We’ve doubtless heard that quote many times, but what does it mean? In today’s language, it’s all about authenticity.

Authenticity is acting in accordance with one’s true self. Being authentic means behaving in congruence with one’s values, beliefs, motives and personality dispositions.

Everyone has a personality. It is a blending of traits, thought patterns, behaviors … all taken together. An authentic person is true, reliable, dependable, faithful, trustworthy, accurate, genuine and realistic.

Authenticity is more than just a popular buzzword these days – it is a way of living that many strive for in their personal and professional lives. The problem is that we live in a society that tries to get us to conform to the dominant culture, taking away our authenticity.

As American poet e.e. cummings said many years ago: “To be nobody but myself – in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make me somebody else – means to fight the hardest battle any human can fight, and never stop fighting.”

Authenticity is a cornerstone of any

successful relationship, both personal and professional. In the sales world, it is no different. Authenticity is about being genuine in your interactions with clients and colleagues. It is about being true to yourself and your values and conveying that honesty in every deal you make and every promise you deliver.

For me, authenticity in sales comes down to trust, long-term relationships and consistency. Authenticity fosters trust, the bedrock of any business transaction. If your clients believe in you, they are more likely to believe in what you are selling.

Authentic interactions lead to stronger, more resilient business relationships. People want to do business with those they feel are real and relatable.

Being authentic means you are the same person in every situation. Clients and colleagues know what to expect from you, which builds confidence in your consistency.

So how do you demonstrate authenticity?

Three ways – transparency, listening and personal touch. Be open about what you can and cannot do for your customers.

Don’t over promise and underdeliver. Show genuine interest in your customers’ needs and concerns. Active listening can go a long way in showing that you care. Share appropriate personal stories or insights when they can add value to the conversation. This can humanize interactions and create deeper connections.

People remember how you made them feel and being genuine leaves a lasting positive impression.

Be a differentiator. In a world where many people try to “sell” themselves as something they are not, being authentic can set you apart from the competition.

There is a personal satisfaction that comes from knowing you’ve been true to yourself and others. It is not just about making

a sale; it is about how you make the sale.

Authenticity isn’t just nice to have; it is a must-have in the sales profession. It is about making real connections, being a person of integrity, and ultimately, it’s about being the kind of salesperson that customers want to return to time and time again.

Author and motivational speaker Simon Sinek offers this food for thought: “Authenticity is about imperfection. And authenticity is a very human quality. To be authentic is to be at peace with your imperfections. The great leaders are not the strongest, they are the ones who are honest about their weaknesses. The great leaders are not the smartest; they are the ones who admit how much they don't know. The great leaders can't do everything; they are the ones who look to others to help them. Great leaders don't see themselves as great; they see themselves as human.”

I am inspired by that assessment. Sinek is telling us we don’t have to be perfect, but we need to be the best we can be. We can acknowledge our weaknesses, but we work with others who can help fill in our blanks. His words are both comforting and challenging.

So whether or not you are a fan of Shakespeare, keep his words at the front of your brain. If you wouldn’t want to be your own friend or your own customer, it’s time to check your authenticity – truthfully.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Locusts

The first book of the Holy Bible, gives accounts of the damage caused by plagues of locusts. Since that time, there have been many stories of devastation caused by grasshoppers that turned into locusts.

We can search historical documents as old as can be found and there will be mention of locust plagues. Even though they have been showing up for those many years, we still know very little about how and why they occur. Grasshoppers are a very common insect in our summer fields.

A change in weather patterns makes these common pests turn into massive flocks of flying devastation that destroys every green plant in its wake. The swarms come in clouds that will cover sunlight. They arrive so fast that it is impossible to do adequate preparations for defense. They are so hungry that they will consume clothing. They cover the ground with a thick layer of their bodies similar to cement.

Minnesota experienced the locust plague several times before the greatest locust problem which lasted from 1873 to 1877.

To fight the locusts, many strange solutions were tried. Some potential solutions included digging ditches in the field which would hopefully gather the locust, followed by covering them with dirt. To make the ditches more effective, items were dragged across the field to herd the locusts into the ditches,

where fires were started to burn those in the ditches. Bars were covered with molasses and dragged across the fields to cause the locus to stick to them. A bounty was created, which paid $.25 for a gallon of grasshopper eggs and a dollar for a bushel of grasshoppers. A bushel of grasshoppers was usually collected with a dip net dragged across the plants, The 1877 Minnesota Legislature created a draft which included all males from age 21 to 60, who were required to spend one day each week catching locust and civil penalties were imposed if the individual didn't abide by the rules. This applied to men living in counties that were in the locust infected area, which had grown to 40 counties. April 26, 1877 was a designated prayer day, the stores and banks were closed and all citizens in the affected area were to spend the day praying for relief from the locusts. A couple of months later in the summer of 1877, the locusts disappeared.

It's not certain where they went.

During the depression years, there were some smaller infestations of locust, but not anywhere as bad as the 1874 to 1877 infestation. In 2020 there was a severe locust invasion, which was in East Africa and went east to India. This was an especially large area, which caused a large number of starvation deaths. Some individuals fried the locusts and mixed them with rice to make a hot meal. There are some individuals that season fried locusts, salt them and create a snack. This doesn't sound like something to snack with beer, but to each their own.

The chance of a locust invasion seems to be quite remote, but it has been in the world throughout its history. The speed of the oncoming invasion could take a day and even with our new scientific potions, we would face several problems.

Barbara “Barb” Krebs

Barbara “Barb” Krebs, age 96 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrating.

Entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany.

Barbara Ziemba was born October 3, 1927 in Brockway Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Ignatius and Mary (Patrias) Ziemba. She was the youngest of eleven children.

Though her younger years came with hardship, mom always was grateful for the blessings in her life. On August 7, 1948, she married the love of her life, Donald “Don” Krebs whom she met at Dreamland Hall in Holdingford, MN. Together, they raised a family on a family farm NW of Albany. Barb was a homemaker, always busy helping with the farm and raising their ten children.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, the Christian Mothers, volunteered at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Mother Seton Store, and was a member of the Seven Dolors Parish choir.

Mom had a great talent for sewing and baking; making many beautiful clothes and outfits at first for her children. She also made many pans of delicious polish coffee cakes and molasses Christmas cookies. She loved gardening and growing plants both inside and out. Barb was a gracious lady with a kind heart and a strong faith in God. She will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Bonita (Ken) Wright of Maple Grove, Jean (Paul) Danielson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Loren (Sandy Wolf) Krebs of Sonoita, Arizona, Tom (Lori) Krebs of Melrose, Terry (Judy) Krebs of Albany, Twila (Rick) Bourgon of Bloomington, Tammie (Tim) Sharp of Detroit Lakes, Deb (Mike) Peters of Avon, and Troy (Kelly) Krebs of Albany; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Krebs on October 14, 2016; parents; infant daughter Maureen Krebs; sisters and brothers, Justine Kostreba, Dorothy Gallus, Theresa Meyer, Catherine Drury, and Jacob, Frank, John, Albert, Lawrence, and Sylvester Ziemba.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

J o s e p h Raymond Claseman, 94, passed away on January 26, 2024, at the Little Falls Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN. Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Joe was born on February 26, 1929. He attended country school near the family farm and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1946.

After graduating high school, Joe worked on the family farm. He married Lila M. Spieker on February 11, 1950. After leaving the family farm, Joe owned a Massey Harris (Massey Ferguson) dealership in Long Prairie for several years. They purchased a farm 5 miles southwest of Browerville. Joe and Lila raised 8 children during the 25 years they lived on the farm.

While farming, he also sold Northrup King Seed for 11 years. Joe and Lila retired from the farm in 1983 and moved to Long Prairie, where they built a house and lived for 40 years.

In his ‘retirement’ years, he taught the ’55 Alive’ Program. He was a licensed real estate agent and appraiser but probably bought more homes than he sold, as he and mom liked to fix them up to be ‘rent-to-own’ or sold. He served on the Todd County Board of Commissioners for 8 years and the Long Prairie City Council for 11 years. He was a contract hauler of cars and equipment for Hillig and Midwest Implement and delivered flowers for the local florist. He enjoyed spreading the joy of flowers in the community. He was an active member of the Long Prairie Lions Club and was a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Joe loved his family. He was very proud of all his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Joe loved to play cards, go fishing, visit with friends, and snack on popcorn, peanuts, and chips/salsa. His wife, Lila, used to say, “He never gossiped while playing cards – that was serious business!” He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Joseph (Joe) was preceded in death by his parents, Anton & Elizabeth; his wife of 73 years, Lila; sons: Charles and Raymond; brothers: Alvin, Francis, Alroy, and Wilfred; sisters: Genevieve Schrenk and Evelyn Carstensen.

Joe is survived by his children: Lee (Doreen) Claseman, Mary (Tom Letsch) Claseman, Gloria (Gordon) Miller, Bryan (Barbara) Claseman, Dorothy (Robert) Briscoe, Deloris (Danny) Peyton, and Rose (Kenneth) Thunder, daughter-in-law, Donna Claseman; 22 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; brother Alois Clasemann and sister, Elizabeth Tinker; sisters-in-law Marie (William) Weiland and Roselyn (LaVerne) Stadtherr.

If you’ve ever done that, you’ve already been a mentor. Tutoring is frequently associated with mentoring. It’s a bit more specific when it comes to what is being taught or why the specific “something” is being taught.

Many of us help each other learn, grow, and make progress without even realizing it. That’s informal mentoring- available most anywhere.

Irene R. Felling

Irene R. Felling, age 97 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 29 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Irene Rose Fellling was born November 13, 1926 in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Peter and Mary (Jacobs) Orth. She began working as a bookeeper and sales lady for Mary Ann Clothing Store in Sauk Centre. When they went out of business she began working for Grossman License Bureau. On July 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Felling at the Church of St. John in Wahpeton, North Dakota. Irene had a gift of hospitality and compassion. For years she took care of her parents and her brother Julian and together with Tony, they took care of her brother Roland for many years. Irene and Tony made a good team by helping each other out.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors includer her husband, Tony Felling of Sauk Centre; niece, Kathleen Felling; nephews, Richard Felling and his daughter, Ella and Dennis (Veronica) Felling and their daughters Venelli and Isadora.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Julian Orth and Roland Orth; sister, Lucille Felling; brother-in-law, Ben Felling; and nephew, Duane Felling.

Formal mentoring can come via many programs for all ages. A variety of mentoring programs have become more readily available in our communities over the years.

Foster Grandparents are “classroom grandparents” who mentor and tutor thousands of children across the United States, including in MN communities where you and your loved ones live. These children can be ages birth to 21. The adult volunteers can be 55- or 63- or 88- or, even older. They’re trained by Foster Grandparent Program staff, and then they’re guided by classroom/program staff as to which children to focus on and what tasks to do with them.

Who are the kids that get support from the FGP’s positive, caring, and unstoppable classroom volunteers?

They’re your kids, or your grandkids.

Think back! Maybe it was you…! Did you have a classroom Grandma or Grandpa… an older adult who made reading fun, who gave you snacks, helped with art or math, or who sat by you to help you focus? (The Foster Grandparent Program has been running successfully here since 1965!)

Dear Debbie, When I made the decision to get intentional with my money, I just used cash.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 1994 Stealth RT without the turbocharged engine. I have gone through 2 new batteries in a short period of time. Is it possible that a failing alternator can ruin a battery? If so, I would like to know if there is a way to check if the alternator has actually failed. Are there specific testing methods that can be used to narrow the cause down? I listen to your show faithfully.

-Karen in Fargo, ND Dear Karen, A failing alternator can ruin a battery in a short period of time. If it’s overcharging or is draining current when off it will discharge the battery after it sits for extended periods.

Even if it does not sit long enough to run completely down it can cause the battery to fail due to its heavy discharge/charge cycles.

To check the alternator, you need to have a charging system analysis done with a charging system tester. This will show the internal operation of the alternator, diodes, field, and ability to charge at idle and at higher rpm but will not show a drain. To find a drain they will need to perform a current drain test. Most shops with this type of tool will also have an electronic battery testing tool. It is possible that you have had a run of bad luck with two bad batteries. It has happened to us in our shop before.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I drive a Ford F150 which I bought new in 2004. I have been hearing some news from other Ford owners in my area who have had some issues with cam phasers failing in their engines. My question is what should I be doing to give me the best chance of preventing this from happening to my engine? I drive the truck only a few miles to work every day and change the oil about every four months.

Dear Dean, The 5.4 has been used in hundreds of thousands of Fords without issue but a few have been known to develop issues with the cam phasers or lose just a bit of oil pressure which keeps the phasers from operating properly. Repairs involve phaser replacement or sometimes an entire engine. The best way to prevent this from happening is with routine oil changes. Ford recommends using their factory specified oil or something of better ratings and a Ford genuine filter. There are copies of this filter on the market so make sure you are getting the genuine Ford product. As for time intervals we would suggest changing the oil at three months. The short trips are harder on the oil and engine as the engine does not get up to operating temperature for a long enough period to completely burn off all traces of moisture in the oil which can result in sludge in the engine.

Grey Eagle Township • January 8, 2024 Call to Order: Mike Rohe called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe, Alan Roering and John Young. Erv Herdering was also present.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Mike asked if there were additions to the agenda. John made motion to approve agenda. Alan made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: John made the motion to accept the December 4, 2023 Township minutes. Alan made the second. All in favor. Motion passed.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for December. Claims list included claims 3902-3912 for a total of $4,847.78. Alan made the motion to pay the claims. John made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Mail included P&Z, a letter from BBL Association and Melrose School flyer.

The financial report was presented, John made the motion to approve the financial report, Alan made the second. Motion carried.

Reorganization list was reviewed with changes to mileage rate. All other items will stay the same. John made the motion to accept the reorganization schedule, Alan made the second, All in

Road and Bridge Report: John will share information about the tree policy at the next meeting. John presented an estimate from Jeremy Scherping to do more brush cutting. Possible areas include 341st, and east end of Brakken, possible west ditch of 337th also a large tree along 335th that should come down. Alan made the motion to approve the $25,000 for additional brush trimming. John made the second, all in favor.

Motion carried. John reported he had called Erv about the potholes on Arden.

Additional agenda item: Mary Ann will send an invoice to Elmdale Township for the East end of Brakken/Elmdale portion. Audit meeting was set for Feb. 5, 2024 before the monthly meeting.

Mary Ann will check on whether we need a resolution for the Sick and Safe Time policy.

Caucuses offer Minnesotans a voice in the DFL Party, and I encourage all Minnesotans to attend their precinct caucuses and advocate for the change they want to see in their communities,” said Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin.

Presidential Primary Voting Absentee balloting for the Minnesota presidential nomination primary (PNP) is underway. Absentee voting began January 19, with the PNP election taking place on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

The purpose of the presidential nomination primary is for voters to choose the presidential candidate they wish their party to nominate to be on the November general election ballot. When going in to vote, voters must state their party preference – DFL, Republican or Legal Marijuana Now. There are separate ballots for each party and the voter will be given only one ballot for their selected party. On the ballot will only be the one office, president. Party choice is private, except that it is required by law to be shared with the party chair selected by the voter after the election.

Anyone wishing to vote absentee can do so at the Stearns County Service Center, 3301 County Road 138 in Waite Park or at the City’s Lake George Municipal Complex, 1101 7th Street South in St. Cloud during normal business hours. The City of St. Cloud has Stearns County ballots only. To request an absentee ballot by mail, go to mnvotes.org or call the Stearns County election office at 320-6563920. Voters can also track an absentee ballot, check registration, or find their polling place at mnvotes.org.

Absentee voting continues until March 4.

The presidential nomination primary will be Tuesday, March 5, 2024 with polls open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Anyone who is getting a mail ballot would have received a post card recently alerting them that their ballot would be arriving by mail. From the Desk of Pastor Bruce If I had to title this article it would be “Disappointments." I am positive that every reader has had many disappointments in their life. Many times, life just does not go according to plan. Look at marriages for instance; the divorce rate among church goers is 52%, and for second marriages 60% of those get divorce and for third time marriages 73% get divorced. Disappointments? Absolutely!

Purchasing things online can be disappointing since we cannot look at or touch the items and many times it can end in fraud.

Some days you wake up and look outside and the weather is a disappointment, or for some reason you woke up grumpy.

There is one thing that I hope you are not disappointed in, “Eternity." Many people go on with life doing things their way, not really paying any attention to what God desires for their lives. But one day, and I believe very soon, Jesus is going to come back as the Judge. He has already come as the Redeemer, but when He steps into the Judge position, you will want to be known by God by then.

There are many who will pass away from this life into the next and stand before the judge and be horribly disappointed. Look
