced they were moving to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Sarkisian commented early that in order to compete at that level, Texas would need BIG OnHUMANS.Dec.12, 2021, the first day studentathletes were allowed to sign their National

Sarkisian commented that during some of his off time he was going to travel and go catch a baseball game. That game was 511 miles East of DKR.

Sarkisian becomes the King. All of the sudden, it was as if last season was truly in the rearview mirror, even though every news conference someone brings up the past.

Ewers, being the highest rated QB out of high school since Vince Young, suggested that there was either something most fans and pundits did not understand or know about Sarkisian, his staff, and the Texas ESPNprogram.ranked

Texas with the top 5th class in CFB, signing 32 players, one five-star, 21 four-star, and five three-star players, and Sarkisian was not finished.

Sarkisian, in a news conference during this period made a comment nobody picked up on that would end up being monumental, actually earth shattering for Texas.

Then Sarkisian, at the beginning of summer, travels to Los Angeles and spends time with Super Bowl winning head coach Sean McVay. Sarkisian’s take away was how forward-thinking offensive coach McVay interacted with players and his relationship with the team and his ability to understand all aspects of his team.

This caused a complete 180 in everyone’s attitude toward Sarkisian and Texas.

Spring training started and once again the battle of quarterbacks begins. Fans are left wondering who will be the starting quarterback come fall? Hudson Card or Quinn Ewers? As the team, one-third new, was working hard and summer practice was about to end, Sarkisian announced that Quinn Ewers would be Texas QB1 without fanfare, no news conference, and if you had not been there when the announcement was made, you would not believe it was true.

Sarkisian then brings on coach Brennan Marion as the wide receiver coach and coach Tashard Choice as the running backs coach, both with NFL experience. Players have the highest praises for these two coaches and are appreciative for what they have taught them already and the energy they

This meeting with McVay reminded Sarkisian to stay the course and to be true to himself and his style of leadership.

It was announced in such a chill fashion that everyone

defense needed help last season, so Sarkisian had Pete Kwiatkowski meet with Dan Quinn who has a known superpower: Defense. Quinn was the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons and now is the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

What happened was, after a summer practice, several players sat down with the media. Afterward, the Texas sports information director nonchalantly walks in and announces from the podium that Sarkisian is making Quinn Ewers the starting quarterback.

Back to the baseball game Sarkisian attended. That game, plus other relationship building events would land a Texas commit that has never before happened. Sarkisian becomes the King of CFB.

Texas’ coach staff led by example. They evaluated what went right, what went wrong, and then learned from that, got coached themselves, and made adjustments.

So we have QB1, we know with a of certainty that Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson will be running backs, Xavier will be wide receiver, Quinn Ewers will be and DeMarvion O vershown be the linebacker. Moro Ojomo and Keondre Coburn will be on the Texas.

Christian Jones

Fifth-year offensive lineman Christian Jones from Cypress, Texas is a towering presence standing six feet six inches and weighing 333 lbs. Part of the Sarkisian’s Big Human line, Jones has played in 37 games, earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors in 2021, named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team in 2020, and is a member of the UT’s 2021-2022 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Junior wide receiver from Cuero, Texas is one of the coolest people you may ever meet. While we only know him from press conferences and player media, Whittington is an ol’ soul.

Whittington has graduated, is working on a second degree and is a weapon on offense when called upon. His career at Texas he played in 12 games, caught 12 passes for 519 yards, scored three touchdowns and averages 12.7 yards per carry.

On Whittington’s Instagram page (@yaton_ excluse) you will find the words, “Servant of Christ” along with his email, and his Cameo link for fans who wish to engage with him.

Last season Whittington suffered a seasonending injury. During his time away from the field he refocused and got hyper serious about his body and nutrition, also limiting ice cream to only one day a week.

18

Soft-spoken, confident, yet seemingly shy, Whittington is a student of football and a leader. Coach Sarkisian has said you will find him in the front row with a notebook and pen to take notes during team meetings.

Whittington is a key contributor to the Texas offense. He can catch, block, make big play and he leads by example.

The University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) will travel 436 miles West to Austin, Texas to play the Texas Longhorns at DKR for the first game of the 2022 season. This will be the second time ULM has played Texas. The first time was in 2009 and Texas won 59-20. Terry Bowden became the head coach in 2021 and the team had a 4-8 record in 2021 after going 0-10 in COVID year 2020.

Head Coach: Terry Bowden

This game will be a good warm up for Texas to identify areas they need to improve when they play a pivotal game against Alabama the following week.

University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks

One of the Warhawks most valuable weapons according to Bowden is placekicker Calum Sutherland who transferred from Oklahoma and can make 50-yard field goals with ice in his veins.

on 179 attempts for 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns in 2021.

Sophomore Chandler Rogers was named the starting quarterback for their season opener against Texas after winning the spot over Jiya Wright. Rogers, a Mansfield, Texas native, is 6’ 190 lbs., completed 112 passes

a more veteran and proven team across all areas: of fense, defense, special teams. Challenges for Texas will be to stop Bryce Young, 2021 Heisman Trophy winner and ranked the No. 1 player in CFB. Young was recruited and trained by Sarkisian along with AJ Milwee, however that may give Texas more insight than just watching tape on Young.

Alabama Crimson Tide Head Coach: Nick Saban

For Texas, this game is pivotal and will reveal their strengths and weaknesses going up against the No. 1 ranked Alabama and answer a big question on everyone’s mind. Can Texas compete in SEC?

Alabama has the No. 7 ranked defense led by #31 Will ANderson Jr., the 2021 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner for the nation’s top defensive player.

2525

This may be the most anticipated game of college football this season. Sarkisian goes head-to-head with his former boss and mentor. Sarkisian recruited and coached Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Former NFL coach Bill O’Brien is the OC/ QB for Alabama. Texas is going to the SEC and this game will provide insights.

Most people likely believe Alabama will beat Texas. Horns Illustrated believes Texas has a legitimate chance of winning against Alabama, although Texas will have a battle royale and many things have to go perfectly for AlabamaTexas.is

Bill O’Brien, who took over for Sarkisian as of fensive coordinator and QB coach, will be calling plays for Alabama. O’Brian previously was the head coach of the NFL Texans and was in the New England Patriots organization from 2007-2011 coaching Tom Brady.

Alabama may be Texas’ toughest opponent this season.

The history against Alabama goes back to the first game 1902 where Texas won 10-0. The teams have played nine times, last in 2010 when Alabama won 37-21 (their only win against Texas). Texas leads the overall series 7-1-1.

26

Nick Saban said during media days, “ This is my 21st season in the SEC. A lot of great memories, a lot of relationships that have been built and memories that are going to be cherished for a long, long time.”

2727

Senior Frank Harris will be a challenge for Texas. Last year he passed for 3,177 yards, 27 touchdowns, rushed for 1,479 yards and 15 touchdowns. Harris was named to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award which also has Bryce Young Jr. of Alabama and Spencer Sanders, Sr. of Oklahoma State.

Senior center Ahofitu Maka from Honolulu Hawaii provides massive protection for Harris. He is 6’3” 325 lbs and has allowed just one sack and three hits on the quarterback in 471 passblocking snaps.

Head coach Jeff Taylor has been with UTSA since 2020, won the C-USA Championship in 2021 and also coached at Texas from 2015-2016, SMU, and then Arkansas before becoming the head coach at UTSA.

The University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners

This will be the first time Texas and UTSA have competed.

UTSA averaged 36.9 points per game last year with 183.5 yards rushing and 255.5 yards passing per game.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) last year had their most successful season winning 12 games and lossing only two games to North Texas then San Diego State in the Frisco Bowl.

First time head coach Joey McGuire will host Texas in Lubbock to kickof f the Big 12 games for the season. Texas and Texas Tech first played in 1928 and Texas holds a 54-17 overall series lead.

Senior Tyler Shough was named the starting quarterback by McGuire and was put on the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Last year Shough was hurt during the Texas game. The 6’5” 230 lbs Shough played three years at the University of Oregon before transferring to Texas Tech.

On defense, super-senior Adrian Frye, Houston, a Texas native, is back from injury and is expected to be a key contributor this season. Frye has a career 42 games played, 63 solo tackles, 24 assisted tackles, and seven interceptions. Frye is also a punt returner.

Coach Brown is also looking for Lee Kpogba to make big contributions for the defense. Kpogba transferred from East Mississippi

West Virginia Mountaineers

On defense, Jered Bartlett plays Bandit which is more of a pass defender or Jack. Think of Joseph Ossai when he played at Texas. Bartlett had an outstanding 2021 season playing in 13 games and recording 15 solo tackles, 16 assists, four sacks.

Last season West Virginia topped Texas 31-23 at Morgantown to go up on the overall series 6-5. This year the battle is at DKR.

Head coach Matt Campell will have 18 seniors returning this season. Standouts Xavier Hutchinson and O’Rien Vance will lead the offense and defense. Wide receiver Hutchinson was a First Team AllBig 12 in 2020, 2021, and has 1,758 yards while at Iowa State. Linebacker Vance has recorded 194 tackles (93 solo) in his career with 10 total sacks.
