ANDREW FARRANT ALT EREGO PHOTOGRAPHY H aving always been creative, I played guitar in bands f o r m a n y y e a r s , b u i l t ra c e c a r s a n d g e n e r a l l y t i n ke r e d about making things, changing things and coming up with increasingly odd ideas, always taking the view "why CAN'T you do it that way" ?

This attitude has permeated into my photography - why CA N'T you use lig hts this way or that way ? Why CAN'T you paint someone gold ? etc.

I drifted into photography when I was fortunate enough to shoot the first ever Abu D h a b i G ra n d P r i x , f ra n t i c a l l y b u y i n g a c h e a p c a m e ra (Canon 400D) and extremely good Lens (L Series 70-200 f2,8). The camera went by the wayside very quickly as I upgraded to a 5D MKII, the lenses multiplied and so the bug took hold.

The satisfaction from creating a different image is immense - I don't know who gets most excited, the models or myself, it really is a pleasure and privilege to do this job.

T he Grand P rix was 4 years ag o but i have only been a "serious" photog rapher for the last two years - I now have a full tim e studio w h i c h a l l o w s m e t o i n d u l g e m y p a s s i o n f o r p h o t o g ra p h y w h e n e v e r I wish, doing weddings, fam ilies and creative model portfolios. Often, the best shoots are impromptu with no preparation at all.

While I do a significant number of shoots, I work extensively with my muse Julie Palmer who has the patience of a s a i n t w h e r e p h o t o g ra p h y is concerned and has all o w e d m e t o ex p e r i m e n t with lighting, shapes, outfits and styles - thank you :)

“All of my favourite photographers, Robert Alvarado, John Farrar, David LaChapelle etc all have a very distinctive and individual style. so much so that you can tell their work a mile away. Even if another photographer emulates their style, it is clearly "In the style of .....".

“At the moment, I am experimenting with radically different looks, subject matter and techniques, but when I settle into my own style, I would dearly love to develop to the point where my work is distinctive. I seem to be slowly moving in the direction of photographs that don't sit easily, where something jarrs uncomfortably, like a small child with a big knife, or a snarling rotweiler in a fluffy pink collar - the other directions drawing me in are pin up (because Alvarado IS the modern Gil Elvgren and Alberto Varga) and alternative / creative / artistic headshots.”

“ M y m a i n d r i v e i s c re ativity and fun - If I can create images that both the model and I are proud of and I have fun doing it, I consider I will have won the game and will be happy with that a s m y a c h i e v e m e n t .”

Mixing and cross pollinating styles has always attracted me, coming up with things that really "shouldn't" work together but do, such as classic pin up poses and editing but wearing alternative clothes, or perhaps beautifully executed portraits with something clearly quite wrong in the background. Being a pioneer is a tall order and an accolade others bestow.

“I got into modeling through a girl I know, also known as DMY Photography. She had just started in photography & had an idea for me to try in one of her Grimm Fairy Tale shoots to be the White Queen from Alice in Wonderland.�

I would have to say the work I am m ost proud of would be my boudoir photos, with Studio 33 Chattanooga & also my dark pinup style s h o o t w i t h K e n n y M a r t i n P h o t o g ra p h y. A little over a year ago a friend of m ine was leaving the state of Virginia for California a n d a s ke d m e i f I would mind doing a couple of pictures o f h e r w i t h m y l i ttle HD camera I had j u s t b o u g h t .”

“She wanted to have a couple pictures made to start a portfolio and didn't have the money to p a y a p h o t o g r a p h e r.

So I did the pictures for her one afternoon and to all of our a m a ze m e n t , t h e y were wonderful. I posted them on my Facebook and next t h i n g I k n o w, I h a d m o d e l s f ro m t h e a r e a w a n t i n g m e t o t a ke t h e i r p i c t u r e .”

“ I’ve worked with so many great photographers.

I always enjoy working with Black Orchard Photography, we have a great chemistry and always produce amazing images. He has produced me a lot of great images in my portfolio. I also had the opportunity to work with John Farrar this year which was amazing, and one of my favorite shoots to date.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNUSUAL TALENTS? “I am quite good at a nail art. I can also turn my eyelids inside out, does that count?”

What drew you to photography?

I'm an artist by n a t u r e , I d ra w, paint , sculpt, dabble in spe c i a l e f fe c t s m a ke u p . M y w i fe taught me how t o u s e a c a m e ra , d u e t o a fa v o r o f a friend asking me to help shoot their daughters wedding. From that point on I w a s h o o ke d a n d found another art form.

What have been some of your big gest accomplish ments? “ God and Fam ily and being blessed by both. God for my g i f t s a n d fa m i l y fo r s u p p o r t .”

Where would you like to see your art in the future?

“Everywhere I love impacting peoples lives with a digital canvas...I haven't p i c ke d u p a p a i n t brush in years but I'm still creating w o r k s o f a r t .”

I'm am 23 yrs. old i live in Cleveland, tn. I am a mommy to a beautiful 5 yr old girl, who I might mention is my world. I am a very outgoing person with a huge, bubbly personality.
