Bishop's Pastoral Letter to Vestries 2021 To our Clergy, Churchwardens and Parishioners Beloved in Christ, peace and grace be with you.

Grow! You may remember that in my letter to you last year, I invited each community to embrace the essence of our diocesan strategic plan, Growing in Christ. The invitation was simple…grow! Well, none of us could have imagined the scope with which we would have to adjust, change, turn, accommodate, and innovate in 2020. Almost every aspect of how we do Church would need to be transformed: from worship to administration, from pastoral care to sacramental ministry, from finance to stewarding buildings and property. On Sunday, March 15th we closed the doors of our buildings and we were jettisoned into another way of gathering and being the Church.

Parishes small and large, rural and urban turned to online worship, telephone ministry, driveway conversations, pre-recording and livestreaming. We thought we would be back in our buildings by Easter. My, how we were wrong about that. Maybe by Pentecost things would be normal again, we thought. Summer turned into fall. A partial opening under strict guidelines would give way to a second wave that would carry us through Advent and Christmas, Epiphany and now into Lent. Through it all we have learned to live outside our comfort zone and grow. Like being tossed into the deep end of the pool we are learning to swim.

The Jubilee offered by the Diocese in 2020 helped to shore up a faltering financial confidence. Many parishes report that online worship and programming is reaching a wider audience. Some parishes tell us that financial support and donations are holding steady. Clergy tell me that there is a growing trust, cooperation, and companionship with colleagues. Many parishes speak of collaborating with neighbouring communities. We have also been wrestling with how to serve those who are falling through the cracks of our social structures and safety nets, particularly those who live in precarious housing, grapple with food insecurity, mental health issues and domestic violence.

The murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 thrust us into the depths of confronting anti- black and systemic racism. Each year at vestry we ask you to consider supporting a social justice initiative. In 2021, we invite you to support the motion on Committing Ourselves to Anti-Racism. The initiatives that are outlined give all of us the opportunity to be agents of dismantling racism in all of its forms. We are called to change. Throughout this time of pandemic, we are doing more than just treading water… we are growing. I believe we are growing in trust of one another, and deeper still, in trust that God has this whole situation in hand. And trust calls us to be faithful and to be prepared.

As you gather for your vestry meeting, likely online, I want to say two things. The first is to express my profound gratitude for your faithfulness, hard work, creativity, and innovative ways thus far in this pandemic. I am thankful for the tireless leadership of our clergy; bishops, priests, and deacons. I am moved beyond words by the ministry of our lay leaders who move mountains to keep the church moving. Thank you.

The second thing is, be prepared. We hear this summons often in scripture. In the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, cries the prophet. I go to prepare a place for you, Jesus says to his disciples. Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season writes Paul to Timothy. As

circumstances begin to change, as the vaccine begins to take a hold for the better, I hope that you will take as much time planning for a return as you did when our doors closed in March of last year. Coming back will take a special kind of care and effort. It will take time to allay fears, it will take energy to coax the community to move forward in new ways. It will take a vision steeped in the Gospel of Jesus Christ to lift the eyes and hearts of a weary people.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6.9-10 Yours in Christ,

Bishop’s Pastoral Letter to York-Simcoe Vestries 2021

To our clergy, Churchwardens and Parishioners of York Central Deanery Beloved in Christ, peace and grace be with you.

It is my joy to send this personal greeting to all in York Central Deanery. After serving 45 years of ordained ministry, the last seven as Area Bishop of York Simcoe, we bade farewell to Bishop Peter Fenty as he stepped into retirement. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, pastoral care, prophetic voice and prayerful presence. As a result of his retirement and in concert with Bishop Jenny Andison becoming the next rector of St. Paul’s Bloor Street, the College of Bishops is once again in transition. In early 2020, I formed the Episcopal Leadership Working Group to help guide us in imagining how episcopal ministry might be expressed for the next season of our Church. Their report will be received shortly. In the meantime, Bishops Riscylla, Kevin and I will be sharing episcopal oversight in both York Simcoe and York Credit valley for the interim…it is my joy to be serving you.

I am thankful for the creative ways that you have been exercising ministry during these pandemic days, from offering worship and programming online to staying in touch with parishioners, reaching out to the most vulnerable and keeping an eye on mission and care. Throughout these difficult times we keep in prayer clergy and laity in our area who are facing significant health challenges. We pray for their families, care givers and the medical teams who support them.

We experienced both moments of joy and sorrow, arrival and departure last year. On November 22, 2020 we celebrated the new ministry of the Reverend Lisa Newland as the Incumbent at Christ Church, Stouffville and welcomed Lisa, her husband Geoff and their children Paige and Colin. We thank the Reverend Bob Bettson for his ministry at Christ Church as the Interim Priest in Charge. At the same time, we also grieved the loss of our friends and colleagues who departed this life. We remember especially: The Reverend Earl Gerber – Feb. 28, 2020 The Reverend Canon Jeremey Van Lane – March 4, 2020 The Reverend Katherine Treganowan – March 13, 2020 The Reverend Canon Thomas Crawford – May 4, 2020 The Reverend Sheilagh Ashworth – June 28, 2020 The Reverend Canon Frances Lightbourne – July 5, 2020 The Reverend Ronald Scott – July 6, 2020 The Reverend Robert (Bob) Sinclair – October 20, 2020 We continue to hold their family and friends in our prayers and we give thanks for the way they lived and served among us. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord.

As you gather for your annual vestry meeting, I commend to you the social justice motion Committing Ourselves to Anti-Racism. The Diocese of Toronto will be engaging all active clergy in anti-racism and bias training in 2021. We are steadfast in our commitment to eradicating racism in all its forms. We hope that you will consider how to engage in this endeavour in your parish.

I am moved beyond words by your generosity toward FaithWorks in 2020. York Central had a remarkable year. All nine parishes participated, most experiencing increased giving over 2019. As a whole, the deanery raised $110,053. This is an increase of nearly $51,000 over 2019. The Deanery was responsible for 53% of all funds raised in York Simcoe. Wow! Thank you for your commitment to helping the most vulnerable.

I am truly appreciative of the leadership and support of our Regional Dean, Rev. Mark Stacey for his commitment and support especially in this time of transition. Thank you to our liturgical officer, Rev. Canon Dr. Stephen Fields for his guidance with all matters of liturgy during this pandemic year. To our Youth Coordinators, Amy de Sousa & Sarah Layman a special word of gratitude for guiding, gathering and leading our youth through a year like no other. Finally, a word of deep thanks to our Area Administrative Assistant Jennipher Kean, who helps us all to keep moving, serving and offering ministry in York Simcoe. And she does so with such joy. Thank you Jennipher.

May God bless you in your ministry in 2021.

8. Diocesan Motion: Committing Ourselves to Anti-Racism (Social Justice Motion from Synod) This Vestry of Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill, assembled on Sunday, February 28, 2021, acknowledges that Anti-Black racism exists in our society and in our Church, and that it and all forms of racism against Black, Indigenous and other racialized people are a sin against God and against our neighbour.

We affirm the words of Paul the Apostle when he said “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus”.

(Galatians 2:27-28).

We are committed to the New Commandment that Jesus gave to his disciples and all who would follow him when he said “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”. (John 15:12) We commit ourselves to the recognition, dismantling, and elimination of Anti-Black and other forms of racism in our secular institutions, in our Church, and in ourselves, and to work for the full inclusion, participation and belongingness of Black, Indigenous and other racialized people in all sectors of our common life.

In light of this acknowledgment, affirmation and in keeping with these commitments, we join with the rest of our church, National and Diocesan, and undertakes to do the following: 

Pray, deliberately, in all aspects of our life at Holy Trinity, recognizing that we cannot fix things with our own power but need first to come to the Source of all Life and Truth, to be refreshed, strengthened and, in the power of the Spirit, be led forward with the hope of realizing God’s dream of fullness of life for all God’s people.



Support our church’s Rejuvenation Project, already begun, to enable our members to work towards fulfilling their dream of what their future church will be, recognizing that this will require honest and open conversations on this and other subjects.



Support the anti-racism and anti-bias training initiatives and projects of our Diocese and National Church, and encourage our members to participate in them.



Support training and educational opportunities provided for our parish leaders, staff, and members to equip them to be able to recognize racism and bias, work to dismantle these pernicious evils wherever they may be present in our society.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING February 23, 2020 The Annual Vestry Meeting was held in the church auditorium following the joint 9:00 a.m. service. The Reverend Canon Stephen Fields chaired the meeting. 65 members were present.

1. Opening Prayer: Canon Stephen The meeting opened at 10:55 with a welcome and prayer Canon Stephen thanked Swan for all her work with the report. He said that the audited financial statements for the year ending December 31, 2019 were not yet completed and it was recommended that their reception be deferred until a later date .

2. Appointment of Vestry Clerk On a motion by Jean Glionna and seconded by Bari-Lynne Butters, Sharon McNelles was appointed as Vestry Clerk.

3. Agenda Motion by Glenville Simpson and seconded by Hillary Irving-Brown to approve Agenda. CARRIED. 4. Confirmation of Minutes 4.1.

Motion by Kim Gordon and seconded by Marg Shiner that the minutes be confirmed. No errors or omissions. CARRIED 4.2.

Motion by Miriam Irving and seconded Linda Robertson that the minutes from September 29.

2019 be confirmed. No errors or omissions. CARRIED 4.3.

Motion by Pat Burton and seconded by John Carrington that the minutes from October 20, 2019, be confirmed. No errors or omissions. CARRIED. 5. Presentation and Reception of Reports Pages 9 to 45.

5.1.

Motion by Pat Johnson and seconded by Malcolm Shiner. CARRIED. 5.2.

Dianne Rimmer highlighted the following in the Churchwardens’ report  50K in 50 Days Fund Raising Campaign. We received $61.120.34  Area and Synod Parish leadership workshop held on Saturday, April 6, 2019.  Standing in Solidarity with the Poor – pledged our commitment to stand in solidarity with the poor and join the rest of our church in calling on all levels of government to fulfill their responsibilities to all our citizens.  Mosaic and Out Of The Cold  Cemetery: Conversion to Land Titles system – lawyers advised that this matter is now completed.  CPR/AED and First Aid certification seminar was arranged by the Parish Nurse, Maureen McNeish with 21 parishioners participating.  HTC Green Team 5.3.

Ron Tolhurst advised the parish that we were having furnace problems which were expensive and this has impacted the maintenance budget. _ 2020 Vestry Report

Malcolm Shiner said that the Footlights Club was looking for more members to join. He was approaching the churches in the ministerial with a view to interest their parishioners in joining the club.

The motion to accept the reports was CARRIED.

6. Financial Report – Draft Copy 6.1.

Draft copies of the Financial Statements were circulated. Following a brief presentation, Edward Carter suggested that any questions relating to the statements should be sent to him.

6.2.

On a Motion by John Carrington and seconded by Kim Gordon, a decision was made to accept the draft statements, pending the completion of the audit and review by the wardens and finance committee.

6.3.

Appointment of Auditors The motion by the wardens that the accounting firm of Booth & Partners CPA Professional Corporation be appointed as the auditors of Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill and the Endowment Fund for the year 2020 was CARRIED. 7. Looking to the Future 7.1.

Budgets a) Operating Budget The motion by the wardens that Vestry approves the 2020 Operating Budget $522,950 (expenses) and $519,200 (revenue) as recommended by the Wardens for our ministry was CARRIED. b) Capital Budget The motion by the wardens that Vestry approves the 2020 capital budget ($35,000) planned expenditure of the items identified and presented by the Wardens and Chair of the Property Committee was CARRIED 7.2.

Green Kitchen Policy Stephen Law proposed and Miriam Irving seconded the motion that vestry adopt the Green Kitchen Policy as proposed by the wardens. The following best practices to be observed were outlined. a) When planning an event, where food and beverages will be served, please consider all aspects of the event during the planning stage, including clean up to make sure there are enough volunteers. b) Reduce food waste where possible, compost what cannot be consumed, and avoid putting anything into the garbage. c) No single use plastic items or non-compostable products should be used. d) Use the dishes, cutlery and mugs / cups that can be washed and reused as much as possible. e) Outside groups or individuals wishing to use disposable items must be compostable which must be acquired at their own expense. Holy Trinity Church will not pay for disposable items as there is a full suite of serving items in the kitchen and a commercial grade dishwasher available for use. f) In cases where members volunteer to organize fundraising events for the benefit of the church and choose to use compostable items, the cost of these items shall be deducted from the proceeds of the event. When these events are social or liturgical in nature, the organizers and the wardens shall together determine how the compostable items will be financed. _ 2020 Vestry Report

It was suggested that proper signage for bins should be displayed and that outside groups be advised of these practices The motion was CARRIED. 7.3.

Social Justice Motion: Taking Action on Climate Change a) John Carrington proposed and Pat Johnson seconded b) Recognizing that there is a global climate emergency. We acknowledge that all sectors of society, including governments, businesses, churches and other non-profit organizations, and private individuals, have an obligation to do what they can to recognize and minimize their contribution to climate change c) Noting that the Synod of our Diocese at its 159 th Regular Session Synod voted to encourage several actions in response to the global emergency and d) Committing our parish to continue our Green Initiative started in 2016 Nancy Cutler provided background to the motion and Stephen Law provided an update on the local initiative and further insight into the issue. Nancy read a draft letter which Canon Stephen said would be sent to the Bishop.

The motion was CARRIED.

7.4.

Emergency Shelter  Hillary Irving-Brown and Miriam Irving made a presentation to Vestry, reviewing the Emergency Shelter sponsored by Holy Trinity from November 29, 2019-January 17, 2020  The shelter was for overnight guests only and provided a friendly safe environment for our guests. They were provided with given dinner, place to sleep, breakfast, a bag lunch and a TTC token or York Region transit ticket on their departure in the morning.  The Shelter averaged 25 guests each week. In total we provided 198 shelter beds to 65 unique individuals.  Pickup was from St. George’s Anglican Church Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. Guests were picked up from Holy Trinity Saturday morning 7:30 and taken to the Finch subway station.

There were no additional services offered such as clothing and medical care  Most nights, the shelter accepted overflow individuals from other York Region Shelters  The shelter ran smoothly with only minor incidents which were handled by security and did not require input from any other individuals  There were 46 volunteers and 6 corporate Sponsors for our shelter.  4 individuals donated cash and 17 donated food. A parishioner and church neighbour each donated a complete meal  The shelter has started helping raise HTC profile in the community, with a mention in an article in the Liberal, within the Mosaic Community and with sponsors.  Since we are running a shelter from the church, a grant from United Way has been received to purchase a new refrigerator and tables.

Jean Glionna congratulated Hillary and Miriam and their team for all the work they have done.

Be it resolved that this vestry commend the organizing team on the successful execution of the first emergency shelter hosted by our church in collaboration with MOSAIC - Out of the Cold.

Be it resolved that this vestry place on record its appreciation for the work of Hilary IrvingBrown, Miriam Brown, Rebecca Jones, the sporting team and volunteers that worked to ensure this success.

Be it further resolved that this Vestry approve the future use of our facilities for the emergency shelter. CARRIED 7.5.

190th Anniversary Update  Malcolm Shiner gave an update on the plans for the 190th anniversary celebration and highlighted the following dates  May 3 – Bishop Linda Nicholls  June 14 – Bar-B-Q – Bishop Andrew Asbil  Music Night – date to be decided  November 1 – Bishop Peter Fenty  Plans were also being made for an Anniversary Luncheon (date to be determined)

Minutes of The Endowment Fund & Margaret Harding Memorial Garden Fund Special Vestry Meeting Tuesday, October 13, 2019 8:00 p.m. (via Zoom) Attendance: 20 members Members of Parish per zoom sign in.

Canon Stephen opened the meeting with a prayer.

1. Approval of Special Vestry Meeting Agenda Moved by Nancy Cutler and seconded by Malcolm Shiner the agenda as presented be approved, all present in favour – carried.

2. Appointment of the Vestry Clerk Moved by Marlee Tolhurst and seconded by Marg Shiner that Brian Pound be appointed as Vestry Clerk. All present in favour – carried.

3. Treasurers Report Susan Preston presented the Treasurer’s Report for both funds as follows: a. Margaret Harding Memorial Garden Fund Revenue for the year ending June 30, 2020 totaled $749.00. Expenses for bank charges and audit fees totaled $116.00 resulting in a net income of $635.00. The amount available for distribution is $572.00 (90% of net income). b. Holy Trinity Endowment Fund Revenue for the year ending June 30, 2020 totaled $16,037.00. Expenses for bank charges and audit fees totaled $1,354.00 resulting in a net income of $14,683.00. Since there was a bequest to the fund during the year the amount available for distribution is $14,683.00 (100% of net income).

Susan Preston provided a brief explanation that revenues were lower this year mainly due to lower returns on invested funds.

4. Appointment of Auditor for 2020/2021 Moved by Susan Preston, seconded by Ron Tolhurst that the Auditor accepted by Holy Trinity Church annual vestry meeting to be held February 23, 2021 be appointed as Auditor for the Margaret Harding Memorial Garden Fund and the Endowment Fund. All present in favour – carried.

5. Recommendations for Margaret Harding Memorial Garden Fund Disbursements Marlee Tolhurst presented a motion to approve the disbursement amount of $572.00 to the Garden Committee, seconded by Enid Corbett, all present in favour – carried.

“Hi, Stephen and Rebecca, among the grace notes and points of light in the pandemic has been your modelling of grace under pressure and the meaning of perseverance. Your efforts to welcome us all into the Zoom chapel every week give new meaning to the phrase "above and beyond". This morning, you demonstrated that grace under pressure as we struggled with the unknown global technical issue that was out of your control. What a privilege it was to witness your calm response and ability to pivot so quickly to a new time. Stephen, I cannot thank you enough for extending the privilege of participating in the service by reading. Rebecca, your patient coaching made all the difference: it was very exciting to fully participate by video and voice from the I-Pad (although the sound issue made me doubt my technical abilities after I was so sure I had figured it out!)” (Carolyn Kennedy) What a year! Those of my generation have not seen life like this before. Those who are older can speak, at length, about their experiences of World War II or the Great Depression. As a people of faith, we continue to live these days as we “pray without ceasing” and do what is required of us to ensure our health and safety and that of others.

Carolyn’s email (quoted above) expresses her appreciation for our efforts on one Sunday early in the lockdown when it was made more difficult by a global technical failure on the ZOOM platform. Let me join her and express my gratitude to Rebecca Jones for making it possible for us to assemble every week for worship on our ZOOM platform. Not only has she worked to improve the quality of our ZOOM experience, she also supported John Carrington in his work with the Tuesday Bible Study and many other members who were new to ZOOM. Though worship by ZOOM was new to many in our parish, it was not unfamiliar to those who meet for our viDEoVOTIONS in the morning. We were using this platform for almost three years.

Now we have gone beyond ZOOM. Through Rebecca’s efforts, we have our own YouTube channel and are now streaming live via this medium.

We missed the boat when we did not proceed with the idea to upgrade our audio-visual capabilities in the church a few years ago.

Perhaps, the time is right for us to revisit this idea. This will be a matter of conversation in the future.

Notwithstanding the challenges posed by COVID-19, our parish, through the efforts of many committed members, was able to be a faithful presence in our community. The following represents some highlights of our ministry.

Life continued at Holy Trinity, Thornhill, but not in the same way. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its challenges, caused us to do much rethinking and re-imagining. If we are paying attention, we will realize that our lives have been changed forever. Both old and young have been forced to see our life and ministry differently.

FROM 190 TO 200 Our 190th anniversary celebration did not go as Malcolm Shiner and his committed team of BariLynne Butters, Bobbie Creber, Gloria Downey, Brian Pound, Marlee & Ron Tolhurst, Joan & Bill Virtue, and the entire parish had anticipated.

Everything was falling into place. We had imagined that this celebration would form the launching pad for the journey to our bicentennial

Many of our members have not entered our sanctuary since March 2020. We were afforded the opportunity to worship for less than six months as a gathered community. Let us remember the words of Stephen, the first martyr of our faith. “The Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands”. (Acts 7:48).

in 2030. Then life changed, not only for us but for the entire planet. COVID-19 interrupted our lives! We had to recalibrate.



Two of the planned events for the anniversary did go ahead, Bishops’ Sundays and the planting of 190 flags on our front lawn, celebrating Canada and HTC. In addition, Linda Robertson jumped into the vacuum and shared weekly features “From Our Archives”. We are all appreciative of her contribution.

Before COVID-19 appeared on the horizon, our wardens were discussing how we could position the parish to celebrate our 200th anniversary.

They have embarked on a journey to 2030 which is not too far away by way of a “REJUVENATION PROJECT”. We are not sure who among us can say with 100% certainty that “I will be here” for those celebrations when they come. Our hope is that we are going to give 100%, as we work, in the meantime, to move our community to that point in our parish’s life and mission.



Develop short term educational opportunities to deepen our common understanding of our faith, enhance our engagement with scripture, and deepen our experience of prayer, and Review the Christian Formation and Education program and recommend ways in which the parish can be more effective in this particular ministry.

The “Rejuvenation Project”, mentioned earlier, and the report received regarding that project, changed the focus of the plan for Bro. Reginald, even though there is a nexus. His training and experience make him ideally suited to shepherd our response to the report and the work we will undertake. In that regard, I am thankful to the steering committee and reference group who have begun to work with him on this critical task.

We pray the power and presence of our Loving, Life-giving and Liberating God upon and among them.

Early in the spring an interview panel of Edward Carter, Delores Thomas, Jane Winstanley, and I recommended Yvonne Mortillaro to be our next parish nurse. Though the offer of employment was accepted then, the lockdown forced us to postpone the start of her ministry until November.

A metaphor for, and witness to, this journey is the story of young Lucy Staples and Ethan Silver.

They made the mature, independent decision that they wanted to be baptized. Their baptisms were to be administered at Easter but the lockdown prevented the celebration then. On two separate Saturdays in November, their parents, sponsors, and families shared in that special moment in their lives. It would have been an even greater joy if the whole community was present to witness these moments.

She quickly immersed herself in our staff and pastoral team and has begun to engage our community.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND FORMATION In 2012, we adopted the phrase “something good is happening here!” That is not an empty set of words. It resonates with those who have taken the opportunities made available to grow deeper in faith and broader in the knowledge of that faith. Over the past year, we have seen the growth of one group and the birth of another.

PASTORAL STAFF Just as we welcomed Lucy and Ethan to the Christian family, the wardens and I were pleased to welcome Bro. Reginald Crenshaw, OHC, ODT., and Yvonne Mortillaro, RN., to our ministry team.

Bro Reginald was invited to take a leading role in facilitating, equipping, and supporting our parish community as we seek to recommit ourselves to the joyful proclamation of the Gospel more deliberately and effectively. His task, originally, was to, inter alia,

coming in from beyond our parish boundaries and parish membership. We thank God for John and we thank John for this gift to us.

MiddayMoments: Our 10am Wednesday Eucharist was a casualty of COVID-19 in the middle of March. April saw the start of MiddayMoments, a time for noonday prayer and conversation. Every week from MondayThursday, an average of 6-8 persons have been joining these sessions.

Order of the Diocese of Toronto: How pleased I was to announce that, following our nominations, Malcolm Shiner and John Carrington were appointed with thirty-three other members by Bishop Andrew Asbil to the Order of the Diocese of Toronto!

VIDEOVOTIONS, started in Lent of 2018, continue

to be another time for another 7-8 persons who meet at 8:00am on Monday to Thursday, with coffee, water, fruit, or cereal, for music, conversation and prayer.

Praying the Headlines: This circle of another 6-8 faithful members, meets about nine times a year on a Sunday afternoon, to reflect on the issues of social concerns and hold them in prayer.

Among them is a faithful brother from Boston.

These four opportunities are times for deep questions and conversations about faith, advocacy, and the scriptures. Yet they are not intimidating, for participants have formed wonderful communities of trust and support.

CHURCH SCHOOL AND YOUTH Judith Sinclair, the Church School Coordinator, has been using the ZOOM platform in her online program with those children of church school age, with support and participation of their parents.

Hazel Ogilvie has joined me in facilitating a “Youth Half-Hour” conversation with youth in our parish on Sunday afternoon. This has been a very rewarding experience, certainly for me, as we engage the ideas and energy of our youth.

Two of them join us from Boston.

THE WIDER CHURCH AND COMMUNITY Bishop’s Fenty’s Retirement: Our Area Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Peter Fenty, retired on November 30, 2020. We join the rest of the church in thanking him for his years of diaconal, priestly and episcopal ministry and we wish him every blessing in the years ahead. When he came to us

The purpose of the Order is to recognize and honour those members of the laity in the Diocese who have given outstanding service over a significant period of time in their volunteer ministry. These two saints of the church are deserving of such an honour. We tender our heartiest congratulations!

Thornhill Ministerial Association: The 52nd edition of the Ecumenical Lenten Series sponsored by The Thornhill Ministerial Association cut short due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The theme was “Finding Our Way in a Broken World”. We were only able to have two of the five services planned. The themes and preachers for the series were as follows:  Finding our Way in a World Broken by Sin: The Rev. Paul Gibbon  Finding our Way in a World Broken by Violence: The Rev. Canon Dr. Stephen Fields  Finding our Way in a World Broken by Division: Pastor Dennis Jones  Finding our Way in a World Broken by Greed: The Rev. We were saddened to learn of the sudden death of our colleague, The Rev. Tom Vais of the Thornhill Presbyterian Church. He was fully committed to, and invested in, the work of our Ministerial. We continue to miss him. May he rest in peace.

June 4. Speakers were invited to share how they were feeling and some of their thoughts on the crisis in the USA and work that we may be thinking about doing or are doing in the area or anti-racism and other forms of exclusion.

The main presenters were Bishops Andrew Asbil and Peter Fenty, The Rev. Canon Drs. Sandye A Wilson and Lynn A Collins of the USA, Imam AbdurRashid Taylor and Imam Ryan Rasheed Carter, The Rev. Jacqueline Daley, a priest of our diocese, and Rebecca Jones of our parish.

Other participants included The Rev. Stephen Kern (St. Philip’s Church, Unionville), The Rev. Canon Dr. Kortright Davis (Howard University School of Divinity), Robin Pacific (Artist & Author, Parishioner of Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill), The Rev. Greg Fiennes-Clinton (St. George’s Church, Newcastle), Darnell Chambers (Theological Student), June Dyer (Retired – Teacher, Christian Educator, Past President of Women’s Interchurch Council of Canada & Diocesan Anglican Church Women), The Rev. Dr. Michael Clarke, (Principal of Codrington College, Barbados), and Lucy Fields (School Administrator and Parishioner of Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill) There were about 75 unique connections to the sessions. We received positive responses to the experiences and enquiries about ongoing conversations and future action. Several members of our parish expressed an interest in doing more in the work of education of racism and dismantling the sin that it is.

Area and Diocesan Engagement: I continued to be one of the two Liturgical Officers assisting our Area Bishop to plan ordinations and services celebrating new ministries in the Area and to serve as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the York Rectory Commission.

The Commissioners apportion the surplus income derived from the endowment of the Rectory of St. James, in the City of Toronto and distribute income derived from the endowments of the Rectory of Etobicoke among the parishes within the Etobicoke Glebe, an area in the Diocese of Toronto.

The Episcopal Leadership Working Group: I was invited by the Bishop Asbil to be a member of a recently appointed Episcopal Leadership Working Group. The 11-member group was established by Diocesan Bishop for the purpose of examining and reporting to him on alternative models for the exercise of episcopal leadership, oversight and pastoral ministry within the Diocese.

The Working Group is responsible for submitting a final written report on its findings to the Bishop on or before Ash Wednesday 2021. Our responsibilities will terminate upon the submission of our final report, but we may be called upon to participate in a process of Diocesan consultations concerning the findings of our group following the submission of the final report.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR HTC? We will continue to do what we have begun. The “Rejuvenation Project” is about the future of our Parish. The report “Congregational Health Assessment” produced by Credence & Co ends with these words. “HTC is at a critical juncture in its life story, in a unique position and with a tremendous opportunity to offer leadership to the wider community in terms of managing conflict and diversity. Seizing the current moment can allow HTC to build on its strengths, refocus on its future, and open itself to renewed vibrancy. It is our hope and prayer that over time, this season will be remembered as a time that generated a re-grounding of the congregation in its sense of purpose and calling”.

I could not end this report without acknowledging the contribution of Dirk Drieberg to the Corporation and the wider parish family.

Dirk, a long-standing member of our church, had to relinquish his role as warden for professional reasons. That notwithstanding, having sought the opinion of the Diocesan Chancellor, he was retained as a consultant to the wardens, allowing them to draw on his broad experience and wise counsel. Without any decision making authority, he continues to assist them with the reimagination and rejuvenation project, in the special assignments given to him, and to provide any other support and advice that will benefit our shared ministry. On my own behalf and that of the parish, Dirk, please accept our thanks.

Special thanks are tendered to our friend, Fr. Brian Youngward, who came to us as a guest preacher during March Break. Much appreciation is reserved for Bro. Reginald who has been a tremendous support as he shares with me in this work. He brings immense experience, skills and knowledge to our team.

Coupled with his faith in God and commitment to his vocation, he has proven to be an incredible asset to Holy Trinity, Thornhill.

I truly appreciate, and am thankful for all who minister in our parish, and for the love and support of those parishioners who continue to affirm the ministry that, by God’s grace, I seek to offer.

I am especially thankful for the support given by Lucy, my wife and the rest of my family. She continues to have her hands full as an administrator of a school during this time of pandemic, yet she provides the kind of support and encouragement one needs in this work.

In closing, I commend Bishop Andrew Asbil’s words to the diocese at Easter time. “Now is the time to let loose with bold proclamations of the Easter message, using both old tools and new tools, building community, acting with compassion, preaching life”. These words of encouragement and the message of transformation which is proclaimed in the Easter story continue to drive us forward.

Let us continue to recognise that “something good is happening here!” This is our spiritual home. For some it is the only family they have.

Let us, in the words of Paul “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ”. (Galatians 6:2). We know that that law is that we are called to “love one another as Christ loves us”. (see John 13:34)

VESTRY REPORT – CHURCHWARDENS

We the Wardens are pleased to present our Vestry Report 2020 as follows:

$506,540. It is not clear whether any of the COVID-19 relief funds will continue into 2021.

Outreach: Notwithstanding the revenue challenges but also in light of the Jubilee and the CEWS, we decided to use the budgeted amount of $10,000 for Outreach this year. The committee met and made their recommendations on November 30, which were quickly approved and the monies dispersed.

ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS Wardens for 2020: At Vestry, Dirk Drieberg was appointed to the office of Rector’s Warden, Edward Carter and Nancy Cutler were elected People’s Warden and Deputy Warden respectively. As a result of a change in Dirk’s personal situation, Nancy Cutler was appointed Rector’s Warden and Dirk has been appointed as a consultant to the corporation

PERSONNEL Lay Pastor: We were pleased to appoint Bro. Reginald Crenshaw as the Interim Pastor at the beginning of March.

Cassandra Culpepper, a corporate secretary, was reappointed to serve as secretary to the corporation.

FINANCES Diocesan Jubilee: In light of the financial challenges posed by the impact of COVID-19, our Diocese announced a Jubilee to help parishes with their finances for the months of April to June. In these three months, parishes were not be required to pay their monthly allotment to the Diocese or cover the cost of clergy remuneration.

CEWS: We also benefited from the COVID 19 Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) offered by the Federal Government.

Thornhill Nursey School & Kindergarten & the Korean Church: With the closure of the nursery school, as a result of COVID-19, we discounted the license fees paid by the nursery by 50% for the months of April to June. The nursery expressed their appreciation of the discount granted. We have also granted a discount to our Korean brothers and sisters who use our church on Sunday afternoons.

The financial statements for the period ending December 31, 2020 was reviewed. The income totaled $539,652 compared to the budget of $478,117. The expenses $474,158 compared to

Parish Nurse: We were pleased to welcome Yvonne Mortillaro as our new Parish Nurse. She commenced her work on November 2, 2020 and has been active in reaching out to parishioners since then.

Parish Staff: Notwithstanding the challenges we anticipated with the possible impact on revenue due to COVID-19 lockdowns, we made the decision not to lay off any of our parish staff. We wanted to commend, in particular, Swan Li and Jesús Cruz Arángo for all their hard work and dedication during these rapidly changing times.

REJUVENATION PLAN: Credence & Co.: In May 2020, we reached out to Credence, seeking their support with a process to address some concerns expressed by seven members of the congregation and to initiate a wider process of rejuvenation for Holy Trinity.

During the summer, a parish survey was conducted to which 129 of you responded, followed by 30 personal interviews with the Credence consultant. The Credence analysis of that information was presented to the congregation on October 27, 2020.

The Plan: We committed to have an implementation plan ready for early December and it was presented to Bishop Asbil on _

December 1, and the congregation on December 13. Just before Christmas, a Reference Group of respected parishioners was announced in an email blast.

thank Pat & Ron, Peter Patterson, Swan Li & Jesus Cruz Arango and many others for their hard work to make all this possible.

Communication: Throughout the year, the wardens have communicated to the Parish through email blasts; briefly, at the end of many of the church services and, in several cases, through a separate ZOOM event. It is consistent with our commitment to actively keep parishioners informed on church activities.

Coronavirus Pandemic: On March 15, our building was closed and, though our ministry continues, our worship experiences were by way of ZOOM. We commend Canon Stephen and Rebecca Jones for making it possible for the parish to engage worship in this way.

As the York Region COVID-19 numbers began to fall during the summer, preparations began for physically returning to the church for our services. Two committees were struck – one for the physical plan (chair – Ron Tolhurst) and the other for Liturgy (chair – Pat Johnson). Cleaning routines were established, masks & sanitizers made available, pews were marked off and prayer-books/bibles packed in boxes, Altar Guild members and Sidespeople adjusted their routines. On September 13, services resumed (8:00 am in the church and 10:00 am in the auditorium). Then on November 15, thanks to a new handheld sanitizer both services were in the church – for a short while. We had our last service in the church on December 13 – the numbers in York Region were just too high. We

190th Anniversary The 190th Committee (chair Malcom Shiner) is to be commended for their ability to adjust their plans as a result of COVID-19. They arranged for celebrating Canada Day with a front lawn covered with small Canadian flags and the visits of the Primate (Linda Nichols), the Diocesan Bishop (Andrew Asbil), the regional Bishop (Peter Fenty) and Bishop Kevin Robertson went ahead as planned either on-line or in person.

Jane Winstanley wrote a prayer for the anniversary which we used throughout the year.

It was noted that we will make up for 2020 during our 200th.

VESTRY REPORT - ADVISORY BOARD

2020

The Advisory Board continued to support the Incumbent and Wardens during another year of ministry, a year characterized by the global pandemic and meetings on Zoom. The Board is comprised of a cross section of parishioners as well as representatives of the Anglican Church Women. We welcomed Edmund Baumann, Cathy Walker-Pilgrim, Pat Merchant and Bro. Reginald Crenshaw to the Board. Robin Pacific was elected to serve as Chair.

At the first meeting after every Vestry, the entire Board is provided with the necessary materials, Board constitution and by-laws and the relevant diocesan canons to support the decisions of the Board. They are reminded that they should advise of any concerns that may arise within the congregation.

Bishop's Fenty’s Retirement We welcomed Area Bishop, The Rt. Rev Peter Fenty's final visit and sermon on November 1, 2020 with our congregation, and thanked him for his many years of service with Holy Trinity.

Bishop Fenty was presented with a hand knitted prayer shawl.

Facilitation and leadership of Brother Reginald Brother Reg led us through several discussions and check-ins. We are grateful for his wise leadership and compassionate service. With his direction we had collective soul searching about our own faith, the future of the parish, and our ongoing individual and collective challenges of the pandemic.

190 ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE

The committee met three times, in December 2019 and in January & February 2020 to plan for a number of celebrations to commemorate our 190th year.

Summer and Fall. As well, we managed to plant 190 flags in the front lawn on July first.

Linda Robertson of the Archives Committee stepped into the breach and provided a steady flow through the Summer and Fall of weekly articles of interesting historical happenings at Holy Trinity. This was a great help in causing us to reflect back over the last “190 years of Ministry - Making a Difference”.

Unfortunately, Covid 19 appeared and we were forced to shelve nearly all our plans. However, we did manage to enjoy the presence, (virtually) of our Primate Linda Nicholls, and Bishops Asbil, Fenty, and Robertson at services over the

However, a number of participants passed away or moved away that cancelled out the gain.

Weekly (boxed) Envelopes We continued reducing our order for the weekly boxed envelope givings making the total of 70 for the year 2020.

By the end of 2020, there were: 57 active accounts of weekly boxed envelopes, as opposed to 64 in 2019  90 members were in this program  Three monthly contributors, and  The remaining accounts were people who contribute occasionally and/or for special celebration including memorial/altar flowers.

VESTRY REPORT – CEMETERY

2020

2020 was a quiet year for the Holy Trinity Cemetery due to Covid 19.

There were two interments of cremated remains. One marker and one monument were installed. The interment rights to a single lot were sold to a Parishioner. There are eight interments of cremated remains waiting for the relaxation of Covid 19 restrictions.

We continue to sell interment rights for the few remaining lots, as well as the single cremation, double cremation and the Memory Garden lots.

Our bi-monthly meetings were held by Zoom this year. We also received and answered many requests from people researching information about their ancestors. Many Covid 19 updates from the BAO have been received since March, each time the restrictions changed. We also received additional directives from the Diocese.

We are grateful to the Wardens’ and Maintenance Committee for helping us cover our grass cutting costs. The Endowment Fund has also been very generous in helping us cover our other expenses.

During the year, the Cemetery Committee has been diligent in managing and caring for our historic cemetery. Each month from May to October, a member of the committee has made a weekly visit to the cemetery to collect litter and other debris. Our usual April cleanup was different this year, as we could not meet as a group. Several workers visited the cemetery at their convenience to clean up the debris that had accumulated during the winter (42 yard-waste bags). For the September cleanup day, workers met as usual with social distancing (24 yardwaste bags).

A former parishioner has moved and no longer needs the interment rights for a double (or two singles) plot purchased several years ago. The rights can only be sold to Parishioners. If anyone is interested in the rights for a single or double plot please contact Enid Corbett who will facilitate this transfer of interment rights.

A big thank you is extended to the Cemetery Committee who have diligently carried out their mandate during the past year. We welcome new members who are interested in task of keeping our historic cemetery beautiful and safe.

During the spring cleanup, it was discovered that two portions of the wooden fence on the north side had fallen down. The condominium repaired the fence during the summer.

VESTRY REPORT – LAY PASTOR OF DISCIPLESHIP

2020

“He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the Acceptable Year of the Lord.”

Jesus, Luke 4: 18-19 “But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”

Jeremiah 29:7 I was often asked in the beginning of my time here by people in this diocese (clergy mostly) to describe my experience of the people of Holy Trinity. Because I was new I said, I thought this was an interesting congregation, with issues of course, but in my limited experience a warm congregation. But as time went on and I began to know some of you, and participate in Advisory Board meetings etc., I’ve come to see you more deeply. That is, that you are a people committed to enabling people to see God fully in your neighbour, to empower both yourselves and your neighbours to seek a life that is both affirming and meaningful. You do that for each other and for others in the community. Thornhill is that part of the GTA where God has sent you to pray and work on behalf of the people here and, in doing that prayer and work you find yourselves, discover the significance of Christ, your mutual welfare and ultimately your salvation.

Therefore, I want to thank you all for the welcome you have extended to me as your Lay Pastor. Thank you for being a community of faithful women and men across generations and ages who continue to struggle with the meaning and relevance of Christian life.

do we do Gospel in this community? How do we become the eyes, ears, and feet of God in our time and place. Together prayer and learning show us the way to accomplish this with honesty, grace and faith.

My ministry has been primarily one of preaching.

I love preaching. It becomes the forum (particularly because of the pandemic) for me to engage you in this learning and prayer that I’ve mentioned earlier. Secondly, as a member of the Steering Committee of the Rejuvenation Project I participate as a member of the team to plan, dream and talk about not only about our future but to begin to create that future in the present moment and move forward.

A week ago I designed and conducted a Parish pre-lenten retreat. I hope in the future to engage in this ministry in the parish on a more regular basis.

Let me end with a small piece from the Gospel of John on the Sacrament of Service.

“After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his cloak back on and reclined at table once more.

He said to them. Do you understand what I just did for you? You address me as “teacher and Lord, and fittingly enough for that is what I am.

But if I washed your feet,-I who am Teacher and Lord-then you must wash each other’s feet.

What I just did was to give you an example: as I have done, so you must do, I solemnly assure you, no slave is greater than his master; no messenger outranks the one who sent him. Once you know all these things, blest will you be if you put them into practice.” John 13: 12-17.

VESTRY REPORT - DIRECTOR OF MUSIC As we arrive at the end of this challenging year 2020, I give thanks to God for His unfailing love even in the midst of trials and difficulties.

Although we still need to cope with the sad reality and miss many things, we have found new ways to meet one another and continue the music ministry.

I sincerely appreciate the commitment and efforts of our choristers. For the carol service, we included a few clips from the previous years’ cantata services.

A brief report for the pre-pandemic period before mid-March includes recommissioning of new senior choir members as well as existing choristers on January 12th and Thornhill Ministerial Lenten Series service on March 1st, when we hosted an evensong service and the choir participated.

Since no choral or congregational singing is allowed during worship service as per the diocese guidelines, we have carried on with our choir on Zoom and prerecorded music.

Regrettably, I haven’t seen many of the choir members since March, but several members who have access to technologies have been joining the Zoom meetings (attendees varying from 4 to11) and recordings.

In the fall, several members were able to gather together with masks on to record singing hymns and songs. This prerecorded music was played at our Zoom services (September 20, October 4, 18 and 25). Also, choir members who would never thought of daunting tasks of recording, downloading files and sending videos participated in our virtual choir, that enriched our Sunday services with some music including 190 anniversary hymn (June 7th and 14th and

In the early part of 2020, the junior choir joined the senior choir to sing the anthem at two Sunday services (February 16 & March 8) and presented a 20-minute mini concert at Thornhill United Church for the Out of the Cold shelter program on Friday March 6. Due to the pandemic, the junior choir rehearsals have been suspended since mid-March. However, we were delighted to watch and listen to our young talents at our virtual Carol Service to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus. I again extend many thanks to youth and their parents for the efforts and supports.

Many joyful celebrations and occasions have been cancelled, but I managed to play for two weddings (March 14 & October 17) and have been recording organ or piano music for our Sunday services since May. Now that we are 10 months into the virtual meetings and Zoom services, I feel grateful for new opportunities and support throughout this challenging year. I pray and hope that the time comes soon when it is safe to gather, rehearse and sing together in person.

VESTRY REPORT - CHURCH SCHOOL CO-ORDINATOR

The year 2020 began as usual, with the classes coming back to church school after Christmas Break, to attend classes with that eagerness children have after a holiday. The children were having Bible lessons on the beginning of Jesus' Ministry. February focused on God's love for us.

As usual, the Youth were meeting in a separate area with Hazel Ogilvie. They were enjoying Bible stories from the Old Testament which were very unusual, and they were beginning to enthusiastically dramatize these for presentation.

Then Covid 19 hit! All of a sudden we went into lock-down in March, with children and parents having to continue schooling at home. Thank God for ZOOM. We began to get together through Zoom for our lessons. I joined the Committee for Safe Reopening of our church after the summer break. I was hoping that things might get back to normal in the fall.

service. Youth who came to church were met by Hazel for Youth Talk. As well, they could zoom with other youth for a half hour with Canon Stephen on Sundays. One of our Youth, Lucy Staples, was baptised in November in our church.

Church School resorted again to classes on Zoom.

We were following the Sunday Gospels for the most part. It seemed strange not to be working on a Christmas Pageant through the late fall. This was deemed unsafe. However, with the help of technology and our Director of Music, Rachel Yoon, the youth and a few Church School children managed to share their talents of instrumental music, singing and reading of Bible passages to put a Christmas Eve video in place, A Service of Lessons and Carols. As my husband was in the hospital the week of Christmas, I found great joy and comfort in watching our youth and children online to help us celebrate this holy time of year. I am very grateful of their service and talents. God bless our Children.

VESTRY REPORT – PARISH NURSE

I took the position of Parish Nurse at HTC on November 2, 2020 during the time of Covid-19 isolation/lockdown which established an unusual and challenging way to perform nursing duties and meet our parishioners since there were no home visits permitted. The phone, email and Zoom became the form of contact and remains in place at this present time of this communication.

We thank Angella Smith for her time and the great care she put in looking of the cards ministry. In the period of 12-month a total of 163 cards were mailed to members. 42 Easter greetings, 30 Thanksgiving cards, 53 Christmas wishes, and 38 cards of get-well, sympathy, and other life challenges and celebrations.

I attended a Sunday service where introduction to the congregation was made by Canon Stephen via Zoom and also was present for the Zoom Healing and Remembrance service.

I enjoy immensely phone conversations and meeting our parishioners over the phone especially the senior population who like, not only to address their present situation, but also to share their wisdom and many life experiences. To date approximately 150 phone contacts have been made with several call backs to certain individuals who require assistance and follow up.

Healing and Wellness Committee remains a work in progress. Nancy Cutler, Canon Stephen and I are the present members hopefully some others will choose to join us at a later date when things return to normal function within our community.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is managed by Cathy Pearson who is doing a super job, the shawls are beautiful the colors uplifting. At Christmas prayers shawls were donated to three residents at Elginwood Longterm Care Nursing Home.

Residents and family were delighted.

Many thanks to Cathy and to all the volunteers who dedicate their time in service to this ministry.

In February the 14-year old mid efficiency furnaces in the church shutdown due to broken circulating fans. It was decided to replace the ageing units rather than spend significant money on repairs. New high efficiency furnace and AC units (13 SEER) were installed.

The internet connection in the church was also improved.

With the advent of Covid-19 protocols and restrictions in the Spring it was necessary to replace dry broom cleaning with wet cleaning. A new floor scrubber using 0.1% bleach solution was purchased to speed up the floor cleaning.

Our custodian, Jesús, purchased masks, hand sanitizer, and surface cleaning equipment for all to use.

The south entrance doors to the building were constantly peeling so they were stripped and repainted by a contractor.

In the Spring the Property Committee helped the Garden Committee prepare the flower beds with mulch.

Peter Paterson with some help from the Property Committee packed up all the books in the church and stored them under the pews.

The pew seating was marked and roped to ensure physical distance. Directional arrows were put on the floor for traffic flow.

The auditorium, using the overhead screen, was set up for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service with appropriate physical distance. Our church IT contractor ran cable from the office to the Auditorium for Zoom broadcasting. A wireless clip-on microphone was moved from the church to the Auditorium to augment the two existing hand held units and the wired unit.

In the Fall when the 10:00 am service moved back to the sanctuary it was necessary to sanitize the Nave between 8:00 and 10:00 services. An

In the Fall we helped remove the weeds and plant Swan’s lilies along the north property line.

As required by the Diocese the 10-year building inspection was completed in August by CWD Engineering. No major structural problems were found. Some immediate shingle repair over the Hall and elevator was required. Full shingle replacement on the three roof sections (Church, Hall, Auditorium) was noted, the first being the main church roof.

VESTRY REPORT - GARDEN COMMITTEE We on the Garden Committee worked to maintain the beauty of the property at HTC. As well the usual planting of annuals and regular weeding, two dead cedars on the church front garden were removed and new shrubs will replace them in the Spring 2021. The area along the north parking lot fence was dug up, soil augmented and Day Lilies planted.

2020 Darryl Thompson, who guided us as chair of our committee, has retired from our group and we wish to thank him and Gail for all their hard work and dedication for more than a decade.

VESTRY REPORT – LITURGY & WORSHIP

We began 2020, expecting to have a “normal year”, as far as worship is concerned. The impact of the Coronavirus making its way across the globe, was felt in our country, resulting in the lockdown of our church building. From the middle of Lent to the middle of September, we worshipped virtually. The reopening was shortlived. Following the second wave of the virus, “in person” worship was restricted just before Christmas.

generally being on duty for 10-12 weeks a year, in two week intervals. They also now rotate the chair of these meetings, team by team, on a twoyear rotation cycle and make the switch in the month of September. Team Five is the current Chair.

As part of their ministry, the Guild meets as a group at least four times a year. Following the December (Christmas) and June meetings, we share our fellowship while enjoying wine and food. We also gather on the Saturday prior to Palm Sunday to make palm crosses.

The amazing work of Rebecca Jones enabled us to engage in worship. With her passion and effervescent enthusiasm, technological savvy, we embraced ZOOM technology. Our parish is profoundly grateful for her ministry.

Though limited to less than six months of “in person” worship, our liturgical team of devoted Sidespersons and Greeters, members of the Altar and Flower Guilds, the Servers and Choir, the Lay Assistants, Lectors, Intercessors, and Communion Ministers, still gave of themselves to our ministry when the opportunity arose. We continue to be grateful for their faithful witness and commitment.

LITURGICAL TEAM Sidespeople and Greeters “Thank you!” to all Welcome Team members who assisted with, and contributed to, the Sunday morning services. Your ministry is much appreciated. Persons who wish more information about the ministry of the Welcome Team may speak to Peter Paterson. (Peter Paterson) Altar Guild There are 36 members serving on the Altar Guild who are committed to keeping the Sanctuary beautiful and functioning for all services. The Guild is comprised of five teams of about 4-5 members each and they rotate their duty times,

The Guild prepares the Sanctuary, Chancel and Chapel for all liturgical celebrations including regular worship services, weddings, funerals, baptisms and special services including but not limited to Christmas and those of Holy Week.

This includes setting the Altars; polishing, dusting, vacuuming, and overseeing repairs of vessels as well as maintaining a supply of wafers, candles and wine. They also maintain the fine linens, ensuring they are properly laundered and ironed. In addition to our regular duties, the Guild has assisted Canon Stephen in previous years with a Seder service and meal as part of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy.

As with every other group in Holy Trinity, the Altar Guild has had to modify its routine, working with the Rector, the Wardens and others to simplify the Communion set-up and baptisms when the church was open and provide support to the Rector as needed.

The Guild encourages and welcomes new members. No previous knowledge is required.

Flower Guild The Flower Guild, a sub group of the Altar Guild, prepares the two Altars and the Memorial Table each week with fresh flower arrangements. They _

are also responsible for the Altar flowers for weddings. During the Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving seasons, they decorate the Church with beautiful seasonal materials.

During this time of pandemic, the Flower Guild continues to provide, appropriate dried flowers or other similar arrangements.

LAY PASTOR Brother Reginald Crenshaw’s ministry is described elsewhere. It is important for our committee to place on record our appreciation of his liturgical leadership as a gifted preacher, and theologian.

Their aim is to keep the membership to a minimum of 10 members, since this works well for scheduling, but they are currently below that number. Members of the congregation who love flowers and/or flower arranging are encouraged to consider joining this rewarding ministry.

Choir Elsewhere in this report you will find a report from the Director of Music, Rachel Yoon. She and the members of the choir were able to “pivot” in the face of the lockdown. As with other parishioners, they turned to available technology to continue their amazing contribution to the liturgical life of our parish, as far a music is concern. Please accept our thanks.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS AND SERVICES 190TH Anniversary Bishops’ Sundays Though COVID-19 may have limited much of what we wanted to do for our anniversary, it was not able to prevent our “Bishops’ Sundays”. By way of ZOOM, Archbishop Linda Nicholls, Primate and a former Incumbent, was our preacher on May 24, while our Diocesan, Bishop Andrew Asbil, came to us on June 14. After the “return” to the building in September, Bishop Kevin Robertson and Bishop Peter Fenty visited us, in person, on October 25 and November 1, respectively.

Lay Assistants, Lectors and Intercessors The team of Lay Assistants, Lectors and Intercessors, is a group of anywhere from 20 – 30 members. The team reads the lessons, leads the Prayers of the People and has a designated responder for our Sunday services on the ZOOM Platform. When we returned to the building in September, some members read the lessons in person from there.

Holy Trinity School Founders’ Service We were pleased to celebrate Founders’ Sunday on November 17, as the school marked its 39th anniversary of its foundation. The Chaplain, The Rev. Canon Stephen Crowther, and The Head of School, Ms. Helen Pereira-Raso, joined us from the school’s auditorium via ZOOM. Several students and staff participated by way of recorded segments of the service.

Even though the pandemic kept us close during the Christmas season, we were able to have two services on Zoom on Christmas Eve with Canon Stephen and Bro. Reginald present in the church.

A Service of Lessons and Carols was held at 5 pm led by our young people and an 8 pm service which included our members and Clergy. There was also a Christmas Day service led, from the church, by Canon Stephen via ZOOM.

Remembrance Services Remembrance Day is important in our parish.

Once again we joined a grateful nation to acknowledge those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

In past years, we hosted our annual service of Remembrance and Hope (Blue Christmas) on a week night. This year, we had a virtual celebration on the Fourth Sunday of Advent during the 10am service.

Christmas 2020 Every Christmas is special. As we saw over the past year, COVID-19 is able to unearth our creative juices and enable us go where we have never gone before.

From all reports, the highlight of the Christmas celebration was the Service of Lessons and Carols. Our young people rose to the occasion and, with members of the senior choir, blessed our community as they read the lessons of the service and sung and played some of the carols.

VESTRY REPORT - OUTREACH COMMITTEE The COVID-19 pandemic impacted our outreach ministry as it has with other forms of ministry exercised by our church and life in general. For example, the Outreach Committee, proposed by our Incumbent, in his report to Vestry last year, was not constituted. This committee will be responsible for ensuring that the Church plays an active and vital role in responding to the needs of members of our parish and the wider community, contributing to the improvement of social conditions of those being served.

As in the case of Zawuda, there has been no further progress with their applications. None of the sponsorships require a financial commitment from HTC. MOSAIC INTERFAITH OUT OF THE COLD (OOTC) Last year was a difficult, and very different year for Mosaic Interfaith Out of The Cold. In March, when Ontario was locked down due to COVID19, the Shelter System was forced to change the way they operated. OOTC switched from running in a different location each night to a single location. The new COVID-19 rules resulted in reduced guests, paid staff and no volunteers.

Our parish stepped up and, thanks to dedicated sandwich makers, donations and support from OOTC, we provided over 1,500 lunches from March through to the end of May. At the end of May, a facility was opened by the Region to facilitate placement in housing. This facility is still running.

Though the committee was not formally established, we were not prevented from responding to the some of the on-going issues that continue to occupy our attention. We were still able to respond to the gospel imperative to be of service to the “least of these”.

CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE The Christmas Assistance Program provides help to needy families in the Thornhill area during the Christmas season. In past years, volunteers from the Thornhill churches have come together to pack hampers with non-perishable foods, ageappropriate toys, and grocery store gift cards.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic that was not possible.

Instead, all donated funds were to purchase for larger amount in gift cards.

In November, under directions from the province and region, the OOTC re-opened to a new set of rules. Again, with reduced guests and no volunteers, all food must be catered and delivered in individual sealed meals. The Region wanted a single location on a bus route. A compromise was reached and two sites are being used.

In 2020, we delivered gift envelopes to 113 families, which included 193 adults and 150 teens/children. Many families are new to Canada and struggling financially. Sincere thanks go out to HTC parishioners for their generous contributions.

It should be noted that with the new COVID-19 rules, OOTC had to stop offering all services to the “nearly homeless”.

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP At the end of December 2020, we were still awaiting a decision from Immigration on the application of Zawuda Tesfai, an Eritrean citizen currently living in Israel. All sponsorship processing was halted due to the pandemic. As a result, there was no change to Zawuda’s status.

At last word, she was safe and financially stable in Tel Aviv. Her sponsorship is being funded by

The other major change for OOTC is that it has merged with Blue Doors, a charity that provides temporary housing, helps in finding housing, and provides ongoing support. OOTC will continue to provide the Emergency Shelter program. We will refer the appropriate guests to Blue Doors. _

Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) This is the key fund raiser for OOTC. Last year OOTC raised $52,436 through this campaign. Our parish was the number one team last year raising $5,895. This year OOTC is again taking part in the campaign but is combining its effort with Blue Doors. and Holy Trinity Church again has a team.

RICHMOND HILL COMMUNITY FOOD BANK ALL SAINTS COMMUNITY During 2020, there were 42 deliveries of food, personal use items to the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank, and four deliveries to the All Saints Community Kitchen/Clothing Closet before deliveries were suspended on March 15.

Thanks to parishioners who contributed financially towards the purchase of food and personal use items. Your interest and support are appreciated by the clients and staff of both organizations. Persons who wish more information about this ministry may speak to Peter Paterson.

SENIORS’ LUNCHEON This program provides opportunity for the shutins in our community to attend worship and enjoy fellowship four times a year in celebration of Easter, Picnic/Summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sadly, the pandemic cancelled all of them.

On December 11, Christmas treats baked by Elaine Hishon and her daughter Nicole, packaged by Elaine Ainlay, Mary Ruth Morrison and Elaine Hishon, were delivered to elderly parishioners. Gary Ainlay and Mel Morrison were the drivers. It became very obvious how surprised the recipients were but more so how eager they were to talk with the deliverers. It seemed connection to their church was greatly missed. The timely visit was much appreciated.

Many thanks to Angella Smith and Swan Li who prepared the cards that went with the surprise Christmas package.

VESTRY REPORT - ANGLICAN CHURCH WOMEN "ACW" It was a VERY strange year. We, ACW ladies, first learned a 4-letter word ZOOM. We had to find a way to meet when we could not be face to face.

Thanks to Enid Corbett we got used to Zoom. We could hear and see each other and taken part in the meetings.

VESTRY REPORT – PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

2020

‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;’ 2 Corinthians 1:3

The Hebrew word nechama appears only in the New Testament and means comfort or consolation. If you break it down, you get two overlapping words – noach, (which means comfort and resting) and cham or chama (which means warm). Nechama signifies an offer of rest and easement to a troubled, suffering soul.

In 2020, like no other year in my history of heading the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Holy Trinity, was there a need, a want, a desire, a longing for this nechama. Everywhere you looked, no matter the distance from our Church, no matter the race, creed, colour or background… were countless, troubled and suffering souls and situations to be found.

For simplicity, prayer shawl distribution was combined at the beginning of the pandemic with St. Stephen’s Church, Maple – and involved close to 200 shawls given to individuals and families in need. My recent Trinity News report outlined details of the backstories – some of which were, frankly, troubling to read… yet so many others offered glimmers of resilience, hope and joy to uplift the heart.

For the most part, this Ministry was the only outreach from the Healing and Wellness Committee, since plans for the Madagascar travelogue with Rev. Don Downer were stymied by the lockdown and there was no Parish Nurse in place to lead the Committee. Don’s travelogue was rescheduled in 2021 and was well attended and much enjoyed!

The Rev. Phelan Scanlon, Associate Priest at HTC during “Linda’s days” as Rector was grateful for shawls sent to him this year (as well as handknitted toques made by Pat Burton!), for his Ministry. Phelan is Missionary Priest in the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee – serving several parishes including Constance Lake First Nation, with members of Ojibway and Cree ancestry. He currently lives in Hearst, Ontario (approximately 935 kilometres to the north of us and 520 kilometres east of Thunder Bay).

Rather challenging feedback from a few parishioners in the Summer encouraged me to seek direction and request that a crystal-clear focus and firm mandate be established to guide future efforts of this vital Ministry.

VESTRY REPORT - FOOTLIGHTS CLUB

2020

In January we made a presentation to the Thornhill Ministerial in which we suggested that perhaps the other churches in Thornhill might be interested in working with us on some joint future productions. This would hopefully provide us with some new blood, and make us more of a community theatre. Our presentation was well received, but shortly thereafter, Covid-19

descended upon us, putting any thoughts of collaboration on hold.

We had hoped to have a Cabaret style music/ skit night as part of the 190 Anniversary celebration, but that too had to be shelved. Consequently, there is no activity to report for 2020.

The past year has been tough on most, if not all of us. Like everything else, activities in the church library is at a pause and at the period of lockdown due to the pandemic.

We continue to collect cancelled stamps for Christian Salvage Mission, who are grateful for our support of their ministry. CSM has continued to help those in need by donations received to assist with their cause. A big thank you to all those who willingly continue to support Christian Salvage Mission by bringing in your cancelled stamps. It is most appreciated. (No need to cut the stamps, I will cut to specifications)

With hope in the near future we will be back to borrowing books such as Bible study material, Family friendly books, Christian Fictions, books for children. All free and available for check out anytime the building is open.

VESTRY REPORT - ENDOWMENT FUND

Source of the Fund The Holy Trinity Endowment Fund was established at the Annual Vestry Meeting in 1980 with the proceeds from the sale of the first rectory, in recognition of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Church.

The new Trustees of the fund for 2020-2021 are: Gary Ainlay, Chair Susan Preston, Treasurer Jennifer Kennedy, Secretary Stephen Law Lindsay Allison

Purpose of the Fund The purpose of the Fund is to generate income which would be used for projects not ordinarily within the purview of the general funds of Holy Trinity Church. In particular, the income may be used to support Anglican and Christian work at the national, diocesan or parochial level and to ensure the appropriate upkeep of the lands and premises owned or maintained by Holy Trinity Church.

Parishioners and members of various organizations submit written requests for financial contributions to the Secretary or Chair of the Fund. We ask that these requests be received by the end of June. We rely on the information in the submissions to make our recommendations for disbursements of the Fund.

So as not to erode the capital of the fund, the amount available for disbursement is calculated at 90% of the previous year’s net income plus any new contributions received in the year, provided the total amount distributed does not exceed 100% of the net income. Income is recorded on a cash basis.

Summary of how the Fund works Five Trustees, who are elected at a Special Vestry Meeting held each Fall, administer the Fund within the terms of the Trustee Act.

The Margaret Harding Garden Memorial Fund The Margaret Harding Memorial Garden Fund was established in 1997 through a donation from Merrit Harding in memory of his wife. The Endowment Fund trustees manage this fund in accordance to its agreement. Generally, the agreement provides for 90% of earnings to be paid out annually and the difference added to capital.

The investment income from the fund is used to help pay for the creation and plantings of the church gardens, and maintenance of the trees and shrubs on the grounds of the church. Net income for the year was $635, and the funds available for disbursal to the Garden Committee in the Spring of 2021 are $572.

VESTRY REPORT - EVA REA MILLENNIUM (BURSARY) FUND The Eva Rea Millennium Fund was created in 2001 from a portion of the bequest to Holy Trinity Church by a long-time and generous parishioner, Eva Rae. The Fund began with a working value of $122,807.93 which was initially invested in a GIC and later moved into the Diocesan Consolidated Investment Fund, a professionally managed mutual fund which has shown good returns since 2001. While our parish will always be grateful to Eva Rea for providing the initial funding, we are also thankful to so many parishioners who through their bequests of amounts from Wills and Estates, have been responsible for the growth of the Fund, the value of which as of December 31, 2020 is $466,158.99.

Pursuant to the By-laws of the Fund, each year the accrued interest becomes the amount designated for disbursement to students who are related to our parishioners and, as of 2018, the bursary was extended to include one student from each of the local high schools. These

monies are paid directly to the college or university of the student’s choice. In 2020, we were pleased to provide bursaries to 14 students, nine students related to our parishioners and five students from local high schools.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Committee, Gloria Downey, Pat Burton, Nancy Cutler (Warden) and Ed Carter (Warden) who, without their dedication, the administration of the Fund would not be possible. To Pat Burton for the countless hours she spent in researching all the historical and current financial information and to Gloria Downey for her excellence in editing so many required documents.

We, as members of Holy Trinity Church, will always be grateful to those many long-time parishioners who, though no longer with us, have been able through their generosity to enrich the lives of so many students and continue to do so.
