Shelby County (TN) Chapter Of The Links, Incorporated History

The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1946, is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. This international, not-for-profit corporation has a membership of more than 17,000 professional women of color serving in 299 chapters in 41 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the United Kingdom.

The Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has touched the lives of many citizens in Memphis and across the globe. In 1983, a special interest group was organized by Charlotte Brooks Polk to address educational, cultural and civic development in the Memphis and Shelby County area. Two years later, with the same goals in mind, the group was chartered as a chapter of The Links, Inc. Today, the Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Inc. is continuing to nurture members of the community, particularly in the areas of education, economic empowerment, health, financial literacy and civic leadership. Furthering the chapter’s community outreach, the chapter continues a long-standing relationship with its adopted school, Double Tree Elementary, participating in career fairs, field trips, health fairs and cultural enrichment activities.

Over the past two decades, the Shelby County (TN) Chapter also contributed to the advancement of area youth by adopting the Jessie Mahan Day Care Center, providing a full playground for the Southside Boys and Girls Club and working with the Exchange Club on child advocacy issues. The Leadership Academy is the crown jewel of the chapter’s program services. The Academy is an eight-month mentoring program for African American high school males providing leadership development, cultural experiences, mentoring and volunteerism experiences. Over 500 young men have completed the program, which culminates with the annual Beautillion celebration. The inaugural Le Beautillion Militaire was held in April 1987. This initiative boasts doctors, lawyers, congressmen and leaders across the country as program graduates. Through the years, the outstanding graduates have returned to serve as mentors and sponsors to program participants. Through this program, the Chapter has sponsored numerous projects in the community and provided college scholarships for young men. Beyond impacting the leaders of tomorrow, the efforts of the Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Inc. are global in its reach. The Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated continues to be recognized as an award-winning chapter at the area and national level. The history of the Shelby County (TN) Chapter provides a rich foundation to fuel its present and future endeavors of Linked in Friendship, Connected in Service.

Grand Introduction of the 2025 Beaux

Friends,

My Sisters of The Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and I are committed to transforming our communities through service. Throughout the year we invited you to join us in serving the needs of a valuable community asset – our future leaders.

Tonight’s presentation represents our most compelling case that affirms the value of your support for our 2025 Beautillion Experience. Leaders are rarely born, but almost always made. What we pour into the minds and spirits of our youth is what they will draw upon in times of challenge, hardship, and opportunity.

Every person and experience chosen during our yearlong program promoted learning, inspired confidence, and demonstrated the value of cross-cultural immersion. In other words, we want them to meet each day open to possibilities that they too can make a difference. I am sure our Beaux will do so because of their families, friends, teachers, coaches, advisors, and supporters, many of whom are with us tonight. We are so grateful for your contributions to the young men we served this year and for your support of this effort.

We are proud of and honored to present 2025 Beaux this evening. We are certain that you and so many members of our local and global community will see a return on your investment in the foreseeable future

God’s Blessing to You!

2025 Beautillion Experience Committee

The Leadership Academy 2025 Programs

Leadership Academy Programs

The Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated’s “Leadership Academy for Young African American Men” builds upon the chapter’s extensive experience in developing and implementing leadership programs for high school-aged African American males. For 40 years, our chapter has dedicated time, talent, and resources to strengthen communities and enhance the quality of life for people of African descent through friendship and service. As of 2025, more than 500 young men from the Memphis community have been nurtured through our Leadership Academy program. All participants have graduated high school and transitioned to college or vocational training. The diverse expertise of our chapter members in fields such as healthcare, law, education, government, business and finance, social work, and philanthropy uniquely equips us to create impactful programs that prepare young men for success. The Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated takes immense pride in the fact that over the past four decades, hundreds of young Black men have developed leadership skills, engaged in community service, cultivated meaningful relationships, and learned the vital importance of ethics and integrity.

Leadership 101: It’s a Man’s World

The Leadership Academy kickoff, titled “It’s a Man’s World II,” marked our first session with the 2024-2025 Fellows/Beaux of the Leadership Academy. During this session, the young men gathered to engage in discussions about “manly issues” from two different perspectives: David Oppong and Reverend Sherman Helton, Jr. David Oppong, a Civil Engineer with the Memphis Transit Authority, focused on STEM. He encouraged the Beaux to work hard, emphasizing that diligence would enable them to live comfortably and enjoy life’s rewards. Reverend Sherman Helton, Jr., Senior Pastor of Magnolia Baptist Church in Memphis, shared his wisdom after more than 10 years of pastoring, following in the footsteps of his father, Reverend Dr. Sherman Helton, Sr., pastor of New Hope M.B. Church in Southaven, MS. Rev. Helton explored the etymology of the word “masculinity” and its deeper meanings. He concluded his session with a powerful quote from Jimmy Dean: “I cannot change the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” Rev. Helton encouraged the young men to interpret the quote in their own words. One Beau responded, “This means if one goal doesn’t work out, I can change my path, keep my goal, and try again.” Rev. Helton smiled and said, “My man, I think you got it.”

“Seeds of Success: A Journey of Planting, Growing & Building on Excellence”

“Young people, I want to beg of you always keep your eyes open to what Mother Nature has to teach you. By so doing, you will learn many valuable things every day of your life.”

As part of our STEM educational focus, the Health & Human Services facet presented the “Seeds of Success” program, bringing lessons in agriculture and nutrition to life through a hands-on farming experience for our Beaux. The Leadership Academy partnered with Kenneth Anderson, Founder and Executive Director of Everbloom Farmacy, a Memphis-based organization that empowers homestead gardeners through free seedling distribution and community learning. Everbloom Farmacy is dedicated to building a sustainable food production system in Memphis and its most vulnerable communities by uniting urban farms, community gardens, backyard gardeners, landowners, artists, chefs, activists, and local organizations. Through this collaboration, Everbloom helps combat food insecurity, chronic disease and social disconnection within the community.

In addition to practical lessons in planting and growing, our Beaux learned that what we eat directly affects how we feel, our physical activity and how we interact with ourselves, others, and our communities. Through the “Seeds of Success” program, the Beaux gained knowledge in the science of growing from seed, the vital link between diet and health and the ongoing influence of agriculture on our daily lives.

“The Barbershop Talk Session” Beaux to Men

The Shelby County Links’ National Trends and Services Facet hosted an engaging “Barber Shop Talk” for our Leadership Academy at Napoleon’s Barber Shop. Many Black men share a special bond with their barbers and this unique connection has led to the tradition of “Barbershop Talks,” where barbershops provide a safe, informal space for Black men and teens to discuss critical issues that affect them. Beyond sparking meaningful conversations, the barbershop setting encourages brainstorming and even serves as informal therapy, addressing some of the most pressing concerns faced by Black teens and men.

This was a closed session exclusively for men, giving the Beaux the opportunity to speak openly and candidly with the presenters. The panel included: Melvin Burgess, Shelby County Assessor of Property; Jeremy Simpson, owner of Systems Technologies; Marcus Brown and Marcus Brown II, owners of Complete Computer Services; Alexander Sasfras, Operations Management Consultant; Napoleon Dickerson, owner of Napoleon’s Barber Shop; Carlos Pullman, owner of Pullman’s Barber Shop; and several other professionals. In addition, several former Beaux from the Class of 2024 also returned to participate. They shared their experiences from their first year of college, offering valuable advice and study tips to the current Beaux.

“Meet the Mayor”

The Leadership Academy program was hosted at Memphis City Hall, where Memphis Mayor Paul Young delivered an inspiring speech to the Beaux about the importance of being a public servant. His message encouraged them not to shy away from leadership roles, emphasizing the significance of city planning and the pathway to leadership. Brian Harris, Director of the Office of Youth Services, provided the Beaux with a list of service and volunteer opportunities, including MIFA and urged them to get involved in community service. He highlighted how such involvement fosters a sense of responsibility, empathy and social awareness.

Reflecting on the opportunity to speak with the mayor, Beau Joshua Robinson shared, “I thought it was an enriching experience to talk to the Mayor and I appreciated that he took the time to speak with us and valued our voices.” Beau Yusuf Sharif also found the experience eye-opening, particularly regarding the project to renovate the second bridge and repair roads—an initiative he now appreciates more as a new driver.

In collaboration with the National Trends and Services facet, the Leadership Academy hosted a financial wellness program at Youth Villages, sponsored with supplies from Bank of America. Each Beau received a notebook to draft their financial blueprint and take notes throughout the session. Led by Wendy Kirkendoll, Branch Manager at Cadence Bank, the Beaux learned about key topics such as financial literacy, budgeting and investments. Fintech entrepreneur Stuart Lott, founder of Backbone, a financial technology company that simplifies accounting and bookkeeping for small businesses, also joined the program. As part of EpiCenter’s Business Incubator, Lott shared his journey of building his business, offering valuable insights into budgeting, financial literacy and tech entrepreneurship. He discussed the challenges and opportunities he faced while starting his company and the support and funding he has received as a new business owner.

Leadership Civics - Visit At State Capitol

Through the Leadership Academy’s Legislative Affairs program, the Beaux gained valuable insights into the importance of civics and government. This educational experience included a field trip and retreat at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, where the students had the opportunity to observe firsthand how our system of government operates. Senator Raumesh Akbari, chapter member and a member of the Tennessee Senate and First Vice Chair of the Senate’s Education Committee, hosted the Leadership Academy for the retreat. During this enlightening experience, the Beaux met with legislators and learned how to transform their knowledge into active civic engagement, both inside and outside of the classroom. Beau Zanden Kelly shared that the retreat was “very valuable for making connections and seeing how the state works.” One of the speakers, who was close to their age, discussed the power of money, sparking excitement in Beau Ryan James, who said, “It made me excited about the efforts being put in to improve Memphis.”

Go, Grizzzzzlies!

The Beaux enjoyed the Grizzlies game from a suite generously donated by one of our incredible sponsors. The Grizzlies took on the Utah Jazz and delivered an exciting 125–103 victory, which had everyone excited. Before tip-off, we had the amazing chance to head down to the court and be part of the fan tunnel, cheering on the players as they ran out to start the game. The entire experience was packed with energy, excitement, and unforgettable moments.

Father and Son Luncheon

Derrick Burroughs, a former NFL player and 1st round draft pick for the Buffalo Bills, served as the keynote speaker for this program. As the author of the book ErasedfromHistory,Mr. Burroughs shared his powerful journey of redemption, discussing how he made peace with his past and encouraging others to revitalize and nurture their families, friends and relationships.

The highlight of the program was an engaging activity led by Jermaine O. Johnson, Associate Professor at the University of Memphis. Dr. Johnson, who holds a BS in Chemistry from Morehouse College and a PhD in Organometallic Photochemistry from the University of Memphis, previously worked as a Quality Assurance Chemist at Barrow-Agee Laboratories. He provided each father-son duo with parts to build a radio and when completed correctly, the radios played their father’s favorite song, providing a heartwarming conclusion to the event.

Rehearsal Time!

The Beaux rehearsed tirelessly to learn the movements of the Waltz. They were awkward at first, sometimes embarrassed, trying to remember the count—one, two, three... one, two, three. Some laughed at their own mistakes, while others furrowed their brows in concentration, eager to master the sweeping rhythm. Beneath the surface of clumsy footwork and unsure hands was a desire to impress and to prepare for the big day. In learning the Waltz, they were learning more than a dance—they were learning poise, patience, and the first steps toward manhood.

Rehearsals were held with their Waltz partner, Belles and with their mothers for a contemporary dance. All enjoyed the lessons, fun and the final gratification of the strenous rehearsal outcomes!

ORITA RitesofPassage

ORITA is an African word that comes from the Yoruba tribe, which is found in Nigeria, Duhomey and Togoland. The word “ORITA” means crossroads, or the point where two pathways converge. It is the vertex of the crossroads, the converging of two meaningful alternatives that cry out for one’s loyalty.

It is believed that the Yorubas are the artistic descendants of the Nok civilization that flourished in central Nigeria before the birth of Christ. This tribe is estimated to be 12.5 million strong in Nigeria today.

The ORITA ritual originated in African culture, where it developed young men to be ready for the passage to maturity. Its dynamics have been repeated and adapted for use in the Christian community.

While the Shelby County (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, does not consider its efforts to be the final solution to the challenge of enculturation, its members hope that ORITA in its present form signals a beginning.

Micah, from Squire to Beau, we are so very proud of you, and we love you so much!

“Congratulations bro! I am proud of the man you are becoming and wish you well. Yes, you are taller than me now. ; ) Love, Noah”

Dear Micah,

We have loved you unconditionally from the first moment you entered our lives and completed our family. We are blessed to be your parents and have always tried to guide you with patience, love and humility. Thank you for making us better and inspiring us as much as we hoped to inspire you.

As a baby you were generally so peaceful and content, except when you woke in the morning and needed your banana! My, how you loved them and could hardly eat them fast enough! You were very observant, but quiet as a toddler, so much so, that we started to get anxious when you had not spoken at almost three years old. Yet, our worry quickly dissipated when you finally started talking - you did so in complete sentences and had questions and opinions about everything!

Your dimples were so disarming that when you smiled that we had to push ourselves hard to tell you no! You knew how to work the dimples, and you were always so affectionate. To say that you were and are curious would be an understatement – you were so fond of asking “why?” and often kept asking until we ran out of answers.

Despite being nearly two years younger than your brother Noah, you quickly forced us to include you in every new milestone or challenge we offered him. Thus, you read early, learned chess while in pre-K and rode a bike within weeks of your mastery. Four-year olds do not typically comprehend and explain buoyancy during bath time and sixth graders do not typically teach themselves trigonometry for fun. Your voracious appetite for knowledge challenged us to continue challenging you! Although your considerable intellectual talents are now celebrated and recognized by many, we remain most proud of the big heartedness and loving kindness that you show towards othersthrough small acts of empathy and generosity. We count those as some of your most valuable traits and encourage you to continue to center these gifts at the core of your character.

As you spread your wings, do so with the confidence that you can persevere through life’s challenges and know that we are with you every step of the way. Know that we have confidence in you and your ability to work hard and do your very best. You bring a rhythm to life that is all your own - continue to dance to your own beat. Maintain your curiosity and stoke your hunger to make the world a better place for us all, engineering our tomorrow with the strength of love.

You are our sun - a source of light and warmth in our lives- as much as you are our son. Keep shining because the world needs your light as much as we do. Continue seeking a relationship with the Creator and gratefully living life on your own terms. We are so very proud of you, our beloved son.

With Love Always,

FUN/UNIQUE FACT ABOUT YOU: I love traveling with family and friends! One year, at the age of 3, we were traveling to New York and I had on all red and blue, with my limited edition Spider Man Nike sneakers. The TSA agent asked for my name, and I said “Spider Man”. She then laughed and asked for my real name, and I said “Peter Parker.” It was obvious I loved Spider Man just as much as I loved traveling.

On September 16, 2007, we were blessed and favored to become your parents. After an early scare, threatened miscarriage and weeks of bedrest, you came into this world demanding your own space and the attention of many! You were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit immediately after you sprinted out of the birth canal. They said you had trouble breathing, we prayed, but we were not worried. We knew you were destined to be here. By the grace of God, the nurses placed you back in our arms less than four hours in the NICU. You had the loudest cry on the floor and that mouth has never stopped!

We are so proud to be your parents, Ryan. We have always taught you that raising a black male in America is a charge that we do not take lightly. You have respected and honored your upbringing and have taught us so much through your interpretation of your place in this world. You have taught us and others humility and loyalty. You have weathered the stressors of many moves, a house fire, and COVID and have risen resiliently. We were most impressed with your determination after you broke both of your arms at the beginning of your track season. You could have recoiled and withdrawn yourself from your team, but instead, you showed up for your teammates at every meet. You cheered them on as they competed and supported them through laughter and that spirit of enthusiasm that you are known for. Later that summer, you trained with an AAU team and since then, you have been a state contender with your high school team. You have such a talent and seeing you run has literally brought us to tears because we know what you have endured.

You are our precious boy and we have always been impressed by your decisiveness and confidence. When you were younger, you loved the Walgreens toy section. You would have us put you in the basket and tell us to slowly peruse down the toy aisle until you saw the exact toy you wanted. If they did not have it, you would not ask for anything else. You would say, “no keep your money mommy, I will wait”; you were funny that way. You exhibited generosity beyond your time but could hold onto a dollar for a full year!! We have watched in amazement as you have grown into the young gentleman we see before us today. You are a leader in the Memphis Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and have been involved on your high school campus and managed to juggle athletics and academics exceptionally. We are grateful for this, but we are also grateful for the growing pains.

We would be remiss if we did not teach you that growing pains and obstacles that feel so tremendous now are mere steppingstones and lessons for more significant life challenges. You are being prepared for personal growth, and you may not always understand the journey. You may be tempted at times to change paths but know that God is your light when you are lost or if you feel a sense of darkness. We are here to help guide you and will always be here to remind you of who you are and that you are loved without conditions.

You are now embarking on this journey that leads to manhood. We trust that you will lean on your faith and pray fervently. We are always praying for you son. You are destined for greatness and a life full of your heart’s desire. You have everything you need to achieve your goals.

Chin up….Shoulders back, one foot in front of the other, LET’S GOOOOOOO!!

Dear Aidan,

Words cannot begin to describe how proud we are of you. It feels like yesterday we were holding your hand as you took your first steps, and now, here you are, about to embark on a whole new journey in your life. As we sit here reflecting on your life, we are filled with so many emotions.

First, watching you grow into the young, Christian man you are becoming has been one of the greatest joys of our lives and we are filled with an overwhelming sense of pride. We’ve watched you work hard, grow and persevere through various challenges in your life and whether you realize it or not, you’ve shown such incredible grace, strength and resilience through it all. At the same time, we are also filled with excitement. We truly look forward to where life takes you. Your future is so bright, and there are so many wonderful and amazing opportunities waiting for you. We are confident you will approach each new phase with fortitude, integrity and the confidence knowing God is guiding you through it all. Finally, our heart not only swells with pride and excitement, but also with gratitude. We are truly grateful to be your parents. You are not only a wonderful example to your siblings, but to us, as well. Your fun and good-natured spirit bring such light, love, and laughter to our family, and you are an inspiration to us all.

Most importantly, through all of the various emotions we feel, one thing is absolutely clear – we love you so very much – more than any words can ever express. As you embark on your new journey in life, know that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. No matter where your journey takes you, know that we will always be here, cheering you on and supporting you every step of the way.

With all our love, Mom and Dad

Dear Aidan,

As you take your steps into the next phase of your life I am reminded of where you started and how your life has been marked by tackling whatever trial has been placed in front of you. As a baby you had to fight to breathe. As a toddler you had to understand how to be acknowledged. As a child you had to learn how to take on academics. As a young teenager you had to comprehend how to deal with loss. And now as a man you are about to deal with the world from an entirely new perspective.

Watching you fight to breathe was tough and there were many nights that I recall staying awake and seeing your determination to get through the evening and make it to the next day. That experience taught you how to properly use your air and make use of all that you had and not be afraid in a challenging time. This led to you finding your voice and you always standing up for what you believed was right even if it was just you speaking.

Once you entered school, you quickly stood out among your peers as one of the smartest kids in the room. I’ll never forget the time you answered all the questions during an academic competition and when the one kid got a wrong you let her know that mistake was not acceptable. When people in your life started to leave your everyday experiences, I watched you show love and compassion to both your siblings and your parents. It was by far one of the most mature and powerful things you have ever done.

The pride I have for you as you embark on this next step in your journey cannot be put into words. Just know that I have seen you grow from a struggling baby boy to a determined and strong young man that has no boundaries and can do anything he puts his mind to. I love you so much and I cannot wait to see the next part of your journey. You are much more than just my son, I now consider you my friend.

Dear Ethan,

We want to take this moment, here and now, to express how very proud we are of you. Our words cannot express the amount of joy and light you bring to our family and your energy is ever enlighting and contagious. You have a wonderful way of seeing the world, always full of fun, laughter, and overall good nature.

From the moment you were born, we have been blessed to watch you grow and it is such a joy and a privilege to see how you have navigated the journey of life with grace, fortitude, and purpose. We thank God everyday for the gift of you. We are proud of the young man you are becoming and are proud to see you hold onto God’s unchanging hand, no matter the circumstance.

Ethan, we want you to know who deeply we love you. You are an incredible son –thoughtful, hardworking, and full of heart. Your determination, kindness, character, and the way you exemplify resilience and grit through every challenge is awe-inspiring and a wonderful example to us all. It’s been such a blessing and a privilege to watch you grow, not only in knowledge, but also in character. The man you are today is one of our greatest joys.

Dear Ethan,

You son, are ready to move to your next phase of life. When you came into this world you always had a quiet strength about yourself. You always had a determination to fight and take on challenges that most would back down from. I’ve seen you show love and determination to help those who needed help. When it was time to deal with loss you made sure that no one was left behind. Now as man you are about to take all that you have learned and accomplished to go and make great waves in this world.

As you move forward into this new season of life, know that we are here for you – always. We believe in you and we know that God has amazing things planned for your future. No matter where life takes you, always know that we will be right here with you, cheering you on and loving you every step of the way.

When you were a baby you chose to be the child that didn’t have to use your words to be heard. You would always show up and be in place to make things happen. As a young child I watched you take on the biggest kids in basketball even though you were one of the smallest out there. When you started school you knew you were funny and told your preschool teacher that the sound a dog makes was “Bow wow wow, yippi yo, yippi yay!” because you knew it would make her laugh. I have watched you stand up to those that would harass others in school. I’ve even watched you step away and tell people when you needed time to yourself. I’ve watched you show so much love to your siblings and your parents when we all dealt with loss. So much so that I have found myself looking to you to understand what needs to be done at certain times.

We couldn’t be prouder of the man you’ve become, and we are so grateful to have you as our son. You are a true blessing in our lives, and we look forward to seeing all of the wonderful things God has planned for you.

With all our love, Mom and Dad

Pride is the word that comes to mind when I think of the man that is leaving my home and going out into the world but that is not enough. The power and display of maturity and love and determination that you show in your everyday life is astounding. I am bursting at the seams in anticipation of how you approach this next phase of your journey. I love you son. You have been a great son but you are an even better friend.

FUN/UNIQUE FACT ABOUT YOU: Named after my grandfather, Dr. Logan Horton, who was the first African American ENT to practice in the State of Louisiana

Dear Logan,

Eighteen years ago, we were excited to welcome our third son to our family. We had been through this twice before with your older brothers, so we were clearly veteran boy parents by this point; or so we thought. Just when we thought we had the blueprint down, you changed our lives in the most wonderful ways possible. As well as being a unique blessing, you have broadened our horizons as parents, and as you began your journey, you took us to places we had never been before.

From a very early age, it was clear that you wanted to experience everything. In elementary school, you were an avid reader, absorbing information at an astounding rate. Your interests ranged from astronomy, bird watching, coin collecting, and caring for a variety of animals, including your pet turtle Red, your curiosity was not limited to your academic pursuits. We were at every sports practice and game, whether it was football, basketball, lacrosse or wrestling. We cheered you on from the sideline, while amazed at how effortlessly you were able to excel in each sport. And finally, we went along with you through your journey of the arts and music. While playing in the school symphonic band, the marching band and the pep band, you mastered the clarinet, saxophone and percussion instruments. You excelled in your musical pursuits, and your efforts led to you being selected for the All West Tennessee Band and performing a solo at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

As your parents, we are aware of your capabilities and your talents, and you still amaze us every day. The only thing that overshadows your talents and achievements is the absolutely amazing young man that you’ve become. You are principled, centered in your morality and Christian beliefs, and you show so much love and compassion for your family and friends. These first 18 years have been far more than either of us could’ve ever expected and you have made us so very proud. We know we will continue to be amazed as your journey continues to unfold.

“For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

.

Little George,

Congratulations to you! This is a very momentous occasion that has been a rite of passage for men in our family for decades. Although you may not see its importance today, our prayer is that you fondly look back on the memories of the last few months with pride and affection.

Although you will always be “Little George” to us, make no mistake that we acknowledge and celebrate the young man that you have become. These last four years in particular have drawn us closer together as we embraced a new beginning in a new place. As you now transition to the next phase of your life, remember the lessons that you learned and “earned”. God has truly blessed us with a smart, caring and compassionate young man. For that we are truly thankful. Our best advice to you as you move forward as a young man is found in the poem, “Myself” by Edgar Guest.

I have to live with myself and so I want to be fit for myself to know. I want to be able as days go by, always to look myself straight in the eye; I don’t want to stand with the setting sun and hate myself for the things I have done.

I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf a lot of secrets about myself and fool myself as I come and go into thinking no one else will ever know the kind of person I really am, I don’t want to dress up myself in sham. I want to go out with my head erect I want to deserve all men’s respect; but here in the struggle for fame and wealth I want to be able to like myself.

I don’t want to look at myself and know I am bluster and bluff and empty show. I never can hide myself from me; I see what others may never see; I know what others may never know, I never can fool myself and so, whatever happens I want to be self respecting and conscience free.

In closing, remember to stay focused, keep it real and keep the “main thing, the main thing.”

FUN/UNIQUE FACT ABOUT YOU: Favorite Colors: Black and Red; Favorite SongFreestyle by Lil’ Baby; Nickname: ATL Jacob

Dear Baby Jake,

As I sit down to write this letter to you, I find myself reflecting on the last 18 years—from the moment you almost came into this world, during rush hour on the Washington, D.C. Beltway, with your dad speeding through traffic to get us to the National Naval Medical Center. Thank God we made it just in time! You were born at the “President’s Hospital” and from the start, you waited for nothing and no one to make your entrance into this world.

I cannot begin to express how proud I am of you and the immense joy you bring me as your mother. I’ve watched you grow—from the baby who never wanted me to put him down, to the toddler who loved wearing mittens year-round, to the middle schooler who couldn’t get enough of sports, and now to the high school senior stepping boldly into the world of fashion and modeling.

Congratulations on your acceptance into the Barbizon School of Fashion and Modeling. You’ve accomplished so much already, and I’ve seen so much maturity and growth in you, especially during your senior year living with Mama Rosa in Memphis. Your decision to leave Atlanta for your final year of high school showed incredible independence, strength, and resilience.

Letting you go was one of the hardest things your dad and I have ever done. I never imagined not being with you for every step of your senior year. Not being able to attend all of your final high school events was incredibly tough. But I want you to know I was always with you— mentally and spiritually—even when I couldn’t be there physically.

You’ve faced challenges and obstacles, but you’ve overcome them with grace and determination. You’ve stayed true to yourself, followed your dreams, and most importantly, you haven’t allowed anyone to define your path. You’re learning, as you’ve said, that not everyone is your friend or in your corner—and I hope those lessons have helped you develop a discerning spirit that will serve you well.

Never let anyone question your worth, your value, or your place in this world. You are destined for greatness. Your ancestors—Granddaddy Blue and Granddaddy Virgil—are surely smiling down on you with pride. Mam Rosa and Grandma Barbara are here cheering you on every step of the way. Your siblings—Billy, Elyse and Lucky Bella—will always have your back.

You have a strong foundation and you are ready for whatever the world brings. God has not brought you this far to leave you. Keep growing, keep challenging yourself, and always surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. When the weight of the world feels heavy, turn to God for strength and—as your dad always says—“See it Through.”

In the beginning, letting you go felt unimaginable, but in the end, it turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to you. You locked in, stayed focused and truly thrived. You had the time and space to discover yourself and I had the chance to learn more about you too. The growth, the maturity—I see it all.

My goal has always been for you to be happy and to graduate with dignity and pride. Not perfection—because none of us are perfect—but growth, integrity, and joy. And we made the right decision. It has been an emotional but wonderful journey. I have enjoyed it all.

Jacob, the world is yours to conquer. As I’ve often told you, “Always believe in yourself.” Never give up on yourself, because I never will. I’m so thankful to be your mother, and I cannot wait to see you continue to achieve and make us all proud. Time for your next steps my son. “ATL Jacob” is college Bound!

Continue to be confident, and embrace life with our family foundations of God, family, and knowledge. In the midst of adversity, use your resources, make wise choices, and persevere. Dear My Sweet Boy Landon

I can hardly believe the day has come for you to graduate from high school, my last baby. It feels like I was swaddling you, calming you because you were afraid of canned biscuits (lol), watching you speak your first sentence. Yes, you skipped the first words and went straight to sentences. Now, you are about to step boldly into the world, and my heart swells with pride.

I’ll never forget how assuredly you won as the student of the year in second grade and gave your speech, and it was at that moment that you confirmed how incredible you indeed are. Watching you grow through your challenges, celebrating your victories, and witnessing the thoughtful man you’ve become brings me endless joy.

As you walk across that stage, turn your tassel, and meet this milestone, I want you to remember that this moment is just a glimpse of your promise. You have worked diligently and faced obstacles with such grace. The world is yours, and I can’t wait to see you shine. Some elements in the world are proven to either make you or break you. Trust, God has a way of bringing sound to the most deaf ear, sight to the most blind eye, & sense to the most simple mind. God is so amazing, so I am not worried.

Embrace every new experience, chase your dreams with passion, and know that it’s okay to make mistakes along the way—each one is a bridge to greatness. I believe in you with all my heart.

Always know that no matter where life takes you, I am your greatest ally (until you get married), cheering you on every step of the way. You are more than capable of all things, amazing things. The possibilities for your future are endless, and the universe is so blessed to have you.

Congratulations, my dear. I am so grateful I can be your mom and experience such joy. God is so good.

With all my love,

Baptist hosted the BLACK MEN IN WHITE COATS YOUTH SUMMIT to inspire and support minorities interested in pursuing medical and science careers.

One of the most important ways Baptist Memorial Health Care strives to improve health care in the Mid-South is by helping middle school, high school and college students envision themselves future medical providers.

Our Black Men in White Coats: Building Diverse Health Care Professionals program inspires young minds to explore health care careers through workshops, speakers’ series and mentoring from Baptist’s health care professionals. Our goal is to encourage more people of color to attend medical school.

For more information about our program and upcoming events, please visit baptistu.edu/BaptistUHealthCORE

We are proud to support the Shelby County ( TN) Links, Incorporated Leadership Academy.

Thank You For Supporting The 2025 Beautillion Experience

RYAN ANTHONY JAMES

I have only just a minute. Only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can’t refuse it. Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it. But it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it. Give account if I abuse it….

Just a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it.

Aiden & Ethan Johnson
