MESSAGE FROM HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL THE MOST HON. SIR PATRICK ALLEN ON, GCMG, CD, KSt.J
FOR FRIENDS OF GOOD SHEPHERD 28th ANNUAL GALA
I wish to send congratulations to The Friends of Good Shepherd International on their 28th Annual Gala. For twenty-eight years, they have tirelessly supported those in need, making a significant impact in the international Caribbean community. The Friends of Good Shepherd International, located in the beautiful sunshine state of Florida, have dedicated themselves to charity work and have successfully brought together people who care about making a difference in the lives of others.
Their influence extends beyond the diaspora, reaching as far as Jamaica, where they have facilitated several projects under their patronage. Despite the challenges of secularization and the constant evolving of society, The Friends of Good Shepherd International remain steadfast in their commitment to Christendom and freely give to all they encounter.
It is worth mentioning the vital role that The Friends of Good Shepherd International play in bringing together the Caribbean Diaspora for a common good. Through their efforts, they foster unity and collaboration among individuals from the Caribbean region, creating a strong sense of community and shared purpose. They play a crucial role in uniting the Caribbean Diaspora for a common cause.
I wish The Friends of Good Shepherd International great success in all their planned activities. I am confident that their upcoming endeavours will be truly memorable, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those they serve.
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our Annual Fundraiser for Friends of Good Shepherd International!
We were happy that we were able to host the first major fundraising event last year as we recovered from the effects of the Covid pandemic. With your support we were able to continue the important work of the Friends of Good Shepherd (FOGS), especially in the areas of education and health.
I thank the faithful members of FOGS, especially the new president, Mr. Andrew Foreman, who has taken over the helm from Mrs. Marie Buteau, who served so ably for more than twenty-five years. Under his leadership, we had a very successful fundraising gala last year. Mrs Marie Buteau received the welldeserved meritorious service award.
I thank our faithful benefactors and all those who contributed in some way to the work of the FOGS. I offer my prayerful thanks.
The health clinic in Montego Bay provided medical services to those in need. In order to improve the services provided, the GSF Board opened the “Theresa Grethel Thomas Room” as the new Heart Care Centre, furnished and refurbished by funding from the FOGS.
Our support of the apostolate of the Mustard Seed Communities allowed them to provide care and protection to the most vulnerable members of the society, including the physically and mentally challenged, pregnant teens and children affected by HIV/AIDS.
The Archbishop’s Education Fund, funded by the FOGS and the Partners of Good Shepherd over many years, continued to assist young Jamaicans out of poverty through education. We are proud and gratified to be able to contribute to the growth and education of our nation’s children with the help and support of all our generous donors.
Thank you for being here and for continuing to support the work of FOGS. We encourage young people to join the FOGS in our mission of service.
May God continue to bless you and your loved ones!

It is not possible to overstate the joy of collaborating with the members of Friends of Good Shepherd International Incorporated. Their generosity with time, talent, and treasure, I respect and admire. The greatfriendshipsthatwesharemakethegroupverypleasanttoworkwith.
The mission is to bring hope to the poor and disadvantaged by enabling the youth to prepare themselves for a better tomorrow primarily through sponsorship of educational opportunities for the young in the countries that we assist. Our mission includes continued assistance to health care and support to the disabled by donations to the Good Shepherd Medical Complex and Mustard Seed Communities. We also stretch a helping hand with emergency needs to other charities where a small donationcangoafarway.
In the past year, the Membership Committee has been highly active and introduced the honorary membercategoryatlastyear’sGalaandtheresponsehasbeengood, andIthankallwhogenerously joined that category, and we encourage others to do so. Our trip to Montego Bay, on November 22, 2023, was for relaxation at one of the All-Inclusive Hotels on the north coast of the beautiful island of Jamaica. We envisioned lazy days at the beach, going on a few tours, and watching gorgeoussunsetswhilesippingoncocktailswith thelittleumbrellas.
Littledidweknowthatourparents,Jacquesand Clover Davis had other plans in mind! In their persuasive way, they suggested that we could nevervisitMontegoBaywithoutpayingavisitto one of the projects supported by the Friends of GoodShepherdInternational,Inc.(FOGS). AssupportersofFOGSformanyyears, andmore currently as honorary members, it was only reasonablethatweagreedwiththissuggestion, andwhatablessingitwasforus!
It was a beautiful Friday morning in the tourist resort of Montego Bay when we boarded the JUTA bus, for our thirty-minute ride to the Good ShepherdFoundationMedicalComplex.Ourvery pleasant driver was obviously impressed as we told him of our association with the Medical Complex. Yes, he was fully aware of the work of the Good Shepherd Foundation of Montego Bay, particularly the GSF Medical Complex. As we approachedthebuildingsituatedontheBlessed SacramentpropertyinMontegoBay,wethought ofhowproudourparentsmusthavebeentobe a part of this project which now serves Western JamaicaandtheirhomecityofMontegoBay.
This is a day we will never forget. Mother Joy, Administrator; Jeannie Robinson Foster, Chairperson and other Executives of GSF; along withotherlocalleaderswereonhandtogiveus a big Jamaican welcome. The staff was very accommodating and all were full of gratitude forthesupportofFOGS.
As we toured the facility, we were impressed withthesacrificeofthosewhogaveselflesslyto erect the facility, and those who give selflessly in the service of the poor and needy of Jamaica.
However, it was obvious that there is still much moreworktobedone.Againstthisbackground, it is our prayer that we who are blessed with much will not hesitate to give much to support theworkofFOGS.
Our visit to the GSF Medical Complex was undoubtedly an opportunity to see first hand the incredible work being done through the supportofFOGS.FriendsofGoodShepherd International Inc. is doing a fabulous job in helpingthelessfortunateofoursocietyandwe urge you to support this organization. May God continue to bless us all! We are our brother’skeepers.
In January 2024, I returned to Jamaica, where I hadworkedatseveralmissionministriesforthe Roman Catholic Diocese of Montego Bay. One of the missions I was assigned to as chaplain was Blessed Assurance, an MSC orphanage, locatedoutsideMontegoBay,from2007to2011.
MSC administers thirteen orphanages across Jamaicawhichisasadcommentaryon Jamaican family life, a reality captured in the expression “Any man can be your father, but youhaveonlyonemother.”
A small group of Boston College alumni and friendsjoinedmetovisitMustardSeed Communities (MSC) and their orphanages acrosstheisland.
Our team spent seven nights at Sophie’s Place, an orphanage in Gordon Town, Kingston. In the morning, our team fed the children porridge and in the afternoon, we helped with their dinners of rice and peas and small pieces of chicken. We also played, held, and spoke with theyoungorphans.AtMatthew’sHouse, wemet youngmenwithHIV.Thereweplayeddominos. We also toured Mary’s Child, a center that is home to fourteen young pregnant girls. The Jamaican court sends the girls to Mary’s Child where they learn how to care for their child. At the end of our week-long visit, we spent a relaxingafternoonatabeachinOchoRios.
Our time was a spiritual and physical retreat. I hope that more people will go to Jamaica to visit the Mustard Seed Communities and open their hearts (and wallets) to support this welldeservingmission.
In the late 1960s, I embarked on a journey to Jamaica, driven by a deep-seated desire to serve as a missionary. Inspired by the story of Damien of Molokai, I was eager to follow in his footstepsandbringtheGospelofJesusChristto those in need. Despite doubts and challenges, I found myself at Hansen Home in Spanish Town, whereIbeganmymissionarywork.
My time at Hansen Home was marked by transformative experiences. I quickly learned to communicatewiththeresidents, adoptinganew language and mindset that prioritized respect and dignity for every individual. From sorting nails in a sweltering closet to teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes School, I embraced the challengesandjoysofservingthecommunity.
As my journey continued, I became involved in education, teaching at various schools across Jamaica. From St. Catherine Primary School to PortAntonioPrimary,Iencounteredovercrowded classrooms, societal issues, and moments of profound connection with my students. Through it all, I remained committed to my mission of spreadingloveandknowledge.
Despite facing personal safety concerns during times of political unrest and witnessing the struggles of the Jamaican people, I remained steadfast in my dedication to serving others. My experiences in Jamaica taught me the importance of resilience, compassion, and the powerofeducationintransforminglives.
LookingbackonmytimeinJamaica,Iamfilled with gratitude for the opportunity to walk alongside the Jamaican people, to learn from them, and to carry their spirit with me always. As I continue my journey, I am inspired to advocate for volunteerism and education, recognizingtheprofoundimpactitcanhaveon individualsandcommunitiesalike.

The history of our long-standing place in the community and partnership withtheGoodShepherdFoundation:
The Brenda Strafford Foundation's Village of Hope includes a 19-bed, residential care facility committed to providing holistic, patient-centered care and services to people with long-term care needs in Montego Bay.
Established almost 30 years ago, the care facility opened in 1997 under the management of the Good Shepherd Foundation as a hospice dedicated to providing dignified care for patients at the end of life. In 2004, a long-standing partnership was formed with the Good Shepherd Foundation and Brenda Strafford Foundation (a Canadian charitable organization that supports the development of healthcare in the Caribbean).
The Brenda Strafford Foundation incorporated the Village of Hope as a registered charity in Jamaica in 2010. Since 2018, Village of Hope has been the sole operator of the residential care services that have evolved to now provide care and support for residents with longer term needs.

Renowned as a quintessential community activist, Einez devoted herself to helping others with a quiet yet dignified demeanor, her loss deeply felt by not only her family but also by the entire community.
As the beloved wife of George Yap, CEO of LEASA Industries, Einez was a devoted mother and proud grandmother. Currently, I find I can be wholly devoted to my studies, diligently working towards my academic aspirations because yourinvaluablesupporthaspositivelyimpacted my educational journey. These funds have served to give me the freedom to concentrate solely on my studies, without the anxiety about tuitionfees.

In the chronicles of Friends of Good Shepherd International, Inc, the narrative of Monty and Elaine Kong, affectionately known as the dynamic duo, resonates as a testament to unwavering dedication and selfless service. As theyembarkonatransitiontoreducetheirroles within the organization, their enduring impact remainsetchedintheannalsofourhistory.
InJanuaryofthisyear, aftermorethanadecade of invaluable contributions to the core ideals and objectives of FOGS, Monty and Elaine, serving as Treasurer and Secretary respectively, tendered their decision to step back from their roles. To them, we extend our heartfelt gratitude andappreciation.
Theentranceofthisunassumingcoupleintothe FOGS sphere, facilitated by the organization's Founder and former Bishop of Montego Bay, Charles Dufour, marked a pivotal moment usheringinaneweraofvitalityanddynamism.
Monty, with his seasoned expertise as an accountant and a wit as sharp as his analytical mind, quicklyemergedasacatalystforprogress within the organization. His tenure as an assistant to the Treasurer, Al Garel, showcased hiscommitmentandaptitudeforleadership.
The symbiotic partnership of Monty and Elaine infused FOGS with a renewed sense of purpose and dedication. Their readiness to embrace any role required of them underscored their unwavering commitment to the organization's mission.
In times of leadership challenges, Monty and Elaine swiftly answered the call to assume the roles of Treasurer and Secretary, respectively, embarking on a transformative journey of service. Their collective contributions paved the pathtonumeroussuccessesforFOGS.
Elaine's tenure as Secretary epitomized efficiency, empathy, and visionary leadership. Her meticulous attention to detail and organizational prowess set a standard admired byallwhoworkedalongsideher.
Together, Monty and Elaine played pivotal roles in orchestrating successful fundraisers, leveragingElaine'sexceptionalrelationshipswith sponsors and supporters in the USA and Jamaica. Her tenacity, integrity, and humility were the driving forces behind many of our triumphs.
The legacy of the Kongs’ involvement with Friends of Good Shepherd International remains a cornerstone of our organization's success. While their roles may evolve, their impact on FOGS’growthtrajectorywillendure.
As we bid farewell to Monty and Elaine in their official capacities, our collective prayer is that they continue to be vessels of God's love and compassion, perpetuating their legacy as true ambassadorsofservice.
Cheers to a journey illuminated by love, dedication, andtheenduringspiritofMontyand ElaineKong.
The longevity of any organization is to a great extent dependent on the succession plan implementedbyitsleaders. So,itiswithasense of humility that I hasten to commend the past leadership of Friends of Good Shepherd International Inc., (FOGS) for adequately preparing for the transition which has been takingplaceinitsleadershipsince2022.
Since 2022, FOGS has been under the leadership of Mr. Andrew Foreman, supported by Vice-President, Gina Tulloch and the dynamic duo of Monty and Elaine Kong as TreasurerandSecretaryrespectively.
Under the leadership of our esteemed President Emerita, Marie Buteau, the Miramar-based Charity has distinguished itself as one of the most credible and effective non-profit organizations in South Florida. Since 1996, the Charity has raised and distributed over US$1.6 million to groups in the United States and throughouttheCaribbean.
WithMarieButeauatthehelmforover25years, sheinspiredandledherteamwithaclear sense of purpose and unwavering support for thepoorandneedyamongus.Evenin challenging times, such as the Covid-19 epidemic, the FOGS team, despite having to curtailitsactivities, wasrelentlessinitseffortsto help. It was a great honor, to have served as Vice-President.
However, afterseveralyearsofcommittedand dedicated service, the Kongs in January of this year decided to pass the batons to two seasoned members – Celia Brady (Treasurer) and Denise Isaacs (Secretary). Both Celia and Denisehavedemonstratedleadershipqualities thatwillundoubtedlybenefittheorganization.
Irrespective of past achievements, the new leadership is fully aware that there is no place for complacency and has already implemented strategies aimed at propelling the group to new levels. At a working retreat held in January, a brain-storming session saw members recommitting themselves to the idealsandvisionofFOGS.
Already plans are under-way to increase membership in both general and honorary categories. A mission trip to Jamaica is slated for 2025; efforts are being made to attract more corporate sponsorships; and of course, our annual fundraisers such as our gala and familypicnicareexpectedtoberebranded.
Based on my observation, I am confident that the current leadership with its varied degrees of expertise will continue to build on the successes of the past and grow memberships. However, success can only be assured when each of us as supporters, advertisers, and friends, continuetoplayourpart.
It is my hope that more of you, our friends and familymembers, willbewillingtoplayamore active role by selecting to support FOGS by becoming active or honorary members as we seek to address the plight of the poor among us.
JacquesA.Davis FormerVicePresident FriendsofGoodShepherdInternational,Inc. DENISE ISAACSIn the heart of Montego Bay, Jamaica, hope found a new home last year as charities received a much-needed boost from the compassionate efforts of Friends of Good Shepherd International Inc. Reflecting on the source of these funds, I couldn't help but acknowledge the incredible success of our fundraisers throughout the year. A significant portion of our total contribution was raised during FOGS' annual fundraising gala, atestamenttothegenerosityandsupport ofourcommunity.
