FromtheStaffofHope(Teaching)HealthClinic andCFSOPSisters

There is a famous quotation that says that: "a sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, and a goldenthreadtothemeaningoflife."

I am indeed fortunate to be able to endorse these sentiments when I thinkandspeakofmysisterMarie.

Marie is one of the kindest, most unselfishpersonsthatIknowandthis was in evidence since she was a child. If I had any doubt of this, it was dispelled by the constant support which she provided me in every step of my chosen path of Christian ministry.

Fromtheheartof

Archbishop

One shining example is her role in the establishing and sustaining of The Friends of Good Shepherd (FOGS), an organization that she founded and headed for over twenty-six years to complement a charitable organization of that name that I had established in Jamaica.Herexceptionalorganizational strengthtranslatedintoannualinspiring fundraising functions which raised wellneeded funds and enabled the provision of invaluable services in the areas of health, education, and social distressinJamaica.

Further, when the foundation embarked on the ambitious project of the construction of a medical and residential clinic in Montego Bay, my sister, and her team pulled out all the stops and for the almost eight years of that project, FOGS was a solid and faithful donor of funds, favors, and unswervingencouragement.

I cannot say enough about my sister as a family person. She was a dutiful daughter to our parents, a loving and caring sister to us siblings, an exemplary mother, and grandmother, and as is widely known, a devotedwife.

TheHolyBiblepresentsaclearpictureofa womanofGodinthepassageofProverbs 31 where it recites the attributes of a virtuouswoman.Itdeclares:

As she demits the leadership post of FOGS, I wish to record my deep appreciation for her sterling contribution to that entity and the Good Shepherd Foundation and to wish her good health, much happiness, andblessings.

FERDINANDMAHFOODAND THEINSPIREDFOUNDINGOF FOODFORTHEPOOR

Ferdinand “Ferdy” Mahfood’s religious conversion in 1976 was the inspiration behind the founding of Food For The Poor, planting the seeds of love and devotion 41 years ago thatwillknownoend.

With the love and support of his family, Mr. Mahfood established Food For The Poor in Florida on February 12, 1982. The organization initially sent resources to Jamaica, where he had observed the plight of people suffering from poverty, disease and the impact of naturaldisasters.

Inhisownwords,Mr.Mahfoodonceexplained what was the catalyst for the birth of the charity.

“This is not about any one of us,” said Mr. Mahfood, a devout Catholic. “This is about God. And Food For The Poor is an answer to God.”

Mr. Mahfood, 85, died peacefully on February 26,surroundedbyhisfamilyinprayer.

As the charity expanded, Ferdy and his wife, Patty, traveled throughout the Caribbean, bringing resources to countless people in need. FFTP officially launched its operation in Jamaica in June 1983 and created a model that would be replicated in other parts of the CaribbeanandLatinAmerica.

In a Jamaica Gleaner interview in 2012, Mr. Mahfood said there was no way he could have foretoldFoodForThePoor’ssuccess.

"Ineverdreamtitwouldhavebecomewhatitis today,” he said. “Not in my wildest imagination wouldIhavebelievedthatitwouldcometothis ...culminatingintoday.”

In the article, Mr. Mahfood quickly cleared up anymisconceptionthatitwasallabouthim.

"The organization was started by four brothers Sam,Joe,Robin, andmyself,"hesaid."Soit'snot just Ferdinand Mahfood's efforts, it's the efforts of the four brothers and all their children, and thatiswhathasbuiltit, andkeptittogether."

DEAR FRIENDS

ItiswithaheavyheartthatIhavestepped down as President of Friends of Good ShepherdInternational,Inc.duetopersonal reasons.

What started on the back porch of my brother, Tony’s house in 1996 has endured andgrownoverthepast26yearsundermy tenure. Archbishop Charles was just ordainedBishopofMontegoBayandhegot a few of his former parishioners from Jamaica to start this organization to raise fundsfortheDioceseofMontegoBay.

During the past twenty-six years, we have disbursed over US$1.5M in cash to various charities. In Jamaica, we have supported education,MustardSeedCommunities, the Good Shepherd Foundation of Montego Bay, the Good Shepherd Foundation Medical Centre, and Hope Hospice (now TheVillageofHope). Wehavealsomade numerous shipments of medical supplies, clothing, and toys to Jamaica. In addition, we have awarded numerous scholarships intheTri-CountyareasofFloridaandhave supported Haiti, Dominica, The Philippines, and the United States after catastrophic disasters.

Despitethemanyhoursspentsolicitingand organizingfundraisers,Itrulyenjoyedevery minute of it. It was really a labor of love. I have met many, many, many good and generous people along the way who have becomelifelongfriendsandIhavecometo recognizethemembersoftheOrganization asmyFOGSfamily.

MARIE BUTEAU

As I leave, I go with the uttermost confidence that the Organization will continue to exceed expectations. The leadership of this noble group is undoubtedly in great hands, and with God’s help I can assure you that the visionwillneverdim.

To all our members, supporters, friends, and advertisers who have stood with us overtheyears,Isayabigthankyou.Your contributions have changed so many lives, andforthisIwillbeforevergrateful.

Withlove!

Twenty-sixyearsofselflessservicetoa noble cause such as the Friends of Good Shepherd International Inc., (FOGS),isnoordinaryaccomplishment. Therefore, it is with profound gratitude that we acknowledge and commend Marie Buteau for her leadership and visionovertheseyears.

It’s amazing how ordinary people can achieveextraordinarygoalswhenclear vision, undaunting purpose, and the labor of love all combine. Who would have thought that what started in humble settings twenty-seven years ago (FOGS), would today be such a force in addressing the plights of the poor both locally and in Jamaica and beyond? Undoubtedly, the success of the organizationhasnotbeenanaccident. Under the leadership of the quiet, determined, andunassumingPresident, greatstrideshavebeenmade.AsMarie is quick to point out it was not always aneasyjourney, butitwasanamazing tenure.

This terrific leader embodies an insatiable passion for service, an indomitable spirit, and admirable diplomaticskills.Sheisrespectedfor her integrity and indefatigable attention to detail, attributes that have made her a friend and confidante to so many. We will certainlymisshertenacityintheface ofobstacles, herawesomegenerosity andofcourseherabilitytoempathize withthoseinneed.

My wife, Clover and I, will always remember our first mission trip to Jamaica, over twenty years ago which was coordinated by Marie. As new members of the organization then, we were amazed and inspired by the love shown to the delegation and particularly, our leader, by so manywhobenefittedfromtheworkof FOGS.

As we toured the various projects supported by our group, we were impressedbyherintimateknowledgeof the projects, the way she embraced abandonedchildren, andtheeasewith which she greeted those at the Hope Hospice, which was then a facility primarilyforpeopledyingofAIDS.

Marie has guided the organization through good and challenging times. She led with grace, humility, and honesty. She will always be remembered for her commitment to transparency, herkeensenseofrespect for those around her, and her fervent desiretoadvancetheworkofthegroup.

Spearheading fund-raising events for the construction of the Good Shepherd MedicalComplexinMontegoBay,which today serves thousands of patients in western Jamaica, is among the many highlights of her accomplishments. Marie has been a loyal ambassador who seeks no praise or glory for her work.

Due to her mentoring and visionary leadership,Iamproudtoinformyou that she has left the organization in capable hands. We are excited to haveMr.Ivan(Andrew)Foreman,as the new President. RememberingButch

Gordon “Butch” Stewart was not born to a life of privilege. He was a “man of the people”, a “local boy who made good”. His boyhood dream was to buy a boat as he had a fierce passion for the sea. To achieve thisdream, hecaughtfishtoselltothehotels.

According to Butch, his father was a very entertaining and humourous man. The house was always filled with laughter from his father’s many friends. He started high school as a boarder at Campion College but when his father could not afford the fees, he was sent to Columbus Heights School at St. Ann’s Bay, then later to St.Mary’sCollegeatAboveRocks.

His accomplishments, awards, legend and legacy are too numerous to list here. He worked for various companies as a salesman until he got a franchise to sellFeddersairconditionersandApplianceTraderswas born. Island wide delivery and service were his trademark as he supplied the hotels throughout Jamaica.

Butch, the businessman, is well known for his myriad monumental achievements. Butch the humanitarian is less well known as he was a humble man and did not do works of mercy and charity for publicity or selfaggrandizement.

The greatest legacy anyone can leave behind is a positive impact on the lives of others. The Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart left his footprints on the sands of time. He lived a very fruitful life guided by his love and passion for his beloved island of Jamaica.
