A NEW YEAR GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN – a clean slate with 365 slots to fill in.

It’s a time to reflect on the past and to plan for the future. In between these two, however, is the “here and now” – the time where we go through our daily activities and routines. We strive to live out our dreams, desires, and passions in the everydayness of our lives. We want to make a difference. Often, we just don’t have the time, money, or energy to do great things. However, the good news is that we can all make a difference! We can contribute to big changes by doing small, random acts of kindness.

The week of February 15-20 is Random Acts of Kindness Week. It reminds us of the value of doing small and large acts of kindness every day. Smiles, opening doors for people, saying “please and thank you” are examples of small acts of kindness that can make a big difference.

By doing acts of kindness every day we will contribute to creating a safer, saner, and kinder world for everyone including pets.

In every issue we have a page of available pets entitled Save a Life, Adopt a Pet with the byline “Everyone can do something, large or small, to help save a life. A few of the ways are: adopt, foster, sponsor, volunteer, donate and educate. A small act of sharing it on your social media pages could help a pet get adopted and help a friend find their perfect pet.

Happy New Year!

Where has another one gone? My mother always said that as you get older, the years go faster – and she was absolutely right. Now that I’m retired and home more often, I notice little things I didn’t pay much attention to before. To kick off the year, I’m working on new cleaning routines. A friend always says, “It’s easier to keep it clean than get it clean.” Starting new habits is easier in bite-size pieces, so maybe one of these ideas will work for you.

Maya loves to play in her water bowl, and I keep a towel underneath her mat, switching it out when I do the wash.

I then wipe down the mat and the surrounding area; it takes maybe two minutes.

Cleaning the floors is not my favorite task, and along with my pups, I have a Moluccan Cockatoo who loves to make a daily mess. I don’t know how her bananas end up across the room! I finally got into the habit of cleaning her floor twice a day – a quick sweep while my coffee is brewing and then again before dinner.

What a difference it makes, and I don’t guilt myself for not doing a full clean.

How do you tackle their toys? All my girls love toys, but by the end of the day, they’re everywhere. I wish I could say I’ve trained mine to pick them up, but I haven’t. When I had Maddy, she loved to take her toys outside. It was adorable watching her grab a toy, run around shaking it, and then head for the door. By nightfall, there could be ten outside. Each evening we did what we called a “baby round-up” and put them back in her basket for the next day’s fun.

Let’s be honest – how much dog hair do you pick up daily?

One routine that helps me is brushing them outside. I’m big on using triggers to remind me of tasks. I drink my coffee outside, so I keep a basket with their brushes on the patio table. A quick brush before my first sip of coffee gets it done. For the puppy bunnies hiding in the house, I keep a Swiffer handy for

quick clean-ups. I also set up a cleaning station on the counter with essentials. If things are visible, I’m more likely to do a quick tidy.

My girlfriend had a bulldog, Agatha – cutest thing, but goodness, she always left a slobber trail. To avoid washing floors daily, she kept paper towels and wipes under each sink.

My Miss Matilda loved to run and stand in the rain, which was lovely because she was a Sheltie. Now her sister Maggie, a Border Collie, has taken up the routine. She loves doing zoomies and barking – my private Singing in the Rain concert.

Since it doesn’t rain often, I let her have fun; life is short.

I keep a towel by the back door to dry her off, especially her feet. You can’t miss those puppy paw prints on a wood floor!

Along with cleaning supplies in the kitchen, I keep extras under each bathroom sink and added pet cleaning supplies to the caddy. If there’s a mess, I can clean it up quickly with everything together. If you have a two-story home, consider doing the same so you’re not running downstairs for supplies.

I know everyone has different schedules and time constraints. To get started, think of one thing that bothers you most about having pets. What mini habit could you start that takes less than five minutes? What trigger could remind you?

I like adding tasks to routines I already do. Somehow, I got the chore of taking out the garbage. When I empty the bathroom trash, I clean the bathrooms. Some weeks I want to put it off, but they don’t clean themselves – and it doesn’t take long.

I hope these ideas help you adopt a new habit or routine for a less stressful, smoother-running home in the new year.

As with any pet, there are a few Cockatiel behaviors that some people find troublesome. Cockatiels can be very loud, particularly if they’re not getting enough attention. The may whistle, screech, or bang on their cage if they are unhappy or feel neglected. Additionally, Cockatiels (like most birds) are somewhat messy to clean up after. They tend to shed small feathers and toss their food around when they eat. Sweeping up around their cage will need to become part of your daily cleanup routine.

Life with Ashley, Chris, Pizza and Alice

Local performers, Ashley and Chris Reeve, recently shared with us how they balance making pet parenting a top priority with a busy schedule – and the joy their pets bring to their lives.

First, will you briefly share what you’re currently doing professionally.

support sister for Pizza. My mom ended up passing in February of 2025. Alice was born 2 days later. I feel like she brought her to us. My mom would have LOVED her (we named her Alice, in my mom’s honor, as she was obsessed with Alice in Wonderland).

ASHLEY: Thanks for having us! I primarily perform as a local bass-player, here in Vegas, with our own band called 80’s Night. Pre-pandemic, quite often I was touring internationally, playing bass for Cher.

Pizza is like this wise old man, with eyes that peer deep into your soul. He senses when we’re upset and checks in on us, giving lots of kisses. He also hoards sweet potatoes and thinks he’s a guard dog.

CHRIS: For the last few years, I’ve been touring pretty heavily on drums with Avril Lavigne. Lately, there hasn’t been much overlap with our travels. Pre-pandemic, our schedules would sometimes have us together only a few days, every couple of months!

Alice is a baby Ewok who craves constant attention. She’s the ultimate velcro-pup and loves to wrestle with Pizza. It’s like WrestleMania 24/7 at our house. Alice is also the self-designated Sneeze Patrol, always coming to check on us whenever we sneeze. She makes hilarious gremlin sounds, as well.

Tell us a little about Pizza and Alice: ASHLEY: We got Pizza as an emotional support animal for myself, while Chris was away on the road and my mom was inand-out of hospitals, battling cancer. Pizza was such a well-behaved puppy that he was permitted to visit multiple hospitals.

He’s always been so great at bringing joy to others, especially my mom. On some of her toughest days, he still managed to make her smile. We got Alice as an emotional 12

Do you have any tips for balancing busy schedules and pet parenting?

ASHLEY: Well, it’s like having children- it takes a village! We have a wonderful circle of supportive friends who are like family to us and our pups. Typically, one of us is home while the other is on tour; but if we’re both on the same gig- they stay with close family friends. Otherwise, they’re along for the adventure and have become great road-dogs.

When they smell perfume, they know it’s a gig night, and put themselves to bed in “the Pizza Hut” and “the Alice Palace”, (their crates). We leave the Jamie Oliver channel on. They just sleep and we keep a camera on them so we can check in on them.

Is a diet dolloped with

Pup Cups safe for your dog?

If you’ve never heard of a Pup Cup, likely, you don’t have a dog.

These little treats are all the rage in canine circles and on social media, where adorable dog noses dolloped with whipped cream seem to earn all the likes (and licks).

Originally known as Puppacinos, as coined by Pet Rescue Advocate Rocky Kanaka in 2008 (in a viral video, he ordered 100 Puppuccinos from a Starbucks drive-thru for 100 homeless dogs), Pup Cups are essentially a cup of whipped cream for your pup.

But are these free drive-thru treats actually safe for dogs? The answer is a qualified maybe, on occasion, according to Susie Costa, DVM. “I wouldn’t give pets Pup Cups on a regular basis as they have a high fat and dairy content,” explains Costa, the veterinarian at Las Vegas animal nonprofit, Hearts Alive Village Animal Clinic.

“They are fattening, can trigger pancreatitis and since pets are largely lactose intolerant … gastroenteritis.”

In other words, to the delight of social media users and your salivating furry best friend, you don’t have to cut these beloved treats out completely. Just remember, they contain very little by way of actual nutrients, including no fiber or health benefits.

Costa believes no drive-thru treats are ideal for pets and suggests a Cheerio or a single piece of Rice-Chex cereal as a healthier alternative, as long as your pet doesn’t have allergies.

“I am not a fan of store-bought treats of any kind,” says Costa.

“I don’t ever recommend a specific treat to owners for training.

I like voice commands and praise.”

She goes on to explain that even all-protein treats can trigger certain skin or food allergies, lead to obesity, and make the kidneys work harder.

“If you are adamant about treats, try making your own with ingredients such as bananas, oats, regular apple sauce, regular peanut butter or pumpkin, to name a few,” she says. “Using a high-quality canned dog food to make treats is also acceptable.

Roll it into little balls or slice it and bake it.”

If you still want to give your dog a Pup Cup for their birthday or as a reward after a particularly daunting visit to the vet, go ahead. Just don’t make it a habit, and never use it as a replacement for high-quality dog food.

On the other paw, another treat offered at some drive-thrus, soft-serve ice cream, is a complete no-no.

“No one should eat this ever, especially your pets,” says Costa, noting that soft-serve ice cream contains milk fat, sugar, corn syrup, stabilizers and emulsifiers. “Treats with ingredients that you can’t identify are also not appropriate for pets.”

February’s “Spay/Neuter Awareness Month” by spreading the word about the importance of spaying and neutering. With so many unwanted animals ending up in shelters or homeless, it is important that pet owners do what they can to help control the homeless animal overpopulation.

Even if you do not normally let your pets outside unattended, accidents DO happen. One unfortunate escape of an unspayed/unneutered pet can result in an entire litter of unwanted kittens or puppies. The spaying and neutering of our pets not only helps reduce the number of abandoned animals, but also provides our own pets with a variety of medical benefits. Spaying our female pets helps prevent uterine infections and cancers. Neutering males significantly lowers the risk of prostate problems and eliminates the chances of testicular cancer all together. Spayed and neutered pets typically live healthier, longer, and happier lives.

Behaviorally, both male and female pets benefit from spaying and neutering by reducing a number of undesirable behaviors. Excessive aggression and territory marking (urinating/spraying) are significantly reduced when pets are spayed or neutered. Spayed females will no longer go through their heat cycle, which will cease the discharge of menstrual fluids and the clean-up associated with it.

This February, help spread the word about the MANY benefits of spaying and neutering. If we all do our part, we can greatly reduce the number of homeless pets in our community and ensure healthier lives for our own pets.

If you’ve got children, you’ll need to check with the rescue about age requirements; however, volunteering is a wonderful way to teach kids responsibility and empathy and to encourage community involvement.

Between animal care, veterinary costs, and any staff or facility costs, rescues are stretched THIN. Often, your donation can be the difference between an animal being pulled from the shelter and given the medical care it needs, or not.

Wintertime Weight Gain and Pet Nutrition During the winter months, we ALL tend to put on a little weight. People and pets typically put on a few pounds as the days get shorter and the temperatures dip. We tend to blame our extra pounds on those glorious holiday meals and too much pie. But what about our pet’s weight gain? Why are they looking so plump?

The easiest answer to this question is “survival”. Before our dogs and cats became domesticated, they needed to prepare for winter by fattening up. They needed the extra calories to create fat for warmth and as a food reserve when game was scarce. Now, with most of our pets living indoors, they no longer need those extra calories. Unfortunately, our pets are unaware of this fact. They still have an innate increase in appetite as winter approaches and may need a little assistance in keeping their weight in check.

Like people, successfully reducing your pet’s weight requires less calories and more exercise. Since all pets require a different number of calories, sometimes determining the correct caloric intake can be difficult.

Reviewing the serving suggestions on your pet’s food bag is a great place to start. If you reduce the amount of food you are feeding, you will need to ensure that your pet’s minimum protein needs are still being met. A recommendation from your veterinarian is often helpful if you are unsure. Treats should also be carefully rationed, amounting to no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.

Grieving a Pet

It seems like only yesterday, I was writing an article about palliative care with pets. Unfortunately, as every pet owner knows (or will know), there comes a time in our pets’ lives, where they need to say goodbye.

J

ust recently, I had to make that difficult decision. If you’ve had to make this decision before, it is unlike any other.

Sure, you can google all types of phrases to try to find the answers you are seeking. However, I’m a firm believer that our pets will let us know when they are ready to make their journey to the rainbow bridge.

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll notice that your pet doesn’t seem like themselves. My veterinarian mentioned thinking of three things that my dog loves and to ask myself if my dog was doing all (or none) of those things.

If not, it might be time to start thinking about what comes next.

My dog, Toby, lived for playing. He loved his toys. He loved being crazy. He thrived on chaos. The last week of his life, he still grabbed a ball, only to drop it and lay down. He was very tired, and unlike my normal boy. He had a brain tumor and had fought a good fight, but in the end, the brain tumor won.

One thing your vet may ask you is if you want to be present.

This is very difficult for some people, but I always choose to be not only in the room, but basically hugging and kissing my dog and telling him repetitively what a good boy he is. If there’s any truth that the hearing is the last to go, I want my dog to know how much he (or she) is loved. Our pets give us the world in their tiny paws and they deserve to know how special they were to us.

at all. Some may not eat, sleep more or seem outwardly depressed. It’s up to us to try to read their cues and do what we can to cheer them up. For some, it might be new toys.

Others might enjoy car rides/hikes/swimming/meeting new people. You know your pet best and can try different options.

One more thing to mention. When your pet is finally at rest, you have the option to bring home their remains. Usually this includes a snippet of fur and a paw print.

I find that it is something I absolutely need... to have them home with me. Even though they are no longer here in body, having their presence in my home comforts me, just a little.

To me, it’s not just a box of ashes. It’s a collection of memories, joys, laughs, frustrations and yes, even heartache. It’s a symbol of hope that we will see them again. It’s a gentle reminder of the love we had for them and them for us. It’s a promise that we will continue to love them and remember them forever. It’s knowing that while their physical story has ended, their spirit remains protected in our care forever.

And once the initial pain subsides, it’s a soft echo of the past urging us that it’s okay to love again in the future.

And, their passing is normally very peaceful and humane.

If you have another pet at home, they may be grieving with you. Some don’t show signs until a few days later, when they realize this change is permanent. Some might not show signs

The majority of pet households in the United States have either a cat or a dog and many have more than one or have both cats and dogs. Approximately 56% of households have dogs and 45% have cats. However, there are 38% of households who have other pets such as small mammals (hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, gerbils, ferrets, hedgehogs, and more) fish, birds, reptiles, exotics, and pot-bellied pigs, etc. Sometimes these pets are called “nontraditional” or “alternative” pets. There are many reasons for choosing a non-traditional pet – for some it is a preference. Not everyone is a cat person or a dog person. For others it is a decision based on lifestyle, housing and rental restrictions, space limitations or financial concerns.

CHOICES

There are so many different types of pets that could be the right pet for your household. The best choice is the one that fits best with your personality, lifestyle, housing arrangement, and finances. Spend some time thinking about why you want to bring a pet into your home and life. Think about your schedule- do you have enough time for their daily routine care and their social needs?

Many times people choose a small mammal for a variety of reasons – they’re smaller and don’t require as much space, they’re less expensive initially, they don’t need to be walked, etc. It is important to learn about their habitat needs and space requirements.

What about their habits - when are they most active? Do they like to cuddle or be held?

Comparing three of the more common small mammals you can see how each one could appeal to a different potential pet parent:

Hamsters are solitary and must live alone.

They don’t mind being held but typically won’t sit and cuddle. They are very busy and always on the go. Children especially love to watch

them play in their habitat. They are nocturnal – they sleep during the day and are awake at night.

Rats are very curious, intelligent animals - they are easily tamed and relatively easy to care for, however, they do require a fair amount of attention and exercise outside their cages – ideally at least an hour a day. Rats are social and do best with a same sex buddy.

Guinea Pigs are gentle and have sweet dispositions. They are social and usually don’t mind being held and cuddled. They prefer to live in groups so it is best to consider adopting two females. They need exercise and a safe place to explore and hide. Their larger size and big appetite for lots of hay and vegetables requires more frequent cage cleaning.

Small mammals are often called “starter pets” because they are usually easier for a first time pet parent and children. Though they are smaller they still require care and attention.

Feeding and playing with a pet is fun; cleaning cages and other not-so-much fun chores are aspects of pet care that a child must do also.

It is unrealistic, however, to expect a young child to be completely responsible for any pet.

Discuss how you will handle pet care before you get one.

When we invite a pet into our lives we become responsible for its care and nurture. All pets deserve more than food and a clean habitat; their needs for environmental enrichment and social relationships must be met also.

A PERFECT TIME TO START OR REFRESH YOUR PET’S DENTAL CARE ROUTINE.

R

egular oral care for pets is extremely important. It’s estimated that 80% of dogs and cats over three years old have dental disease. Initially, it starts as plaque and tartar buildup and without dental care it leads to tooth decay, gingivitis, tooth loss and periodontal disease. Also, there is increasing awareness that if left untreated, poor oral health can cause serious health issues affecting the heart, kidneys, liver and other vital organs.

We love our pets and are aware that dental care is important yet it’s one aspect of pet care that is often neglected. It’s difficult. It’s probably one of the least favorite activities to do for our pets. It probably doesn’t rank high on your pet’s list of favorite activities either. Most pets are reluctant to have their teeth brushed. Creating an at-home dental care plan can also be overwhelming. The pet oral care market has grown considerably in the last few years with the development of many innovative dental care products. Many of the new products were showcased at SuperZoo 2025.

Briefly, here are a few products that were helpful for me in developing a routine dental care plan for my dog: The “Gold Star” dental routine is daily toothbrushing or at minimum, 3 times a week.

My furball is more than resistant – she hates having her teeth brushed. However, I started using finger wipes to get her accustomed to having my finger in her mouth. I then transitioned to using a finger toothbrush and toothpaste, and slowly I’m introducing her to a regular dog toothbrush. We are not quite at the “Gold Star” level.

Studies indicate that toothbrushing with an enzymatic toothpaste is the most effective way to prevent dental disease because it combines the “mechanical” removal of plaque and 38

enzymes which target and break down bad bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath. An alternative for dogs who resist having their teeth brushed is using a brushless toothpaste gel.

Dental chews are still a favorite for reducing plaque and tartar buildup and help supplement brushing. They provide the “mechanical” or chewing function that helps scrape off plaque, massages gums and freshens breath.

There are unlimited products and options offering a variety of chewing styles and sizes for most dogs.

One area where new product development is in the oral health support line. These are products that combine ingredients that chemically support oral health such as water additives, oral rinses and sprays that reduce bacteria in the mouth. Based on my research these are often overlooked.

Summarizing

The most effective method to good dental health is still brushing their teeth as often as possible. Supplementing brushing with dental chews and using an oral health support product is recommended. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Start where your dog is comfortable and least resistant. Be gentle yet persistent.

Remember, there are many great products available that help make dental care easier and more effective. Our pets are worth the effort.

PARABLE OF FIVE KITTIES Once upon a time there were five kitties born from the same litter who did everything together.

One day they decided to each get a pet. The first kitty chose a dragonfly but played by swatting too hard so the dragonfly flew away. The second kitty wanted a goldfish, but each time the cat stirred the fishbowl water with his claws, the fish hid at the bottom of the bowl. The third kitty found a lizard and enjoyed reaching for its tail which eventually fell off as the lizard ran away. The fourth kitty wanted a baby chicken. After the chick grew, it chased all the cats around the barnyard just as it had been chased when it was little.

The fifth kitty chose a puppy. At first the pup was smaller than the kitty who played gently and made sure the puppy was fed, had clean water, and was snuggled to keep warm. The puppy grew to three times the size of the cat, but the cat had nothing to fear since they were the best of friends.

NATIONAL CAT HEALTH MONTH

It’s a great time to celebrate our cats and let them know how much we love and appreciate them. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to ask ourselves if we are meeting all of their needs. Cats are unique and often we misunderstand them and fail to create an environment that meets their needs. We provide for their basic needs but are we providing for enrichment and play. Enrichment means improving or enhancing the living environment of our pets for greater health, longevity and quality of life.

O

ne way to enrich their lives is to safely explore the outside together. Screened-in porches or cat enclosures are popular. A less expensive option is a pet tent. It is easily set up and provides some contact with the outdoors. Ideal for letting your cat be with you when you’re outside. My ultimate favorite is a pet stroller. Some cats can be trained to walk with a harness and a leash adding exercise along with the joy of being outside.

Another way to enhance their lives is by providing opportunities for play and predatory behavior. Cats are natural hunters and in the great outdoors without human caretakers would spend a great deal of their time hunting for food. For cats, play is more than just having fun. It helps them satisfy their basic predatory instincts. Kittens are naturally playful yet engaging adult cats in meaningful play can be challenging. Play that mimics predatory behaviors exercises the mind and body helping to reduce boredom and obesity.

Play with your food!

Parenting a pet is often compared with parenting children. There is one importance difference though. We usually tell children to “stop playing with your food” whereas with our furry feline children it’s a good idea to encourage them to play with their food. There is a category called foraging toys which includes food puzzles and treat dispensers which help satisfy a cat’s natural instinct to search for food. Last year I switched my cat to a mostly wet food diet supplemented with some dry food. I use a maze or tower

type dispenser and also a few smaller ones designed to dispense treats or dry food when played with. It encourages slower eating and simulates hunting for his food.

I also use a DIY feeding game using little mice and other small prey and small plastic containers.

I put two or three treats or dry food in the container and top it with a mouse or feathered prey.

I hide these in a variety of places throughout the house for him to hunt and catch.

It’s also very important to include interactive playtimes with your cat in your daily schedule. Short regular play sessions are best.

Interactive toys such as wand-type toys with feathers whizzing through the air or mice moving erratically on the floor resemble the prey cats innately hunt are great toys for these play sessions.

Battery or remote controlled toys simulate the movement of small animals. These play sessions provide positive times to bond with your furry feline.

Enjoy and have fun with your furry feline. Remember cats crave attention and love from their humans. Celebrate this month with additional healthy doses of cuddling, snuggling and togetherness.
