Furthermore, systematic work continues on developing new varieties that can manage with decidedly less fertilizer and still produce consistently high yields. For decades now, greatly reduced amounts of nitrogen have been used in the breeding yard, enabling the selection of breeding lines with optimized nitrogen use efficiency. Primarily, this practice plays a decisive role in helping to protect groundwater in the hop-producing regions, but it also has an impact on the issues surrounding the wilt disease caused by the Verticillium fungus, since the disease can be alleviated, at least in its milder form, through deployment of less nitrogen.
