At Home Instead, it’s our aim to be the care provider of choice in York, Scarborough & Ryedale. That’s for people working in care as well as for people receiving care. That’s why Luke and Ann Marie, owners of Home Instead York bought a holiday

home in Amble, Northumberland for staff to use and enjoy.

It’s been wonderful to see so many of our team making use of the holiday home for their ‘staycations’ over the course of the summer!

September is #WorldAlzheimersMonth The aim of the month is to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Here at Home Instead, we’re experts in providing dementia care at home, helping people live well at home in the place they know and love.

Stay Nourished

- Top Tips to Eat Well and Age Well Food and nutrition play an important role in staying well. But many people lose their interest in food as they get older and, according to Home Instead research, one in five over 75s struggle to cook their own food.

As part of our campaign called ‘Stay Nourished,’ our aim is to raise

awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits.

Home Instead Scarborough & Ryedale is here to share its knowledge and help recognise the signs of malnutrition so that families or those providing care and support can take action.

Community Café Home Instead Scarborough & Ryedale are delighted to have teamed up with St James Community Arts Centre to host a monthly Community Café for the local people of Scarborough.

The Community Café is held on the 4th Monday of each month.

There is no cost involved.

Refreshments are kindly donated by St James with Holy Trinity Church.

The café is open to all ages, so come on your own or feel free to bring a family member, neighbour or friend along.

Come and enjoy some time socialising and doing fun activities with friendly, likeminded people.

Here are some top tips for encouraging your loved one to enjoy mealtimes: Keep mealtimes interesting.

Aromas can help to stimulate the appetite. Encourage your loved one to get involved in the selection, preparation and serving of meals wherever possible.

Top Tip: Help your loved one to make a shopping list and decide on a healthy meal plan for the week.

Make the dining area comfortable, remove distractions and create a nice atmosphere.

Think about portion sizes; If appetite is a problem, it is better to introduce smaller portions more often instead of a large plate of food 3 times a day. Offering finger foods is also a good way to encourage people to eat if someone doesn’t want a traditional meal.

Ensure healthy snack options are available and make sure food and drinks are easily accessible throughout the day.

Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unless your loved one has specifically been advised to eat them by their GP. Always prioritise mealtimes and try to create a mealtime routine. Avoid rushing and coercing someone to eat.

Gentle persuasion is better.

Confront the myth that weight loss is a normal process with ageing as our bodies become less active.

National Playlist Day – September 22nd September 22nd is National Playlist Day. A day created by Music and Dementia Charity, ‘Playlist for Life’ to raise awareness of the power of personally meaningful music for dementia.

Who are Playlist For Life?

Playlist for Life is a music and dementia charity founded in 2013 by writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson after the death of her mother, Mamie, who had dementia. Their vision is simple: they want everyone with dementia to have a unique, personalised playlist and everyone who loves or cares for them to know how to use it.

The benefits of a personalised playlist Over two decades of scientific research has shown that listening to a personalised playlist can improve the lives of those living with dementia.

In fact, listening to music that is personally meaningful has many psychological benefits, meaning anyone can benefit from a playlist.

Personalised playlists can: ■ reduce anxiety ■ improve your mood ■ make difficult tasks more manageable ■ evoke memories that can help families and carers connect.

Playlist for Life harnesses the powerful effects of personal music

to help anyone who is affected by dementia, their families and carers.

Whether it’s the music from a first dance, lullabies from childhood or a theme tune from a favourite TV show, music has the ability to take us back in time and remind us of our past, giving you that flashback feeling. Sharing your songs and memories can help people living with dementia connect with family, friends and carers.

Priority Services Register and locking cooker valve During a recent Care Pro Meeting we had Kate Urwin, the Yorkshire Energy Doctor along with us for an informative session on fuel poverty and all things energy safety.

Kate informed us of a couple of important pieces of information, which we thought we would share with you, so you can be having a look into whether they would work well for you, or your loved one.

The first was the Priority Services Register, which all our clients are eligible to sign up for, for free.

The register is used when in an emergency such as, a storm or flood, which causes power or gas to go off. Everyone on the Priority Services Register, is prioritised to get power back up and running as soon as possible. Kate also let us know about a really useful safety device, which we’ve never come across before! The Locking Cooker Valve.

This simple safety device is fitted to existing gas cooker pipework and allows a Care Pro or relative to control gas supply using a key.

When the valve is locked, the gas supply to the cooker is stopped eliminating the risk of the cooker being unintentionally turned on or left on, giving peace of mind that the cooker can’t be used, when a Care Pro or relative leave the house or room.
