The List, The List, The List Most mail-order pros will tell you the two most important items you need to create a successful mailing campaign are a great sales letter and a RESPONSIVE LIST. Beginners are frequently tempted to get the cheapest list they can find from either an order form they got by mail or an online list vendor. They are overlooking the fact that the most expensive part of any mailing is POSTAGE – 35 cents for a postcard, and now 55 cents for a first class letter. So the cost of leads is minor compared to that.

Today, let’s focus on lists. Here are a few facts about business opportunity (bizopp) leads. Major list brokers shy away from bizopp for a number of reasons. Some only want to support product sellers; others are leery of MLM, etc. There are maybe 3 million or so leads in the entire “universe” of current bizopp seekers. Vendors who are in this space try to expand it through various means: running ads, creating chain letter deals, trading names with other vendors, etc. The problem with those methods is, they tend to attract “low end” responders.

In other words, people who are “just above desperate” financially. So when you mail to them, there are definite price point limits. They may or may not have email or credit cards. Most tend to move frequently. As Dan Kennedy once famously said, “Don’t try to sell to broke people.” Any mailer must understand these basic facts about bizopp.

There are, in my opinion, a few good bizopp vendors out there (including Home Business Advertiser). In the beginning, you have little choice but 44

to go to them for leads. You should understand they all tend to trade names, so you’ll see some duplication across the vendor space. I recommend that you get your leads electronically if you’re going to do a lot of mailing. This allows you to compare and remove duplicate names when you rent a new list. Most vendors will allow you to rent names by email. Just remember most also specify “one time use” only.

Second, I recommend that you create a “nixie list.” If you are a downline builder like me, you set up all the postcards or mailing pieces with your return address on them. That allows you to capture all the nixies and put them into a spreadsheet. My own “nixie list” currently has about 3000 names on it, and it grows every time we do a mailing. When I rent a new list, I “scrub” it by comparing files and removing the known nixies. Typically, this results in removal of several hundred names from a 10,000+ file.

Third, I recommend that you create a “buyer list.” These are people who responded to your mailings and sent in MONEY, even if only a dollar or two. Anyone who joined your MLM under you should be added to this list. Having a buyer list allows you to mail to higher quality (and FREE) names when you’re launching something new. Once they’ve responded to you, you own the lead.

And the bigger your buyers list is, the more powerful you are as a mailer.

Hang on to them! My buyer list now includes many thousands of people who have responded to a postcard or flyer with a few dollars. Mailorder GOLD.

Finally, I recommend you “scrub” your lists with a service that checks addresses for postal deliverability. This is done by comparing addresses to the USPS CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) database. There are vendors online who will do this for a fee. I use SmartyStreets.com. You can also have a list scrubbed for the NCOA (National Change of Address) database, but that is more expensive and probably not worth the cost. In any case, you want to have certified 9-digit zip codes on all your labels. When a vendor sends you leads that have only 5-digit zips, it has probably NOT been CASS certified.

Creating your own in-house list is the way to go in the long haul. Follow these guidelines and start building yours.
