Welcome to the Hope Against Cancer Business Newsletter.

The October Hope Business Lunch is sponsored by CBA Business Solutions and we would like to thank them for their generous support.

Find out more about CBA Business Solutions on the back cover of this newsletter.

We are incredibly proud to announce that the Hope Business Club is now presented in partnership with the Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust – supported by Mattioli Woods.

The objectives of this partnership are to strengthen ties with the business community, increase awareness of local cancer research initiatives and the importance of financial planning in supporting such causes, and to generate financial support for local cancer research through joint events and initiatives.

As our partnership evolves with the Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust it is a fantastic time to be a part of Hope’s Business Club.

Since the last Business newsletter, we have welcomed James Greenlees as our new Chair of Trustees and Rob Marsh as the Vice Chair. After 10 fantastic years Rick Moore stepped back from the position and has become the President of the Charity.

We have also introduced a new tier system for the Business Club. This is designed to allow each member to support the charity in a way that suits them.

The support of business is a vital foundation for the continuity of the innovative cancer research and world-class care that we fund.

To showcase this incredible work we have released our latest Impact Report. We have physical copies available at the Business Club Lunch or on request. The print cost of these copies was generously sponsored by Noble Day Associates.

We also have digital copies available via our website: www.hopeagainstcancer.org.uk/impact-report

Building financial security while supporting life-changing causes

When it comes to financial planning, most families focus on the immediate concerns: paying the mortgage, saving for their children’s education, and building a comfortable retirement fund. However, the most successful financial strategies often incorporate a broader vision that extends beyond personal wealth accumulation to include meaningful charitable giving and community support.

The recent partnership between Hope Against Cancer and the Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust –supported by Mattioli Woods – demonstrates how thoughtful financial planning can create ripple effects that benefit both families and society. This collaboration highlights an important principle: when we plan our finances effectively, we create opportunities not just for our own security but for supporting causes that matter to us.

The foundation of family financial planning

Effective financial planning begins with understanding your family’s unique circumstances and goals. This means taking a comprehensive view of your current financial position, including income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. From there, it’s about creating a roadmap that addresses both short-term needs and long-term objectives.

Pensions remain one of the most crucial elements of this planning. With the ongoing changes to pension legislation meaning many of us are having to reconsider our retirement strategy to incorporate potentially higher Inheritance Tax (IHT), families need to be more proactive than ever in ensuring their retirement income will be adequate.

For many families, inheritance planning is equally important. This isn’t just about minimising Inheritance Tax, although that’s certainly a consideration. It’s about ensuring that wealth passes smoothly between generations and that your family’s values are preserved alongside your financial assets. This might include setting up trusts, making lifetime gifts, or establishing charitable legacies that reflect what matters most to your family.

The role of professional guidance

The complexity of modern financial planning means that professional advice is more valuable than ever. With constantly evolving tax legislation, changing pension rules, and an increasingly sophisticated range of investment options, families benefit enormously from working with experienced financial advisers who can navigate these complexities on their behalf.

The best advisers don’t just focus on the numbers. They take time to understand their clients’ values, aspirations, and concerns, creating bespoke strategies that reflect what truly matters to each family. This might mean prioritising capital growth for younger families, focusing on income generation for those approaching retirement, or developing sophisticated succession planning for established businesses. When families work with experienced advisers who understand both the technical aspects of wealth management and the personal values that drive their clients’ decisions, the results can be transformative. It’s this combination of technical expertise and personal understanding that enables families to build financial security while also pursuing their broader goals and supporting causes they care about.

Integrating charitable giving into financial planning

One of the most rewarding aspects of comprehensive financial planning is the ability to incorporate charitable giving in a tax-efficient manner. This might involve regular donations to causes you care about, legacy giving through your will, or more sophisticated arrangements like charitable remainder trusts.

The partnership between Hope Against Cancer and the Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust – supported by Mattioli Woods – exemplifies this approach. Both the trust and Mattioli Woods’ core values of community, diversity and compassion demonstrate how charitable giving can be integrated into a broader philosophy of wealth stewardship. Their support for cancer research initiatives shows how strategic philanthropy can address causes that touch every family.

Building long-term wealth with purpose

The most successful financial plans are those that balance personal security with broader social impact. This means building sufficient wealth to protect your family’s future while also creating opportunities to support causes that align with your values.

Mattioli Woods’ track record of raising £500,000 for charitable efforts alongside its core business of managing client investments demonstrates this balance in action. Its 30+ years of experience in financial planning, combined with its commitment to community engagement, shows how businesses can create value for clients while contributing to society.

Looking ahead

As families navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape, the importance of holistic planning becomes ever more apparent. This means thinking beyond simple wealth accumulation to consider how financial decisions can create positive outcomes for families and communities alike.

This collaboration represents a powerful model for how thoughtful financial planning can drive both personal security and social impact. Through joint events, strategic partnerships, and community engagement, the business community can play a vital role in supporting life-changing research while building stronger, more connected communities.

Ultimately, the best financial plans are those that reflect not just our monetary goals, but our deepest values and aspirations for the future.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our dedicated Hope Business Club members. Your support is one of the main pillars on which the continuity of Hope Against Cancer and our funding of world-class local cancer research and care is built.

If Alice Can, Anyone Can

On the August bank holiday weekend, 77 riders took part in a cycle challenge which took them from Old Dalby to Sheringham in one day to raise money for Hope Against Cancer.

The riders set off at 5.30am and made their way to four pit stops before they started arriving in Sheringham from 4pm. It was a perfect day for riding and by the time evening fell they had reached their fund-raising goal.

The ride was organised by Alice Greaves from Old Dalby with support from the team at Hope Against Cancer and a host of volunteers and sponsors.

Alice’s fundraising efforts have seen her win a Furnley House Award, the ‘Stacey’s Wings of Inspiration Award’ at the Butterfly Breast Cancer Awards, an invitation to meet King Charles III, a BBC Make A Difference Award, and she is a finalist for a Pride of Britain Award.

Nigel Rose, CEO at Hope Against Cancer, said that “Alice is one of the bravest, most courageous and determined young woman that many of us will ever meet. This money will be transformational for our experts at the Leicester Cancer Research Centre.”

Alice said, “the day was spectacular. I just want to thank everyone who has supported, sponsored, donated and rode with us.”

The day’s headline sponsor was NFU Mutual, alongside a host of others. We would like to specifically thank the following Business Club members and HOPE supporters for their contributions.

The Cradock Arms: When we put out a call on social media for a food donation for the finish line party The Cradock Arms answered in spectacular style. They provided incredible food and a range of drinks too! Not only that, Jonny Wainwright took to his pedals and participated in the ride!

Noble Day Associates: Sponsored the rider’s jerseys and had their logo feature prominently on the front and the back

Soar Valley Press: There was an unfortunate last-minute emergency with some of the printing. A quick phone call to Soar Valley Press 48 hours before go-time and, not only were they able to produce prints with incredible speed, but they donated it all too!

CBA: Congratulations Steven Glanvill from CBA for completing the ride, and for raising a fantastic £830!

Long term supporter FMB: At every Hope Against Cancer cycle challenge since 2015 there has been a bright red van quietly following at the back of the group, there to keep the bikes running safely and all the riders riding.

Without Simon and FMB Cycles none of the rides could have happened in the same safe and smooth way they did.

Simon and the team stepped up again for this incredible ride.

And, Alice’s father: DG Landscape Design and Construction. Thank you to everyone that volunteered, supported and donated along the way.

With money still coming in, the total, at time of writing, stands at a mind-blowing £ 114,148!

Thank you for your support

What your support means

This story has been told to us by Michael, it is his very personal experience of cancer and highlights the importance of why we do what we do and why it is vital that we continue to fund and support the cancer research and clinical trials that can change lives.

Michael was on a trial to compare the effectiveness of second line drug treatments with current chemotherapy in untreated patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) at the Hope Cancer Trials Centre between January 2019 and July 2020.

Before such trials, the standard treatment for CLL was chemotherapy, with drugs as second line treatment. Researchers wanted to see if these roles could be reversed.

Michael initially went through a barrage of blood tests looking for biomarkers. The tests were designed to check if Michael exhibited genetic characteristics that would respond to the trial drugs.

Following acceptance onto the trial Michael was treated with a drug named ibrutinib.

Throughout the process he was under constant surveillance to ensure that both the participants and the researchers understood what was happening.

Michael was first diagnosed with CLL in 2011. It was at an extremely early stage and he experienced the first aspect of CLL treatment named ‘Watch and Wait’.

During this period a person with CLL has regular blood tests to monitor the progress of the disease. CLL is one of the few cancers that does not benefit from early intervention.

For Michael, this Watch and Wait period would last seven years.

In 2017 his white blood count was trending upwards and in 2018 his doctor told him it was time to start treatment.

When asked about his feelings about going on a trial Michael told us that he was a little nervous. The drugs being tested were incredibly powerful and he wondered about the side-effects.

The team at the Centre were always on hand and Michael said that they do “amazing work. They are so knowledgeable and supportive, always willing to go the extra mile to make me feel welcome and comfortable.”

Michael continued to say that he “owed them a tremendous amount and is endlessly thankful.”

In the end Michael was unable to complete the trial. He also has Crohn’s disease and a flare up of this meant that he needed to withdraw from the trial. Nevertheless, the drugs had proven their worth. His white blood cell count had reduced to normal and he returned to ‘Watch and Wait’ status.

In 2022 he needed to re-start treatment – and this time he was given Venetoclax – which was a direct result of the outcomes of the trial he had started in 2019!

Michael is doing well and the drugs are keeping his CLL under control without the need for chemotherapy.

What your support means

Meet the researcher: Dr Nikila Patil.

Dr Nikila Patil is a clinical oncology trainee, who specialises in treating cancer with radiotherapy.

Hope Against Cancer is supporting Dr Patil to complete an MD during her training.

Dr Patil’s work is focused on understanding the impact of Race and Ethnicity on toxicity with radiotherapy in head and neck cancer, the results of this and how this could support a patient’s best treatment plan.

Dr Patil is also studying the cultural challenges faced by both patients and healthcare professionals and working to understand how this information may be used to support the development of treatment strategies that are mindful of cultural differences.

Dr Patil has shown previously that in South Asian individuals receiving radical radiotherapy for oral cavity cancers, a specific type of head and neck cancer, poorer results have been seen.

With 39.6% of the population of Leicester identifying as South Asian and high mortality rates for this type of cancer within Leicester, this is an important focus for research.

This research will help us to improve cancer care pathways for those receiving treatment for head and neck cancer and understand how ethnicity may impact on the treatment toxicity.

This is important work to help us improve equity of access to clinical trials.

The Director of the Hope Cancer Trials Centre, Dr Harriet Walter, said that “the support of Hope Against Cancer is key to supporting the academic career development of junior investigators.

“Dr Patil, through the support of Hope Against Cancer, is able to undertake important work that will directly benefit our local population.”

Research and clinical trials are a circle of collaboration: research supports clinical trials and clinical trials support research.

Hope Against Cancer is proud to support such work which has recently been published in the British Journal of Cancer.
