HOLY CHILD SUMMER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM The Summer Enrichment Program is a great opportunity for students to connect, create, and collaborate through a variety of courses that range from academic prep courses to co-curricular courses in the arts, athletics, and service. Our Summer Enrichment Program begins June 21, 2021. The dates, times, and cost of each course follow the course descriptions below. All courses will be held on campus with a virtual component for select courses. Newly admitted students will use a 2-in-1 device provided by the school and will participate in Orientation Day, which will be held on June 18th from 9am-11am. In addition to our Summer Enrichment Program offerings, we are opening our Math Lab and Writing Center both virtually and in person to incoming and current students starting July 12, 2021- August 13, 2021 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-3pm by appointment through our school portal, Veracross. We are offering 1:1 and group sessions to support our students in completing summer reading, math assignments, and/or any course required summer work.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In the event of insufficient enrollment, the class will be canceled, and tuition fees will be refunded or credited. REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be made in the Summer Enrichment Program after May 1, 2021. MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL COURSES DANCE: BEGINNER INTENSIVE

Instructed by Justine Verheul, Dance Instructor Rising 6th-12th Graders June 28-July 2, 9am-10:30am

This one-week program provides training for students interested in dance at a beginner level. Students train in daily classes demonstrating various dance techniques such as jazz, hip-hop. and modern. Students then apply these skills in rehearsals, working toward a polished, final virtual performance video. Students with some or no dance training encouraged to join.  Tuition: $200.00 | Capacity: 14 WELL ROUNDED TIGER

Instructed by TBD Rising 6th – 12th Graders July 13-August 12, Tuesday/Thursday 10:30-11:45 Break out your fitness trackers and join us this summer for a personal training program focused on engaging your minds and bodies while pursuing health, balance, and wellness. Our summer fitness program will be blended providing live workouts emphasizing strength training, speed development, agility, recovery exercises, footwork, and injury reduction.

MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSES CERAMICS

Rising 6th -8th Graders July 19 – Friday 23, 12:00pm-3:00pm

Middle school students are welcome to join Ms. OBoyle for a week-long dive into ceramics. Students will work with natural, earthenware clay in order to make sculptures such as animal inspired figurines, teacups, plates, and bowls. This enriching art experience will help students understand the elements of art: form, space, and texture. Students will learn hand-building techniques and add glaze to their finished pieces. No prior experience is required. Tuition: $ 300.00 | Capacity: 14 LET’S GET LITERARY II

In this three-week course, students will read and reflect on the required summer reading novel while studying the basics of literary analysis, participate in Socratic discussions focused on the five elements of a story, and develop structure and style writing methods needed to develop their expressive voice. Because reading


and writing are best learned together, we will use the summer reading material as a basis for our literary reflections and writing for consistency and for a means to develop a deeper understanding of the material. Tuition: $550.00 | Capacity: 14 ALGEBRA EXPLORATIONS

This course is designed to develop abstract thinking skills in preparation for future courses in Algebra. Students will study the rules of algebra, matrices, signed numbers, equations, inequalities, graphing formulas, and much more. The course presents algebraic concepts and skills using a problem-solving approach. Tuition: $550.00 | Capacity: 14


UPPER SCHOOL COURSES 9TH GRADE ALGEBRA ENRICHMENT Instructor by Nawil Jama, US Math Teacher Rising 9th Graders July 12-30 , 12:00pm-2:00pm

This course will ensure successful preparation for Holy Child’s ninth grade math courses. Using a personalized approach, it will focus on a review of fundamental math concepts and skills to help each student strengthen core knowledge. Students will begin the Algebra 1 curriculum, focusing on linear equations, to provide an advanced start on the course work for the year. Looking for a fun and engaging way to complete the freshman summer reading? English Enrichment will provide a guided tour of your summer reading with all the benefits of teacher instruction and peer insights through class discussions and activities. Additionally, the course will provide strategies and lessons on

In partnership with Empowering the Ages, students


will engage in regular virtual conversations with senior citizens. Student participants will learn how to effectively engage in intergenerational conversations and plan weekly talking points for their group. Throughout these conversations, students will develop a deeper understanding of individuals from different generations while increasing their ability to communicate more effectively about themselves. This opportunity is for rising juniors and seniors.  Limited space is available. Student leaders will be leading a virtual camp for students at the Cornelia Connelly Center in New York City. Students will be responsible for creating math, reading, and character development lessons for 4th and 5th grade students. Student leaders will have the opportunity to learn about the socioeconomic and challenges the students they are mentoring face from speakers and virtual activities. This opportunity is for rising juniors and seniors. Limited space is available. DC CENTRAL KITCHEN

DC Central Kitchen is the nation’s first and leading community kitchen. DC Central Kitchen develops and operates social ventures targeting the cycle of hunger and poverty. Each of their ventures creates opportunities for meaningful careers, expands access to healthy food, and tests innovative solutions to systemic failures. At the Kitchen, students prepare food and work alongside people who have benefited from DC Central Kitchen’s programs. After the morning of service, you will have the opportunity to reflect on the morning and learn lessons about food insecurity. Students will receive service hours for participation in this program. Interfaith Works helps people in Montgomery County who are homeless or living in poverty. Student volunteers will


help retrieve, organize, and distribute donated clothing and household items. During this week of service, students will learn about the systems that lead to housing insecurity and how Interfaith Works seeks to fulfil the needs of the clients they serve in our area.  Please contact Ogechi Akalegbere at oakalegbere@holychild.org to apply. The College Essay Bootcamp is a great way to complete and refine your college essay, for either the Common App or the Coalition App, and to craft responses to frequently asked supplements. The class will be co-taught by Karin Wells, Associate Director of College Counseling, and Katie Moylan, Writing Center


Director. Students will be expected to complete their Naviance registration prior to attending the class, and it is strongly advised that students bring at least brainstorming or an initial draft of one Common or Coalition App essay to ensure they make the most of their experience. Please note that each session only has 15 spots available so they are available on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited to 15 per session. In Geometry, we will study traditional Euclidian and Coordinate Geometry, integrating the skills learned in Algebra 1. Topics include the language of geometry, logical reasoning through deductive and inductive proofs, area, volume, transformations in both two and three dimensions, congruency of triangles and other polygons, parallelism, similarity, circle theorems, constructions and trigonometry. Various technology resources as well as Internet resources are integrated


throughout the course to create dynamic lessons and to extend learning. The course is taught through student-centered principles of teaching and learning. Students will play an active role in the learning process and a variety of teaching and learning methods will be utilized to meet the learning needs of all students. Students are encouraged to ask questions and challenge themselves in a safe learning space. The classroom space will be used to enhance the collaborative, student centered, and flexible teaching model. This course is taught based on the theory of Growth Mindset where everyone can learn and improve their skills and knowledge in math, these are not fixed skills. Feedback will be given from assessments and students are encouraged to use that feedback for further growth. CALCULUS (full credit course)

In the Precalculus course we cover linear, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.  Skills include graphing functions, analyzing functions, solving equations, evaluating trigonometric expressions, and verifying identities. Although the summer course is six weeks long, we will address all of the same topics as the full-year course.  Additionally, this course will accommodate both grade-level and honors precalculus content.  Students designated for the honors-level will be required to perform additional tasks and/or sit for additional assessments.  *Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra II. Join Alice Mercer, 2017 Gold Medalist, two-time National Champion, and Holy Child Varsity Lacrosse Coach for a fun and fundamentally focused 3-day lacrosse clinic for rising 5-8 graders. This camp is open to players of all positions, beginners through advanced,


who are looking to improve their skills with highlevel instruction. The clinic will start with the basics (footwork, stickwork, positioning) and build to team concepts and small-sided games. Staff will include HC varsity lacrosse players, coaches, and collegiate players. We are looking forward to 3 days of lacrosse instruction and fun!  Participants are responsible for suppling their own equipment, including protective eyewear, stick, mouth guard, and water. bottle. Goalies will also need to bring their own equipment.  Tuition: $150.00/per session Capacity: 30 per session
