When Egor Efiok first approached us over four years ago to collaborate with her to give Nollywood international publicity, we had never even heard of Nollywood. Incidentally, she had just shot Turning Point and some of the Hollywood stars in the film are clients of Hollywood Weekly. This piqued my interest and we got to meet and feature some of the Nollywood stars that work with Egor - Desmond Elliott, Monalisa Chinda, Jackie Appiah, Oge Okoye, Joseph Benjamin, Ebbe Bassey and Igoni Archibong. Egor explained that her movie concept is Hollywood Meets Nollywood and Cross River State and that was why she did her casting thus. She said she wanted to cast a brand new face in all her films and she went to Calabar in Nigeria to audition for Turning Point and that was how she met her lead actor, Igoni Archibong, who went ahead to win 2 Best Actor In A Leading Role Awards.

I was very impressed with this purpose driven lady and decided to collaborate with her to use our platform to give all her projects international publicity. This was back in 2012 and our business relationship has waxed stronger since then, as she has supported us and graced our film festivals every year. I was pleasantly surprised when I got an excited call from Egor this past May informing me that her state Governor, His Excellency Senator Professor Ben Ayade had recently incorporated a film academy called Callywood and had appointed her to run it and she was going with her director from London Film School to Calabar in Nigeria. I have closely watched her progress since then and read the reports on Nigerian sites about the Callywood auditions she conducted in Calabar. Within a month of Egor Efiok being in Calabar, I signed an MOU with her to screen all Callywood films at our film festivals. We decided to honour His Excellency Senator Professor Ben Ayade with our special Image Award this year because his incorporation of Callywood Studios corresponds with what we do over here in Hollywood. We are afterall, film people, and film people love film people. We are impressed by other great works of Governor Ayade that we have been carefully intimated about which include Calabar Super Highway, Calabar Monorail, Calabar Carnival, Bakassi Deep Seaport, Cross River State Green Police, Calasvagas, Calabar Convention Centre and most overwhelmingly, the Calabar Garment Factory which we understand has the largest floor in the world. We were also informed that This Day Newspaper rated Governor Ayade as outstanding top 3 Governors in the whole country. The Nation Newspaper further rated him as the best performing amongst the governors in the whole country. This proves how well deserving he is of this special Image Award and we were truly honoured to present it to Egor Efiok, who received the award on his behalf. His Excellency Senator Professor Ben Ayade, also received a gift of a personalised bottle of Fela wine made by MisEnBouteille for the Felabration festival in 2013 which was sponsored by Jay Z and which his wife, Beyoncé, performed at. We felt that Governor Ayade would especially love this gift, as it is symbolic of his country, Nigeria, and of one of the greatest acts that Nigeria ever produced. Fela is held in very high esteem here in Hollywood. We decided to introduce a Motown concept to this year’s Hollywood Weekly Magazine Film Festival (HWMFF) which had legends from the 70’s like Charlie Wright, perform and a very entertaining group of Soul Train Dancers. The reviews have been very encouraging so far. HWMFF event was promoted by our numerous media partners here in Hollywood and most notably, Getty Images. We also had newsmen fly in from China to join our media partners here to cover the event live. We used the opportunity as well, to educate our audience about Cross River State, with special focus on Governor Ayade’s prominent feats achieved and his ministry of culture and tourism industry. We envison that our coverage would garner more general interest in Governor Ayade, who doubles as the Commisioner Of Culture and Tourism and the Governor of Cross River State, the only Governor in Nigeria that is nicknamed “the digital Governor” due to how modern he is and how he gets things done in record time. At the request of Egor Efiok too, we organised a complimentary tour of Warner Studios for Governor Ayade, with the hope of encouraging a collaboration with Callywood Studios. She represented him at the tour and we will continue to do our best to represent Callywood Studios positively here in Hollywood. As our final gift to His Excellency Senator Professor Ben Ayade, he will be the first Governor in Africa to feature on the cover of this year’s special film festival magazine edition. Hollywood Weekly look forward to coming to Nigeria to cover the filming of the first Callywood Studios film in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Enjoy,

GOVERNOR AYADE’S LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENTS

hen Professor Ben Ayade took the reins as Cross River State governor in 2015, he was well aware of the various challenges that lay in wait for him- challenges of unemployment, lack of industrialization, among others. For a governor who believes that if a man can put his soul above his problems and challenges, he can surmount all odds, he knew exactly the direction his administration needed to take. In order to tackle the problem of unemployment, he understood that the state needed to be placed on the path of an accelerated industrialization. It was in recognition of this that he spared no time to hit the ground running in attracting both foreign and local investors to the state with a view to establishing industries that will create employment opportunities for the people. Governor Ayade’s administrative philosophy is firmly anchored on the belief that the citizenry could only be liberated from the shackles of poverty if the state was completely decoupled from its dependence allocations from the federation account. However, in his quest to industrialize the state, the governor has insisted on maintaining a balancing act between infrastructure and human capital development and empowerment. As such, as he seeks to aggressively recalibrate the economy of the state for an Eldorado of prosperity and create an Elysium for the people, he is doing so, by placing emphasis on the peoples’ welfare than anything else. For Ayade, man is more important than infrastructure. It is this thinking that has fueled the special attention being enjoyed by the state’s workforce in the last one year under his watch as governor, in addition to other developmental strides captured hereunder. BAKASSI DEEP SEAPORT In fulfilment of his declaration at his inauguration to embark on a signature project, the 260km superhighway and a deep seaport, the following have been achieved for what is going to be the deepest seaport in Africa at 16 meters draft:

The superhighway, which will be fitted with speed cameras and wifi, will serve as the evacuation corridor for the Bakassi Deep Seaport. Work so far done on the project include: • Soil studies completed • Detailed survey completed • Route survey completed • EIA ongoing CROSS RIVER GARMENT FACTORY Construction of the Cross River Garment Factor has been completed. It is reputed to be the biggest single floor garment factory in the world with a floor size of 5,000sqm. 3000 Cross Riverians, mostly women, have been recruited to start work in three shifts. GREEN POLICE In a bid to protect the state’s rich and vast forest reserve as well as its clean and green environment, Governor Ayade established the Green Police, which has so employed over 1,500 young Cross Riverians. CALABAR PHARMACEUTICAL AND COSMETIC COMPANY (CALAPHARM) The Calabar Pharmaceutical Company known simply as CALAPHARM is currently under construction along the Goodluck Jonathan Bypass. On completion, the company is expected to create at least 2000 jobs. CALABAR RICE CITY Construction work is ongoing at the multi-million dollar Rice City project being undertaken in partnership with the Thai-Africa group. The project covers over 3000 hectares along the Goodluck Jonathan Bypass. When operational, the project is expected to produce a specie of highly vitaminized rice for local consumption and export.

• Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report at advanced stage

CALABAR INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE (CICC)

• Detailed design of the seaport done

The Ayade-led administration has completed the 5000 seat capacity purpose-built convention centre.

• Barthymetric survey completed • 260km Digital Superhighway

The convention centre is reputed to be the second of its kind in Africa with the other one in Cape Town, South Africa.

CALABAR MONORAIL The administration has also completed work on the Calabar monorail, making it the first functional monorail in subSaharan Africa. The monorail connects the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort with the Calabar International Convention Centre located at the Summit Hills. The monorail has ten coaches. HEALTH Equally occupying a pride of place in Governor Ayade’s administration is the quest for a healthy populace that will galvanize the necessary manpower to achieve his developmental agenda.

Accordingly, the governor has, in the last one year embarked on massive renovations and equipping of primary healthcare centres across the state. Some of the Primary Healthcare Centres are: Primary Healthcare Center Ikom, Primary Healthcare Centre Obudu, Primary Healthcare Centre, Bedia, Obanliku and Primary Healthcare Centre, Anigejie, Akamkpa. The administration has also established health posts at Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in Akpabuyo and Bakassi; created trans-border health posts for disease surveillance and immunization coverage and commissioned the General Hospital/College of Health, Obudu. It has also set up TBAs surveillance team; provided 600 delivery kits to three PHC facilities in the state; established

clinical governance and e-health in all secondary health facilities as well as provide free medical outreaches in Ugep and Ikom. And just recently, the Governor signed into law, the state health insurance scheme with the objective of achieving universal healthcare coverage for all the citizens of the state. WORKS Under the urban infrastructural renewal programme, the administration completed a number of road projects including Channel Two Anansa Road by the West African Peoples Institute (WAPI) and Edem Ekpenyong/Akim Timber Market Road, all in Calabar Municipality. Other achievements in this sector include: opening of new roads besides Botanical Garden and Okoro Agbor extension, rehabilitation of road networks in Calabar Metropolis (operation zero potholes), rehabilitation and construction of drainages in Calabar Metropolis, intervention works on Alege Road in Obudu Local Government Area, intervention works on Amana Road in Obanliku Local Government Area, intervention along Calabar-Odukpani-Itu Road, intervention at Atimbo Road and erosion control at the Obudu Ranch Resort. EDUCATION An academic himself, Governor Ayade recognizes the fact that education is the bedrock of society. In this regard, on assumption office, he swung into action by swiftly restoring the scholarship scheme as part of measures to ensure that indigent students in the state have access to education. In just one year in office, the administration has undertaken the construction of • Nine laboratories in six schools • Rehabilitated several schools across the state • Provided chairs and tables for teachers across the state.

• Renovation of SUBEB Conference room, offices and the environs. • Access to the 2013-14 Special Education grants from UBEC was made possible as well as the balance of the excess funds from UBE 2005-2007 intervention projects, with six additional schools captured in the accrued balance of the excess funds. • Sustenance of Ayade’s scholarship scheme • Audit of teachers was conducted • Procurement of 18,000 dairies, 18,000 registers for schools • Purchase and distribution of 18 desktop computers, printers, UPS and generators to 18 Local Government Education Authorities. • Comprehensive ICT training for teachers • Injection of two million British pounds of Waterlo Foundation grant into schools • MoU with the Canadian Bureau for International Education for the establishment of three model schools of Canadian standard in the state. • Collaboration with Samsung International for the establishment of 36 computer-backed training centres, with formal launch in June. • Collaboration with Samsung to establish a Technology Academy in Calabar. • Improvement on education performance index from 27 to 20. POWER SECTOR In the Power sector, Governor Ayade has recorded quiet but laudable successes. A. Secured $30 million Indian loan for 26 megawatts of electricity for Cross River B. Taken delivery of equipment for 20 megawatts power plant to ensure 24-hour power supply in Calabar.

• Provided 7454 plastic chairs and tables for Early Child Care • Development (ECCDE), for primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

• Teachers Professional Development Programme workshop to improve efficiency.

dysfunctional for over a year, by further upgrading ICT department into a full-fledged Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), the first to be so created in the country. In less than a year, the ministry has achieved the followings: • Design and completion of the first Calabar Smart City Network. • Digital job search training for 2,000 youths.

It first started as a unit in the Governor’s Office between 1999 and 2003 and later upgraded in 2007 to a department.

• Formation of first association of women in technology (techy-women)

Cognizance of the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as an enabler of revenue generation for Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), the administration of Governor Ayade realized the urgent need to revitalize the state’s Data Center which had remained

• Establishment of cisco academy. • Reactivation of the state Data Centre. • Ongoing extension of fibre optic cables to all the 18 local government areas of the state.

SOLID MINERALS

ENVIRONMENT

As part of a deliberate policy of the administration aimed at diversifying the state’s linear revenue stream, Governor Ayade’s administration established the necessary legislative framework with the creation of the Ministry of Solid Minerals. The objective of the government was to create opportunities for the state to fully tap into the mining activities of some of its abundant solid mineral deposits spread across its vast land. So far, quarry sites have been mapped out in Mgbenege in Obudu, Okubishi in Boki and Ojor in Akamkpa.

In order to protect and sustain the environment, as well as retaining the status of Calabar as the cleanest city in Nigeria, the administration, on assumption of office, embarked on the following policies and programmes:

The government intends to consummate this initiative with the establishment of a cement factory in Akamkpa before the end of 2016. The Solid Mineral Ministry has also applied for quarry license which will be secured before the end of the year. HOUSING In the administration’s quest to create a just and equitable society, and to provide for the very poor and indigent, preliminary discussions with Irish property investors Affordable Modular Homes Limited culminated in the signing of a four Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of 5000 housing units. The administration has also contracted Larfage to build modular housing units for the displaced people of Bakassi.

• Recovery and protection of the green areas. • Desilting of areas prone to flooding. • Re-grassing of degraded areas within the state city centre. • Clearing of wages of all other urban centres. • Procurement of waste trucks and compactors • Audit of all erosion sites in the state. AGRICULTURE • Commencement of an ultra-modern Rice Mill. • Partnership agreement for the establishment of a 400,000 hectare of sugarcane production and processing factory. • A five billion naira ultra-modern rice development project in collaboration with Thai-Africa group, involving commercial seedling production (in Calabar) and field production/processing at Bansara. • Agreements signed with Sanya Rice Company of China and Paul-B Nigeria Ltd. to commence production of irrigated rice. • Commercial production of banana for export under PPP

In this regard and in keeping to its promise, civil servants have been receiving their salaries not later than 20th of every month since June last year. Today, the ghost of delayed salaries has been exorcised. The complaint is no longer one of delayed salary but that it is coming too early in the month. Also to reenergize the already aging civil service, the administration, in its wisdom, lifted the 23-year-old freeze on employment. Accordingly, the civil commission was directed to advertise for recruitment into the service. arrangement in collaboration with San Carlos Company of Mexico. This project is valued at $27 million dollars. • The Ayade administration secured additional financing for the continuation of FADAMA 3 project. His Excellency paid the State’s counterpart contribution in full. • Completion of documentation and approval of loan facility to small-scale farmers. CALAS VEGAS In the administration’s new city development strategy, government intends to establish three new cities in the three senatorial zones of the state with Calas Vegas in the Southern Senatorial Zone; Centicort City in the Central Senatorial District and Northstradam in the Northern Senatorial District. Already, the design for Calas Vegas, which is the most ambitious real estate project in Africa, has been done. The new city will be located on the Twins Island, overlooking the Calabar River from opposite the Marina Resort.

A car ownership scheme has also been instituted for senior civil servants and public office holders in the state. INCLUSIVE GOVERNMENT A strong advocate of Keynesian theory, Governor Ayade deliberately expanded his government with a view to giving opportunities to more people to be part of the day-to-day running of administration in the state. Like John Maynard Keynes, Ayade believes that when an economic shrinks, it is the duty of government to spend in order to reflate the economy. And so, by engaging more people, the economy can come out of recession when they are encouraged to spend. GOVERNANCE Also, to ensure an orderly society for good governance, a few months after assumption of office, the administration signed the following bills into law. • Anti-Kidnapping Bill, • Social Housing Bill,

Desirous of ensuring that the wages of honest labour liberates families from the jaws of hunger and hardship, the Ayade ledadministration made a solemn commitment to lift the morale of workers in the state by ensuring that workers’ salaries were not only to paid but paid promptly.

PLOT:

The actions of a King, wary of his crown and seeking for a male child to heir his throne, consequently leads to two newborn babies being switched...a princess and a farmer’s son. Following the mysterious disappearance of the farmer, the wife is accused of being a witch and to escape any consequences, she runs away with her baby girl. TALKING ANIMALS – A parrot that witnessed the baby switch spreads the word in the jungle and all the animals plan to help the girl and her mother, who live alone in the jungle and are often sad about their loneliness. Along the line, the Prince (farmer’s son) meets the girl (princess) and they fall in love. “The film is an African take on the princess stories we all love. The main character is Sade who grows up in the Jungle after her Queen mother switched her at birth with a poor farmers new baby son. The film was entirely privately funded with support of the cast and crew who took a pay cut just to make the first children feature animation. It was produced over three years starting from 2013 and was made using 3D software blender, Maya and unity. Voice over recording was done in London and Nigeria. Production was in London. Many people that worked on it did it based on the novelty of the idea”. Egor Efiok ended her speech by appealing for funding to encourage the Nigerian film industry. I hear the cries of the children; the drip-drops of the tears streaming down their skeletal cheeks. I see them walking with their heads swinging down low, as they enter into their boxes of hopeless thoughts and defeat. Little babies encamped in communities where violence has maximized its peak; where moms are overburdened with work, and most dads are invisible or ablaze from intoxication of dope attained last week. I see underprivileged children deprived of quality education and adequate opportunities for which to escape poverty and the negative stereotypes dangling over their heads. I see young boys and girls fueled by pain, rage, and terror, work the streets for the love and freedom for which they seek. Children of all races, of all ages, mingle to form gangs to fill the void and emptiness they feel. I hear the cries of the children. The eyes of the future are looking to see what difference will we make in our time.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Nattacha, a brave and beautiful soul among the bunch who was crown recently this year as Miss Global France 2016. Nattacha began writing music and poetry from out of the passion, reality, struggles, fear, and hardships that she has witness around the world and even in her own community. In many of her writings, songs, and projects, Nattacha expresses her deep seated concern for the children, the youth, and humanity. She also addresses the sense of hopelessness that is progressively becoming the norm in society, humanity losing themselves to drugs, violence, hate, and crime, families failing, and breaking apart, and people giving up on life because of the difficulties they have or are currently dealing with. Aside from music, and poetry, Nattacha is currently rewriting and finishing her first novel and screenplay entitled: Worthy. The story stems from real life events and experiences among herself and individuals to raise awareness to the everyday struggle black young women in America face. She plans to re-release her book to begin touring and spreading her message of truth to the world January 2017. Furthermore, later that year she is planning to work with a film producer to begin filming the movie as well. To place the icing on the cake, in lure of recent and reoccurring events that has been (add) crippling America, Nattacha has started a movement called: The Movement Forward-Together We Will. The Movement Forward- “Together We Will” is a worldwide initiative to pledge YES to LOVE and NO to hate. Furthermore, to do something just a little more that has never been done before. They plan to go community to community to create the change that America needs by assembling the people together within one community to unite and build a center to better their world. On May 1st 2015 Joy released her single â&#x20AC;&#x153;Are You Gonna Love Me?â&#x20AC;? which got her 2 nominations in the Africa Music Awards in Nigeria in 2015,(AFRIMA) for Most promising Artist and for Best R&B And Soul Artist. Currently Joy is working on her debut album with Producers Robert Eibach and David Longoria.
