Flip through the pages of this issue and it becomes clear that modern vintage and retro styles are big news this Autumn. From opulent rich vintage colours in this season’s fabric collections to retro influences in furniture design and lighting — brilliantly updated with cutting-edge design and function. And it’s not only in the décor industry that this influence can been seen. The world of fashion also pays homage to the dramatic silhouettes of the Forties, Sixties and Seventies, which can be seen on the catwalks and in the models featured in “Fabulously Pink”. Continuing on the retro theme we also feature the new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle and Mini, both icons of the 1960s, and both in the showrooms this Autumn. As we move from the hot summer days to cooler temperatures it is also time to update your home with stylish seasonal looks. A few of the inspirational ideas to be found in this issue include adding contemporary and classy touches for your sleeping space, the latest technology and sustainability which is shaping the bathrooms of the future, and decorating with Asian hotel inspired furnishings. I hope you’ll also find plenty of other ideas in this issue to inspire you, from the latest designs in lighting and alfresco fireplaces to the soaring popularity of countertop islands. Way too much to mention it all here. So… start turning the pages and enjoy!

Does your Home have a Problem? Moisture problems are detrimental to our health and to the durability and resale value of your homes, and too much moisture in a home can lead to mold, mildew, and other biological growth. This in turn can lead to a variety of health effects ranging from more common allergic reactions, to asthma attacks, and hypersensitivity pneumonitits, for example. In addition to health problems, high relative humidity or water that enters building cavities can lead to problems such as rot, structural damage, and premature paint failure. Construction problems can include, managing water outside foundation walls, managing water inside the foundation walls and in the basement or crawl space floor and using construction techniques to control water, air movement, vapour diffusion, and condensation. On the Costa del Sol homes are usually built over dry ground resulting in most homes being built without moisture protection. VIP Homes offers a specialised service where all our installations have a 10 year guaranteed in writing, and in some cases up to 30 years GUARANTEE, both on the material as well as the installation, solving your humidity problems forever and in a very easy and cost effective way. Lady’s Day for Superyacht at Ocean Village Marina At first glance, 59 metre Calixe looked like ‘just’ another superyacht in the conveyor belt of beauties that continue to grace the waters of Gibraltar’s Ocean Village. However, when Calixe cruised in to the marina in June, she was known to be a bit different for she is in fact owned by a woman. And, in the world of male-dominated mega-million superyachts, that’s a real rarity. Calixe is the property of California newspaper publisher, Wendy McCaw. Her ex-husband, mobile mogul Craig McCaw, sold the remainder of his business McCaw Cellular to AT&T in 1994 for the tidy sum of 11.5 billion dollars — at the time the second largest merger in US history. Just a few years later, in 1997, the couple went through divorce and Wendy is said to have received 460 million dollars in the settlement – Calixe also became hers. Wendy now joins a microscopic clique of female superyacht owners headed up by Elena Ambrosiadou, one of the world’s most successful hedge fund managers, who bought the iconic 88 metre Maltese Falcon in 2009. However, un-

18

AUTUMN

like Elena who charters her yacht from around 350,000 Euros a week, Wendy only uses her yacht for personal trips, never for charter, and was seen departing Ocean Village not by sea, but on ship’s toy, the helicopter. Built by Feadship and launched in 1986, Calixe is certainly more traditional than cutting-edge in interior and exterior design but turns heads due to her immaculate presentation and unique green-white paint job. She accommodates 10 passengers and 13 crew members and has a sporty white-hulled speedboat and the green-white liveried chopper atop. Interestingly Wendy is widely known for donating millions of dollars in the 1990s to help return Keiko, the orca star of film Free Willy, to the wild. The daily rate for a Calixe-sized berth at Ocean Village is £4 per metre. A 20% discount is available for annual bookings when paid in advance in full. Occupiers of Premier Berths will also receive an ‘Ocean Village Privilege Card’ offering crews concessions in certain stores, eateries, the Health Club and more to reward them for their loyalty.

Alberto Almeida is the Director of Kelaty Spain and Portugal. Born in Rio Tinto, Porto, Portugal, Alberto’s first love for oriental rugs started in the 1970s when he was offered the position as Manager of an Art Gallery in Manaus Brazil. Here, surrounded by the most precious rugs, his love turn to a passion as he delved deeper into the roots and history of the traditional craft of rug making. After 30 years of research he still believes that he has only scratched the surface. “From the humble origins of rug making, through the Caucasus Mountains to the arid plains of Iran, handmade rugs have been coveted for centuries in Europe and America. Each tying of the knot culminates months of preparation work — a craft that has been passed down from generation to generation by tribal and master weavers. Today, such works of art have earned the respect of museums, have graced our floors and walls and no other art has given so much comfort to our homes.” KELATY is one of the oldest and most prestigious wholesale companies for handmade rugs in Europe. They offer the most extensive and diverse collection of luxury designer, natural, oriental and traditional rugs available. Don’t miss their Winter promotion, with discounts of up to 80% at El Corte Inglés Puerto Banús in September and Corte Inglés Malaga in October.

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR HOME MORE COSY AND COMFORTABLE USING SOFT FURNISHINGS AND ACCESSORIES • Swap your soft furnishings for more tactile fabrics, replace bands on cushions with velvets, make subtle changes and you will change the whole mood of the room. With your accessories if you can’t afford to buy new accessories perhaps have a reshuffle of items that you already have, display them in different rooms or simply rework your current displays. • Mixing lots of different fabrics together is on-trend this winter. Use lots of cushions in different textures on sofas; fur, wool, silk and felt are cosy and inviting. Don’t forget to add a big soft throw to complete the look. • Soften up a leather sofa with a chunky knitted throw and some luxurious velvet cushions. As the winter nights roll in think about changing the lighting in a room, add odd table lamps turn off harsh overhead lighting. • Add a couple of faux-fur cushions, light some cinnamon scented candles, and buy a dark coloured lampshade to scatter ambient lighting about. Fill baskets and vases with stems of autumn leaves and berries. And buy yourself a huge designer mug to fill with hot chocolate. • Soft lighting and candlelight, executed through oversized storm lanterns helps create an atmosphere. Also try lighting plants from underneath to cast shadows across the ceiling. Be inspired by the latest collections from internationally famous fabric houses.

DÉCOR > ORIGINS COLLECTION BY ALHAMBRA INTERNATIONAL This new collection’s inspiration stems from nature and the spirit of romanticism, in which traditional design concepts reign, updated by means of innovative texture and colour combinations, and the fusion of different materials with fine textiles. This special blend gives the line a fresh, rejuvenated feel. Origins is classic and warm through the use of linen, cotton and viscose velvet along with other traditional textiles. In some designs the simplicity is punctuated by modern, colourful, eye-catching stripes, prints, botanic-inspired motifs, intricate damask textures and lace trims. The overall effect of this combination is one of comfort and seclusion, giving a homely feel. There is also an exotic influence in the form of Oriental-inspired trims, offering an elegant and refined style, ideally suited for both classic and contemporary environments. Origins’ colour theme is composed of a wide variety of different tones, ranging from neutral shades to more intense ones such as olive green, burgundy, deep brown, earth tones and rosy pinks. These colours and finishes make Origins a tribute to nature by reviving and updating the most beautiful elements from the past. alhambraint.com

YOUR FRIENDLY HOME INTERIOR DESIGNERS IN GUADALMINA Founded by Jonty Richard Lewis Healey, Richard Lewis Interiors (RLI) has earned itself recognition by many as one of the most exciting English interior design companies here on the southern coast of Spain. From La Zagaleta on the Costa del Sol, Sandbanks in the UK to Mombasa in Kenya, Jonty really has trodden the boards of the interior design world, and at such a tender age, he still has a great deal more to give… The Richard Lewis Interiors shop in Guadalmina offers fabrics, wallpapers and furniture with an in-house workshop where curtains, blinds and upholstery can all be made specifically to suit your requirements. They offer free design consultations so they do not charge for their time so Richard Lewis Interiors acts more like a retail shop with the added bonus of expert interior design advice. framing. The staff are always on hand to give useful and honest advice in a calm and relaxed atmosphere with Cafe del Mar music playing in the background and coffee at the ready. The beauty of Richard Lewis Interiors is that they handle everything themselves, even down to waiting for deliveries, and they do not sub-contract work. Cutting out subcontractors keeps the price down and enables Jonty and his team to have full control over the project ensuring that everything is carried out correctly and to the utmost standard. Property staging is also something that Richard Lewis Interiors like to do. Property staging is where a designer is sent in to prepare a property so that it is more marketable. Richard Lewis Interiors were approached to stage a house worth four million Euros and had been on the market for two to three years. Following a visit from Richard Lewis Interiors, the house was sold within a couple of months. RLI often gets its business through word-of-mouth recommendations. Jonty’s warm personality, artistic flair and meticulous attention to detail is why this company has continued to grow despite the economic crisis.

Alfresco fires are hot right now! PULL UP A CHAIR AND ENJOY THESE FANTASTIC OUTDOOR FIREPLACES. THEY’LL HEAT UP YOUR AUTUMN ENTERTAINING WHILE KEEPING YOU WARM ONCE THE SUN SETS. 32

AUTUMN

Outdoor fireplaces provide all of the same great benefits that you enjoy by the one inside of your home. Think of how good it feels to get warmed by the fire after you have been shoveling snow all morning. There’s nothing quite as comforting and soothing as a dancing flame! Well, when you have a fireplace in your outdoor living space, you are able to enjoy the fresh air a little longer, even when the sun goes down. Not to mention, they offer light, security, safety and they can help keep the bugs away! If you have been thinking about adding a fireplace to your patio or deck, you may want to learn about the different styles first. That may help when you are trying to make a shopping decision.

OUTDOOR LIVING > Chiminea Fireplaces — There is something unbelievably comforting and rustic about chiminea fireplaces. They just make you feel at home! While most are familiar with the old terracotta styles that were known for cracking if they got too hot, there are much more durable types of chiminea fireplaces available today. You will find them made from cast aluminium with cast iron grates, many of which require every minimal maintenance.

Three wonderful wood burning outdoor fireplaces that also serve as gathering spots for entertaining. The Zero, The Rondo and The Zen from AK47 are simultaneously modern and rustic. Made of steel, stone and copper, the large round fireplaces are as great looking when in use as they are when not in use. All three styles featured here are sold in moderately easy to assemble kits. www.ak47space.com

Gas Fireplaces — If you are concerned about the environment, you will be happy to learn that gas outdoor fireplaces are pretty safe for the environment. You can find them in wall-mounted or column styles as well as torches and stunning firebowls that will have your neighbours jealous. Gel Fireplaces — Here’s another environmentallyfriendly option and you don’t need a gas line, wood or an electrical outlet to enjoy them. All you need is a can of OSHA and EPA-approved gel and you can receive warmth and create ambiance. There are some that are small like lanterns that can be scattered around for all of your guest to enjoy too. The great thing about small portable fireplaces is that you can always bring them inside with you when you’ve had enough fresh air for the day.

THE ZERO

THE ZEN

THE RONDA

Fire Pits — There is something extremely intriguing about fire pits. Similar to chiminea fireplaces, they have a way of drawing in a crowd. If you have a gathering, don’t be surprised to find all of your guests circled around your fire pit talking, even if it’s not cold out! They come in a ton of different shapes and sizes, some with a screen enclosure, others use clean-burning natural gas or propane.

Stylish and unique, the EcoSmart Fire Bulb combines the raw element of fire with organic-inspired design, brought to life within a contemporary steel wire frame. The EcoSmart Fire Bulb is fully portable and illuminates and inspires any indoor or outdoor space. And its curvaceous design complements modern landscaped garden environments with grace and ease. www.ecosmartfire.com

A Modern Bedroom for a Modern You COOL, CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSY TOUCHES FOR YOUR SLEEPING SPACE

Add glamour, style and an undeniable streak of fun to your bedroom with this modern Italian contemporary Histoire Round Bed by Prelapi.

38

AUTUMN

Our rooms are our sanctuary, a place of rest and relaxation so when you need a bedroom that lets you escape from the bustle and pressure of the actual world or even simply want to add more style, the simplicity of modern design creates a serenity that makes that feeling even more prevalent. Something is very calming and comforting about having a room that provides exactly what you need, and nothing more. Sleek lines and minimal furniture will make your room feel bigger, and employing a monochrome colour scheme can help encourage a feeling of everything being perfectly in order. Square furniture, cubist patterns, and platform beds all make up a portion of this décor scheme. WALL COLOUR This is very important because the colour of the walls is a hallmark of a modern bedroom. Think outside the box and consider some of this year’s trendy colours. Naturals. If you’ve ever wanted to make your bedroom akin to a haven in the wilderness then picture medium to dark browns, mossy greens, and light greys. Throw in a dash of orange, red, or purple if you want to add a bit more personality in the room. Botanicals. If you love natural tones, but like a bit more colour than dark browns or green, consider combining more botanical greens and combine them with shades of blue. For a splash of colour you can choose some hibiscus prints, roses, or other botanicals wallpapers. Co-ordinate the rest of your bedroom by matching your textiles to one or more of the colours in the paper, or use similar tones. Powerful Pink. Pink isn’t the girly colour it used to be – it’s bold and gorgeous. Sizzling pinks can bring sophistication to a drab bedroom, and can be combined with other shades (like grey and brown) to make for a beautiful sleeping area, for males and females alike. If overall pink is a bit too much, just add a dash here and there to brighten up your sleeping area. Luxury Lavender and Gold. Ever wanted a room fit for royalty? Consider combining shades of lavender and gold or silver to make a luscious statement. Bronze, gold, silver – metallic wallpapers can effect a remarkable change in a bedroom and turn it into a high-class haven for sleeping. Pair it with a luxury duvet cover, a gorgeous ornate lamp and metallic cushions. Black and White. Black and white never goes out of style, and it can add a level of sophistication to any CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

bedroom, large or small. Paint the walls a lovely white or grey-tone, and get some new bedding for an instant change. Add some gold or silver tones for an added touch of class, or consider some bold black and white wallpapers and fabrics for an extra bold statement. These colours create a relaxing backdrop to contemporary bedrooms, which is more interesting and trendy than boring beige. FURNITURE SELECTION This can be a very critical step. Modern bedroom furniture is elegant and minimal in design. Arrangement of the actual selected furniture can turn the actual bedroom right into a sanctuary for rest and relaxation. Consider black or dark woods that are slick and minimalist in design. Low-back chairs and low benches can add a convenient sitting area without taking up too much space. For the ultimate in sleek and sophisticated, consider upgrading to a platform bed. Found in chocolaty browns, marble whites and basic blacks, these beds are so understated that you can’t help but feel relaxed getting into one. Combine this with a minimalist approach, or jazz it up with some funky colours and fabrics.

DRESS YOUR BED Your bed should give a person the comfort you will need at the end of a long day. Try to choose the most luxurious bed you can afford and choose colours which will evoke happy, calm feelings. Remember that in modern design, the whole bed is brought into focus. It is not just your comforter or quilt that will be seen, but your sheets and throws. When you have the space crunch inside your

The curving stucture incorporates an ingenious concealed storage space. www.mazzaliarmadi.it bedroom, opt for monochromatic colour schemes. The right size and number of pillows — fluffy, big ones to small bolsters — on your bed can enhance the actual look of your bedroom too. STORAGE SOLUTIONS Get rid of clutter and make your room more habitable with some quality storage. Modern bedrooms are known for their clean simplicity and it‘s impossible to achieve this when it looks like a yard sale has exploded in the room. Get rid of all non-essential elements and maximise the actual space in your bedroom with built-in closets. Keep extra bedlinen in rolling boxes under the bed, and turn the area over and around your headboard into a gorgeous bookcase. Woven baskets or hand-papered boxes can hold your odds and ends, and will give your room some texture and organization. Under-the-bed storage systems are a great option and walk-in closets are the practical and the luxurious option. Think of how peaceful your room will be once everything is squared away neatly. FLOORING With bedroom flooring the eco-friendly trend continues with recycled wood floors, environmentally friendly carpets, and recycled fibre throw rugs. Colours for flooring are neutral, with the occasional splash in a throw rug to tie the room together. Bamboo floors and rugs are also quite popular, as they are quick to replenish themselves and are long lasting, so they are much better for the environment. Even if you are not ready to replace the flooring, you can always invest in a nice area rug to change the look of your room.

LIGHTING Again the theme for bedrooms is to keep it natural, so open your blinds. If natural lighting isn’t possible, consider a range of lighting types; including focal lights over work spaces and to highlight artwork, with ambient lighting to set the mood. Add some decorative side-table lamps to complete the look. The key to good bedroom lighting is to ensure that you highlight all the positive aspects of your room – bed, seating area, art, etc. to put the room in a positive light. ACCESSORIES Home accents in modern bedrooms are reduced to only a few key pieces that have a big impact such as a large framed print, an elegant vase, a beautiful carved glass piece and elegant or funky lampshades. To keep the clutter-free look that is so crucial in a contemporary design, do not crowd the room with accents that draw attention in any direction. According to the actual principles associated with Feng Shui, you should keep a few plants within your bedroom to maintain harmony and balance inside your life. In the event you can maintain them, plants are a great option to enliven your own bedroom. Giving your bedroom a whole new look can be a big task, but in the end it will provide you with the sleeping and relaxing space you have always wanted.

A new breed of bathrooms HIGH DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY ARE SHAPING THE BATHROOMS OF THE FUTURE

46

AUTUMN

From its humble beginnings as a purely utilitarian space, the bathroom has evolved into a personal retreat, a model of water efficiency, a testing ground for new materials, and a place where big-name designers can showcase their creativity. The one thing that’s clear about bathroom design this year is that there’s no such thing as a standard bathroom: it’s all about individualism. The top bathroom companies have unveiled stunning new 2011 ranges, but it’s up to the creative homeowner to mix and match and put together a bathroom that’s both unique and very personal.

Duravit New Darling in azure blue. www.duravit.com

SPLASHES OF COLOUR Bathrooms used to be characterised by their distinct lack of colour, but the tide has turned and last year, the experts championed a high gloss finish to bathroom furniture and tiles with blacks and crimson reds but 2011 sees a much more natural colour palette. Greys, whites and cool blues will be the colours of choice which are more accessible to a wider range of properties and bathroom spaces. Bold, bright statement hues still make their mark, but muted neutral tones linked to nature are the colours of the future.

GROHE Veris: Sensual design for enhanced comfort. www.grohe.com

In keeping with this trend, Duravit’s Darling New furniture range is bringing spring into the bathroom. The fronts of the new range come together to create a bright symphony of colours: refreshing fresh green or relaxing azure blue provide a cheerful splash of colour in the bathroom. Their lively structures of “pine silver” and “pine terra” add more subtle dashes of colour. GROHE also recently launched one of its most successful collections, the Rainshower® WaterColours Natural Collection which are available in six colour variants, namely Natural Sandstone, Cloudy CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

Limestone, Fired Clay, Sheer Marble, Misty Slate and Frosted Granite. These subdued colours and the ring shaped shower head make for an intriguing sense of elegance and style. Ceramica Cielo’s Tatoo Collection by Karim Rashid is created from the designer’s kaleidoscopic imagination — a tatoo of colour and graphic effects. Assertive strokes, like those of a fountain pen, combined with extreme design and packed with stylistic perfect pop style, all add up to a description of the six geometric patterns — isla, kaos, fly, quark, rain and rimmel — of these fabulous shower pans. MATERIAL GAINS Bathroom manufacturers are also experimenting with a growing range of materials and textures. Sink basins and baths venture beyond white ceramic styles, using natural materials such as glass, stone, modern stainless steel and even wood. New Italian bathroom furnishings brand, Zaninelli Bagni, has launched a collection carved from natural stone. The CNC Collection was designed by Mr Smith Studio in Milan and includes single and double washbasins, counter tops, built-in or floor standing basins, shower receptors and bathtubs. Exhilarating airiness is introduced to the bathroom by Villeroy & Boch award-winning My Nature collection with its wonderfully organic curved form. The attention-grabber of the collection though, is the free-standing bath. Here minimalistic design is combined with natural elements in a surprising material mix of wood and acrylic. This enthroned bath with its curved symmetrical form makes a strong design statement. Great bathing comfort is also ensured through generous interior dimensions and a high rim that offers perfect head support.

The Duravit “St. Trop” designed by Philippe Starck is a new sleek steam shower that takes up no more than one square metre of floor space.

The Giorgio Armani Roca bathroom

DESIGNER ORIENTATED A key trend currently sweeping through the bathroom sector are tie-ups between bathroom manufacturers and high-profile designers, transforming the bathroom into a space that is now as much about style as it is about function. Roca, for example, recently teamed up with Giorgio Armani to create a new bathroom concept. The

Armani Roca bathroom consists of an entire interior design solution, including not only furniture but lighting, wallcoverings and ceiling treatments. Hansgrohe is another company that has always been happy to form strategic partnerships with design leaders, having worked with Patricia Urquiola, the Bouroullec Brothers and Antonio Citterio, among others.

The base vanity unit which Philippe Starck designed for his Starck 1 bathroom range back in 1994 is one of the best-known items of bathroom furniture. The unit with its distinctive conical form is to be found in prestigious surroundings all over the world, such as the world’s highest building, the Burj Chalifa. Philippe Starck has now introduced geometric variations to this conical form for Duravit.

EXTREME COMFORT Much has been written about the bathroom’s transformation into a personal haven. Distancing itself from its purely functional roots, the bathroom has blossomed into a personalised wellness retreat. This is particularly notable when it comes to the showering experience. A more traditional option is the Finnish-designed Sky Line sauna, which has a glass ceiling and frontdecorated panel for a sleek, modern look. countered in urban environments where every square centimetre counts. This is where mimo’s space-saving concept works particularly well: compact washbasins, WCs and bidets, as well as a surprisingly small-sized bathtub make the range the mini option among bathrooms. The good news about 2011’s trends is they are not so extreme that you risk them looking out of place in your home or alienating potential buyers if you plan to sell your house in the near future, The effects are easy to achieve, even on a tighter budget and the luxurious styles mean a grown up and fashionable bathroom that you can enjoy.

Savvy Kitchens AS THE SIZE OF KITCHENS CONTINUES TO SOAR, SO DOES THE POPULARITY OF COUNTERTOP ISLANDS. Whether built-in or movable, versatile countertop islands not only provide homes for appliances and additional seating, work space, and storage, but also often serve as a kitchen’s hub and social center. Large kitchens may even have multiple units, each dedicated to a specific use. So prior to sitting down with your architect, kitchen designer, or cabinetmaker to plan your fantasy island, consider its scale, function, and style. The following tips will help you create and equip your space. SET THE BOUNDARIES First determine whether you have adequate room in your kitchen for an island. The magic number is 42 inches: That’s the minimum amount of space you’ll want between the unit and any surrounding object to ensure that the former doesn’t obstruct traffic flow. If you have tight quarters or a compact kitchen, San Francisco–based designer Lou Ann Bauer suggests opting for a small

portable piece such as a butcher-block counter on casters in lieu of a built-in, so that the fixture can be moved when not needed. CONSIDER THE FUNCTION How will you use the unit: Will it be where you’ll create gourmet meals? Eat breakfast? House your china? Vary an island’s height—or employ a variety of countertop surfaces— to create distinct zones for different activities. For example, your design could include a 36-inch-high work counter for food prep and a 42 inch high bar for casual dining; likewise, you might incorporate a wooden butcher’s block into an otherwise marble-topped unit. Of course, if you opt to have multiple islands, each can be devoted to a separate set of activities. No island should be more than 4 feet wide, so that you can easily reach the middle of its countertop. An island’s purpose determines its placement. You can use the element to divide the kitchen and living areas in an

open-plan house, or to delineate working and eating zones. If you want to utilize the unit for baking, make sure it provides easy access to the stove, sink, and refrigerator. If you will employ it for buffets, keep the public side open. And remember: Rounding an island’s edges draws in guests while squaring them creates a buffer. OUTFIT IT ACCORDINGLY Equip an island to serve its role. If it will function as a breakfast bar, stools and a cantilevered countertop are essential. If it will house a cooktop, add a vent hood overhead or a popup downdraft venting system; choose a unit in the size and power recommended by your cooktop maker and have it finished in a material that coordinates with your kitchen. If food prep will be the main activity, consider installing a small sink; make it more than 9 inches deep to prevent splashing. Be aware that some fixtures may require a plumber or electrician to put in additional supply and drain lines or outside venting.

Islands can greatly expand a kitchen’s storage space. Options range from cabinets and drawers for stashing china and utensils to shelves and openings perfect for holding cookbooks and baskets. As for appliances, wine chillers and warming drawers are popular; orient them toward adjacent dining or entertaining areas. LIGHTEN UP As the centre for so many different kinds of activities, islands require a versatile, multilayered lighting scheme. Recessed canisters throughout the area can provide general illumination, but you’ll also want to supplement them with overhead spotlights or pendants for close-up work. If the counter-top is made of a reflective material such as stainless steel, be sure to fit your illumination sources with bottom diffusers or use half-chrome-mirrored bulbs to prevent glare. SYNC THE STYLE By virtue of its location, size, and bulk, an island acts as a focal point in many kitchens. But rather than visually dominate the space, it should fit in with the overall design scheme; this is especially true for units that function as transitional points between the kitchen and adjoining spaces. Designers can also switch up an island’s appearance by giving it furniture-look panelling, varying the finishes on its counter-tops and surrounds, and experimenting with its shape, for example, by adding curved edges. By creating an island that combines form with function, you will help your kitchen look and perform better. Keep the above principles in mind when mapping out your multitasking unit, and it will serve you well for years to come.

Luxe Low Level Lighting LIGHTING CAN MAKE OR BREAK AN INTERIOR, SO IN THIS ISSUE WE’VE PUT TOGETHER A COLLECTION OF CEILING, FLOOR AND WALL LAMPS TO HELP YOU SET THE RIGHT MOOD. The aesthetic importance of lighting is seldom questioned. Good lighting is often the difference between spaces that are warm, welcoming and full of depth, and ones that are cold, flat and uninviting. Good lighting will enhance the design, creating drama and interest – and it will draw attention to all the right interior elements, rather than itself. But the days of lighting for the sake of lighting have drawn to a close. It is widely acknowledged that artificial lighting currently accounts for some 30% of electricity consumption in a commercial building – and that buildings collectively account for 40% of total world energy use. This leaves designers with a massive responsibility to create effective, intelligent lighting solutions that will significantly contribute in minimising energy wastage. The pressure is on. Designers have no choice but to create lighting solutions that are innovative, aesthetically-impressive, technically sound and, also, energy efficient.

LIGHTING BY CATELLANI & SMITH Inspired by the light, rolling bushes, blown by the wind in the Mexican dessert. www.catellanismith.com BELLISSIMA BY BARBARA WEBER www.bellissimabybarbaraweber.com

Basic Lighting Types There are three basic types of lighting that work together to light your home. A good lighting plan combines all three types (know as “layering”) to light an area, according to function and style. • Ambient – Provides overall, general lighting which radiates a comfortable level of brightness. Ambient lighting can be accomplished by chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights, or with lanterns mounted on the outside of a home. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan. • Task – Helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, sewing, cooking, homework, hobbies, crafts, games or balancing your checkbook. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting, under cabinet lighting and even certain chandeliers, as well as by portable floor and desk lamps. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows but bright enough to prevent eyestrain. • Accent – Adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of a decorating scheme, it is used to emphasize paintings, house plants, sculptures and collectables; or to highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outdoor landscaping. To be effective, accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it. This usually is provided by track, recessed or wall-mounted fixtures for indoor lighting and floodlights for outdoor lighting. DESIGNER IN FOCUS >

Timothy John Timothy grew up in a laid back sunny beach town in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, and spent most of his free time on a surfboard. He then stowed the board away and spent a number of years in his twenties travelling and living overseas. He returned to New Zealand in 2007 with a clear passion for design and has since been immersed in intensive study and experimentation. Inspired by the ‘art of furniture’, Timothy John is not governed by theory but by heart and imagination. Materials and objects of interest initiate the design process. In some cases it dictates keeping true to the original nature of the material. In other cases the potential is extensive. While applying a comprehensive, hands-on approach, materials are manipulated to test their functional & structural boundaries. Coincidence and inevitable surprise throughout the design process is embraced by working in a freestyle experimental manner. The current collection portrays these explorations with utilitarian materials being of special interest. The rough and the raw are confronted; techniques are challenged. The result? A messy studio and finished objects that are playful, engaging and bold. www.timothyjohn.net timothyjohndesign@gmail.com

WOVEN SERIES: THE GENIUS, THE MASTERMIND, THE DEVIANT The Misfits

THE BOSS Lounge Chair – powder coated steel & industrial shock cord The Boss adventure began with an interest in industrial shock cord, a utilitarian product manufactured to meet a very specific and practical purpose. The challenge was to put a new and unexpected spin on the material while refining it to appeal to the art and design market. The steel frame takes on a shape that is reminiscent of the pioneers of Modern furniture design. This familiar form provides not only the framework for the ‘upholstery’ but in a contrasting colour finish it exposed as a striking sculptural element. 300 meters of shock cord is woven around and through the frame in such a way that no additional support or fixing components are required. Appropriate for indoor and outdoor use.

Stool, side table, pedestal – enamelled pine The Misfit series marks the beginning of a career in design for Timothy John. Intrigued by a pile of timber offcuts on a building site, a random selection of wood pieces of varying shapes and sizes were collected. They were arranged, rearranged then rearranged again and became the start of an interest around the unseen and unexpected potential of industrial materials applied in furniture design. Development of the design evolved naturally, as though the individual pieces were meant to be grouped as such. Nothing forced. When experimenting with finish options, the wood’s features and flaws were covered and filled, resulting in a beautiful finish initially. However, it was apparent soon thereafter that the solution was strained. The final prototype presents a product that keeps true to the material’s natural characteristics. The Misfit stands alone as a beautiful sculptural piece. It also meets a number of different furniture functions, from table and counter stool, side table, pedestal and banked together as a bench or coffee table.

Lounge chairs & floor standing clock – powder coated steel, industrial felt The Woven series is comprised of experimentation around hand weaving and wrapping techniques. The concept was initially inspired by a previously designed steel wire ball pendant light shade. The wire, when handled, naturally fell into a ball-like structure, which then later became the technique used to create the framework for the Genius and Mastermind chairs An interest in creating texture through weaving is also a key component in the series. Industrial synthetic felt, intended for lining nautical vessels is cut and sewn into strips then woven around the steel framework to form a unique covering. Creating the Genius first inspired the making of a second piece in which the steel wire frame is semiexposed. The Mastermind is essentially the Genius, partially deconstructed, showcasing just how beautiful the body under all its layers can be. The Deviant clock exhibits these very same materials and techniques, applied to a large Grandfather clock form, putting a twist on tradition. The series provokes thought and emotion. Viewers cannot help but reach out to touch and interact with each piece.

Developing a t a e grSpanish Garden BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE Practical holistic gardeners and authors living in Spain for 25 years.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN STACK UP? Apart from the swimming pool terrace, how much use did you make of your garden this past summer and will you during the autumn? Does it take maximum advantage of the Mediterranean climate we experience? Is it a garden in which it is enjoyable to walk around, work in, take siestas, eat out in on most days of the year and at the same time provide some of the family’s fruit and vegetables and perhaps even eggs? If not we provide a basic framework for a garden that matches an outdoor life style with the garden developed as the main room of the house for most months of the year.

noche, san diego, frangipani, mock orange, citrus trees, freesias, lilies, passion flowers, sweet peas, geraniums, and naturally culinary and medicinal herbs. • The growing of a variety of herbs for use in cooking as well as for their natural aromatherapeutic and medicinal effects. Herbs can be grouped in a herb garden or on a rockery or spread around the garden in mixed beds. • The traditonal Spanish sound of dripping water from a fountain, the running water of a waterfall into or between ponds or a creative mini water feature. Solar pumps allow features to be located safely anywhere in the garden without expensive wiring systems. • The tasteful selection and placement of ornaments and groups of pots. Some of the later left empty and others planted up.

A FRAMEWORK FOR A GREAT GARDEN • Matches and enables an outdoor lifestyle for most of the year by, amongst other things, providing for summer shade and sheltered winter sun. Only with these can a Spanish garden become the most used room of the house. • An attractive and interesting network of terraces and paths. Terraces of different sizes for different activities such as cooking and entertaining, secluded siestas, sunning after a dip in the pool or a quiet winters read. Pathways that lead one from one attractive part of the garden to another opening up both internal and external vistas en route. Curving rather than straight paths and the use of a variety of surfaces can add to the magic of a new garden even before the first plants are planted. • A number of interesting and contrasting mini gardens, patios or corners. The pool area treated as one of several mini gardens rather than the only feature of the garden. If you only use it for five or six months a year why stare at it day in day out throughout the year? Make each side of the house a unique mini garden for interest. • A variety of colour schemes in different parts of the garden using plantings with the many hues and textures of green foliage as well as the subtle or blazing colours of the flowers. Our book ‘Your Garden in Spain – Planning planting and maintenance’ includes an important chapter in this respect – chapter 2 ‘Painting with plants’ plus descriptions of some 400 useful plants. Sufficient for you to chose from whether on the coast or inland. • With the generally benign climate an amazing range of flowering plants, fruit and vegetables can be grown provided the soil is first improved. But do be creative in how you group the flowering plants and integrate the growing of fruit and vegetables in cottage style or separate areas. • The use of plants with interesting architectural shapes. Carefully sited groups of palm trees, cordylines, cacti and aloes, or green or purple leaved aeoniums can be as effective as a bank of flowering shrubs. • Perfume throughout the year as one passes through the entrance gate and around the garden. Favourites include jasmines, roses, honeysuckles, galan de

• The growing of even just a few seasonal vegetables that can be harvested and eaten fresh especially if grown ecologically. Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain describes what can be grown season by season. Autumn, the second Spring of Spain, is a good time to start growing vegetables as at this time you can sow or plant many vegetables for harvesting during the autumn, at Christmas, during the winter and in early Spring. • Attraction of an interesting range of beneficial wildlife ranging from geckoes on the walls at night that catch flying insects to lizards on rocks and frogs and dragon flies around a the pond. Thick hedges will not only give privacy but nesting sites for birds. Butterflies are unfortunately less numerous in some areas than twenty years ago due to urbanisations and the use of agricultural and garden chemicals. So do go ecological. Neem, our favourite insecticide, is now easier to find as Flower have added two neem products to their range. • No we have not mentioned a lawn. For us it is not an essential ingredient of a great garden or that natural in Spain. We would rather spend the time and water required to maintain a worthwhile lawn on flowering plants and trees and eating well from the garden. Naturally you won’t achieve such a garden within a year unless very small. But do have a clear vision of what you are aiming for. Get ready to start once the autumn rains cool off the weather. n o i t a r i p s In for your garden LA ALAMEDA GARDENS IS A BOTANICAL GARDEN IN GIBRALTAR, SPANNING AROUND 6 HECTARES The gardens were founded in 1816 by Governor of Gibraltar General George Don in order to provide a recreational area for the Garrison at the time. Serving that purpose for many years, the gardens fell into disrepair in the 1970s until the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens project, funded by a firm of environmental consultants and managers, Wildlife (Gibraltar) Limited, came about in 1991. Since 1994, the Gardens contain also a zoo: the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park. Among the sights of interest the visitor to Alameda Gardens will see are such things as the Red sand soil, lovely plants such as the Paper Narcissus, rare plants such as the Gibraltar sea Lavender, and multiple plants found only on Gibraltar. PLANTS OF THE GARDENS The plants of the Alameda Gardens are a combination of native species and others brought in from abroad, often from former British territories like Australia and South Africa with which Gibraltar had maritime links at the time of the British Empire. Since 1991 many new species have been planted, some growing in Gibraltar for the first time. Some of the other beds are dedicated to the plants of California, Australia, South Africa and the Canary Islands, regions with a climate similar to Gibraltar’s. The Family Beds display plants according to selected plant families.

CAPPUCCINO NEW CHIC RESTAURANT AND BAR ON MARBELLA’S SEAFRONT In Mallorca, Cappuccino can be found in many of the important towns across the island and are one of the most popular meeting points amongst the cosmopolitan sophisticates. Now Cappuccino have opened in Marbella bringing its Mallorquín charm across the waters to the mainland. Priding themselves on quality, service and good music, they certainly stick by their promises. Situated on the paseo marítimo in front of the Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe, tucked neatly underneath the Michelin star restaurant, Calima, Cappuccino is in good company. With a comfortable indoor lounge and a sprawling outdoor terrace offering an uninterrupted view out to the Mediterranean Sea, those that visit Cappuccino can enjoy fresh simple food in a chic and relaxing environment or just indulge in one (or two!) of the many creative cocktails that Cappuccino has to offer. The immaculately dressed staff buzz around unobtrusively and cannot do enough to ensure that your experience at Cappuccino is a perfect one. Cappuccino also have their own chill-out CDs comprising of Latin rhythms, jazz, bossa-nova, Balearic rhythms and much more. They are played out all day and night creating an ideal atmosphere to relax. The decor is very natural combining stone, foliage and wood keeping the look very clean, timeless and unpreten-

tious. The menu suits all tastes with a varied international menu consisting of good quality fresh ingredients generously presented beautifully on the plate. The dishes are colourful and fresh and you can enjoy anything from a simple crunchy Greek salad, a satisfying smoked salmon sandwich to an aromatic chicken Yakitori with rice. Living on the Costa del Sol or Gibraltar, we have become very accustomed to the usual cocktails served up in many of the bars dotted along the coastline, but Cappuccino have also brought some new ideas over to the peninsula to scintillate our tastebuds such as the elegant Hendrick’s Gin and Tonic with rose petals and cucumber, the non-alcoholic Barman’s Special which is a fruity blend of orange, strawberries and banana, or the Japanese Mandarin Caipirinha, crammed with baby mandarins, Bombay Sapphire gin, brown sugar and kumquats.

THE LANDING’S Gibraltar

A DRINK BY THE WATERSIDE AT

SUNSET OR A MEAL ESPECIALLY PREPARED FOR YOU, THE LANDING’S RESTAURANT IN QUEENSWAY QUAY MARINA IS SURE TO PLEASE AND SURPRISE YOU. After months of hard work refurbishing and equipping the former Boatyard Restaurant, residents waited with eager anticipation for The Landing’s to finally open its doors on the 1st July. It was an opportunity to showcase the evening à la carte menu consisting predominantly of fish dishes with a twist on meat and vegetarian fusion cuisine. The Landing’s is a tribute to the hard work put in by Ann and Gary, and a boost to what Queensway Quay has to offer, now standing out as one of the finest restaurants in Gibraltar. With a passion for food, good service and ambience, Ann wanted to bring something different to Gibraltar. Having dined in many fine restaurants in the past she wanted to bring all that was good and great into one. Luck, fate or simply being in the right place at the right time! What ever you call it they now have as part of the team, chef Patrick Rodgers, whose past experience includes the prestigious Savoy Hotel in London as Sous & Head Chef then as Executive Chef at Secrets Resort & Spa in Jamaica. His flair and experience have been truly inspirational for those who now work with him in the kitchen and for those customers that have had the opportunity of enjoying the new dining experience at The Landing’s Restaurant. Ann brings a wealth of management experience and entrepreneurial flair from her roles as Customer Care Manager and Marketing Manager for the largest health club chain in the UK. She even found time to run her own catering company. Ann says, “I believe that Gary and I have created a dining experience that is second to none, in a beautiful and prestigious location where customers can relax, enjoy great food and take in the superb waterside surroundings. We are delighted that chef Patrick Rodgers has been able to create a menu that, as well as being affordable, can certainly be classed as fine dining using fresh sustainable produce.” The Landings has introduced its own choice of a two-course Sunday Lunch Special served from 11.30am and daily Early Bird Specials from 5.30pm to 7.00pm at £12.95 along with their Every Day Lunch Menu. There are also vegetarian options and a children’s menu available.

Keep it Natural EASY YOGURT DIPPING SAUCES

Benefits of Yogurt

Tzatziki

Raita

Greek-style basic tzatziki: combine 1 cup plain lowfat Greek-style yogurt, 1/2 cup finely chopped seeded cucumber, 1 tablespoon chopped mint, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon white pepper. Cover, chill, serve.

Indian-style basic raita: combine 1 + 1/2 cups plain low-fat yogurt, 3/4 cup chopped seeded peeled cucumber, 3/4 cup chopped seeded tomato, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon garam masala. Cover and chill before serving.

UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS OF YOGURT AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE EATING IT EVERY DAY. Healthy Bacterias. Yogurt contains digestive bacteria, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, these help to eliminate harmful microorganisms from your system that have been shown to cause intestinal infections. If you’re tired of suffering from constipation, indigestion, or irritable bowel syndrome, these cultures can be your ticket to better health. When you’re shopping for yogurt in the grocery store, look for the words “contains live and active cultures” to be printed on the container. Weight Loss. For most people, the dream of washboard abs is something that only exists in movies and fitness magazines. However, scientific studies have shown that one of the health benefits of yogurt is that people who consume it are able to shed unwanted belly fat much easier than those that don’t include this snack in their daily diet. Watch the fat and sugar in some of the fancy yogurts. Yogurt is one of those health-halo foods, but not if it’s full-fat. Scan the ingredient list for added sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, maltose, maple syrup, or fruit juice concentrate. Six ounces of typical plain nonfat yogurt have about 11 grams of natural sugar and 80 calories; flavoured varieties can add as much as 14 extra grams of sugar and 50 or so calories.

Now your fat can become your

best asset! NOW THERE IS A TWO-IN-ONE COSMETIC SURGERY SOLUTION WHERE YOU CAN LOSE FAT WHERE YOU DON’T WANT IT AND PUT IT EXACTLY WHERE YOU DO... INTO YOUR BREASTS! Breast augmentation using silicone gel implants is a very popular procedure these days, taking about one and a half hours to perform and around a week to recover from. The surgery usually costs four to five thousand Euros and lasts for many years. There is the possibility of someone who has undergone this surgery to have to return years down the line due to a rupture or capsular contracture (where the scar tissue capsule that is formed around the implant becomes too small for the implant making the breast hard and painful), but this only happens in a very small percentage of cases. Some women prefer to have a Macrolane filler which is a stabilised hyaluronic acid that is injected into the breast.

84

AUTUMN

This procedure can take between one to two hours and can be administered under local anaesthetic in an ambulatory room without any surgical side-effects. The problem with this treatment is that the Macrolane can migrate forming unsightly cysts, it is expensive and the effect only lasts a couple of years. Coming from USA but still not widely used in Europe is the Brava Breast Enhancement and Shaping System bra which is made up of two semi-rigid domes, controlled by a SmartBox mini-computer which analyses the breast tissue and tension on it. The device uses a gentle three-dimensional pull on the breasts, which makes the breast form new tissue resulting in an increase of around half a cup to a full cup size. The tension is gentle but needs to be sustained for at least eleven hours a day. The limitation in gain of cup size and that it can get in the way of normal daily life as you have to wear the bra all day are the main reasons that this treatment is still very rarely used. But now there is a breast augmentation method called autologous fat transfer that actually redistributes your fat into your own breasts and recovery time is only 24-48 hours. It is a great option for a younger woman who has some fat on her body that she would like to remove and at the same time go up one to one-and-a-half cup sizes. Your own body fat is harvested in cannulas, cleaned and centrifuged free from blood and then injected into the bust. The advantages of this kind of augmentation is that there are no visible incisions because the fat is injected, and there is no implant for your body to get used to as the enhancement has come from your own body. It looks natural because it is natural! The disadvantages of this treatment are that if you lose a lot of weight, you could lose weight on your breasts too and you can only inject a certain amount at one time, so normally, you need to have two sessions. Many believe this kind of treatment is the future because it is natural, it has longevity and is not as expensive as other treatments. To find out more about autologous fat transfer or any other breast augmentation surgery, contact: Dr Kaye at Ocean Clinic Av. Retro Hot Hatches SMALL AND RETRO-INSPIRED, EACH PERFORMING FAR BEYOND THEIR SIZE AND BOTH SET TO HIT THE EUROPEAN SHOWROOMS THIS AUTUMN.

e l t e e B VW A SPORTY NEW ATTITUDE

When the first Beetle rolled off the production line in 1938, it was simply called the Volkswagen —“the people’s car”— but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or 甲壳虫! Whatever the name, its popularity is not in question, with 21.5 million sold in the past 73 years. More than 60 years later, in 1998, the “New Beetle” rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original for a new generation of Volkswagen owners. Now, the third-generation of the internationally beloved Beetle is ready for prime time, and set to launch into the European market on October/November 2011. The latest generation moves away from design of the New Beetle of 1998 and instead draws on cues from the original and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005 – a type of hot rod based on the New Beetle. While the New Beetle was defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), the new model has broken free of this geometry. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front bonnet is longer, the front windscreen is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline giving it a more masculine and dynamic appearance. Inside the cabin, the Beetle’s designers created a modern, practical and distinctive appearance with easy to identify and ergonomic controls. Certain features, such as the glovebox and colour accent panels hark back to the original. Three trim levels will be available – Beetle, Design and Sport – and each will

be endowed with its own individual character and features. A wide range of innovative optional equipment will also be available, ranging from Keyless Access through satellite navigation systems and a panoramic sunroof to bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights – all of which are available for the first time on a Beetle. European buyers will have the choice of four engines ranging from an efficient 1.2-liter gasoline engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged model and a 1.6-liter turbo diesel version.

é p u o C i n Mi A RECIPE FOR UNBRIDLED DRIVING FUN.

Mini may have changed over the years, but the foundation of this small car its character traits and its cheekiness has remained the same. From its inception in the 1950s to today, people just can’t stop falling for it. Whether on- or off-road, it has always proved to be a bundle of energy. It’s combination of inimitable go-kart feeling and stamina has seen the Mini come under thousands of checkered flags. The strikingness of the Mini has seen it at the centre of some pretty highprofile attention over the years. Top designers, advertisers, media personalities, press photographers, even The Beatles have all sought out the Mini as a companion on a number of occasions. Loaded with personality, premium features and world class performance the new 2012 Coupe is Mini’s first-ever two-seater. A ferocious 2-seater that sips fuel and devours the road with abandon. Built just for you and one lucky passenger. A car that gives you the freedom of unbridled motoring and permission to say “No, I can’t pick your parents up at the airport.” Along with a unique body and interior concept, the first two-seater in its line-up sees Mini not only breathe new life into its successful racing history but also provide a shot in the arm for the super-compact sports car class. The selection of engines, chassis set-up, weight distribution and aerodynamic properties of the MINI Coupé are all focused on delivering optimum performance. As a result, the new car radiates the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling and achieves the best performance statistics ever recorded by a volume-produced MINI.

The new Coupé comes with a choice of three petrol engines and a diesel. Topping the range is the Mini John Cooper Works Coupé, with its 1.6-litre turbo engine making 211bhp and 260Nm of twist, which goes up to 280Nm with overboost. A level of chassis quality unmatched in the small car segment gives the new MINI model the handling flair you would expect from the brand. The precise Electric Power Steering, the standard-fitted DSC stability control system, powerful brakes and measures designed specifically to optimise torsional rigidity ensure the MINI Coupé driver can enjoy the ultimate in go-kart feeling. Its flat silhouette and innovative “helmet roof” lend the MINI Coupé a sporty and individual allure. In addition to the integral roof spoiler, an active rear spoiler optimises airflow at higher speeds. Helped by its extremely highopening tailgate and large luggage area with through-loading facility, the MINI Coupé displays outstanding versatility in day-to-day driving, when transporting leisure items or sports gear, and on trips out with a lucky partner. The MINI Coupe will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (1525 September) and is set to hit European showrooms on 1st October. Mini Coupè prices start at 21.600 euros www.mini.es

Thailand Mandarin Oriental

Take a trip to Thailand’s extraordinary capital Bangkok and there is really only one place to stay, at the iconic Oriental Hotel. The property’s rich history permeates its walls, and within moments of arrival, greeted by handmade, scented garlands of orchids, you know you are somewhere unique. Since the merger of Hong Kong’s unrivalled Mandarin Hotel with Bangkok’s exceptional Oriental Hotel, the Mandarin Oriental hotel group has gone on to create some of the finest properties in the world. For garden lovers, the established palms, lush plants and delicate orchids of The Oriental’s riverside grounds combine to create a wonderful exotic environment; one that could be recreated in part at home, with the use of striking architectural plants and seasonal flowers to add colour and interest. The hotel’s secluded infinity pool has rich green and black tiles, lending it a sophisticated appeal, which perfectly complements its tropical garden setting. Deep bowls filled with floating flower petals are a simple but beautiful additional touch to the gardens. Thailand is well known for its luxurious hardwoods and flawless silk, and there is no better place to see how these materials can be used to stunning effect than in one of the hotel’s amazing suites. ‘The Author’s Suite’ for example is a haven of tranquillity,

show casing how silk wall coverings can really transform a space. Hardwood floors are perfectly complemented by oriental rugs, whilst vintage ceramics and antique artisan pieces complete the look. The craftsmanship is wonderful, and again here one sees that investment in great quality materials and finishing makes a room look and feel extraordinary.

The St Regis One enters the St Regis through its ‘Rain Forest Gate’, a huge arch-like structure, covered in tropical vines, and edged with palms and exotic plants; its striking design confirms that one is entering a refined and special place. This is again confirmed as one is greeted in the expansive lobby, with its architectural features, superb chandeliers and the impressive staircase sculpture that is filled daily with fresh flower petals. These residences have a wealth of features and design

touches, where polished hardwoods and hard finished furnishings combine to create an exclusive feel. A contemporary twist on plantation shutters adds interest to the huge windows, and the welcoming, calming ambiance is enhanced with books, scented candles and authentic Asian artefacts. The bedroom suite is a perfect example of a private sanctuary. Its classic contemporary style four poster, draped generously with voiles, and made up with crisp white linens with perfect detailing make the bed totally five star. Outside the compact walled garden of the villa has bespoke water features and eye catching sculptures, meaning that even the smallest of spaces is rich in interest; although little can compete with the hypnotic beauty of the azure Indian Ocean and the clear blue sky.
