Holy Family Catholic High School offers students excellence in education by providing opportunities for students to grow spiritually, morally, intellectually, and physically within a community of faith. We empower and encourage our students to achieve personal excellence, to use their talents to lead, to serve God, one another, and larger community.
Holy Family Catholic High School proudly announces the recognition of two students by the National Merit Scholarship Program—Eli Foudray, a National Merit Semifinalist, and Nate Hamiltion, a National Merit Commended Student.
More than 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Each year, National Merit Semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and the highest-scoring PSAT test takers in each state. Just over 16,000 students were named semifinalists, and approximately 15,000 will advance as finalists in February 2025.
Approximately 34,000 students whose scores rank in the top 2–3% of all PSAT test takers, but do not qualify them as semifinalists, are named National Merit Commended Students.
As Holy Family Catholic High School celebrates its 25th anniversary, we pause to reflect on the blessings that have guided our journey. From our earliest days, it is clear that God’s providence has been at work in bringing this community together. Our mission, rooted in faith and committed to excellence, has flourished through the dedication of countless individuals who have shaped our story.
This issue of Passages highlights a few of the people, traditions, and values that make Holy Family unique. You’ll read of alumni making an impact in their communities, students excelling in academics, arts, and athletics, and benefactors who have given generously to ensure the transformational power of a Holy Family education continues for generations to come.
The milestones of our 25th year are more than moments of celebration—they are reminders of the community’s unwavering belief in our mission. The support we’ve received through giving societies, scholarships, and other fundraising initiatives sustains and strengthens the foundation of our
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
– Ephesians 2:10
work. Every gift, whether of time, treasure, or talent, is an expression of faith in the value of a Holy Family education.
As you read this issue, I invite you to reflect on how God’s hand has guided our school and inspired this extraordinary community. Together, we are not only honoring the past but also building a future full of promise. Each student who walks through our doors benefits from this shared legacy of generosity and faith.
Thank you for your continued partnership. May God’s blessings remain with Holy Family Catholic High School and our community as we step confidently into the next 25 years.

JOHN DOLS
Each year brings new faces to our Holy Family community. Assistant Principal Dr. Melissa Livermore and I have the privilege of choosing dedicated individuals with impressive educational backgrounds and skill sets who also believe in the mission of a Lasallian Catholic high school education. They must subscribe to the belief that the best way to educate students is to authentically connect with their hearts and minds. Education is a human endeavor.
In addition to seven teachers, Mary Ann Davis, Kevin CK Berg, Graham Friske, Heidi Keyho, Susan Michael, Sam Puff ˈ09, and Blaine Walstrom, we also welcomed Bridget Larson, R.N., to our wellness center and Ashley Drehobl to our counseling staff.
In June, the archdiocese assigned Fr. Aric Aamodt to Holy Family as our new school chaplain. A familiar face to many Catholics in the southwest metro, Father Aric also joins our theology department as a faculty member.
Responding to the vocation of teaching in a Catholic high school requires a commitment to educating the whole student. I am so grateful that this group of individuals has answered the call. We are blessed to have them. Welcome to the Family!
“To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God.”

This year’s Spirit of Fire gala, held on Saturday, September 21, was an evening to remember at the stunning Bavaria Downs’ Equestria West. Guests began their evening in the courtyard, mingling and savoring delicious food before the excitement moved indoors.
Following a welcome from President Mike Brennan and Principal John Dols, the O’Sullivan Auctioneers brought energy and a little cowboy flair to the live auction and fund-a-need appeal for school technology. Our community's amazing support has resulted in our ability to immediately upgrade classroom technology, enhance campus security, and provide cutting-edge tools across departments.
But, the fun didn’t stop there! John Dols and Matt Thuli kept the room buzzing with their signature charm as emcees of the crowdfavorite “Heads or Tails” game. Afterward, the dance floor came alive with the infectious energy of the Blue Water Kings band, keeping the celebration going well into the night.
One parent, attending for the first time, summed it up perfectly: “I didn’t know what to expect, but I had so much fun! The energy in the room was just amazing.”
Thanks to the incredible generosity of attendees, sponsors, and supporters, more than $271,000 was raised during and after this year’s event, showcasing our community’s dedication to advancing Holy Family’s mission.
Please plan to join us for next year’s Spirit of Fire on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

CONNECTING THE LEGACY OF HOLY FAMILY'S LEADERSHIP TO OUR PLANS FOR TOMORROW
Our annual Torchbearer Dinner on October 27 brought together Holy Family Catholic High School’s board and administrative leadership spanning more than 25 years. New this year was the addition of members of the newly established Holy Family Benefactor Giving Societies, recognizing those who have made substantial financial gifts to our school.
The evening began with Mass in the school chapel followed by a social hour, allowing guests time to reconnect and, in some cases, to receive introductions to each other. The roar of conversation and laughter quieted as the agenda gave way to the evening’s program and the opportunity for President Brennan to provide an update on the current state of the school. He also recognized and thanked the more than 100 inaugural inductees of the Holy Family Giving Societies, and shared his gratitude to all who were present for their support of our school’s mission.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the 2024 Torchbearer Award. It was an honor to recognize the lifetime contributions of one of the original four “coffee shop boys,” Holy Family co-founder Rob Roy, with the this year's Torchbearer Award. Holy Family is forever grateful for Rob and his wife Joleen’s ongoing dedication and instrumental role as catalysts in shaping our school’s existence. The evening’s student speaker, Nora Swartzbaugh, offered a beautiful sentiment of gratitude for Rob's contributions when she said, “Mr. Roy, I may never have met you before tonight, but I know that the only reason I am here today is because of you. Thank you.”
Holy Family Catholic High School’s existence is predicated on the dream of our earliest supporters and sustained through a generous community of benefactors. These special donors are now celebrated through the newly established Holy Family Giving Societies.
Membership in the giving societies is based on lifetime giving and acknowledges the dedication, faith, and vision shared by a remarkable group of our school’s current and alumni parents and friends. Through their contributions, members have demonstrated an extraordinary belief in the value of a Holy Family education and have helped create opportunities for our students to grow in faith, pursue knowledge, and become compassionate leaders.
Giving Societies members are invited to exclusive gatherings, receive special recognition in our annual report, and enjoy unique opportunities to witness the impact of their support in action. Whether it’s through scholarship funds that open doors for students, campus improvements that enhance dai-
ly life, or innovative programs that broaden our academic offerings, their generosity to Holy Family fuels the life of our school.
Beyond recognition, Holy Family Giving Societies are a celebration of belonging to a community of shared values and lasting impact. As we look ahead, we’re deeply grateful for the unwavering commitment of these donors who help us continue to provide an exceptional, faith-based education. Together, they have built a legacy that strengthens Holy Family’s foundation for future generations.
We thank each member of our Giving Societies for their devotion to our mission and enduring support of our students and teachers. With deep apprecation, our school is proud to publicly recognize their essential role in Holy Family’s story.

As we continue to reflect on the people who have shaped our school’s mission, among them is Fr. Bob White, whose faith and generosity have deeply impacted both St. Victoria Catholic Church and Holy Family.
Fr. Bob became pastor of St. Victoria in 1997, three years before Holy Family opened its doors. Over time, his longevity at St. Victoria made him a frequent fixture of spiritual support at our school, serving on the school board and as the Fire football chaplain. Those experiences led Father Bob to establish an endowment for tuition assistance at Holy Family. “I’ve always wanted to help young people who’d like to attend Holy Family but couldn’t afford the tuition,” he said. “It’s such a beautiful experience. I want to make it an option for all students, not let cost be a barrier.”
Fr. Bob partnered with the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota to establish two endowments: one to provide tuition assistance at Holy Family and another to support the mission and ministry of St. Victoria Parish. Fr. Bob set up his endowments so that some money is available now, with additional funds coming from his estate upon his death. “I wanted the satisfaction of seeing this put to work while I’m still around,” Fr. Bob said. “And the money is needed now.”
In honor of his generosity, Holy Family has named Fr. Bob the first member of its Eternal Flame Giving Society, which recognizes those who leave a lasting legacy through planned gifts or endowments. Legacy gifts can be made in several ways including designating a bequest in your will or trust; naming Holy Family as a beneficiary of a financial account; or establishing an endowment fund.
If Holy Family is already a part of your estate plan, let us know by reaching out to President Mike Brennan at brennanm@hfchs.org. For more information on making a legacy gift to Holy Family Catholic High School, please contact your financial advisor or visit our legacy giving webpage, hfchs.org/legacy-giving.
ALUMNI
In my new role as alumni director, I look forward to connecting with more alumni and strengthening our community ties. I’ve already enjoyed my conversations with several graduates spanning from the Class of 2003 to our most recent, the Class of 2024. In addition to finding ways to connect with each other and give back to current Holy Family students, our alumni community frequently mentions the idea of a hall of fame. What better time to begin that work than during our 25th year!
With the support of our school's leadership, booster club, and activities department, I am proud to announce the establishment of the Holy Family Hall of Fame honoring the contributions of individuals and teams that have left indelible marks on the school’s rich history of excellence. With a legacy of 25 years, this initiative celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches, and teams who exemplify the spirit, values, and dedication of the Holy Family community.
The Hall of Fame will select recipients from community nominated individuals or teams in three distinguished categories: Student-Athlete, Coach, and Team. Each inductee will represent the very best of Holy Family’s commitment to excellence in athletics, character, and service.
The Student-Athlete category recognizes alumni who demonstrated exceptional performance in athletics during their time at HFCHS. To qualify, nominees must have lettered in a varsity sport, maintained academic eligibility throughout their high school career, and graduated from HFCHS at least 10 years prior to the induction year. In rare cases of extraordinary achievement, the Hall of Fame Committee may reduce the 10-year restriction with unanimous agreement. Beyond their athletic and academic records, nominees must also reflect positively on their families, their communities, and HFCHS itself, showcasing the values instilled by a Holy Family education.
The Coach category celebrates those who have shaped the school’s athletic programs through outstanding leadership and achievement. Eligible nominees must have demonstrated exceptional coaching ability during their tenure at HFCHS, with accomplishments such as consistent winning seasons, guiding multiple teams to state tournaments, or leading a team to a state championship. Additionally, the committee considers foundational contributions to the growth of programs and the school’s athletic reputation. Inductees must exhibit exemplary character both during and after their time at HFCHS.
HFCHS teams that have demonstrated notable achievements will also be honored. The Team category is reserved for groups whose collective success has advanced their program and brought recognition to Holy Family. Whether through advancing to state tournaments, winning championships, or serving as a foundation for future success, these teams embody the pride and tradition of Holy Family Catholic High School athletics and activities.
The Hall of Fame will serve as a lasting tribute to those who have contributed to Holy Family’s tradition of excellence both on and off the field. Inductees will be celebrated not only for their accomplishments but for embodying the school’s core values.
While the committee and I oversee the execution of the nominations and selection process, the Holy Family Hall of Fame belongs to our community and your input is important to its success.
In early February, we will email a nomination form to our community. Nominations are due by March 1, 2025. They will then be reviewed by the selection committee and recognized during the 2025-2026 school year.
Senior Casey Cronin capped off a remarkable high school tennis career with a third-place finish in the 2024 MSHSL State Class A Individuals Tennis Tournament, cementing her legacy as one of Holy Family’s tennis greats.
Competing at the MSHSL Class A Tennis Individuals Tournament for a second time in as many years, Casey Cronin stepped onto the court as the No. 3 seed and quickly established herself as a formidable contender. Displaying a combination of grit and finesse, Cronin overpowered her Round 1 and Round 2 opponents in two-set matches. After falling to #2-seed Fatemah Vang, she battled back to claim a third place medal in a match that came down to a final set tiebreaker.
In the heat of the difficult third set, Cronin’s coach Amy Dean reminded her to emulate one of her own favorite professional tennis players, Ben Shelton, known for his positive and light-hearted attitude on the court. And it helped. “Coach Dean was right,” Casey recalled, “I wanted to enjoy my last high school tennis match. I knew if I gave it everything I had and kept my chin up, I’d be proud of the result no matter what the outcome was.”
Dean is sad to see Cronin’s time with Holy Family Tennis come to an end. She said, “I know how much Casey loves the sport and that’s contagious. Her dedication inspires everyone around her to do better, work harder, and have more fun. She’ll be missed.”
For now, Cronin has traded her tennis racket for a hockey stick to play defense for Holy Family’s girls hockey team. She’d love to see the team make a run for the state championship in February, a unique opportunity for an athlete to experience two different state competitions in the same school year.
The Mound Westonka/Holy Family (MW/HF) swim team made a splash at the MSHSL Class A State Swim and Dive Meet, securing an impressive fifth place finish—their second highest in team history. Helping lead the charge were Holy Family sophomore athletes Rachel Betts and Laney Hendrickson, whose performances were crucial to the team’s success.
Betts played a pivotal role in the 200m relay, helping her teammates, Mia Don goske, Camille Ness, and Grace Warden, secure an 8th-place finish. Reflecting on the moment, Betts said, “The relay was really exciting because we reached one of our goals, the A Final. Swimming against the seven best other relay teams in the state was exhilarating!”
Hendrickson added to the team’s success with stellar individual performanc es. She secured a 10th-place finish in the 200m freestyle and an impressive 6th place in the 500m freestyle. “I set a goal for myself to place top 8 in the 500 freestyle this year, so it was really cool to get 6th in the state and achieve that goal I had worked so hard for,” Hendrickson shared. “I was grateful I had the opportunity to swim at state this year because it is such a fun meet and a fun environment. Everyone is so excited and competitive; it just really makes you want to swim fast!”
The MW/HF team’s All-State athletes: Rachel Betts, Mia Dongoske, Laney Hendrickson, Annemarie Johnson, Erica Johnson, Camille Ness, Izzy Starr, Onna Sullivan, and Grace Warden—led the team to their historic fifth place finish.
When Head Coach Dan O’Brien joined Holy Family in early 2023, he brought not only a wealth of experience but also a new sense of hope to a program that had struggled for multiple seasons. O’Brien and his coaching staff, including Hall of Fame coaches Dave Nelson, Jeff Ferguson, and Paul Miller, have quickly transformed Fire Football’s culture, off-season workout schedule, and football acumen, leading to a remarkable turnaround in just two years.
In its inaugural season under Coach O’Brien, Holy Family advanced all the way to the Section 6A Final, a strong showing that highlighted the program’s rapid improvement. This season, O'Brien's second with the Fire, the team went even farther, clinching the Section Championship and earning a spot in the MSHSL State Class AAA Football Tournament.
With a 6-2 record in the 2024 regular season, Holy Family proved they could compete with tough opponents, including larger Class 4A teams. Victories over Concordia/St. Croix Lutheran and Minneapolis North highlighted the growth and skill development under Coach O’Brien’s guidance.
However, facing the eventual state champions, Stewartville High School, in the quarterfinals was a monumental challenge. The defending state champion and undefeated powerhouse boasted a roster filled with experienced, physically strong athletes. Their high-powered offense was difficult for any team to contain. Despite this, Holy Family played Stewartville tougher than any opponent had all season, offering a glimpse of the potential for this program.
Sophomore quarterback Ethan Ryan credited the team’s success to their growing chemistry and hard work. “It’s been amazing to see how far we’ve come,” he said. “We’ve put in so much effort. I think next year, we could be an even stronger team.”
Junior offensive running back/safety Noah Galvin echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the importance of their off-season training. He said, “From the weight room program to the summer camps, everyone’s bought in. The wins against tough teams show that we’re ready for the next challenge.”
For Ethan Ryan’s older brother Jackson, this year’s journey was a personal one. Jackson joined the program as a senior. “I always knew I wanted to play football,” he explained. “This team, this program, has something special. When I joined the team, I could feel the energy, and I was excited to contribute. We pushed ourselves hard, and it was cool to be even a small part of this turnaround.”
• 6-2 regular season record
• 8-3 overall record
• Section 6A champions
• Qualified for the Class AAA state tournament
• This year’s senior class is 15-6 over the last 2 years.
• Griffin Murray set the school record for career interceptions.
• Tanner Davis was named District Running Back of the Year.
Coach O’Brien expressed his pride in his players and his excitement for the future. He said, “I couldn’t be more proud of this team and the work they’ve put in to improve. From early mornings in the weight room to summer practices, these young men have done what we’ve asked of them. To see that hard work translate into a season where we won the section final and competed hard against one of the best teams in the state—it’s just the beginning for this program.”
For Coach O’Brien and his staff, preparations for the next season began without delay. “We’ve got a talented group of players who now have state tournament experience under their belts,” he said. “Our fans and community were incredible this season, showing up in full force to support the team. The stadium renovation has brought a whole new energy, and I think everyone really felt that upgrade. There’s a lot to be excited about for the future.”
• Ethan Ryan was named District Quarterback of the Year.
• Griffin Murray was named Overall District MVP.
• Dave Nelson was named Asst. Coach of the Year.
• Dan O’Brien was named Coach of the Year.
• All District: Tanner Davis, Ethan Ryan, Levi Trout, Breck Neubauer, Eli Foudray, and Griffin Murray
• All District Honorable Mention: Noah Galvin, Connor Schreier, and Levi Skinner
Holy Family Catholic High School’s theater and music departments joined forces for a spectacular, sold-out run of Seussical the Musical, a vibrant celebration of the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss. Under the expert guidance of new theater director, Kevin CK Berg, instrumental music director, Thomas Prahl, and vocal music director, Tanner Larson, the production showcased the immense talent of Holy Family students.
The live pit orchestra added an extra layer of magic, bringing the imaginative score to life, and challenging the lighting and sound crew to artfully balance the Seussically exuberant energy in the performance center. The creative set, inventive costumes, and powerful performances captured the hearts of audiences young and old, making it a standout highlight of the school year.
Each performance was a celebration of teamwork, creativity, and the arts. As the curtain fell, the audience was reminded of the production’s central theme: “Anything’s possible if you just imagine it’s true!” Truly, the sky was not the limit, but just the view.
The music department’s bustling fall schedule transitioned seamlessly into December’s Coffee House and Christmas concert, while the theater department gears up for its January one-act production, “31 Plays in 60 Minutes.”

The Holy Family Booster Club is a parent-led organization that builds traditions that inspire community involvement and provides additional financial support for athletics and activities. The organization creates leadership and volunteer opportunities for parents, students, staff, and alumni.
Since formalizing a program for coaches and advisors to request support for projects, the Holy Family Booster Club has allocated nearly $200,000 in funding, helping to enhance a wide range of activities and athletic initiatives.
Three years ago, when the newly imagined Booster Club began its inaugural year under parent leadership, nine executive committee members navigated the establishment of bylaws, volunteer recruitment, event planning, membership promotion, and the allocation of funds for activity projects. Since then, the executive committee has expanded to include two additional members, and more than 25 parents now contribute to key initiatives and areas of execution.
This year, the Booster Club proudly welcomed its first Holy Family alum, Greg Westerhaus '08, to the executive committee. Greg’s involvement highlights the growing engagement of alumni, further strengthening the sense of community and continuity within the organization.
Cynthia Kapke, the current president of the Holy Family Booster Club, is proud of the growth in volunteer involvement. “The Booster Club has become a cornerstone of the Holy Family community. We’re not just supporting our student-athletes, club members, and performers—we’re building lasting connections among parents, staff, and alumni that enrich the experience for everyone,” she said.
The Booster Club holds its annual meeting and membership update in the spring and is looking to add new volunteers to the executive committee and other leadership roles. Parents and alumni interested in learning more about committee responsibilities and ways to get involved can connect via email at boosterclub@hfchs.org.
Look for booster club meeting minutes, membership registration information, and fundraising forms on the booster club web page: hfchs.org/booster-club.
The HF Booster Club focuses on these key objectives:
• Building community by creating sustainable traditions that foster and inspire participation and attendance.
• Providing financial support for extracurricular activities in the form of equipment, grants, and fees.

In addition to hosting the annual Homecoming Tailgate, the booster club raises funds through the Ready Tee Fire Golf Classic, membership drives, game concessions, gate admissions, and yard sign sales. Those funds are returned to teams, clubs, and other activities through a formal funding request and approval process. A more complete list of projects supported by the booster club can be found on its web page.
This collage is just a snippet of student life at Holy Family from the first semester. We are proud of all of our students and celebrate their successes and interests including the many not showcased on these pages.
1. Sonja Laaksonen made school history when she became the first Holy Family volleyball player to earn 1,000 kills. Teammate Kalah Worm set a school record for the most digs in a single season.
2. As section runners-up, doubles team Tali Bellefy and Meg Santini advanced to compete in the 2024 MSHSL Class A Tennis Tournament.
3. The Thanksgiving tradition of a meal served by faculty and staff members continues to be a favorite for both students and staff.
4. AD Rory Oster leads us in a long-awaited celebration of our Boys State Golf Champions—a summer victory turned into a September Convocation spotlight.
5. The music department presented its Christmas Concert to an audience filled with family and friends.
6. Students raise their small group banners at the Fire Way All-School Retreat, celebrating community and building connections.
7. Once a month, Holy Family ambassadors greet the students at St. Hubert School as they arrive for the start of their day on High-Five Fridays.
8. Holy Family Student Council’s annual food drive collected 1,428 pounds of food and hygiene products for Bountiful Basket Food Shelf in Chaska.
9. Holy Family joined 500 Minnesota schools in hosting a mock election for students 17 and under as an opportunity to learn more about the voting process.
10. Students had the opportunity to travel abroad as part of May Term and summer immersion opportunities. Trips included various tours of Europe including the British Isles, Italy, Greece, and Spain.
11. Student leaders welcomed the newest members of the Holy Family student body to their first day of Fire Academy Ninth-Grade Orientation.
12. Parents and players from the Holy Family Tackle Cancer fundraising committee presented Randy Shaver with a check for this year’s proceeds from their Tackle Cancer Drive. Holy Family’s generous community brought in the second highest amount of any Minnesota high school this fall.
13. Holy Family welcomed our new school chaplain, Fr. Aric Aamodt, a familiar face to many west metro Catholic families as he spent several years serving the St. Hubert Parish Community. 13

A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO PASSAGES MAGAZINE
The 2023-24 Holy Family Catholic High School Annual Report is both an acknowledgment and a thank you to the many individuals who make our mission possible. Through gifts to the Holy Family Annual Fund, support for capital campaigns, participation in fundraising events, and countless hours of volunteer work, this community’s generosity allows a transformational, faith-based education to flourish. This report stands as a reminder that our school’s foundation was built by dreamers and continues to grow through the unwavering support of our generous benefactors.
While this report reflects the accomplishments of the past fiscal year (July 2023-June 2024), it also celebrates the impact of your generosity on our future. Each contribution has strengthened our school’s financial health and set the stage for our students, teachers, and administration to succeed in the coming year. We hope you see in this issue a reflection of our commitment to honoring your gifts and using them to fulfill our mission. We look forward to partnering with you as we prepare today’s students and future generations, so that in all things, God may be glorified.
YEAR 2023-24
Spirit of Fire was held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Bavaria Downs. Fund-a-Need raised over $204,000 for student scholarships at Holy Family Catholic High School. The belief that a Holy Family education should be available to every student and family regardless of economic background is rooted in our Lasallian tradition.
