Dear Friends,

The great William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” All too often, students and educators associate education with the teaching of facts — the filling of the pail. At Holy Child, we aspire to ignite inspiration — the fire — within students, fueling their creativity and growth. For 120 years, our educators have served as conduits between who students are and who they are meant to be.

Everyone connected to Holy Child plays a significant role in fulfilling our Mission, including our donors. We are deeply grateful that you understand the value of the work that we do. In the following pages, you will see the incredible impact of community support, our innovative plans for the future, and stories of donors like you — all of these represent the facets that come together to produce what makes Holy Child special.

Your contributions are not just financial; they are investments in the dreams, aspirations, and potential of each student who steps onto our campus. It is your generosity that allows us to kindle fires of curiosity, ignite the flames of creativity, and guide each student towards the path of becoming their best self.

Thank you for your loyalty and support. We hope that you are proud to know that you have made a difference. We are a greater Holy Child because of you.

With immense gratitude,

Mission

The mission of School of the Holy Child is to develop “women of conscience and action.” An all-girls, Catholic, independent, college-preparatory school for grades 5-12, the School is guided by the educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, and her dedication to “joy in teaching and joy in learning.” Accomplished and dedicated faculty members foster the spiritual development, individual talents, and interests of each student. This is realized through rigorous and comprehensive academic, arts, athletics, service, and global programs. Holy Child graduates are prepared for the innovative and critical thought necessary in a diverse, interconnected society.

1 IMPACT REPORT 2023 EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN OF CONSIENCE AND ACTION

Board of Trustees Update

What attracted you to School of the Holy Child and made you accept the Chair of the Board of Trustees role? My oldest daughter, Lizzie ’22, came to Holy Child as a fifth-grader. She was a tiny fourth-grader when we first visited the school, and I still vividly remember our student-led tour by Grace Doern ’17. My husband Pat and I were so impressed with the students, the faculty, the innovative programs, and the Mission. No other school had signature programs like Holy Child’s or the breadth of STEM experiences offered to fifth-graders. Being part of the Holy Child community is not just for the students; the School opens itself to the whole family. Our younger daughter, Maddie ’26, could not wait to start fifth grade. Over the years, we have felt so welcomed and have learned so much from the great speakers and programs offered to parents. I have had the honor of serving on the Board of Trustees for several years and have chaired the Governance Committee serving as Vice Chair. The Trustees are a dedicated and inspiring group; each member is devoted to the Mission. It is a privilege to continue to serve in the role of Board Chair and to support the School as it thrives under the leadership of Colleen Pettus.

How do you envision fostering a strong partnership between the Board of Trustees and the School’s administration, faculty, staff, students, and parents? One of the Board’s goals is to support the experiential learning and continue to foster the “joy in teaching,

joy in learning” that happens each day at Holy Child. It is with this goal in mind that the School will continue to actively invest in professional development for the faculty. For many years, Holy Child has established itself at the forefront of education with faculty leading presentations on peer editing, its bird project, the American Doll project, and more.

Can you share any specific initiatives or projects that you are particularly excited about implementing during your tenure as Chair of the Board of Trustees? One of the initiatives that particularly excites me is the realization of Head of School Colleen Pettus’ visionary plans. Under her leadership, we are embarking on the completion of the new academic building. This state-of-the-art facility will be more than just a building. It will be a space designed to spark intellectual curiosity, a place where the seeds of lifelong learning are sown. Fostering intellectual curiosity and developing lifelong learners provides a foundation for success as the role of work in a technology-driven world evolves.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Listen more than you speak.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things would you bring with you? Can I bring a boat?

Crafting the Next Chapter: A Special Farewell to Outgoing Trustees and a Welcome to New Trustees

The Board of Trustees plays a pivotal role in writing the story of School of the Holy Child. These volunteers, driven by a sense of mission and service, contribute their unique talents to the School’s narrative.

As Dr. Ellen Fahey-Smith, P ’08 passes the torch to Christine Ford, P ’22, ’26 as Board Chair, and we bid farewell to Catherine Clemens, P ’19, ’22, Katherine Doyle, P ’20, Edward Forst, P ’21, Sister Jeanne Ronzani, SHCJ, and Andrew Trickett, P ’22, ’30, let’s delve into the story of their unwavering dedication and the enduring legacy they leave behind.

The dedication of our outgoing Trustees extends beyond financial and strategic decisions; they embody the School’s ethos, fostering a community where students develop as compassionate women of conscience and action. Cathy was always eager and willing to say “yes” when called to action, serving as the Chair of the Academic and Student Affairs Committee and a member of the Institutional Advancement Committee. Kat helped the Board reach its full potential by vetting and interviewing candidates as Chair of the Governance Committee. Ed contributed to the financial health of Holy Child, chairing and guiding the Finance and Investment Committee for two years. Sister Jeanne Ronzani,

Get to Know Holy Child’s New Board Chair, Christine Ford, P ’22, ’26

SHCJ, served as a guidepost for the Board ensuring that the School remained Mission-focused. During her decades of service to Holy Child, Sister Jeanne wore many hats from most recently teaching math in the Middle School as well as having served as the Assistant Principal and Head of School. Her peaceful presence and unwavering faith-filled spirit have touched the lives of the Holy Child community deeply. Andrew brought innovation and strategy to the forefront, heading the Building Committee, which was integral in the planning for the new academic building that will be funded through the capital campaign.

Lastly, Ellen, a stalwart supporter of education, led the Board as Chair in its mission to advance the intellectual development and social growth of Holy Child’s students. When it came to

MARGARET FOX-TULLY

a plot twist like COVID-19, she and her Board colleagues did not flinch in the face of a pandemic, instead, they provided invaluable guidance and support to Colleen and her team, ensuring that Holy Child’s story continued to unfold with purpose and strength. During their tenure, Holy Child witnessed remarkable growth, including increased enrollment, successful fundraising, and campus enhancements like new science labs and and Gryphon Field returfing. Their leadership marks a turning point, shaping an exciting new chapter in our story. Their contributions extend beyond their service, inspiring future leaders through their stories and values. As we bid farewell to these leaders, their chapters become part of a larger tale, waiting for new characters to continue the saga. Now, we welcome the newest Board of Trustees members, each bringing a unique perspective to enrich our journey.

Margaret recently retired from her role as Head of School for Holy Child Academy in Drexel Hill, PA, where she focused on strengthening the school’s foundation for excellence, achievement, and service during her tenure since 2016. Margaret holds degrees from Rutgers University and Wesleyan University, and she is an active member of educational associations like NAIS and ADVIS. Her extensive experience also extends to leadership in accreditation processes and consulting roles.

MARK HOGAN, P ’22

Mark has been the Chief Advancement Officer at Iona Prep for over ten years. He holds degrees from College of the Holy Cross and the University of Dayton. Mark and his wife, Julie, have 2 children, a daughter Audrey ’22, who attends Villanova University, and a son Ryan, who is a sophomore at Iona Prep. Mark’s four sisters Joan ’71, Patricia ’73, Anne ’75, and Courtney ’77 all attended Holy Child and remain connected to the School. Additionally, his late parents Joan and Jack were committed HC community members. Mark is proud to follow in his father’s footsteps as a Trustee.

MEGAN HURLEY, P ’18, ’20

Megan is the Senior Vice President and General Counsel at PepsiCo North America. Megan is a graduate of Providence College and holds a JD degree from Rutgers Law School. Megan’s daughter, Lily ’18, graduated Wake Forest University in 2022, and currently works at Marsh McLennan in NYC. Charlotte ’20 is a senior at College of The Holy Cross. Megan and her husband, Mike, also share a son, Michael, who is a junior at Iona Prep.

SYDNEY KINDLER

Sydney’s connection to Holy Child began during her time as Assistant to the Former Head of School, Ann Sullivan. Though her professional role has since transitioned, the imprint of her dedication remains. Sydney served on multiple Benefit Committees and as a non-board member of the IA Committee, demonstrating her determination to contribute to the School’s growth and vitality. Her altruism knows no bounds, as she wholeheartedly devotes her efforts to the betterment of Holy Child. Her husband, Rob, is a Partner in the Corporate Department and Global Chair of M&A at Paul Weiss.

JOHN LINNARTZ, P ’18

John is the founder of Linnartz & Associates, a private advisory business in New Canaan, CT. He advises families on inherited, intergenerational wealth and the development of leadership qualities and values. His wife, Victoria, owns an interior design firm. Their daughter, Olivia ’18 graduated from Denison University in 2022 and is completing a Master in Education degree at American University while teaching at a Montessori school in McLean, VA. Their son, Jack, is a student at Bucknell University.

We look forward to the contributions that each new trustee will bring, crafting a narrative that transcends pages and propels Holy Child forward.

Your Gifts at Work…

Among other projects, your gifts have enabled the administration, faculty and staff, and Holy Child to:

Innovate through the purchase of Promethean Boards. This advanced and responsive hands-on learning tool can accommodate our students’ many learning styles. With interactive video and touch screen capability, teachers can engage students in collaborative and interactive lessons.

These state-of-the-art interactive boards will allow Holy Child to offer students cutting-edge technology to meet the wants of the age. The Promethean Boards will benefit the entire school community as they will be in many classrooms and used daily by teachers and students alike.

Change lives and create opportunities for deserving students.

Financial aid helps remove economic barriers to entry and open the door of possibility to students who are eager to work hard. Merit scholarships allow Holy Child to attract and support the best and brightest students enabling them to reach their full potential and contribute positively to our community. Because of our robust merit scholarship and financial aid program, more students are offered opportunities to lead, innovate, and make a positive difference in the world, elevating Holy Child’s ability to have a greater impact through education.

Recruit and Retain the most qualified and dedicated teachers while offering professional development opportunities.

Learning does not stop with our students. Donor support provides faculty with growth and skill development opportunities through workshops, training, and conferences. Holy Child’s Professional Development Committee, comprised of a dedicated group of faculty members, recently partnered with Folio.

Folio is an organization that works with independent schools to promote professional growth within the community. There are three components to Folio. Folio Collaborative is a community of over 160 independent schools that come together to learn from one another and share best practices related to faculty and staff growth. The Folio online platform is a flexible site for managing and guiding professional growth and learning and encouraging collaboration among faculty and staff. Finally, Folio provides all member schools with training and coaching to support faculty and staff goal-setting and development. All of this results in improved classroom practices and increased student learning.

This impressive opportunity demonstrates the desire of Holy Child faculty to become even better educators, the benefits of which are brought back to the classroom and ultimately to our students.

Philanthropy at Holy Child

Philanthropy impacts every corner of the Holy Child campus. We are incredibly grateful to the donors listed in this report for their financial contributions to the Annual Fund for Holy Child, our signature fundraising events, and our Capital Campaign.

From the buildings that students learn and thrive in, to our ability to attract and retain the best and brightest teachers and students, Holy Child wouldn’t be the vibrant, joy-filled institution empowering students to become the next generation of courageous and compassionate leaders that it is without the generosity of generations of alumnae, parents, and friends.

WHY I GIVE?

“When we give to School of the Holy Child, we are contributing to the future of these young scholars academically and personally. Investing in girls’ education has a multiplier effect, which builds pivotal foundations in their self-worth, character, and integrity. It aligns with our household principles of compassion, social justice, equity, and equality.

At the Middle School level, our donations help fund enriched learning experiences. Contributing to Holy Child also strengthens the sense of community, as it brings together like-minded individuals who believe in empowering young women through education. These girls are growing up together, making lifelong friends and confidants, so being integral in fostering those opportunities is a joy.”

WHY I GIVE?

“Holy Child is and will forever be a very special school. As the daughter of an active alumna, I visited campus often and couldn’t wait for my turn to attend. During my four years at Holy Child, I was nurtured, supported, challenged, and as a result, gained invaluable “wisdom, confidence and friendship.” I feel so fortunate to be part of this community and I value all that I was taught. To express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity, I continue to support Holy Child. I want to ensure that young women today and tomorrow continue to benefit from having the greatest educators, immersive educational experiences, access to theater and arts, and talented athletic coaches.”

LEAVING A LEGACY: CLASS OF 2023

The Senior Class Gift is a meaningful tradition at Holy Child. This gift allows seniors (now alumnae!) to honor their time here and leave their mark for future Gryphons to enjoy. We are pleased to share that 100% of the Class of 2023 donated to the Senior Class Gift. Here’s what Jenny Okon ’23 had to say about why the class donated built-in speakers as their gift.

“The dining hall is a space on campus where the entire school can meet and interact. It provides teachers and students an area to congregate, spend together, and take a little break during the busy school day. Similarly, music is something that connects people and encourages relaxation. The Class of 2023 chose the built-in speaker system because it would help to facilitate connection through the enjoyment of music in the Dining Hall. Historically, music was played through a portable speaker system which the Senior Class had the privilege of curating as the official DJs. The built-in speakers ensure that there would no longer be a need to worry about the misplacement of the portable speakers. But most importantly, future generations of Gryphons will be able to enjoy the gift of music being played seamlessly through the new built-in speakers system providing joy and laughter to all who enter the Dining Hall.” – Jenny Okon ’23

WHY I GIVE?

“Holy Child holds a special place in my heart. For many years I served as Assistant to the Former Head of School Anne Sullivan and while my professional journey may have taken me elsewhere, my connection to the School remains unwavering. Holy Child has a great reputation for teaching and nurturing its students. Everyone there — Faculty, Administration, and Staff — is focused on giving the girls a first-class educational experience in a loving environment. Some of the most transformational gifts an institution receives come in the form of legacy gifts such as a will provision or a retirement plan beneficiary designation.

BEQUESTS

Donors who wish to remain in control of their assets during their lifetime can designate Holy Child as a beneficiary in a will or trust.

RETIREMENT PLAN DESIGNATION

A retirement plan designation allows donors to continue to take withdrawals in their lifetime and donate part or all of their unused retirement assets to help further our mission.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

Charitable gift annuities allow donors to receive an immediate income tax deduction for the value of their gift, guaranteed income that is partially tax-free, and favorable treatment of capital gains if they donate appreciated securities.

A Look into our Inspirational Future

With unwavering determination and a clear vision for progress, Holy Child’s Capital Campaign is setting the stage for a transformative future. The work related to the planning and building of a new academic facility on campus began several years ago with the acquisition of the Holy Child Convent and surrounding property. That purchase, coupled with strong enrollment and successful fundraising initiatives, supported a monumental step toward the actualization of this project. The strategic decisions of both past and present stakeholders have laid the foundation for the future growth of our campus and commitment to our mission-based education.

After emerging from the COVID pandemic, we re-evaluated the purpose and scope of the building and have made tangible steps forward. Last summer, Holy Child engaged with Graham-Pelton to guide our fundraising efforts. To date, we have commitments of $5.4 million designated for this critical project. In the fall of 2022, the School partnered with the Perkins Eastman architectural firm. With their expertise, we have re-envisioned our plans and are in the formal design development phase for a building that will highlight and grow our outstanding programs in technology, engineering, the digital arts, faith identity, and ministry. While continuing to work carefully with the Town of Harrison, we aim to break ground by April 2024 and have the building opened for September 2025. This timeline reflects our measured urgency for completing the project. Undoubtedly, the new building will amplify Holy Child’s commitment to 21st-century teaching and learning. It will both reflect the quality of our academic and student-centered programming as well as support the spiritual growth of the community members in our care. While the focus on our mission and women in STEAM remain priorities in this project, we are re-considering the original STREAM Center name. It is clear that so much has evolved since the start of this project, so it is fitting that its name will evolve as well. Look for an announcement later this year!

Holy Child is clearly moving forward, in Cornelia Connelly’s words, to “meet the wants of the age.” The fruits of this work will be a source of inspiration for the entire community and for future generations to come.

To learn more or to support the Campaign, please contact Samantha Hanley, Director of Institutional Advancement, at s.hanley@holychildrye.org or at 914.967.5622, ext. 290.

support that courses through our community’s veins. Special thanks to the more than 500 community members who participated.

HEAD OF SCHOOL RECEPTION

On October 5, we were thrilled to celebrate our most generous donors and volunteers at the Head of School Reception. A symphony of gratitude and appreciation echoed through the air, painting the evening with the hues of heartfelt connection.

The evening featured remarks from Head of School Colleen Pettus, Board Chair Ellen Fahey-Smith, and Director of Institutional Advancement Samantha Hanley. However, the evening’s true gem was the emotional reflection that emanated from Noelle Gallego ’23. She shared her perspective, detailing a vivid portrait of the transformative journey she undertook during her time at Holy Child. It was a poignant and touching moment that etched itself into the hearts of all present.

And what is a celebration without music? The Madrigals, with their enchanting harmonies, gifted us a rendition of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” a melody that resonated deeply, expressing sentiments that words often struggle to convey.

We are incredibly grateful to the many donors who believe in our Mission and give their time, talents, and treasure to support Holy Child. Their commitment allows us to prepare our girls to become women of conscience and action and the next generation of bold, courageous, and compassionate leaders.

This year’s Head of School Reception is right around the corner, taking place on October 4. Please note that this event is by invitation only.

GIVING TUESDAY

On November 29, our community came together and generously donated more than $450,000 to Holy Child! This exceptional accomplishment is not just a number, it is a testament to the shared dedication and unwavering

A truly heartening aspect of this day was the participation of our students. The Class of 2023 demonstrated their commitment to giving back with a remarkable 100% participation in the senior class gift initiative. Their enthusiasm serves as a beacon, guiding us toward a future where philanthropy and action go hand in hand.

Amid the day’s festivities, giving challenges and delightful appearances by Connie, the Gryphon, added an element of excitement. These moments of camaraderie united us in purpose, reminding us that even in the digital realm, we stand together as a family. Every gift made on Giving Tuesday helped to create a vibrant community that cares for and develops the next generation of bold and compassionate leaders.

We are looking forward to another inspiring Giving Tuesday event on November 28. Join us, and let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday a resounding success, as we continue our journey of igniting inspiration and fostering the leaders of tomorrow.

MAUREEN ALISON MCGRATH ’78 MEMORIAL LIBRARY LUNCHEON & BOUTIQUE

On December 1, Holy Child held the Maureen Alison McGrath ’78 Memorial Library Luncheon & Boutique. To all those who attended, your presence was truly a gift, and to our cherished guest author, Nikki Erlick ’12, a New York Times bestselling author of The Measure, a heartfelt thank you for gracing us with your moving keynote address.

The event was held at the Apawamis Club, where attendees were greeted by an exquisite array of local vendors, inviting them to indulge in a fun shopping experience that supported both community businesses and our Mission. Many patrons supported the event by donating to the Giving Tree and by

purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win a Gucci Ruby Red Suede Bag. Congratulations once more to Lisa Manganello, P ’26, for winning that stunning bag!

Mark your calendars as the next chapter beckons. We invite you to join us on November 30 as we gather once again for the Maureen Alison McGrath ’78 Memorial Library Luncheon & Boutique, where author Annabel Monaghan will serve as keynote speaker. Together, we continue to pen the story of inspiration, camaraderie, and, most importantly, do some shopping!

The Holy Child Medal is awarded to members of the community for their tireless commitment and service to the Mission and ideals of the School. This year, we were proud to bestow this prestigious honor upon Steve and Cathy Clemens P ’19, ’22, and Toni Santangelo Archibald ’76 for their gifts of time, talent, and treasure to School of the Holy Child.

It truly was a night to remember! A night of shared laughter, heartfelt conversations, philanthropic support for Holy Child, and wonderful memories crafted against the backdrop of a remarkable success.

We invite you to mark your calendars for the forthcoming 35th Annual Benefit, set to unfold on April 19, 2024. Prepare to be swept away as we continue to raise the bar and ignite inspiration.

ANNUAL BENEFIT

On Friday, April 28, we held the sold-out 34th Annual Benefit at Westchester Country Club. The air was infused with anticipation, and little did we know that the “Make Some Waves” event would not only meet but far surpass our loftiest aspirations. With an awe-inspiring gross of more than $800,000, it was the most successful Benefit to date.

GRYPHON CLASSIC

The Gryphon Classic, held on June 19, was filled with camaraderie, excitement, and fun. The day included brunch, a barbecue, and 18 holes of golf at Leewood Golf Club, followed by a cocktail party with delicious food and drinks complimented by amazing raffle baskets and a mini-silent auction.

Leewood Golf Club’s rolling fairways and beautiful scenery were the perfect backdrop for this memorable day of golf as friends cheered each other on, creating an atmosphere brimming with joy and sportsmanship.

Mark your calendars for June 17, 2024, a date that promises an even grander Gryphon Classic. Not only will it include golf, but it will also introduce the thrill of tennis, adding a new dimension to an already cherished tradition.

ABCs OF ANNUAL GIVING

Through a robust annual giving program, the Office of Institutional Advancement connects with parents, parents of alumnae, grandparents, alumnae, students, and faculty to build and foster a culture of philanthropy. The relationships we nurture directly benefit students and advance the Mission of School of the Holy Child.

The annual giving program consists of three main categories: Annual Fund for Holy Child, Benefit (and key signature events), and Capital projects.

ANNUAL FUND FOR HOLY CHILD

The Annual Fund for Holy Child consists of unrestricted gifts and restricted gifts. Unrestricted gifts touch all aspects of the Holy Child student experience. These dollars are used immediately, allowing us the flexibility to do more for students each year. Restricted gifts provide donors the freedom to invest directly in the area of Holy Child that they feel most passionate about. Donors can be confident that Holy Child will steward their gift as intended.

BENEFIT AND KEY SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENTS

The Office of Institutional Advancement hosts events to engage with the community while philanthropically supporting Holy Child. These events provide fun and camaraderie for our community while also providing critical funds for the students. Our signature fundraising events include the Annual Benefit, the Maureen Alison McGrath ’78 Library Luncheon and Boutique, and the Gryphon Classic.

CAPITAL PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES

Above and beyond the need for unrestricted annual giving there is a need to plan and provide funding for the capital projects like new buildings and facilities and the School’s long-term financial health.
