An innovative wellness studio that first launched in Venice almost a decade ago. A high-end clothing boutique whose Israeli-born designer first set up shop in New York City. An art gallery and collective that continues to emerge as an incubator of international and local talent alike.
To the untrained eye, such a diverse array of retail tenants may seem something like unusual or even…out of character. But to those who live, work, create, shop, and work out in the ever-evolving District, the eclectic collection of five vibrant new businesses here feels like something else.
Business as usual. And further evidence of the area’s growth into a must-see, be-here-now hotspot. Not just in Hollywood proper, but throughout Los Angeles and the nation’s collective cultural consciousness.
The Hollywood Media District isn’t a mere trend or blip on the radar. It’s a vibrant, proud, and diverse area with deep roots in the history and development of Southern California and the United States. And the growth, development, and infusion of new talent and vision here is setting the stage for the kind of comeback and star turn that can only happen in Hollywood.
The Hollywood Media District BID (Business Improvement District) has made significant strides in enhancing the district’s physical appeal and functionality. Recent BID enhancements include re-landscaping the seven medians on North Highland Avenue; replacement of 60 trash receptacles throughout the District; and the doubling of cleaning service capabilties with Sweeping Corp. of America. Notable property improvement initiatives for the third quarter include additional N Highland median landscaping, park bench restorations, utilitarian and flood lighting installations in areas of critical need, and pedestrian walkway renovations on N Highland Ave. providing a safe and inviting atmosphere for everyone.
Following is a closer look at Make Room art gallery and the four additional new boundary-expanding and conversation-sparking businesses in the District.
“The opening of this location marks a new chapter and milestone for Make Room,” says Yin about moving her five-year-old gallery into a larger space in the District.
“We are beyond excited to have the opportunity to deepen our support for our artists and strengthen our connection with our community, as we continue to push the boundaries and inspire dialogues.”
When Emilia Yin opened Make Room art gallery in 2018, she envisioned a space devoted to showcasing compelling art—while also attracting and promoting emerging artists, particularly women and people of color. Fast forward five years, and the ever-expanding Make Room has carved out a sterling reputation as a leading-edge incubator of diverse voices and creators. Make Room has showcased and unveiled some of today’s most exciting contemporary artists, including solo and group exhibitions by Kat Lyons, ASMA, Guimi You, Catalina Ouyang, Yuri Yuan, Xin Liu, and Jacopo Pagin.
Strong relationships with both local and international collectors and institutions have led to placements in pro minent collections—including the Hammer Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, and the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, China. Now the organic growth has also led to an exciting new 4,500-square-foot home in a growing gallery community that also includes Marian Goodman, Jeffrey Deitch, and others. Featuring multiple exhibition spaces, an outdoor courtyard and garden, and a compelling wooden bow truss roof, Make Room’s expansive new space will facilitate the gallery’s dynamic programs, including an on-site artist residency. Not limited to a physical gallery, Make Room works to generate new possibilities and support its artists’ visionary projects and innovative development. z

Since its foundation 20 years ago, the namesake clothing line of Israeli-born, New York-based fashion designer Nili Lotan has grown to become a favorite of Hollywood illuminati and starlets. So it’s only fitting that Lotan’s flagship West Coast store is located in the vibrant heart of the Hollywood Media District, at 927 N. Sycamore Avenue.
This is just the seventh of the exclusive Nili Lotan locations, with five of the other six stores spread across New York City. After graduating from Tel Aviv’s prestigious Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in 1980, Lotan moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion design. After a highly successful run as lead designer at top fashion houses like Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne, and Nautica, Lotan launched her own namesake label in 2003. Her signature wardrobe of luxurious, chic, and timeless pieces for today’s woman has since expanded to include jeans, belts, handbags, and even menswear—along with limited-edition, highly-coveted collaborations.
Lotan’s collections have been featured in top fashion and lifestyle publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and The Wall Street Journal. The striking and empowering designs have come to amass a dedicated celebrity following that encompasses film, music, and entertainment icons including Rihanna, Christy Turlington, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Kaia Gerber, Jennifer Aniston, and Cindy Crawford. z
