Hospital - Extra Funding Update
Hope Against Cancer are set to end 2021 on a high after achieving another amazing funding result.
Not satisfied with having already raised £1.5 million to double the capacity of our Hope Cancer Trials Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary, we have now been able to provide an extra £100,000 to continue to support the fantastic work that takes place at our newly refurbished centre.

Hello to all of our wonderful Hope Through Business members! The summer has been an exceptionally brilliant time for both fundraising and research, as you’ll see during the course of this newsletter. Some astounding businesses have pulled off some amazing feats - from Steamin’ Billy’s Bike Ride to PRP’s Tough Mudder run and everyone in-between.

An extra special mention must go to Hope-funded Professor Martin Dyer - whose research into chemotherapy-free cancer treatment is a genuine landmark in the ght against cancer. We hope that you all have a fantastic, healthy Autumn, and you don’t miss the sun too much. Thanks to every one of our Hope Through Business Club members - and we hope you enjoy our latest newsletter.
This includes providing £15,000 per year for three years to part-fund a Hope PhD Studentship at the University of Leicester’s College of Life Sciences. This new position will be two-thirds funded by the University themselves.
We are also delighted to announce that Claire Smith has been appointed as Database & Tissue Banking Assistant within the Cancer Centre. Claire works within the Tissue Collection and banking team and already has made significant progress with developing the tissue repository activities (sample labelling, tracking, storage, and legislative administration). They have now procured the new system that they will be using, and Claire is central for developing the system to all complex requirements. Claire’s appointment has been transformational, and £35,000 of funding can be used for further expansion and development of the Biobank.

Hope for Life Appeal

older patients or those with other health issues.
Shortly we will be announcing our public Hope for Life appeal
Lastly, we have previously supported pump-priming calls within the Leicester Cancer Research Centre. These projects are critically important, providing much-needed seed funds for researchers to investigate new areas of interest. Funding for this type of exploratory/investigatory science is not typically available elsewhere, we are pleased to announce that we have raised £50,000 to fund these projects. The money is typically used to further advance studies by purchasing specialised pieces of vital equipment.
This is a big appeal for us as we need to raise over £500,000 to help fund this £1.5million expansion. There are many ways you can get involved and we will be announcing what you can do soon. However, for now we are asking for your help when we launch. Keep an eye on our social media and when we go live could you help spread the word. The more people that know about this appeal the better. Let’s make this Hope’s biggest public funding appeal yet!
Hope-funded researcher Professor Martin Dyer has led a study into chemotherapy-free treatment for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) at our Clinical Trials Facility, and the research has seen promising results. This could mark the beginning of an effective cancer treatment away from chemotherapy and its side effects.
The research included combining protein BCL2 and drug Obinutuzumab. BCL2 is known to effectively kill CLL cells and in this instance, the new combination worked - there was a 95% rate of complete remission in those treated.

Hope Against Cancer’s Chief Executive Nigel Rose told us: “As you can imagine, we are absolutely delighted at being able to provide the extra funding for these projects. In reaching our goal of improving outcomes and helping cancer patients live longer, we know that we must have a multi-faceted and targeted approach in using our vital funds to best effect.”
In other words - 95% of treated individuals showed zero signs of leukaemia after treatment.
The new funding, together with the recent expansion of the Hope Centre, will continue to ensure that Leicester remains a centre of excellence for Cancer treatment. It means that ‘early phase’ Cancer trials can go from strength to strength, including new-generation ‘bio-specific’ treatments not currently available within the NHS which target cancer whilst leaving other cells in the body with little or no damage.
This is an amazing breakthrough. CLL is the most common form of adult chronic leukaemia, and up until now has always required chemotherapy. Given the distressing side effects of chemotherapy, this can be particularly traumatic for
Professor Martin, director of the Er nest and Helen Scott Haematology Research Institute, was thrilled at the outcome of the research: “The high response rates and remissions have made us optimistic that this treatment could become a standard of care for CLL in the future, I am delighted that we were able to offer patients in Leicester the opportunity to take part in this trial at the Hope Clinical Trials Facility”
Our Clinical Trials Facility is expanding. Help us to make our vision become a reality.

Our CEO Nigel also commented: “We are thrilled to see such incredible results from the Hope Clinical Trials Facility, this simply could not happen without the fantastic support from the people and businesses of Leicestershire and Rutland who fundraise, volunteer, donate, take part in and attend Hope’s events.”
We’d like to say a huge thank you for the incredible work put in by Professor Martin and his team!

A note from Nigel...
It’s wonderful for us to be able to announce, as on page one, more and more funds for vital, local cancer research projects that will underpin the work of the Hope Cancer Trials Centre and continue to make a positive difference to the lives of many cancer patients and their families. But as any Chief Executive of any charity should know, focusing on the potential long-term change and wider impact you have, is essential. Those organisations a charity contracts with demand it, donors demand it and the public should too.
Therefore quantifying the value and outcomes from Hope Funding over the last few years is important for us to understand.
The Leicester Cancer Research Centre (LCRC) is part of the College of Life Sciences at the University of Leicester led by Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Head of College, Professor Tom Robinson.

It is a partnership that now rivals those of major cancer research hubs in much larger cities. The LCRC is internationally recognised for their research in key areas including treatment of haematological malignancies, precision therapeutics for mesothelioma, pre-clinical models for drug discovery, cancer prevention and the liquid biopsy for cancer detection.
Their mission is to facilitate world-leading bench-to-bedside research in cancer prevention, early detection, and cutting edge treatments for solid tumours and haematological malignancies. This is underpinned by a strong focus on translational research studies, and delivered via patient-centred approaches to transform outcomes for patients with cancer or at risk of cancer.
Key staff include 14 senior professors who are University Academics, 24 researchers, 33 professional services staff and 28 research students. Many staff are experts involved in the Leicester Precision Medicine Centre, one of five research institutes.
It has benefitted enormously from the generosity and strategic investment of Hope since the Centre’s inception in 2016. Over the last five years, £1,152,618.00 (excluding the recent capital appeal) has been awarded to support vital equipment, nursing staff, PhD studentships, and pump-priming development awards. The benefit of this to researchers and our patients is evidenced by the papers they have produced and the additional funding they have leveraged. In addition, training of the researchers of the future has been brilliantly supported too. The funding they have received from Hope has allowed them to obtain vital preliminary data for publications and subsequent grant applications.

These are just some of the outcomes deemed successful post-Hope Funding. In addition, the ECMC (Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre) renewal was in large part successful due to the continuation and ongoing support of Hope funding for the research nurse. This circa £1.5M investment has translated into £24M of funding for cancer research locally. Many competitive bidding processes favour or even require applications to include a credible local partner who will be meaningfully involved in delivering projects. The ultimate outcome is the Centre’s application to embed cancer as a new Theme in the British Research Council/National Institute of Health Research (BRC NIHR) bid for a large funding award. This is a prestigious award which will transform infrastructure and research capability.
We look forward to a continuing partnership with helping the Leicester Centre remain world-beating in its cancer research excellence.

Mr Peter Toone took part in a ‘walking your dog’ challenge

Some readers and Hope followers may know that since the Hope Cancer Trials Centre originally opened in 2012, Hope has raised funds each year to sponsor and fund our ‘Hope Nurse’, who significantly adds to the great care and support that cancer trials patients receive whilst undergoing their treatments.

We rotate this appointment each year so that different dedicated research nurses working in the Centre have the opportunity to wear the ‘Hope Nurse badge’, which they all take great pride in. Our new Hope Nurse this time round is Molly Scotland, pictured here caring for a patient at the Centre.
Amherst School
Children from 4-18 will be raising money to support Hope Against Cancer after we were chosen as their charity of the year.
Their first event is a Christmas fair on the 27th of November, swiftly followed by a number of staff and students completing the Loughborough Santa Fun Run. Many more activities are planned over the coming school year, so do look out for chances to sup port their efforts.
Peter Toone aged 86 walked 153 miles with his dog in the month of October and raised £650 for Hope He was a great friend of Allison Wilson (Founder of Hope) and has supported Hope for many years although the event was advertised by CRUK he wanted to donate to his local cancer research charity.
A note from Peter Maguire...
I am a man who keeps a diary, for the most part a collection of trivia through the daily round of my retirement. Ten years ago this month, I first documented my having a persistent dry cough that came and went for a few months. It became obvious that I had to head for the local Health Centre.

On the 8th March 2012, a date that will forever remain in my memory, the phone rang. There was silence on the phone when I picked it up. A voice then said “Is that Peter Maguire?” “Yes” I replied. “I have some difficult news for you. Now…. Don’t panic!” Of course, my heart missed a beat. “It is possible you have lung cancer and must see a consultant at Glenfield Hospital.” Those few simple words led to a journey that has opened my eyes to the energy, the drive, and the wonderful work done by the NHS staff in Leicester, their support and care, and also that of Hope Against Cancer for whom I was one of the first that went through their trials unit at the LRI. I was diagnosed with ALK+ve lung cancer, which at the time provided an expectation of just 6 months to a year or so more of life. My consultant, Professor Samreen Ahmed was at the very forefront of developments in cancer research and initially I was given a trial vaccine in the Hope facility. This was followed by four sessions of chemotherapy over four months and a necessary blood transfusion. The cancer was still present. It is here that research changed my life. A new drug - Crizotinib – was being developed specifically to control the proteins on which my ALK+ve lung cancer was feeding, and Samreen Ahmed obtained this for me on a compassionate access programme before it was commissioned in the NHS. In January 2013 I took my first pill. Within weeks the cancer was seen to be being reduced. Early on I had a number of radiotherapy sessions to ‘zap’ some of the tumours, but further developments have resulted in more powerful, more targeted drugs – Ceritinib, and now Brigatinib - which have kept my cancer under control for 10 years. I am a very, very lucky man. It is all down to the wonderful research that is being done to defeat this disease, and such research is locally superbly supported, specifically in the oncology department at Leicester which is at the forefront of such medical science, and Hope against Cancer is one of those providing funds for the world class facilities for that research. I cannot thank them all enough. Ten years of life when a mere year was expected is something for which I will be forever - forever grateful.

In Memoriam: The Very Reverend Derek Hole
It is with sadness that we report on the death of the Very Reverend Derek Hole, a long-time supporter, advocate and friend of Hope Against Cancer who was involved from the very start of the Charity when it was founded in 2003.
Born in Plymouth in 1933, Derek felt called to the priesthood from a young age. After national service in the RAF and a period as a librarian at All Souls College, Oxford, he attended Lincoln Theological College. In 1960 he was ordained a deacon and appointed Assistant Curate of St Mary Magdalene Church in Knighton. He was ordained a priest in 1961.
After holding positions in South Africa, London (briefly), Warwickshire and Northamptonshire, Derek returned to Leicester as Vicar of St James the Greater. This is the church on the opposite side of Victoria Park from the University, and so a close association with that institution naturally followed. He was made a Chaplain to HM The Queen in 1985, and in 1992 moved from St James the Greater to Leicester Cathedral, where he served as Provost until his retirement in 1999.
Nigel Rose, Hope CEO said: “I met Reverend Hole soon after I took up the post at Hope in 2014. I was privileged that he continued his long-time support of the Charity with enthusiasm and commitment. Always Derek to the team, he was a frequent visitor to the office as he lived quite close to where we are based. We’ve lost a valued and key member of the Hope Against Cancer family of supporters”.

Making their memory last
Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a wonderful way to celebrate their life, to cherish their memory and to support the valuable work of a cause and charity which was close to their heart.
