WELCOME HOMESTEAD

A Chisholm Springs Community Experience created by neighbors for neighbors

My family and I have lived here for nine years now, and I've meant to start this magazine years ago, but never had the time. The meaning of time has certainly changed for many of us since the Pandemic shifted how people work and live all over the world, but especially in our community.

Many families in our neighborhood scrambled to figure out homeschooling schedules, create makeshift home offices, and deal with one or both family members being classified as essential.

The Asher household was certainly shaken up when I chose to leave to teaching, and we went from two incomes to one. During this time, I've discovered what is truly important to us and able to better tend to the needs of our family.

I've taken on the task to create 'Homestead' to provide coverage from the HOA Board, to learn more about our neighbors other than through social media, and to take ownership and pride in our community. While we all besmirch the latest neighborhood internet glitch, talk smack about the trash pickup schedule or get all gassy about the potholes; we know that the moment when 'Farmer Glenn' (Albritton) lets the cows out to pasture and we pull through our community gates, there's something calming about seeing the calves play or watch the sun as it sets behind the old tractor on the hill; and we breathe for a moment because we are home.

'Homestead' is magazine is about our homes and the people who live here.

Let's take the time to celebrate our families, spend time with our neighbors, and share those moments here.

EVENT LIST Your holidays can still include special events despite the bah humbug of 2020. Whether you're having family coming to town or this year will be a holiday staycation, there are plenty of events around town that are taking COVID-19 protocols seriously.

While the Rodeo is back in town, be prepared to buy tickets and reserve your seating in advance. Seating is limited to 75% capacity, and masks are a must.

The Christmas Tree lighting in Sundance Square is canceled this year, but I did find holiday events still happening in Grapevine. The city is considered "The Christmas Capital of Texas." The City of Grapevine boasts over 1,400 events in 40 days. However, at the publication of this magazine, many of these events were sold out. Be sure to check websites for updates.

Finally, the last event I found, The Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway is perfect for kids of all ages; even better, the whole family can wear their PJs and stay warm and comfy in their vehicle. There will be food trucks on Fridays and Saturdays, and if you decided to hop out of the car to get the family food, be sure to have your masks handy.

As the year comes to an end, let's look to begin the new year with more appreciation for the little things, find comfort in the resilience of our family, and be thankful for the essential workers who have made our lives easier and more manageable during the last nine months.

Congratulations Kirby Family!

The Kirby's on Chisholm Springs Court let their Halloween spirit shine with their haunted graveyard decor.

HOA board member Holly Goodell mentioned, "There is another chance for some fun and fierce competition in December. Have your yard finished no later than 12/13 for a week of voting. Can't wait to see all the lights and inflatables!"

Sheri Kirby shared her thanks and appreciation on the Chisholm Springs group's Facebook page, "Thank you so much! My husband and I love living in Chisholm Springs. We’ve been blessed with amazing neighbors and a sense of community."

There is something special about our community. The residents of Chisholm Springs never disappoint when it comes to Halloween. There were hot dogs, glow sticks, adult beverages, bounce houses, and candy galore.

Many parents commented throughout the evening that they appreciated homeowners passing out candy from their driveways. “It makes it so much easier for families with strollers and little kids who still need mom and dad’s help,” said a neighbor.

Additionally, the emphasis was on keeping socially distant, but still allowing the children to enjoy the evening. Families stayed together and people were respectful going around each other.

The evening seemed to wind down a little after 7:30 p.m., with a few teenagers who ended up getting the best treat of the night as neighbor, Bryson Bagshaw emptied the candy buckets into their bags. “That kid just scored, big time,” he said, “But, at least we’re not stuck with all that candy!”

For now, the fog machines and Halloween decor will clear the way for Christmas lights, decorations, and holiday cheer.

The Kentucky Bluestem leans heavily under the cool, damp morning on the yards of the Chisholm Springs homes, and a distant train throws its whistle.

We know we are home, and there is a feeling of calmness as we enter through the gates as the cows chew the thick grass.

The land we live on has quite a history, and we are fortunate to have our own local historian and longtime resident, Glenn Albritton or Farmer Glenn as residents call him, sit a spell and tell me about Newark.

His parents Frances and Raz Albritton owned the Fina gas station and Jeters convenience store down the street from our homes. The convenience store is now re-open after 10 years, with Glenn as the owner and leasing the space. But, before we talk about the present, let’s go back to when Jeterville was the last spot to buy beer before the Oklahoma border, and the population was: 5 and 1 cat.

Cleaning Tips

Tip #1 When the shower door is so in your face Our water will quickly turn your shower door orange. Using a squeegee will help keep it clear.

If it’s already orange, use an all-purpose cleaner, like Mr. Clean to spray it before you get in the shower; then while you’re in the shower, give it a good scrub. Doing this while in the shower will make rinsing less of a mess.

Tip #2 Rub a dub dub, let's clean the tub Keep a dish sponge in your shower/tub. I recommend using the kind that you can add soap into the handle, makes it a one-stop shop! Using Dawn dish soap mixed with white vinegar will clear away the tub grime.

You can also clean the tub while the kids are in it.

After the kids take a bath have them drain the tub and wipe it down with the sponge to prevent dirt rings then quickly rinse. Be sure to give them a gold star for helping with chores!

Tip #3 BASEBOARDS SHOULDN'T BREAK YOUR BACK

- Erma Bombeck Use the brush attachment on the hose instead of wiping it with a cloth so that it doesn’t fall on the floor.

These can be done easily while you sweep or vacuum. If you’re using a broom, use the angled side to wipe the top of the baseboards or use the hose attachment on your vacuum to go across the baseboards fora quick clean.

Tip #4 DON'T FORGET TO LOOK UP Even if your ceiling fans are on all the time, they’re collecting dust. The vacuum is the easiest way to get rid of the dust and breathe easier.

He quickly advanced making his way to Executive Chef for Marriott. In 2012, he became the new owner and chef at the Vickery Cafe in Fort Worth.

In 2016, Chef James was ready to create a place that was not only locally owned but also supported local farmers. Everything at the Texan Diner is made by scratch.

"We make all our own jams, bread, and pies from scratch," said Chef James.

“ We support local ranchers and farmers to buy our meat and produce locally. Our food is never frozen.�
