What type of care should older people receive?

Home Instead CAREGivers Gail, Jess and Gill were asked what kind of care older people should receive. A fond farewell to Roisheen Roisheen our Community Development Officer will unfortunately be leaving us next month to take retirement. After three great years at Home Instead, here’s what she had to say; Well… what can I say except goodbye, so long auf wiedersehen pet!

For those of you who will remember ‘Boys from the Black Stuff’ and the character Yosser – ‘Gizza job’ is no longer required!

Although the free bus pass and state pension remain a few years off I have decided to retire. I am very much looking forward to spending some ‘me time’ with my husband Dave. Plus regular trips to Manchester and Ireland to catch up with my two daughters in between tending our allotment plot!

Many thanks to everyone at Home Instead York. I wish you all the very best and continued success for the excellent service provided by all the team and CAREGivers of Home Instead York.

The York Learning 4 Everyone Spring/Summer 2017 Brochure is now out and is full of activities and learning opportunities for everyone. There’s lots of traditional courses as well as a few new ideas including Grow and Eat your Garden Flowers, Introduction to English Folklore, a huge variety of Crafts, Creative Script Writing and Metafit intensity training. A day in the life of… Jack

On a normal day…

I tend to get up around 7.15am. I then have the most important meal of the day – breakfast! If I didn’t, I don’t think I would make it past 9am at work…

Normally, the first thing I do when I get to the office is make a strong black coffee to wake me up, then I check through my emails and calendar to see what lies ahead for that day. In my role as Finance & HR Administrator, no one day is the same as the last. The start of each month tends to be my busiest period, with processing invoices to send out to clients on the 1st, then making sure all the payroll is ready to be sent off in time for payday! As well as the financial tasks I have, I spend a lot of my time updating social media and website pages to keep people in the know of what’s going on in ‘planet Home Instead’.

Outside of work I am really into music, I enjoy going to gigs and festivals, and love finding and listening to new bands which I can tell people about! One of my main passions is playing the drums, I first started playing when I was 12, and have been in bands in the past. I have recently started teaching the drums as well which is something I find very enjoyable.

I enjoy keeping fit, and tend to go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week, I do try to eat healthily however this never goes to plan as I go out most weekends and I’m partial to the odd beer or two…

I’m a massive Liverpool fan, which comes from my Dad who had me in a Liverpool kit when I was about 3 days old.

Because of this, a lot of my conversations at work relate to football, much to the annoyance of the ladies in the office, but to myself and Andy’s delight! I currently still live at home with my Mum and sister, and we have a Miniature Schnauzer named Milo who pays absolutely no attention to anything I say!

A message from Emma…

As I’m sure some of you are aware, I started at the HISC office at the end of October. I have spent the last month or so finding my feet and my way around the office. Now I seem to be getting sorted I thought I’d best say hello to you all and let you know a little bit about what I will be doing.

As well as filing… A LOT… I will be dealing with all the compliance side of both Client and CAREGiver files relating to inspections from CQC, CYC and HISC. THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP!!

With increasing guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures it is really important that we all work closely together to get on top of paperwork! Both Zoë and myself will be working alongside each other on client paperwork, e.g. MAR charts and Client Logs and Andy and myself with regards to CAREGiver files e.g.

Shadow forms, Introduction forms and Observation forms etc.

It is really important that all paperwork is filled in correctly and returned to the office ASAP. I therefore may be contacting some of you with regards to some missing paperwork which I am looking for at the office to enable me to “tick the box”.

I am looking forward to working alongside you all and look forward to meeting you all very soon!

Dehydration in Dementia Dehydration is a big risk for people with dementia and can result in increased confusion, delirium, urinary tract infections, health problems and even hospitalisation. Dehydration occurs when people don’t drink enough fluids and this can happen to people with dementia for a number of reasons, including: · Inability to recognise drinks;

So if you are visiting someone with dementia make sure that you encourage them to drink small amounts of fluids, preferably water, milk or juice throughout the day and help them to drink if needed.
