Acomb Family Triathlon At Energise: Saturday 29 July from 9.00am - 12.00 noon.

This is a family event and not to be taken too seriously! The ethos is about trying something new and healthy while having some fun as a family, therefore, the event will not be timed so allowing you plenty of time to change and prepare between disciplines. All participants will receive a medal.

In addition, there will be an activity village with various events including a climbing wall and inflatables for the whole family and supporters to enjoy after participating in the triathlon.

The entry cost is £10 per family (minimum of 1 adult and 1 child).

CAREGiver of the Year 2017 Julie Gascoyne is our nomination for the national Home Instead CAREGiver of the Year Award 2017.

Julie embodies the Home Instead definition of a CAREGiver. She gets on quietly delivering the highest level of support to the people she cares for with a smile and an assurance that makes them feel happy and confident when she’s around. Get Cycling are a not-forprofit community interest company promoting cycling in all its varieties: for leisure, transport, health, happiness and the environment. They do this through events, programmes, publications, consultancy work, training services, community bike shop and inclusive cycles. They provide lots

of advice on more unusual bikes such as adult tricycles, multi seat bikes, handcycles and wheelchair tandems.

Personalised playlists can improve people’s wellbeing

C Research showed people with dementia who listened to music tailored to their tastes and memories, had less anxiety.

Playlist for Life is a charity who want every person with dementia, whether living at home or in a care home, to have a playlist of personally meaningful music from key moments in their life, available on an iPod, tablet or phone. The charity believes personalized music playlists can also reduce pain. Music is neurologically special because it stimulates so many parts of the brain at once.

Even if dementia has damaged one part of the brain it can still reach those other parts almost as if it gets ‘in through the back door’ to access memories and abilities that had been thought lost.

The food you love but healthier!

A major new campaign has been launched

by Diabetes UK which aims to get people thinking healthily and creatively in the kitchen. The campaign, called The Food You Love, shines the spotlight on five people who have not let living with diabetes become a barrier to their love of cooking or to enjoying delicious meals.

Over the course of the campaign, they will share their healthy versions of some of the nation’s favourite recipes like fish and chips and apple strudel. Alongside these recipes and video tutorials, people who sign up will also receive healthy eating tips, meal planners and more, to help you enjoy the food you love, only healthier.

Andy’s Advice Food hygiene and safety can be a real concern when caring for your clients.

Be sure to check dates and storage instructions on foods. Have a conversation with your client and support them in identifying spoiled foods. Help them clean out cupboards and fridge freezers as part of your duties and tasks.

Don’t use your Mobile whilst driving!

The penalty for using your mobile behind the wheel is now a £200 fixed penalty notice and 6 points on your licence. Even if you have a hands-free device, if the police think you are not in control of the vehicle or are distracted you can be at risk of being stopped and penalised.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid using your phone behind the wheel: • Before you start driving set your phone to silent or off and put it in a place you can’t reach.

• If you need to use your phone pull over when safe to do so and turn your car engine off before using your phone.

• Do not even text or phone anyone whilst you are sitting waiting for traffic lights to change as this is still considered against the law.

• Do not call someone when you know they are driving, and ask them to call you back when it is safe to do so if you realise they are.

Here at Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale we are working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society to help change people’s perceptions of Dementia. The aim is to transform the way we think, act and talk about Dementia.

A lack of understanding around Dementia can cause loneliness and social exclusion amongst those affected. The Dementia Friends programme hopes to tackle this issue by creating more communities and businesses that are Dementia Friendly and more inclusive of people affected by it.

‘Dementia Friends Champions’ and at Home Instead we have our very own, in our Recruiter Karen. Over the past few months she has been going out and about into the community to deliver the information sessions.

As of 13th June, Karen had created 100 Dementia Friends, and here’s 5 more to add to that list! Last month, she ran one of her Dementia Friends information sessions in the office, as part of our new CAREGiver meeting.

The Dementia Friends Karen has made will now be able to put their learning into action, which could help someone living with Dementia in their community. Their actions could be as big or as small as they choose – but every action counts.

Thursday 15th June was National Cupcake Day! In the week leading up to National Cupcake Day, we asked our CAREGivers to bake with their clients. For every picture we received of their creations, we donated £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia is the number one cause of death in England and Wales. It doesn’t discriminate and currently there’s no cure. It is the Alzheimer’s Society’s aim to change this.

Last year, dedicated Cupcakers around the country united to raise a mighty £330,000 against dementia. That’s more than enough to

fund 11 PhD researchers for a year, giving them the opportunity to undertake vital, potentially lifesaving work.

This year the Alzheimer’s Society wanted to raise even more. By taking part in National Cupcake Day, you’ll not only have helped to create a better world for people affected by dementia today, but also to find a cure for tomorrow.

As you can see, we had some impressive bakes, and they tasted as good as they looked! Thanks to all those who took part, the money is going to a great cause.

Cemetery Walks with a difference York Cemetery is a Grade II* listed landscape and is one of only two privately owned Victorian cemeteries in the UK. Founded in 1837, it now encompasses 24 acres and is administered by The York Cemetery Trust with support from the Friends of York Cemetery.
